Pro coloured spells... spells! that means deathtouch creatures can still kill it. but the again, either you have a pinger with deathtouch and you should have won, or this thing will attack and you lose at least 6 (7)perms.

this card hates the wizard that returns spells from the stack^^

Very difficult to remove unless there's a creature ability that does it (Royal Assassin, for example). Spells are mostly useless against him, but Oblivion Ring and Journey to Nowhere still work, thankfully. Very much a game-ender once you cast him (not so much if you cheat him onto the battlefield, but still a very scary threat even then)

Edit: Silly censors...

lol has anyone else noticed the wording for its take another turn ability
"When you CAST! Emrakul, take an extra turn after this one."
he doesn't even need to resolve for you to have an extra turn.

so if he is countered...such as by exiling target spell or simply time stopping your turn. but personally i'd just steal him with a Gather Specimens. you'd still get your extra turn.

Though i'm not gonna enjoy arguing with some of the more rules challenged players i know that just because it says "Protection from Coloured Spells" means i can't block it with a deadly recluse and destroy it

Proteus Staff + Khalni Garden (or any manland). Turn 4.

He'd have to be the only creature in your deck, so just fill the rest of it with control.

This card will be used if only for its high CMC and power/toughness
Think cards such as Living Destiny and Explosive Revelation
It supplants Darksteel colossus as the big man on campus

Just for those who can't quite figure it out: Protection from colored spells =/= Protection from all colors. Creatures are not spells when they're in play, they're permanents. Activated, triggered, and static abilities are not spells. Artifacts in play are not spells. However, I don't think he can be targeted by "comes into play" triggered abilities of creatures because you choose the target when the creature is still a spell. I could be wrong on that one though.

When "ridiculous" just won't cut it, what are you supposed to say about a card like this?

Oh, wait. I've got it. "Never going to happen."

Seriously, if you can hardcast this thing, you deserve like a birrion medals. :V

MAYBE in Limited. MAYBE in Casual. NEVER in Constructed...EVER.

Cheating it into play, sure...I guess.

Even if you don't plan on using it, at least add it in as a sideboard utility. It blows mill decks out of the water.

If you think that hard casting it is too difficult, then you don't know how to use the set. Spawns and Eldrazi lands make up most of the mana cost. that is what's supposed to happen.

Oh my God, this is just ridiculous... I mean, a plain 15/15 should cost around 13 or more, right? Add a Time Warp (5 CMC), flying (around 1 more), protection from colored spells (another 2 or so?), and Annihilator 6 (Another 4 or so, in my opinion) and you get 25 CMC. This is 10 less mana than that.

No no no no no no. This is bad card design wizards. BAD. You do not print something like this that essentially hoses your opponent and gives them little to no hope of recovering. You make expensive cards to be strong but have some kind of drawback that makes it riskier to play them. The flavor is also quite off on a card like this. Why would some plane devouring monster bow to the wishes of some little fleshy being squeaking out orders from the surface it is currently destroying. The destruction it causes from tearing around shouldn't be one sided. It should harm everyone involved.

@Lampshade: Emrakul needs to be cast in order to get the extra turn. So, in short, no. Still, being able to get him in fifth turn with nothing but land drops and no accel is nothing to scoff at. Sixth turn and they aren't likely to have too much extras that they can sack, so you've pretty much wrecked their day.

★★★★☆ (4.2/5.0) (6 votes)
@Johnald: You're right on all counts, except that you're forgetting that Wizards R&D spends too much time worrying about Limited and not enough about other formats. In their minds, Emrakul is the RoE equivilant of an Overrun in M10, only more important to the plot and to their profits, so it's a mythic instead of uncommon. In both cases, the moment the card drops, the game ends, almost always.

@SleetFox: I don't think it's possible for an immortal creature the size of a mountain, with a physical form that was forced on it by a trio of planeswalkers aeons after its creation/formation/whatever-happened, to ever have developed reproductive organs, so I'd say that Emrakul doesn't have a gender.

Does anybody remember when Darksteel Colossus and Phyrexian Dreadnought were considered to be some of the most powerful creatures ever printed (not efficient necessarily, just really big and powerful).

These make them look like nothing.
Kozilek and Ulamog are most likely more powerful than Colossus, and they cost roughly the same.
And there is no contest for Emrakul.

The worst thing is, as things stand in Standard, you'll be seeing Kozilek and Ulamog turn 5-6, and Emrakul only 2-3 turns later (if you survive that long).

You'll be seeing them turn 3 or sooner in Extended with Hypergenesis Cascade.

just say journey to nowhere or oblivion ring. and it won't kill mill off too easy with instant-speed graveyard removal. especially ravenous trap. any kind of mill in standard other than maybe memory erosion or a badly-timed halimar excavator will activate the trap, so the second they try to shuffle the GY, now it's gone, for the low low price of 0 mana. wewt.

That's one heck of a mana cost, but you get what you pay for. This may well supplant Darksteel Colossus as the go-to fetch card when putting things from your library into play (with Tooth and Nail, for example). Even minus the extra turn, this guy is beefier, has evasion, and, unless they can come out with seven fliers a turn, impervious to chump blocking. Just attacking will do some real damage, whether he gets through or not. Fun fun fun.
This is a true Rolls-Royce type creature, but it makes me a little sad that green no longer has the largest creature. Krosan Colossus just felt...right.

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Not a fan of this creature, seen it hard cast on turn 5. Sure you need all out mana accel or have to "cheat" it into play, but once it's cast it tends to end games quickly as it's really good as protecting itself and has game ending attributes (though for 15 mana I suppose it's appropriate, just seems like it isn't as hard to play in standard as it should be).

But yeah, that said it is not invincible. Discard, deathtouch, meddling mage, killing off the mana accelleration or elvish pipers used to power it out, etc.

These legendary Eldrazi are wreaking my favourite deck style (which is mill/control). I like them though. An uncounterable Time Warp with a major wreaking ball body and multiple murderous abilities is always awesome. I have found that a well timed Telemin Performance can turn the tides of the game and maybe a Mindbreak Trap can be profitable. Also I have used Gather Specimens to get my opponents big guys. Sadistic Sacrement could work, especially if its kicked.

This card makes me think of Nemesis of Reason as a fair card. This takes an entire deck-type and rips it a new one; Side-Decks everywhere will have this card as a mill-counter. The only way to ensure this card is destroyed is to exile it with an artifact or creature ability, OR (What I want to do, one day), use Jace the Mindsculptor, and make sure that this Feces-Spawning Machine is in my opponent's library.

Huh, interesting.
A savor the flavor article established that the correspoding kor and merfolk gods of the sky, Emeria and Kamsa, whom are both the distorted memory of Emrakul are both 'ostensibly female'.
Trying to characterize the Eldrazi by such 'quaint' humanoid characteristics like gender seems genuinely tragic to me.

I agree this card is sick, but I'm playing G/R Eldrazi and have yet to get the necessary Mana (lands and tokens) to drop this bad boy before my "win Condition" is met (i.e. let you get something big take it with my Red spells and pummel you with it and my big Green/Eldrazi creatures). I really think they should have reprinted Ghostfire, but they did not. You can kill this guy easily with a B/R combo, using Conquering Manticore and Bloodthrone Vampire or the M10 Vampire Aristocrat. Take it, swing with it, and sac it before the end of your turn.

That being aside of the one card solution Oblivion Ring and Journey to Nowhere, and you can still use Mindbreak Trap to exile it; this won't help if your playing a RoE draft or constructed play, you will need to use the B/R combo.

You could also use Mycosynth Lattice in a combo to target it with spells.

For the people complaining about the flavour of a planeswalker being able to control one of the big 3 Eldrazi, instead of thinking about it like your telling them what to do, think of it like your more or less giving them a treat and asking them if they wouldn't mind eating the other guy first.

