Furnace of Rath + Fling? About the simplest I could come up with...

In multiplayer game, you can attack the opponent with less life while keeping Malignus powerful.

This can usually kill a player with Fling and Reverberate.

This card scares me for several reasons:

1. I'm afraid of the chances I may run into this at the upcoming pre-release. I mean, look at this! Avacyn Restored doesn't have much in terms of removal, and facing what may be a 10/10 on turn 5 can be threatening if you're not prepared, although if he connects, he becomes a 5/5, but losing half my starting health is very painful.

2.The EDH possibilities for this card are endless! o.O

Anyone else see Rush of Blood? Or Curse of Bloodletting?

@Ness64
Man, if only there were a decent way to also give it vigilance in a Red or White deck. Wait, nevermind.

@Glech
Why not copy Fling three times to kill two opponents? It only costs 4RedRedRedRedRed...
Alternately, there's also Chandra, the Firebrand, but nobody likes her.

P.S. My ultimate goal is to give this double strike and equip it with twelve Quietus Spikes in Modern.

Say my opponent is at 8192 life. Malignus hits for 4096, first spike for 2048, second spike for 1024, third spike for 512, fourth spike for 256, fifth spike for 128, sixth spike for 64, seventh spike for 32, eighth spike for 16, ninth spike for 8, tenth spike for 4, eleventh spike for 2, twelfth spike for 1, then Malignus hits again for 1, killing my opponent. (There are twelve more triggers for quietus spike on the stack, but they could never kill my opponent since they round down.)

This can kill Progenitus when your opponent is at 20 if they block with him. They wouldn't, but still...

Actually, PhoenixZephyrus, the creature is sacrificed to Fling as an additional cost. If you look up Dual Casting, it says right in the rulings that the copy will deal just as much damage to the target as the original, which means that you could indeed throw Malignus at someone for the win.

And Ghostly Possession also works because Malignus himself says that his damage cannot be prevented. That takes precedence over any "prevent" effect.

I pulled this at the prerelease and this guy handed me victory at least 8 times, 2 or 3 of which where straight out of the jaws of defeat. I do believe this to be a bit broken, but it was great to have on my side.

This card scares my little brother, who is a skilled magic player by his own right. This guy is just down right powerful in any kind of game you play him in. He's going to be a nightmare in multiplayer.

I don't remember the name but it gives you 2 red mana and 1 for each of it in your graveyard so if you play 4 of these and your opponent tome scoured your anger into the graveyard you could play this and curse of bloodletting for a first turn win.

He kills Progenitus while having a mono color with splice-ability and a realitively cheap mana cost of 5, yet only has a rating of ~3.7?! Idk what's wrong with people, but when I first started, a card like this would ruin the game. Remember when Keldon warlord was good?
Also, quietus spike + fling?

@nessy_ydissac: it's a nice card and everything, but problably nothing to be really scared of. There are much more firghtening things in its color in both 1 vs. 1 and multiplayer.

Anyway, I want to copy it with Riku and see if i can make them both hit at the same time. Probably not, but...

With this I prefer Soul's Fire over Fling. For just 1 more you have the Malignus doing the damage so it can't be prevented. The fact you don't lose your creature is icing on the cake.

Good against an opponent's Gisela, Blade of Goldnight as it ignores her damage prevention.

The deck is black and red.

The combo is Malignus and essence harvest or rush of blood .

It will rock standard to the core!

@Everyone saying he can kill Progenitus: Progenitus is immune to damage. It's part of his protection ability. It's not that it "prevents" damage, it's that he cannot actually take damage by any means.
scydarkhope
★★★★★ (5.0/5.0) (8 votes)
@ EmptyPockets
Malignus can destroy Progenitus because although damage is prevented from his protection, the fact that damage CAN'T be prevetned from Malignus overrules

101.2. When a rule or effect allows or directs something to happen, and another effect states that it can’t
happen, the “can’t” effect takes precedence.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Heartless Summoning with this! For 3cmc I'm going to summon a creature whose power and toughness are equal to half your life -1. I'd pay 3 that.
Sven_Untgaarde

Tragically, it gets weaker as you get closer to winning, but STILL, in limited, a 5 cost 10/10 that can't be prevented is NOT going to be your opponents favourite friend

★☆☆☆☆ (1.0/5.0) (1 vote)
I don't think you could use fling AND Reverberate there Glech. See, fling has to resolve and even if you reverberate the fling, and sac malignus with the reverberated fling, it comes off the stack and malignus is dead, leaving the first fling with no sacrificial target so it just fizzles.
Totema
★★★★★ (5.0/5.0) (4 votes)
@Purplesuits: Actually, it does work. Sacrificing the creature is an additional cost to Fling. But Reverberate let's you copy a spell without paying any costs, additional or otherwise. You would be right if the wording simply stated, "Sacrifice a creature."

This guy is a terror in EDH. You only need to face a 20 dmg Fling ONCE to understand how ugly this guy can get.
lanceofzolong
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.5/5.0) (1 vote)
OMG people fling deals damage its self, the creature does not do damage i.e. the damage CAN be prevented because maligus itself is not in fact doing the damage, fling is. This is the same reason infect decks don't use fling because fling does not have infect. Duh.

Mage Slayer seems like a pretty good idea to me.
LordRandomness
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Looks like he'd go well in red control, with a cost that's probably splash manageable in two or even three colours at a stretch. Unfortunately not particularly useful in more aggressive builds simply because by the time you hit 5 (IF you hit 5) your opponent should not be on enough life to make him worth it. Obviously horribly degenerate in EDH, I'm just thankful he's not legendary.

the art REALLY makes him look like a creation of the izzet. this is how melek should have looked in my opinion.
mjameson: no, cuz then malignus would be weaker.

Problem with this guy is he can never kill an opponent with combat damage unless they're on 1 life...
Furnace of Rath and Fling copy etc all work just dandy though.
