Cheap, efficient monoblack removal that can nail black creatures. I Love it. Often better than doom blade in standard, almost always in extended and legacy.

Bit cheap for black removal that can hit black creatures. At least it doesn't totally make terror completely obsolete.

In most cases Doom Blade 5-8.
Better vs other Black Decks worse vs. Artifact heavy Decks (Tempered Steel.dec etc.)

Doomblade is about to disappear from a lot of sideboards and maindecks.

Well, "nonartifact" might be a weakness in Mirrodin, but I'd still rather have this than Doom Blade in almost all of the matchups I'm likely to be in. Guess it depends on the metagame where you play.

over rated to be honest but still amazing card but it's on par with doom blade fact is artifact decks have always been popular in every format (except standard but right now standard is artifact heavy)

I do find it kinda funny how at the prerelease, for the most part the only people playing black decks will be the Phyrexian players...who won't get this card.

Why am I more excited about this card than any of the others?? haha 5/5 waaaay good! I'm just glad I'm playing Magic during this cards release because this card is going to be the next PtE or StP. It's abbreviation will be GftT. . . Not as glamorous as the others, but friggin awesome!!

A little overrated I'd say. Liquimetal Coating makes this card dead weight on top of many top creatures being artifacts.

Not bad by any means, but overrated at 4.8. Should be roughly equal to Doom Blade.

Although they Ripped off a WoW Hunter pet ability, whats not to like? a few of these and a few doomblades and you can deal with just about anything that isn't indestructible.

They took Terror and chopped it in half, no you can run 12.

Sudden Death is still my favorite removal in the game though.

Terror is survived by black creatures and artifacts.
Doom Blade is survived by black creatures and regenerators.
Go for the Throat is survived by artifacts and regenerators.

The cycle is complete.

Between black creatures, artifacts and regenerators, black creatures are the most common, so this is definitely the best of the three. That said, I will never want to put four of these in a deck unless I have at least two Doom Blades. I'll play this over Doom Blade, but I'll still split when I can. I'm thinking 1/0, 1/1, 2/1, 3/1, 3/2, 4/2, 4/3, 4/4 for my progression of Go for the Throat/Doom Blade from 1 to 8 copies. Grasp of Darkness probably would go in there too if the deck is black enough, of course.

It's like someone said...

Man 1 "Hmmm... Is it just me, or is terror not that good?"

Man 2 "Yeah, you're right. What if we took away the "artifact" bit?" We could call it doom blade!"

Man 1 "That's a good idea! Lets do it!"

Man 2 "What about the other half? The non-black part?"

Man 1 "Nah, if we took that away, it'd be way to good."

Man 2 leaps at him and tears out his esophagus.

"I think I'll call it... Go for the throat."

Shoot, DacenOctavio points out that Mycosynth Lattice makes Emrakul, the Aeons Torn an illegal target. Fortunately, there are still ways to cast this spell on him, but they're clunkier. This will become a new mission of mine, not necessarily because it's the best most practical way to take him out, but because, well… you just ripped the throat out of a freaking god with your teeth.

Fools, only the most powerful magic can destroy Emrakul. That or Ersatz Gnomes.

Though it is very likely that Emrakul will be an illegal target as the spell is being cast, rather than when the spell resolves. So you may have to work around it by targeting an Inktreader Nephilim, and then making GTFO colorless. (this ofcourse turns GTFO into a 2 cmc Damnation)

Okay... When I first saw this I thought that it was for-all-effects-and-purposes strictly better than Doom Blade. And, at least in a lot of causal circles, it is. More people run black than run artifacts, so go nuts. But I also feel like I should caution those who are eating this up all too eagerly. It simply isn't strictly better than Doom Blade in constructed. In fact, catching your opponent off guard by running Doom Blade instead is probably a better plan. Wurmcoil Engine is being run more heavily because of this card. Punish the decks that are playing around this removal spell with unpredictability.

Please Wizards, give your spells intelligent sounding names. Already some good recommendations here. Gouge, Murder, Murderous Gouge, Fatal Laceration, anything other than "Go for the Throat." Might as well have named Assault Strobe "Swing Twice So Fast it Happens at Once." If you can't think of good names have a poll and ask your loyal fans for goodness sake. Hire the guy who recommended "Murder" - imagine seeing a card named Murder...