You basically win. Can't be countered, milled, pathed, or even locked down before it nabbs it's controller an extra turn. I think the only thing that can really deal with this is a creature with death touch, and even then, it doesn't die. It just chills for a while before being summoned again. The only thing I can think to do with it is make sure you win by the time they can summon it. I mean, the first deck I would face an Eldrazi deck with would be my Burn//Haste deck. Just kill em before they can summon that thing. If that thing is cast, it's pretty much game over. If he doesn't destroy you, he'll destroy your field. Annihilator aint no joke.

Journey to Nowhere and Oblivion Ring get rid of it, for reasons Lollercoaster describes.
I tell you a funny way to deal with it, though.
Block with Tidehollow Strix

Big bad Emrakul dies to a 2/1..... lol!

@ugbootz: How does Stone Idol Trap help? Emrakul has flying

@Ah_MaclimesZero: "Spell" is the keyword you're looking for. Once a permanent is on the battlefield, it's not longer a spell, hence, he has no protection from Tidehollow Strix or any other creature. Same goes for O'ring and Journey to Nowhere, at the time their abilities resolve they're permanents, not spells, which is why they are some of the most effective ways of getting rid of Emrakul.
Before you start having a go at me go learn what a "spell" is.

@Revelation666: For crying out loud, LEARN WHAT A SPELL IS.
O'ring and Journey's abilities activate as they enter the battlefield, when they're PERMANENTS, not spells. A card is only a spell whilst it is on the stack. Once a permanent resolves, it isn't a spell anymore.
If you still don't believe me? Have a look at the article on the Magic Website called Defender Control. This is a quote rom it:
" Oblivion Ring targets when it enters the battlefield, so it can remove Emrakul, the Aeons Torn after they plop it down"
Learn what a spell is, then you can tell people what they can and can't do.

People seem to be acting like the sky is freaking falling with this card, or indeed any of the other Eldrazi.

If you're hard casting this thing, you've pretty much won. But the thing about that is, if your opponent lets you get 15 mana in the first place, I'd be amazed if you didn't win through some means.

Cheating it into play works, but if your opponent lets, say, an elvish piper resolve, and lets it last long enough for it to lose summoning sickness, they deserve to lose.

One valid complaint about this card in particular is that it completely destroys mill decks by simply being in the library.

This card isn't the end of MtG, it isn't the worst thing that Wizards has ever done, a lot of you people need to unbunch your panties and realize that this is just another giant fatty that will never be hard-casted outside of casual play and RoE limited/constructed.

As for the card itself, I like it, my inner Timmy loves huge beasts like this, for 15 mana, you're pretty much guaranteed to kill your opponent no matter what, so why not go for overkill?

In Reply to Asinine-Ultimatum, Your opponent couldn't have moved their prison term onto your Emrakul, Emrakul has protection from colored spells, meaning: "702.14c A permanent or player with protection can't be enchanted by Auras that have the stated quality. Such Auras attached to the permanent or player with protection will be put into their owners' graveyards as a state-based action." They would have lost their Prison Term, and you could have won!!

Rather balanced dude imho. It got powerful abilities, but on the other hand
- "on cast" triggers are worse than "on entering the battlefield"
- can't be reanimated
- can't be cheated into play (if you want the extra turn)
- costs insane amounts of mana

For the same amount of mana, you could fireball someone for 14 damage. :)

And why do people say it will stop mill decks dead in their track? I mill your deck, you have only emrakul left, I play sign in blood on you and you lose, Emrakul won't change that.

I cast this using Maelstrom Archangel, it was fun :) and yes, I got the extra turn because it's text says I may "play" a card from my hand without paying it's mana cost, play=cast.

I just got a few Fist of Suns for my 5 color deck, now I will be unleashing all sorts of beasts for 5 mana (and yes the mana base gets 5 colors pretty quick in case you're wondering)

This won't stop a mill deck, if that player uses Tormod's Crypt, Relic of Progenitus, or hell, even Walking Atlas a Bojuka Bog onto the battlefield in response to Emrakul's 'put into graveyard' triggered ability. I also love Extirpate, the split second guarantees that Emrakul will not be making an appearance. Any instant speed graveyard removal will stop the Eldrazi, though the triggered ability still resolves and they shuffle their graveyard into their library, but at least it won't happen indefinitely.
And before anyone argues this, the Eldrazi will be in the graveyard when the ability triggers. The above cards remove the graveyard (or just the one card) before the player shuffles, but after the creature is in the graveyard.

@majinara-

Wait, how are "on cast" triggers worse than "on enters the battlefield"? I find strictly the opposite to be true. Entering the battlefield only happens if the spell is allowed to resolve. On the other hand, there's nothing anyone can do to stop you from triggering Emrakul's second ability.
Kurhan

@MrQuizzles

True that it cannot be countered by being "on cast" vs "on entering battlefield", but there are SO MANY ways to cause things to repeatedly enter the battlefield. With the "on cast" effect you get it one time and if you wish to get it again you must recast it.

If it were on entering battlefield, cards such as turn to mist would act like a time walk. Mistmeadow Witch's ability could keep you going indefinitely.

I prefer more options. You can prefer more a$surance.
Both ways are undeniably good, but neither is strictly better than another.

@micashbrain you are incorrect. If prison term is on one of their creatures and you use a simic guildmage or some other ability to transfer the term (or pacifism or whatever) onto Emrakul then there is no problem with that. Even if it's being cast because it comes into play after it is on the stack then targets Emrakul as a permanant. Copying and pasting the comprehensive rules doesn't mean that you are correct. Now that applies to if Emrakul had let's say Protection from White, or Protection from Auras or something along those lines.

Other possible options for halting emrakul and it's ridiculousness.

"Pinger" (as in, a creature that taps to deal X damage) with death touch. An example of this would be Prodigal Pyromancer with a Basilisk Collar attached.

Aura Finesse + Pacifism or Crystallize. Pacify one of your own creatures and then Aura Finesse the enchantment on over to Emrakul.

If you're not bent on playing Standard format, you could also try using Prison Term

Should have been 17cmc just so it could be the most expensive card in magic. This still costs the same as Autochthon Wurm and one less than Draco. although at least those can have their costs reduced.

Question: If I were to cast multiple copies of Emrakul, in one turn, say by using Spawsire of Ulamog's 20 mana ability to drop my entire sideboard (and any cards exiled by Journey to Nowhere, Oblivion Ring, etc.) It That Betrays so that all nontoken permanents that an opponent sacrifices is put onto the battlefield under my control, All is Dust to get rid of those pesky colored permanents on both sides of the table but putting their permanents into play on my side, Ulamog to destroy any permanent that survived All is Dust (most likely some other Eldrazi), Artizans of Kozilek to bring back your creatures from the graveyard, Pathrazers of Ulamog or Eldrazi con***ion to round out the rest of the sideboard, and four copies of Emrakul to take multiple turns for what had better be the win.

I certainly know I get to cast each of those cards in the order I choose to allow maximum carnage. But would multiple Emrakuls really equal multiple timewalks? Good news is even though they would each kill each other off due to the Legendary rule, they would each get shuffled back into my library, along with any other cards in my graveyard at the time.

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
After freaking out for a little while about how unfair this card looks, I began to realize three things.

1) Hardly anyone will ever be able to hard cast this, so time walking doesn't matter.

2) Even with protection, several things will stop this card from a simple oblivion ring or journey to nowhere, to drana or kalitas bloodchief ability. It can still die to wrath's/day of judgement, and sac. affects like consuming vapors, so maybe not as hard to get rid of as it seems.

3) I can win the game before this ever sees play, in extended there's already several turn 3 wins (hyper gen really didn't need this card since it worked already), and in standard aggro creatures kill an opponent before they have 15 mana.

All in all, I am more impressed by ulamog, with his basic indestructibility, and enter play vindication/maelstrom pulse. Plus he is more cost efficient.

However, on the death touch note.. this creature has to be blocked and still takes 6 permanents, for a total of 7. If I tricked this out into play.. I'm going to attack you whether you have a deadly recluse or not, you can take my 1 emrakul and I'll take 7 of your permanents.

