wow this card is really awesome, if you play green and your cards are getting countered all the time, it gives you a free creature to the field, and that creature could be something big. Even if you don't play it as a trap, still pretty good, though the mana cost is a bit high. In 7 cards of your library bound to find something.

This is a pretty good response to those pesky counterspell decks. "Um, yeah, since you countered that creature, I play this for nothing." Get Progenitus or Darksteel Colossus out with this thing and watch your opponents cry.

ignoring the countering part, play this in response to their declare attackers phase, plop down a baneslayer or baloths or something and block with it. If you drop an ob nixilis you could even also pop your fetch lands to pump him up and then block. All before the opponent know what happened

deffinatly a nice card, we will see how many people are playing counter spells, but paying 6 for a progenitus, or Iona, or darksteel, or anything else that goes thud when it hits, and you can do it on their turn, and swing on yours

I love it when blue decides to counter my River Boa (because of its lovely Islandwalk) then I plop this down to make a turn 2 Terra Stomper or Rampaging Baloths :D

turn 1: forest, lannowar elves turn 2: Island, elf, essence scatter, summoning trap, drop the biggest fatty you can get out of the 7, possible ones are Terra Stomper, Rampaging baloth, Progenitus, Kaldorian Behemoth, Godsire, Emperiical Archangelm Iona, Shield of Emeria, Baneslayer Angel, anything big that you would like turn 2 is good

Use Scroll Rack if you want to summon something from your hand.

Guest, the trap only triggers if the creature spell was countered by an opponent. You can't play this for free by countering your own creature.

Blue is getting stronger with the release of Mana Leak into standard... It will be interesting to see how many of these make it into decks now.

With mana leak running rampant its a good idea to through this into a deck and make the opponent work for you

Unlike the other traps, the alternate cost is just icing on the cake. Most of the time this is going to be used to grab some game ending fatty at instant speed for 6 in a ramp deck.

This one of the most powerful green spells in the entire game if not in all of the colors. You can play anything for free against a blue deck or something unmeasurably powerful for 6 on their turn or yours.

I like the fact that green is being made very powerful at the moment, makes me want to remake my old kraj edh with some of the new cards like this being printed,... green blue control, lol

This is perhaps the most frustrating card to play with, or against. If you play with it, you'll inevitably 'whiff' now and then (unless Summ Trap is your only noncreature, which is doubtful), and it'll drive you mad - especially if you've set it up so that your opponent needs to counter your threat, and then follow it up with just as big a threat.
When you're playing against it, it's frustrating because you effectively need two counters - one for the creature, then one for the trap. Nothing worse than holding counter mana up and still having it prove useless.
A great card, but frustrating as heck!

Let's examine the possible outcomes: Good- 4GG: Cast a creature from your deck as though it had flash. Better- 0: cast a creature from your deck. Preferably one that cost a ton of mana. Bad- 4GG: Seriously? The next seven cards in my deck were lands or summoning traps? Now all you have to do is try to get one of the better outcomes. In short find a way to look at and manipulate the top card of your deck and pray you're matched against a blue control deck.

I played this deck once. It was a what I thought was a standard green deck, then I heard "summoning trap" on turn three, then "emrakul the aeons torn" and I was washed. Unbelievable card if you have a bit of luck and skill in deck building. All you need is a green mana ramp deck with emrakul, ulamog, kozilek, or any big creature and you could play summoning trap hard on turn three like he did and annihilate your foes with eldrazi before they have enough permanents to sack.
what a cheap way to get the most impossable creatures into play such as progenitus maybe

Can't really complain about what you get if you play it for free after a countered creature: having any creature in play for free is better than nothing.

With noted differences, Reincarnation (graveyard), Natural Order (sac/color limiting), Green Suns Zenith (color limiting), Lure of Prey (hand), Tooth and Nail (expensive) and Defense of the Heart (time delay) are all alternatives that may serve you better than the Summoning Trap (top 7 only). Tooth and Nail has the fewest drawbacks, but costs the most. Maybe you get what you pay for. Certainly any/all can be built around for maximum effect.

People, the alternative casting cost is just icing on the cake.most of the time, it's just 6 mana to get a fatty. The is just against control matchups.
Hardcasted this thing is okay, not amazing but not horrible either. Allot of people like to splash blue and throw some counters in so its not a crazy idea to maindeck a pair of these into your green decks.
The real cool part about this card, any deck that has 20+ creatures you could put x4 of these in the sideboard. When u face a counter heavy deck, slap em in.

I'm trying to come up with combos to play this card for free. Here's the best I could come up with:
Use Bazaar Trader to give a Chalice of the Void with 0 counters to you opponent then cast Ornothoper (or some other 0 CMC card.) You'll probably also need a card to ensure that there's a creature worth grabbing near the top of your library (Brainstorm or Long-Term Plans or something.)
Seems like a lot of hoops to jump for just to cheat a creature into play though.

Oh, you countered my Eldrazi Drone? Here, have an Emrakul!
It's good sideboard and decent mainboard. You can easily draw out a counterspell early game and force RUG or similar aggro U strats to spend resources early game to not instant-lose. Also, two of these in hand is hilarious, as you'll likely get something through while they burn all of their counters.
Try to make sure your deck has something like 22+ creatures (a toolboxy nic fit deck, pod, or just a beatdown/stompy deck) that way your chance of hitting something is not only in the high 90th percentiles or so, but that your chance of hitting something good goes up.
Keep good value cards in there, preferably those with EtB effects so that you get extra benefits even if your opponent can kill the critter.

T1: Forest, Joraga Treespeaker
T2: Forest, level up Treespeaker, Explore, Forest
T3: Forest, attempt to play Primeval Titan, gets countered. Summoning Trap into Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. Opponent scoops.