@ChumleyX Yes.

I have a serious problem with this card. It warps the color pie. I'm not saying that Black doesn't destroy creatures, I'm saying that black creatures don't get spot removed. Look at Abyssal Persecutor, for example. Even he was a massive beatstick with THE drawback (didn't stop him from being really good). Black creatures have alway been designed to be MASSIVELY overcosted because of things like Terror and Doom Blade. Now what?

Not very good in Standard as of now, but this card seems better then Doom Blade in most other scenarios...you see black creatures way more then artifact creatures most of the time.
Also, you could always sideboard this or Doomblade. What's that? Running an artifact deck? Lemme swap these puppies for something else, etc.

Erik's Random card 6/21/2011
This was in the design file, priced at 2B.

I thought it would make Standard more fun at 1B. This block has a lot of artifact creatures. However they were at a competitive disadvantage compared with Black creatures because of Doom Blade. Pricing this card at 1B put it on par with Doom Blade, and helped put artifact creatures on par with black creatures.

Asmodi0000

This SHOULD have cost 2B, and perhaps gave you 3 life to help make it more comparable to doom blade. The way it is now, it's superior to doom blade, which was already an excellent card, and pushes artifact creatures even further up a slope that I don't think they should be ascending.

Of course, I'm part of a minority, since it seems that most people are rather pleased with artifact creatures being so widespread and useable.

I don't know, I guess I just never liked robot-ish creatures.

Black creatures are just not powerful enough for this to be good in an artifact block. It often sits in my hand not unlike Terror. However, in standard, it gets a little better, nuking Vampire Nighthawk, Grave Titan, and uh. . . What else is black and really needs to die? Phyrexian Obliterator? Pff, no one plays that. Just run Dismember, guys.

I have to say that that is some pretty uninspiring card-naming there.
It doesn't even sound like a spell. It sounds like a command you would give a minion.
In fact, I wish they had printed this as an Archenemy card so the name would have already been taken by now.

Destroy2777

Of 6344 creatures, without consideration of abilities, only 439 creatures are immune to this. It one shots (again, abilities ignored) 5905 creatures, or 93.0801% of all creatures in the game... for two mana! Due to regen, hexproof/shroud, protection from colors, and indestructibility, that number would probably be lowered to about 80-85 percent, but it's power for destruction is undeniable.

5/5 simply because it is involved with a funny comic-store anecdote.
My friends were sitting down for some Tournament-style fun, when a large, intimidating man in his twenties sits down across from us and challenges us to a match.
He ran four of these, and every time he'd play one, he'd just slap the target creature with the card and say "go fir da troat."
Many lulz were had.

While this flavor does suggest slitting ones throat, its a magic that snuffs out the signature of life. Artifacts do not have that biological signature, so it makes sense. As for killing a non artifact lifeless wall, well that is a breach in flavor but oh well.

@RedCravat: The "casting" function isn't necessarily actual casting. Do you conjure a Goblin Grenade or do you instruct your mooks to fasten explosives onto Mr. Goblin Arsonist? Does one summon or innitiate a Quest for Pure Flame?
Shiny_Espeon
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.5/5.0) (1 vote)
Not going to lie, I prefer Doom Blade over this. Not because "OMG Go for the Throat is too good," but that I feel that it is better in many decks and formats then this. First, I never play mono black, (Because it is a bad deck IMO) so I have other colors to deal with black creatures. Second, most of the cards I need to use early spot removal on aren't black since black creatures are traditionally higher curved, in which I can find an alternate way to kill them, or have some way of getting value from death that makes them resilient to removal. Artifact creatures like Steel Overseer, on the other hand, are threats that I must immediately deal with, which means that I really need my spot removal to work.

IDK, so many people just seem to think that this card is automatically better then Doom Blade when it is highly situational. If you find that Black creatures are more worthy of your spot removal then Artifacts, then I guess this is better. I find that the opposite is true, so I run Doom Blade over this. Granted, I only have 1 doom blade in my deck since I made it singleton and I only have room for one, so if I needed a second I would likely run this.