There are a lot of other creatures that can stop this one. Also, pull one of these out in a multiplayer game and probably everyone will focus their attention on you. I wouldn't use it as a creature, I would use it for the Beacon of Tomorrow/Reminisce ability it has. I think its more useful when cycled through a deck to create some sort of time loop

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it but the funniest way to get rid of Emrakul is intrepid hero a tap is just enough, you don't even have to wait Emrakul's attack (like deathtouch) or... even... spend mana!!! just love to do that in casual...

When first seeing this, I thought it was an absolutely devastating card. However, now that I look more into it, its not as broken as I thought it was. I think it can do well in standard. In vintage and legacy (what I play) and even extended, this card can definitely come out even faster. However do to the sheer amount of cards available in vintage and legacy, most players would probably lose before this card can even get out. Even with my deck, I can defeat players by turn 4.

The only answer I could think of for a mill deck would be to get a lucky Telemin Performance off and take the super huge eldrazi for yourself. The other thing that may help said mill deck is to use Bojuka Bog and exile that graveyard before Emrakul can recycle it. Another answer I have not seen mentioned is simply Clone him, but by that time he probably swung on you and took out a lot of your permanents.

Annihilator 6... seriously? Not that annihilator isn't the most unfair and overpowered game mechanic in this block... but annihilator is the most unfair and overpowered game mechanic in this block.

The thing that really gets me is that you can just put this guy out with an Elvish Piper or Dramatic Entrance and the only ill effect to you is that you don't get an extra turn. A turn-five 15/15 flyer that can't be countered, and has annihilator 6 is just a little bit stupid.

From what I understand this is replacing Progenitus as the win condition for Polymorph decks. My friend built one recently, with this as the only creature, token producers for the morph fodder, and a bunch of counters to protect the combo. Of course the problem with such a deck is that even my sloppily constructed red/green Allies deck rolls right over it if he doesn't manage to pull his combo off by the fifth turn. Conversely, on the occasions he does manage to get it out and attack with it, it's pretty much game over.

I've been thinking of other ways to deal with this guy other than the obvious one of killing the opponent before he gets it in play. In standard, there are several options, such as Day of Judgment or Planar Cleansing, which, ironically, his weaker brother Ulamog would be immune to. Sarkhan the Mad can turn him into a harmless 5/5 dragon, but Sarkhan Vol can give the opponent a taste of his own Emrakul before he's even had a chance to attack with it. As mentioned before, Oblivion Ring and Journey to Nowhere also work, as they're no longer spells by the time you choose the target.

About "Prison Term". If Prison Term is already on the battlefield it is not a spell, it is an enchantment. This has protection from colored spells, but permanents are no longer spells once they hit the board. Prison Term would be a completely valid option. You can't Path to Exile it, but you could Seal of Removal it since activated abilities are not spells.

That's right, there is a card from the Kamigawa block that defeats this card. Meet Keiga, the Tide Star, a 5/5, 6 drop blue dragon that has the nasty side effect of gaining control of target creature when buried.

Hmm... Emrakul doesn't have protection from blue abilites.

Eldrazi and their Drones? Tsabo's Decree.

Eldrazi Legends?
Tsabo Tavoc can block Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre all day long without taking a single point of damage; she can straight kill Kozilek here (although, Phthisis is much more fun); and not even Emrakul, the Aeons Torn can get past her as long as you have the 2 mana Phyrexian Splicer in play to strip away his flying (and its an artifact so his protection is worthless).

Annihilator mechanic got you down? Start up the Phyrexian Processor. Didn't get to it in time? Yawgmoth's Agenda means those lost permanents are never too far away.

Phyrexia laughs at your "aether born" abominations.

On a more serious note conerning the "over powered" nature of the Eldrazi. That's a true statement when you consider them in isolation. Annihilator may be an awesomely powerful mechanic, but you can stop it cold just by paying 1 G for a Tajuru Preserver. Path to Exile costs exactly W and can get rid of two of the titans relatively painlessly (which is why Emrakul has protection from colored spells). But with Tajuru Preserver on the field you could chump block Emrakul with the (almighty) Storm Crow.

Will the Eldrazi ever end up in a core set? Probably not; for exactly the reasons they seem so completely overpowering. But the fact of the matter is, they are supposed to be. Personally, I believe the claims that they take away from the strategy of M:TG are completely wrong. They add to it. But the strategy isn't in how to use them; a massive beat stick that eats your opponents board is pretty self explainitory. The challenge for us as players, as it is for the planeswalkers in the stories, is how to beat them.

(and a special note for Emrakul, who is by far the biggest and baddest; the problem with a power toughness of 15 is that it's only 5 away from 20. With all the manna ramp in RotE, by the time you play this I'm going to completely ignore it, sac all of my creatures to his Annihilator ability; and then burn you directly in the face with Heat Ray. 1st rule of fighting summons: if the creature is unstoppable, kill the player.)

Time Stop, Oblivion Ring (which I don't recommend since it's only a temporary solution), or...

Or there are ways to kill it before your opponent can get it out.

Meddling Mage - When Meddling Mage enters the battlefield, name a nonland card. That card can't be played. Choose Emrakul. It doesn't have protection BEFORE it's played.

Jace, The Mind Sculptor's ability ---- exiles all the cards in the library. And even if Emrakul was in the person's hand, they'd shuffle their hand into the library, which means they'd lose in seven or less turns.

Or find a way to get Emrakul into the graveyard. The owner would then shuffle the graveyard into the library. And then swing with Jace's ability to exile all the cards in the library.

Or even any creature with reach/flying and deathtouch. Emrakul doesn't have protection from coloured ABILITIES, so you can easily kill it. I own three Thornweald Archers, so this 15/15 can fall at the hands of a 2/1.

That last comment wouldn't work out. Emrakul's ability to return to the library would automatically happen first, since for Ravenous Trap to activate, it would have to already be in the graveyard. Besides, why not instead of thinking of a way to deal with Emrakul while he is cast, instead think of a way to prevent his casting at all.

wizards its just making broken cards so if u wanna continue playing u HAVE TO buy new expansions, after invasion block, the game went straight down with a lil comeback in timespiral, this kind of card is a big fu you to the players who play extended, due standart mean change your deck all the time, and vintage means playing against decks that can win the game in turn 1 or even 0 wich i dont see interesting in a game. And now they put name to every freaking ability and make 1000 cards with it due their lack of creativity.... just go to the beloved dominaria card and art style and start doing things right again

Emerakul's ability is a triggered affect that goes onto a stack. Since the ability triggers, then targets the graveyard of Emarkul's owner, you can still stack on it. Remove the graveyard before the triggered affect resolves, and poof.

Remember, Emrakul isn't like Darksteel or Progenitus. It HAS to go to the graveyard before it's affect activates. Hence the triggered, not passive ability.

I agree. The fact that it's colorless makes it a whole lot easier to play. Besides there are already tons of ways to put creatures into play without paying for them (although that won't trigger the extra turn ability). The real annoyance for me is Anihilator. Combined with the extra turn it basically turns this card into a "you win the game" condition. They should've either reduced the number, or made anihilator hurt you too which, as you said, would work much better, flavour-wise.

Oh, and Fist of Suns might be interesting with this. Or Maelstrom Archangel.

Yes, on the Icy Manipulator strategy. It is not a colored spell, so its ability would work on Emrakul. However you would have to play its ability before the attack is declared, otherwise Emrakul is already tapped, and Icy Manipulator's ability does nothing, letting the annihilator ability take effect.

@ benegade
The Haze Frog strategy has the downside of not protecting you from sacrificing six permanents on the field. Unless you're running tokens on the field, there's a good chance you'll be crippled even if you prevent the damage.

Ugh, It's like magic R&D was thinking, "Hey, how can we destroy EDH as a format?"

Eldrazi was their answer. Now half of the rands I play EDH with either use Braids, Conjurer Adept or Jhoira of the Ghitu to get this POS on the board as fast as they can, so much for a fun, casual format. When someone we reluctantly play with does this, my group of friends turn to each other and say, "We concede," then continue to play without the aforementioned person. :D

"On another note you can counter this and prevent the graveyard effect by using a Time Stop, as this causes Emrakul to be exiled. I think the other player still gets their extra turn though."
-Concerned_Bystander

You can let them have the extra turn if you want, but when this is cast, that ability is put on the stack on top of this, much like cascade and you can time stop in response to the extra turn ability to remove that from the stack also.

This is a great card fourth turn- unless you are unlucky enough to draw it in your opening hand which happens a surprising amount of the time. And then its just too big- this is something ive found-the annihilator 6 is nice, but like i saw some people say- it just ends the game prematurely most of the time, which is near no fun :P. As fun as it is to get it out, take another turn, and see half my opponents battlefield gone, its less fun to play eldrazi green for three games before people refuse to play it, and are done in general for a few hours. Overall- brilliant concept, well conceived, but just too big.
Thanks to WotC and Magic for a lovely game and the hours of fun I've had and will have in the future. Design and Development keep doing what you do- it keeps the game interesting.

I'm really disappointed with what Wizards did with this card. Before you can play all the characters from the story and ones that have a lot to do with the flavor of the set without totally wrecking the game you're playing.
Wizards just made a gigantic card threw in as many keywords as they could think of and made it nearly invincible (short of some certain shenanigans with enchantments or Time Stop). After they finished making this card they figured if it ever resolved the other player was probably going to lose, so they gave it a mana cost so high that they figured it probably get much play.
That's not how cards should be designed! You look back to the Onslaught block and you see Phage, Akroma, Karona and they are all playable! You can cast them, and sure, they're powerful (excepting Karona), but the game continues. They're fun cards to play with, not just some gigantic card that you'll probably never play.

This would have been a much cooler card if it was something like this:
Emrakul, the Aeons Torn:
0
As an additional cost of playing ~, sacrifice X permanents
Flying, trample, shroud, annihilator 3
~'s power and toughness are both equal to X

Of course the card above would absolutely broken, as everyone would play it the first turn to get some early game land destruction, but something more playable would be so much better than what we have here.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but casting Virulent Swipe to give your creature deathtouch would not kill Emrakul, the Aeons Torn as he has protection from ALL colored spells. This protection ultimately means that he can not be dealt damage by colored spells and in order for deathtouch to kill him, he must be dealt damage.

I personally think that this card is proof that R&D does a very good job of testing absolutely everything they produce. Going through the comments, you'll see so many people complaining about how broken and over-powered this is, but in reality it is, while a very good card, isn't even format defining in Standard.

Opponent: What could you possibly do to me with five mana?

You: I tap four lands for green mana, play Elvish Piper, equip Lightning Greaves, tap my remaining forest to use Piper's special ability, put Emrakul onto the battlefield, equip Emrakul with Lightning Greaves, attack you for 15 in the air with annihilator 6.

Far as i remember, the best way to stop her when cast is Time Stop, since it will remove both her and her ability from the game, next best thing would be mindbreak trap even thought they'd still get the extra turn.

@Madscorpion:
Note the "Can't be countered" in the textbox, and you don't need moonlace to clone her...

For anyone else who might not have thought about it, you can still cheat her into play from the grave if you have good timing... or a stifle...

that's usually what i do,
Turn 1 Island,
Turn 2 Swamp, Entomb Emrakul, Stifle her shuffling ability
Turn 3 Land, Animate Dead, OR dark rit into Dody Double (so you can keep a copy dead)

you could also cast the dark rit on turn 2 to get her out since animate dead costs 2. (AKA 4 mana emrakul)

it's funny though... no one seemed to mention that Ulamog can blow her up if she did happen to hit play :D

Either that or you could replicate Ghostfire 4 times after casting it :P (we'll assume you also have 15 mana and the Djinn Illuminatus in play)

EDIT:
Also, FEAR THE TENTACLE ICEBERG!!!

I hate you Emrakul.... but only as much as I hate the other cards that I hate. You have recently been the victim of a great unjustice. I will probably never see you in play ever again. I will *almost miss you. Dealing with your other two siblings will not be nearly as special as dealing with you. Rest in peace within everyone's binder.

P.S. Hey Emrakul, remember that time you were cast and then afterward, for some reason, your controller felt the need to play a Douchebag Marauder when you were his only other creature? And then I Shocked the Marauder before his trigger resolved? Yeah, I will never forget that. Good times.

ways that a sliver deck can handle this beastly beast:

1) Ghostflame sliver+Necrotic sliver=
all slivers are colorless, and this then breaks the "protection from colored spells" and thus with this helping you, you are then able to destroy the unk for a mere sacrifice and three grey mana. you may also use Ghostflame and Psionic sliver for this. you would be using more slivers, and quite possibly losing more slivers, but the effect is the same.

2) Mesmeric sliver+Screeching sliver+Heart sliver=
as a sliver comes into play, mesmeric's effect takes place, so you fateseal 1. knowing what your opponent has now, you may either send ity to to bottom of their library with the second effect of Fateseal 1, or you may use the haste given by heart sliver to tap the incomin sliver, and therefor using screeching siver's effect that mills one card, therefore a)limiting your opponent's mana/ eldrazi spawn count, b) limiting the kind of cards in your opponent's hand, c) knowing exactly what your opponent might be planning, and d) if when using the fateseal 1 effect from Mesmeric you come across this card, you may then send it strait to their library's bottom, thus putting it as physically far away as possible from the field other than putting out of play.

3) Ghostflame+Frenetic sliver+Crypt sliver=
after all of this, you opponent manages to somehow get this hulk out, and even dare attack, you simply choose the six that are sacrificed, and then, using Frenetic's help, remove them from play before they hit the grave. even if frenetic fails, there is still crypt sliver to fall back on to bring them before they hit the grave. you could also just use crypt. that way you could also regenerate all slivers you send to block this, and with ghostflame out, you could even kill it. if you have Toxin sliver out as well seeing as it has deathtouch and preventing regeneration, you just need one blocker. now, if you had Toxin, and then Talon sliver out as well, deathtouch and first strike. BOOM goes the hulky, and back into the deck he goes to start the process all over again.

Needless to say, WotC made slivers just too dang powerful if even this has THREE simple ways to get around it with multiple ways to get the same effect.

Boring.

There's no design to this card. It is just big and stompy without having any real reason for being so. Without a color restriction, every deck that can muster 15 colorless or cheat a creature into play automatically plays Emmy instead of any number of other, more interesting and flavorful creatures. And for what? A wanna-be Darksteel Colossus that doesn't even have the flavor of being an artifact. It just is, and it is just boring.

Why does Emrakul tear the aons? Does it produce some time-warping wave out of its slightly disturbing crevice? No. That would be a blue thing.

Why does Emrakul have annihilator? Obviously it crushes you ruthlessly, but that's a red thing.

Why does Emrakul have a mish-mosh of random abilities which make no sense together with no common reference points? That's a poor design thing.

@MechaKraken: Sorry to burst YOUR bubble, but as it has already been explained, Journey To Nowhere triggers when it enters the battlefield. It may be white, but it's not a spell anymore, so it removes Emrakul. Just as Avatar Of Woe or Visara The Dreadful can just kill/reshuffle it with a tap.

I know they are already overkill, but I think Kozilek, Butcher Of Truth and Emrakul should also have gotten indestructible, just for flavor reasons.

@MechaKraken: Here is how journey to nowhere works.

You play JTN. It goes on the stack. It is a white spell with no target, as it is a global enchantment.
JTN enters the battlefield. Its ETB effect triggers, going on the stack. It is a white triggered effect, not a spell, thus it can target Emrakul.

You do not have to announce what JTN is going to exile until it resolves and its ETB effect goes on the stack. If it were an aura like Arrest, then you would have to target it when it goes on the stack and Emrakul would be protected from it.

@ultratog1028: It is banned because it is hard to remove (most removal is Swords/Pongify/Bant Charm and the like, that is, they are spells that target) and can kill a whole board. Oblivion Ring and Journey to Nowhere are the only cards that see play that can really deal with it. People do not play it AS THEIR GENERAL. People use tricks to get it on the board (Jhoria, Braids, Defense of the Heart, Oath of Druids, Tooth and Nail, et cetera). I personally feel the Pacts should be banned as well, but that is just me. Hive Mind could be banned, however, the card is fun anyway, so long as people are not an ass and play a Pact or Final Fortune along with it.

This guy from my casual play group dropped Emrakul, the Aeons Torn twice in a single 3 person game we were playing, and he did it very early each time by playing this green spell (I don't recall the name offhand) that basically had him pull the top 7 cards from his library and put a creature card from among them into play without paying its mana cost and putting the remaining 6 cards at the bottom of his library. Because it wasn't cast, he didn't get the extra turn, and that was the key to making him much easier to defeat. I ended up killing him with a Clone, which while being a colored spell didn't target Emrakul, it did put an identical Legendary Creature into play, causing them both to be destroyed. But if he'd actually cast that bad boy, I would have been crying.

emrakul can be blocked by creature bcuz the creature is only a spell wen u play them.

my question: could Nihil Spellbomb work against emrakul's, When Emrakul is put into a graveyard from anywhere, its owner shuffles his or her graveyard into his or her library, effect. nihil spellbomb's effect is; Tap, Sacrifice nihil spellbomb: Exile all cards from target players graveyard.

@Danloresh:
Yeah, it works, cause if you respond to emrakul going in grave, it will be exiled before it's ability will trigger, and after that your opponent shuffles his/hers empty grave to his library.

@Roflmager:
Almost good, but razor boomerang says: "Razor Boomerang deals 1 damage to target creature or player." So deathtouch doesn't matter, but if you have heavy arbalest instead, in which case the creature deals that damage, it will work.

It ISNT allowed. First of all, Emrakul has protection from coloured spells, phyrexian metamorph is a coloured spell.

But lets say you make the spell colourless with something like Ersatz Gnomes, Moonlace, or Mycosynth Lattice. you still have to deal with the fact that Emrakul is Legendary, meaning as soon as you got that second one in they would both die as a state-based effect. You would still get your extra turn though.

@ EternalPhi
necava was wrong but you're actually more wrong. Metamorph doesn't target protection stops targeting, damaging enchanting and blocking, metamorph does no of those when you cast it, you can copy him just fine and they will both die. Also, there is no possible way to "copy" Emrakul's extra turn ability, it happens when he's cast, you can't copy that. Finally if metamorph did target, moonlace and Ersatz Gnomes would not be able to bypass the protection because the colored spell can't even target him. Don't correct people if you don't know what you're saying.

Though Emrakul is on the unofficial banned list (as a casual only format there is no official banned list), it is possible to build a completely colorless Commander deck. Karn, Silver Golem is a more popular choice for this, because you will have to invest HEAVILY in artifact mana, and Karn + lots of artifacts is a winning strategy itself.

You can try building a deck with Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre or Kozilek, Butcher of Truth instead, but be prepared to shill out a lot of money tracking down the expensive colorless mana sources you'll need to run such a deck. I wouldn't recommend it unless you already have most of the oldschool colorless lands.

Actually, there is an official banned list for EDH/Commander (though many groups will houserule the list): See http://mtgcommander.net/rules.php . Where the confusion comes from is that that site lists Emrakul as banned, but the Sets and Legality tab here lists him as legal for Commander (which is just another name for EDH). Personally, I'd assume that he's actually banned, and that the Wizards folks just forgot to update that in their database, since the Wizards folks recognize the folks at that other link as the arbiters of the format's rules; Wizards is just adding the information here and in the Comprehensive Rules as a convenience.

This is just a list of cards off the top of my head that can and WILL deal with this Eldrazi.

Funniest thing to do is: Cast Journey to Nowhere or Oblivion Ring, once it resolves and enters the battlefield the first ability hits the stack, simply stack a Naturalize or some other card that destroys an enchantment at instant speed. Naturalize will destroy the enchantment, the second ability triggers doing nothing, then the enchantments first ability resolves and the creature is exiled FOREVER! Well until the next game.

Something that's a bit disconcerting that I see is a lot of people are showing counters for it...but they're mosly all colored. It's rules say it has protection from color. That's okay, though, there is an artifact that can insta-kill Emrakul. Thought Prison. You are welcome.

Sweet karakas combo. He is too powerful for edh. A floating time warp in your exile zone is nuts. In addition, 15 colorless mana is not much in edh multiplayer. There are many ways to get infinite colorless mana combos. Here is one off the top of my head, power artifact, and basalt monolith.

(Really? The fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth? X-D)

EDH was becoming less of a Magic game but more of a race to 15 and win. If you ran him, you only needed to get something like Channel (which is now, also banned) going or some other similar insane mana combo and you would wreck your opponent's field with the Annil 6 so even if it was a mirror match, there was no hope of recovering. If you were playing against it, all you could do it hope to disrupt them enough so your win condition could step in.

In other words, it was format warping. This is why most cards are banned.

Funny enough, this is still legal in "Commander" as Wizards hasn't updated it under the "Sets & Legality" tab as of this post. The generally accepted source for EDH rules is here for those interested:

wow that is depressing I got first comment and it was deleted along with every other comment I did for Eldrazi cards. But the important thing is has anyone noticed its name can be shortened to EAT? cause it eats games I guess

@tabqwerty

You know that protection from colored spells, doesn't actually do anything when its a creature card in a deck? You also know that Polymorph doesn't:

Deal damage to EAT
Enchant EAT
Block EAT
Target EAT

It doesn't do any of that when it flips cards and puts Emrakul into play, you can't cast Polymorph on Emrakul, but the effect can put him into play.

Lastly, you know a bunch of people play a deck like this right? I dunno how many people could get break the rules...

Turn 2: Draw overgrown battlement. Tap two overgrown battlements to play the other two that you have.

Turn 3: Draw Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. Tap 4 overgrown battlements to play Emrakul, the Aeons Torn.

Emrakul has protection from colored spells, not colors, so there are any number of ways to neutralize this, or steal it from your opponent, or kill it.

Seasinger, Captivating Vampire, Cytoplast Manipulator, Empress Galina, Helm of Possession, Infernal Denizen, Keiga, the Tide Star, Memnarch, Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker, Rubinia Soulsinger or her cousin Merieke Ri Berit, Willow Satyr, Crown of Empires, Trip Noose, Icy Manipulator, Royal Assassin, Amber Prison, Tsabo Tavoc, Aphetto Grifter, Attrition, Diversionary Tactics, Elder Druid, Altar of Shadows, Air Servant, Naya Battlemage, Necrotic Sliver, Opposition, Telekinetic Sliver, etc. etc. etc.

All that said, I love the flavor of the Eldrazi cards, and really want to make an Eldrazi deck at some point.

Broken card, just like any annihilator card. For those talking about multple methods to deal with this, it requires your turn unless you can cast as though your spells had flash or somethong of the sort since not only can he not be countered and prot. from colored spells, he gives an extra turn. By that time that he attacks next turn, the 6 sac. hurts along with his 15 power. Annihilator, one of those mehcnaics that leaves you wondering, what was wizards on that day

"Oh!... Oh my god!... (wipes eye with tentacle). How did this happen?"

"It appears he provoked another patron of the bar, one Mossbridge Troll, and was killed due to blunt-force trauma on the, um, head... body... thing."

"But... I don't understand. Emerakul always had the highest power and toughness of anybody in town!"

"Yes, but see here? The second part of Mr. Troll's card text? It clearly shows that he was on drugs at the time, and was obviously the only one capable of murdering your husband."

"What? What the hell?! How could that happen? What can I say, really? He's just the biggest, burliest, brutiest badass ever to hit the game. And he defines what mythic should be (Legendary awesomeness, huge mana cost, unique abilities, not for every deck) and shouldn't be (abilities a bit much proportionate for mana cost, but then again he does cost 15)

My problem with emrakuel isn't that he wins the game. Once you've reached 15 mana you ought to be winning the game. But not if somebody else already did. That's my problem, no matter what your opponents position, dropping emrakuel will win you the game. Maybe not 'no matter what' but damn near (at least in modern where there's all of 2 preventative answers). It's not just that he can bring a game back from the brink, that's usually really cool to see happen and generally has alot of interaction, but There's nothing even that clever in dropping this. Just, "hey it's Cthulhu! GG!".

Delicious but I just want more! This broadcast brought to you by the taste of marshmallow peeps just like satisfaction you get when you break a man's will and mind and devour his soul!" but seriously, 15 mana is not hard...granted it may take a bit but run him in a colorless artifact deck with blinkmoth urns and urzatron, done like turn 4-5 hardcasted if you aren't running cloudposts and vesuvas. Yeah it ain't flashy but it works...granted it's far easier to just run the sneak and tell legacy deck lol...that thing's just funny...

Its a bit of a pain for my mill deck for obvious reasons, but thats about it. If he is snuck out I can usually get him dead, and if you ramped up the 15 mana to hard cast him then I was probably dead anyway.

That said, yes, he is a mighty finisher. Pro points if you use Lightning Mauler with him or Sneak him out with suspend or Fist of Suns and still get the 'cast' bonuses.

Also it is bad when your foil prerelease art is so bad it is noticably cheaper than your normal printing.

Here's a weird thought.

When Emrakul is put into a graveyard from anywhere, its owner shuffles his or her graveyard into his or her library.

It does not specifically state that Emrakul goes with it.

SO apparently, other than exiling it, one way to make sure this damn thing stays dead is to stick it in the graveyard of someone other than its owner.

No. Venser's ability exiles him, then brings him back. Emrakul's "take an extra turn" occurs when you CAST him, not when he comes into the battlefield. As you did not cast him when he returns, you do not get an extra turn.

The original art is a bit... confusing. There's no obvious indicator of size, and it's difficult to tell what exactly your looking at. For that reason, I'm glad I have the alt art for my Elf Ramp deck. That way my opponents understand what's coming at them on turn 3-4 much better.

On functionality though, this card is good fun. It's durable, evasive, and feels very mythic. Though between this and Kozilek, Butcher of Truth, I'm not sure which has proven more useful to me. Emrakul wipes my opponent's field, and if I have Concordant Crossroads lying out, he gets to swing twice. But with Kozilek, the uncounterable draw power has one me more games than I can count. So their both awesome in their own right. And both win the game fairly easily. Though in the end, I might have more fun with Emrakul, simply because that extra turn never gets old.

In conclusion, this card is epic, and even more so when it can come out alarmingly early. An obvious 5/5.

Kinda makes Draco look bad though.

The way the Eldrazi block was done flavor-wise was exceptionally clever: multiple cards printed in the earlier two sets have potent effects that are rendered powerless against the Eldrazi. Examples:

1) Iona, Shield of Emeria lets you bar a colour. That's just dandy.
2) Terra Eternal won't save your lands from being sacrificed
3) Agadeem Occultist is a minor example, but the CMC of most Eldrazi is prohibitively high.
4) Anowon, the Ruin Sage will be making a full-on Eldrazi deck sacrifice an Eldrazi Spawn token every turn rather than doing anything useful.
5) Brave the Elements, although that was probably unintentional since it's a pretty standard utility.
6) Deathless Angel's indestructibility fails to protect creatures from annihilator. (This is a common theme among the set's angels, the reason being that most of them were supporters of the "gods" which turned out to be world-devouring monstrosities)
7) Emerge Unscathed, while in the same set, fails hilariously against Eldrazi.
8) Eternity Vessel. This one's a fair bit of a stretch, but either you sacrifice it to annihilator or sacrifice useful things and end up falling further behind.

There's a bunch of other cool things too.

Amusing side note - Archon of Redemption gives you 15 life when Emeria is freed!

I'm so tired of people thinking that others cards have effect on this creature, it is pro colour, which means you cant mind control it, destroy, bounce, or exile it with anything that isn't stated as colourless, or an artifact. such things as Dominating Licid can not take control of it, you can't O ring it. in short to deal with him you'll need to Voidstone Gargoyle him to stop him from entering the battlefield, but once there, you need to mass wipe him.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
Thank you.
Also, is annihilator an activated ability? (activated by attacking?) if so does that mean i could pithing needle him?

Emrakul... how thou art loathed. It seems like if you're playing in casual environments (ie. kitchen table Magic), having Emrakul as a win condition is a very risky move. It's probably due to the sheer card advantage it provides, tacked onto an enormous evasive, tough to remove creature. With pseudo-haste if you hard cast it, it asks for an instant speed answer, but also limits what you can answer it with due to its protection. So I can certainly understand people's frustration with the big guy in casual decks...

... but on the other hand, in any format, if you allow your opponent to ramp to 15 mana and haven't won by that point, you probably deserve to lose. Heck, these days for 7 mana you can use a Diabolic Revelation to pick up any 2 cards in your deck - which means you can easily pick up 2 cards that form an infinite combo.

@knight3607: As Phyrexian Ingester enters the battlefield, it is a permanent and no longer a spell. Emrakul will not have protection from it.

@SteamyRayvon6969: You don't get the extra turn with a quicksilver amulet (or with show and tell, elvish piper, aether vial etc). It specifically says when you CAST it. You CAST it with either of the following:
* 15 mana
* Omniscience

@kolition: Protection from colored SPELLS. A card is a SPELL once you cast it. Once the SPELL resolves it becomes a PERMANENT. When the card is on the board it is a PERMANENT. Emrakul has no protection from permanents. Oblivion Ring's triggered ability affects Emrakul because Oblivion Ring is a permanent (since its ability is triggered by its entering the battlefield, which means Oblivion Ring has resolved and is no longer a spell). Dominating Licid affects Emrakul because it is an activated ability from a permanent. although in general, when you play an Aura card it is a spell that targets and as such Emrakul can't be hit by Mind Control or Pacifism or whatever.

Also, Annihilator is not an activated ability, it's a triggered ability. Pithing Needle won't touch that.

Some of these posts suggest that a colored spell could go on the stack targeting Emrakul by becoming colorless (e.g. via Ersatz Gnomes). This is wrong. Emrakul is not a legal target for a colored spell, and a spell cannot be put onto the stack with an illegal target. Pulling this off would require something like a Redirect so a colored spell already on the stack could change its target to Emrakul after becoming colorless.

As much as I hate to admit it, Emrakul has to be one of the best cards ever printed, in terms of Legacy play. I am not sure that I have ever seen any other card impact the game like this one. Yes, you can list 100 different ways to kill it, but that doesn't change the fact that 99% of the methods you would usually use to kill things don't work on it, and that its very presence forces you to engage in one of those other methods. And half of the suggestions I've seen posted require sorceries or enchantments... Journey to Nowhere? Innocent Blood? Wrath of God? I don't think so. Hardcasting an Emrakul nets an extra turn and then annihilation. Good luck surviving until your next main phase.

And to the extent that you're capable of killing it, it's just as easily defended... Lightning Greaves (or a counterspell or Stifle if it requires instant protection), which now threatens you with annihilator 12 before you see your next turn.

And being able to kill it doesn't really help if you're unprepared and suddenly find yourself facing the loss of all your permanents before you can do anything. It's the game-ender of game-enders with almost no response. Its existence in your deck prevents you from being milled, and there are more ways to combo with it or into it than there are to kill it. Yes, a Karakas will send it away... it will also combo for infinite turn-taking/annihilation.

Anyone who believes this card is overrated because weaknesses exist is simply mistaken. If you can cast it in the first 4 turns with a counterspell in your hand, then with rare exception, you win. I have a combo deck that does precisely this with remarkable consistency, and it just can't be beaten by anything but the best of decks. There are few weapons against Emrakuls and counterspells. They do exist; they're things like Mindbreak Traps and Extirpates, or Stifles to shut down that extra turn. A Quicken can also go a long way to make other defenses available. Intrepid Hero, Royal Assassin, or Soul Snare can be a nice obstacle, but putting your faith in permanents is dangerous. And it's not like I'm going to play my Emrakul with an Intrepid Hero on the table. I'll drop a Snap or something first. But yes, there are pretty direct instant-speed attacks on an Emrakul that has already hit the table: Wing Shards, Diabolic Edict. But you've got to have the mana spare.

One way or another, in order to stop it, you've got to know that it's on its way. It could cost 500 mana, and it would be just about as good. A card like Emrakul should never have been printed.
Legal in every format except Commander (understandably): 5/5

(If you want to get one into play, remember that the "Shuffle your graveyard" ability uses the stack and can be beaten out by an instant. Since it has protection from colored spells, something like Makeshift Mannequin is actually pretty safe, but there are tons of options along graveyard lines. Defense of the Heart is pretty epic. And there's the ever-classic Elvish Piper. If you're looking for ways to cast it, there's always elves and/or Gaea's Cradle, Fist of Suns. And check around for "cast without paying its mana cost" abilities. Don't overlook the hideaway lands from Lorwyn. I'm pretty fond of the Shelldock Isle + Doomsday combo.)

My preferred method of casting him is to get out a Pili Pala and a Grand Architect. Using this infinite mana, cast Spawnsire of Ulamog. Next, activate Spawnsire's ability to cast Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, It That Betrays, and a whole bunch of other Eldrazi minions. Emrakul's extra turn keeps one's opponent from responding--unless he flashes in a day of judgement. That isn't exactly an easy solution on one's third turn. (Note that having extra Spawnsires and Sphinx of Magosis available is probably a good idea).

@hagire:

Not that I know of, unless SaT makes the enchantment not a spell for some reason.

You also must target something that is in play when you declare the trigger. If I'm not mistaken, both go on the stack at the same time. SaT is a sorcery, meaning you must play it on your turn, making you active player. This means that the person who played SaT for emrakul will put emrakul on the stack first, then comes the treachery. Since emrakul is not in play, treachery cannot target it.

So, no, that would not work as far as I know.

As a note on this card, this card is just awesome. It requires the opponent to deal with it immediately, and usually on extremely early turns. If you can give it haste as well, like with Tin Fins, it's just an instant win card. So what if you have some way to kill it? It doesn't matter if I swing you for 30 annihilator 12 since you'll almost always be just outright dead.

This card is certainly something you have to combo around, but it's always going to be one hell of a combo.

It isn't the hardest card to kill but the major issue is that it gives it's controller that extra turn. That pretty much means you can't play creatures, enchantments, sorceries, etc. until after you have either taken 15 damage and/or sacrificed 6 pernaments. Obviously you have to keep Emrakul busy for that extra turn that he gets so Rathi Trapper and Royal Assassin work nicely together. Of course you'd have to have both of those creatures on the board before Emrakul hits but if you are playing an Elrazi deck it should be pretty obvious that some monstrous creatures are coming your way.

Protection from Colored spells means he cannot be the assigned target for a spell, not apermanent. One can Oblivion Ring him because it's already a permanent when ti chooses its target, while one can NOT Doom Blade him because it never becomes a permanent.

We are wondering, because of annihilator 6 I had to sacrifice creatures, which as far as I know, still counts as dying. Reaper from the abyss morbid ability is that at the end step when a creature dies you can destroy target non demon creature. Does the classify as a noncoloured spell? Or will it not work because of Emrakuls protection? Things are getting so complicated my word

Draw into Concordant Crossroads at the beginning of your turn. Play 1Green mana then drop Exploration and a second Green mana. Use the untapped Green mana to play Concordant Crossroads. Your turn 2. Drop the other 2Green mana and play Elvish Piper. Your turn 3. tap Elvish Piper and 1Green mana and put him down and swing away for 6 annihilator when they have less than 6 permanents anyway. also you can put down the 2 cards you drew. It's taken a while, but I think I've figured out why I never liked the Eldrazi. Eldritch abominations are awesome, I've always had a soft spot for massive creatures, and heck, if you can assemble this much mana, go ahead and summon Cthulhu. While the cheating into play is a pain, you don't get the turn or Vindicate or Tidings. However, I don't really like how Annihilator works. Just by existing, everything explodes. I would have preferred if the Eldrazi had to actually hit to annihilate, and could've had their annihilator numbers increased.

Also, they probably could've used a Phage-like 'If it came into play but you didn't cast it trigger' rather than the shuffle, but then I guess we wouldn't have a colorless answer to mill. Which in itself is a problem...

@Continue: I do think you have a point - but I feel the need to bring up a counterpoint. Here's why Emrakul does wrong for all three types of players:

For Timmies, Emrakul represents the ultimate fattie, one that's so over-the-top that nothing can top it. One Timmy might loved his Akroma while the other enjoyed his Avenger of Zendikar. Once they know about Emrakul and perhaps played with it, everything else is instantly dwarfed and instantly seems less cool than before. Those Timmies who never have an Emrakul may remark bitterly, "well that card is stupid anyways." But in any case, a part of their Timmy-ness has died. When a card gets close to saying you win the game, it tends not to feel like something 2.5 times more awesome than Akroma, say -- it tends to remind you that it's all just a game. Like an item that you get late in an rpg that defeats the final boss in one hit. It takes away a lot of epicness from the story, and Emrakul comes very close to "I win."

For Johnnies, I wouldn't put a lot of value on Emrakul as a finisher, since infinite combos have no lack for finishers. There are many combos involving Emrakul, but most are about ways to cheat it into play (Summoning Trap, Windbrisk Heights) or utilizing its high mana cost (like Erratic Explosion). These are all far too obvious combos for a real Johnny. A Johnny wants to show what he can do, differently, in his unique way. If a Johnny has an Elvish Piper, he wants to set up something no one has seen before (I tried to come up with an example, but being the Spike I am, my best attempt is an Angel of Serenity in response to something). If he summons the Piper and the opponent who's never seen his deck goes like, "I guess Emrakul is coming", that's just so predictable and unsatisfying.

For Spikes, the power level of Emrakul creates problems, specifically in decks like Show and Tell. Like dredge, Show and Tell is a kind of degenerate deck that doesn't leave your opponent with a lot of ways to interact with it. This results in games being decided by whether you can draw one or more of the 3 (or 8 or whatever number) of solutions in your deck. Granted this is Legacy, and degenerate combos are all over the place. But if the recent surge of dredge hosers is any indicator, non-interactive decks (that require very specific solutions) can pose a problem if they're strong enough.

With all these said, I have a more neutral view of Emrakul - it's a good thing that it exists, but it's also a good thing we don't see more like it. It's just a little bit too much.

And then I played Lazav, Dimir Mastermind. And he became Lazav, the Aeons Torn.

Which... Adding Hexproof to Emrakul just makes him that much harder to get rid of. Sure, I didn't get the extra turn, but since Lazav had been around for a bit, I DID get to attack the moment he transformed.

Hellurin listed some of the cards that can neutralize Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. Here is that list edited for Lazav, the Aeons Torn:

"Oh boom, I got this ULTRA BIG FLYING BEAST OUT, which has summoning sick...Oh wait I get an extra turn." I mean seriously, the cards that can hurt him could be out easily, but knowing a player, who would know how to get rid of cards, wouldn't be afraid, or just dumb for bringing him out. SO, on that extra turn, 15/15 coming at you, sac 6, even if you don't get through. Six permanents, that itself can ruin a game. I give him 4/5, I have an Eldrazi deck, and it works just beautifully with him sitting at the throne of it.

EDIT FOR SERIOUS STUFF:
@DimirSnail
Emrakul is far from being the best card ever printed. Emrakul is not broken. He costs 15 mana. He can be countered. The trick is not to kill Emrakul, if that happens you are dead. What you need to do is disrupt whatever means your opponent is using to bring him up, whether that means killing their Urzatron, or just racing them, Emrakul requires significant dedication in order to bring out, and it will quickly be clear if that is your opponents win condition.

Vorthos sees a card that makes all of his plots to inflict mental agony on his opponent feel tame.
Melvin takes Wizards to court because Emrakul is too powerful, being a nearly unstoppable game-ender that's barely even a real creature.

I wanna see a reprint like the slivers where spaghetti monsters become more humanoid. And since he's an eldrazi titan, and the largest at that, I wanna see the art done like the colossal titan from attack on titan :D

Ulamog could be the armoured titan since he's indestructible.
And kozilek could be the ape titan or female titan since it's crafty.

Until these cards drop to 10 dollars or under, I know what i'm using as my proxy art :)

I run an Ulvenwald Tracker in my mono green deck, almost exclusively to take care of threats like this.

Opponent drops Emrakul, everyone groans and throws their hands onto the table.

End of his turn, tap two to flash in ambush viper, another two to make him fight Emrakul.

Not only am I the new hero of the game, but I got to enjoy the flavor and imagery of a bitchy little viper biting his little fangs into Emrakul's gigantic, quasi-biological, eon-tearing ass.

Cheat him out with Rakdos, Lord of Riots and Master of Cruelties.

If Emrakul is in play, go toe to toe with Pit Spawn or Kaldra (Helm of Kaldra, Shield of Kaldra, Sword of Kaldra). Activate Mangara of Corondor. If he's in hand, use Ghastlord of Fugue . If he just died, use Withered Wretch, Deathrite Shaman, or have Samurai of the Pale Curtain in play.

He does die. Plenty of other ways...and not UNUSUAL cards that nobody would play. Legacy Weapon, Ashen Rider...I mean COME ON.

You can even go old school and play Tormod's Crypt...I remember it was a race between it and Feldon's Cane.

5/5 just for being a cool card

I don't like to see it cheated it into play though, it takes away some of the mythic feeling when it shows up way sooner than it should. Should have at least "you must actually generate 15 mana to cast Emraul, the Aeons torn. This cost cannot be reduced"

@Xienombe Emrakul, the Aeons Torn wouldn't hit the graveyard because of his last ability. When Emrakul, the Aeons Torn is put into a graveyard from anywhere, its owner shuffles it into his or her library That's added just to prevent exactly what you plan to do.
Voseph
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
@TheZigs You can do that though! Emrakul does hit the graveyard, he just has a shuffle trigger when he does. Just respond to the shuffle trigger with some sort of instant speed recursion and bam, turn 1 Emrakul!

@TheZigs It works, because the ability goes in to the stack. Instant speed animation and its done.

Once we figure out how to get them on the same stratum (q.v. Emrakul at least normally has flying), a well-timed (as in probably flickered at the right moment) Veiled Sentry will be up to the task of striking this horror down...So at least that's one (somewhat) easy way to get Emrakul out of your hair.

Doesnt Ashen Rider still target? I could be wrong, since I'm just recently coming back to the game after a hiatus. Since Emrakul has protection from colored spells, you wouldn't be able to target him with the Rider's ability, I don't think.

When I first got into Magic I thought the Eldrazi were a pretty interesting concept. Anything based off of Lovecraft's stories must be damn cool. Not much of a win condition, but something that's a nice game finisher once you scrape up 10-15 mana.

But then people started to actually blow 40-50 bucks on these and stick them in decks that cheated them out - Quicksilver Amulet being a fan favorite. A turn 4 Emrakul is not a fun thing to deal with, even without the extra turn. Odds are you'll only have 4 lands and maybe 2-3 creatures, if that, to annihilate. He and the rest of the Eldrazi are just stupidly powerful with no drawbacks besides their high mana cost.

That being said there are still plenty of methods to get rid of him - naturally any sort of artifacts (Executioner's Capsule being my favorite) or world spells (Merciless Eviction, Worldfire, Apocalypse, Damnation, etc.) 3/5 for flavor, but the missing 2 stars are for no drawbacks.

Hmmm... To troll, or not to troll. Can't say I like it, can't say I hate it. Kind of interesting that someone had the impression that the prospect of an additional turn would make people less likely to cheat him/her(?) into play. Haven't faced it and wouldn't want to. You should probably already have won by the time you get to 15 mana, so apart from using some manner of shortcut, Emrakul feels utterly pointless. "Ha! Look how much I'm winning now!" If you're some kind of tentacle aficionado, or maybe a Pastafarian, and this card gets you off, go for it, I guess. There is way more interesting stuff you can do with that much mana, and if you just wanted to win at that point, a big fireball does the trick without frightening any Japanese school girls. "Well, couldn't my X burn spell be countered?", you might ask. Yes. Don't be so ana l-retentive. It's a multi-player game. You're supposed to interact with other 'walkers. Cards that effectively win right then by themselves are dull. 3/5 My typical trolling effort usually comes with a 0.5/5, but I have a soft spot for poor, neglected creatures, and big, beefy ones in particular. Emrakul doesn't raise my ire the way that Obliterator does, but it also doesn't turn my creature crank like a Spiritmonger or an Argothian Wurm. Glad the eldrazi are gone.

I don't really think it's THAT game changing for competitive play. With 15 mana, you can slam someone with an Urza's Rage or other huge burn spell to get near victory, and as for cheating him in, there's always going to be some ridiculous monster you can do that with, such as Progenitus or Blightsteel Colossus. All Emrakul is to me is just another way of doing things that have existed for a long time.

Emrakul should never have been printed, and not for why you think.

The problem with Emrakul is that it is so impossibly good, difficult to remove, and essentially ends the game after her first attack EVEN IF the opponent doesn't actually lose, that it supplants every other fatty creature a deck would ever want to cheat into play. Or hardcast, for what that's worth.
(Side note: The Flavor Guide says Emrakul has a female personality/character to her. Look it up, apparently the Eldrazi have gender identity)

Just think, even Worldspine Wurm isn't as good with Sneak Attack or Through the Breach even though it hits for just as much and then makes THREE 5/5s with trample when it dies (which Sneak Attack and Through the Breach can make use of). Griselbrand sees some play in decks with Show and Tell along with Sneak Attack, but that's more because he can draw SEVEN cards even if he never gets to swing.

Whenever a Johnny sees a mana combo or a creature cheat, he/she doesn't think about a number of things to play, he/she only thinks about Emrakul. And that's unfortunate, because there are a hundred epic cards that have never seen the spotlight and deserve to.

CAN PEOPLE PLEASE REMEMBER THAT HE'S GOT PROTECTION FROM COLORED SPELLS?
It makes me want to vomit whenever I see someone talking about targeting Emrakul with something that can't target him because it's colored.

Since creatures' abilities don't count as spells, you can use Dark Imposter's ability, with possible mana ramp to get your mana by the time they get their Emrakul, (given that you kept the mana open), to exile Emrakul and gain his activated abilities. Or you can use Olivia Voldaren and kill your opponent with their own creature. Either are really fun to do.

"You should probably already have won by the time you get to 15 mana"

Not necessarily. If you have 15 mana, yes, you will be able to play probably any card in your deck, but that doesn't mean that you have enough cards to cast with all that mana. Emrakul is not win-more. Just because you have 15 mana doesn't mean that you are winning. After all, what if your opponent has 15 mana as well? Also, about the Fireball thing, Fireball can only be used in red decks, while Emrakul can be used in any color deck.

Oh, and I'm not sure if people are still complaining about why this eldritch godly monster ever obeys you, but I'll give my answer. Keep in mind that in this game you are a planeswalker, and that means that you basically have godly powers yourself. Yes, Emrakul can beat you in two hits, but you can just as easily defeat her by breaking a Brittle Effigy (keep in mind that I'm talking about flavor here; I'm not trying to make one of those "Emrakul sucks because she dies to removal" arguments).

Hey a question. If I have a card that has an ability that returns from graveyard to hand as an instant, could I use that to get him back? Also to kill use a deadly recluse with I think a shearpoint oriad bestowed(or really any instance of first strike) to install kill emcrapul, the undies torn

My son runs a green ramp deck with all kinds of trouble in it. My simple solution is Clone.

It doesn’t target the creature, so it deals with all the protected, hexproof creatures. Then I slap on Unflinching Courage, so every time I defend myself I’m bigger than him and he dies, and I get the 20 Lifegain or whatever.
