My friend Dave Guskin says that the name of this card is pronounced: "auto-kuh-thon wurm".

The first thought I had when I saw this card was 'really? 15 cmc? Epic!". The cost is outrageous, but convoke and mana acceleration can get this guy into play in no time at all. That said you could actually summon him with Dramatic Entrance for five; now if thats not the definition of epic, then I don't now what is.

You know what would be cruel. On the fifth turn play a Dramatic Entrance and play him.

In my opinion, white and green have the best synergy. White covers defense with cards like Chant of Vitu-Ghazi, and green covers attack with cards like Siege Wurm. (Notice I'm using cards from Selesnya)

As big and pretty as a guy like this is there's just too much creature removal out there to care about how fast you can get out a 15 cmc 9/14 when he can simply be death marked for a single B nice card in thoery but hardly playable as I see it

"It dies to removal" is such a terrible argument. Most things die to removal. That said, there are better things to cheat into play but this is a fun one to use.

There's nothing lamer than when someone just says 'removal' in these comments, but removal definitely needs to be mentioned here since he's a pain to play and he dies to everything. I'd take plated slagwurm over this in any situation.

Cards like these actually make me sad, because wizards assumes that because green can have a lot of mana that everything should cost a lot of mana. Even with mana accel and convoke.. the insanity it would take to get this creature into play just isn't worth it. There's always elvish piper and dramatic entrance, along with summoning trap, but this is far from the best creature you could choose to try to get with one of those abilities. To many of the selesnya cards are just weaker versions of other cards, in that they would be equivalent.. if they didn't cost so much to use. Also, convoking all the time means your not attacking, leaving you with the option of having a bunch of creatures but waiting longer or not playing your other creatures. Another example is guardian of vitu-ghazi, a surprisingly good creature as a 4/7 elemental with vigilance.. but at 8 mana, its kind of confounding why you would ever try to play it. Even back when it was first printed there were better cards, and now we have several much better cards like twilight shepherd. None of these cards has any form of anti removal either.. sure you can play your 9/14 wurm, but it can be doom bladed like anything else, giving your opponent card advantage between the card used to put it into play and the creature itself.

Why bring up the removal argument? The point of bringing up anti removal arugments is because of the mana cost vs investment. It doesn't matter so much if your 3 mana creature doesn't have anti removal, most creatures don't at that level, its a given. When your paying 7 mana and up, its generally considered wise to look for a creature with at least shroud or other forms of anti removal, because spending that much mana to have a creature simply die is a large drawback.

If you must play green, just use the new terra stomper, 8/8 is pretty close to 9/14 for general purposes since what you really want is the attack power, it's only 6 mana, and its uncounterable to boot.

Hey wizards, remember when you made this card at 15 mana? It was just a big body with trample and convoke and everyone was happy with it. It's not broken and format-defining, but it still saw plenty of play.

Now Emrakul has the same CMC, is colorless and has five more abilities. The only drawback is that it is a legend but honestly 9 times out of 10 your opponent will just scoop if it resolves, and if they don't you'll still win anyway. That's downright stupid WotC. He should cost, like 30. and have half as many abilities.

I got a turn 2 win thanks to this guy:
Turn 1: Swamp, Dark Ritual for an Entombed and Exhumed Volrath the Fallen.
Turn 2: another swamp and then attacked with Volrath discarding Autochton Wurm to make Volrath a 21/19 creature.
That was definitely my best starting hand ever but my opponent was a little annoyed...

I love how he was the go-to creature for size comparisons before the 9-year-olds designed the last Zendikar set (you know who I'm talking about). The thought of maybe getting him for super cheap or even free is a fun idea.

BUT, if your deck can consistently get out 15 or so creatures, don't be dumb. Just run Overrun instead and end the game. This is a pretty good example of a "win-more" card.

OK, it costs too much.
OK, it's not protected against removal.
OK, it's not the biggest nor the most powerful creature in Magic.
But...
- it's a WURM, one of the most iconic creature types since the beginning;
- it's 9/14, and I wonder which R&D member was born on that day;
- it costs 10GreenGreenGreenWhiteWhite, and real timmies like a high number followed by many simbols in the upper right corner of the cards, just because they feel more powerful;
- it's so big that it takes one day to walk from its head to its tail;
- it can survive a METEOR IMPACT (thanks RobinHood3000 for posting);
- it's crashing a city tower like it were crashing a twig...
To me it's not the most beautiful wurm, nor the most powerful, but it is sure one of the best ones!

Not really a good card, but lovable!

The timing of paying for spells allows you to tap Eldrazi Spawn to convoke the Wurm before sacrificing them to pay its reduced cost! Therefore:

+ Nest Invader = 8GreenGreenWhiteWhite (total of 9GreenGreenGreenWhiteWhite = 14)
+ Kozilek's Predator = 6GreenGreenWhiteWhite (total of 9GreenGreenGreenWhiteWhite = 14)
+ Nest Invader & Kozilek's Predator = 4GreenWhiteWhite (total of 8GreenGreenGreenWhiteWhite = 13)

OR

+ Skittering Invasion = GreenGreenGreenWhiteWhite (total of 7GreenGreenGreenWhiteWhite = 12)

Alternately, just use it as a fattie alongside your token swarm (I hear it would also power a rather large Overwhelming Stampede). I hear that Conqueror's Pledge, Nomads' Assembly, and Increasing Devotion can make quite a few.

+ Increasing Devotion = 7GreenGreenGreen (total of 10GreenGreenGreenWhiteWhite = 15)
+ Flashback = 2GreenGreenGreen (total of 9GreenGreenGreenWhiteWhite = 14)
+ Increasing Devotion & Flashback = GreenGreenGreen (total of 10GreenGreenGreenWhiteWhiteWhiteWhite = 17)
+ Conqueror's Pledge = 6GreenGreenGreen (total of 8GreenGreenGreenWhiteWhiteWhite = 14)
+ Kicked Conqueror's Pledge = GreenGreenGreen (total of 8GreenGreenGreenWhiteWhiteWhite = 14)
+ Nomads' Assembly = doubles the number of creatures you have for convoke, then doubles again
+ Nomads' Assembly & 3 creatures = from apprx. 9GreenGreenWhite to apprx. 7GreenWhite (total of apprx. 11GreenWhiteWhiteWhite = 15)
+ Nomads' Assembly & 3 creatures & Rebound = from apprx. 9GreenGreenWhite to apprx. 1Green (total of apprx. 5GreenWhiteWhite = 8

No, Timmy is the personification of a certain kind of Magic the gathering player. Now, Timmy personifies the kind of player who uses brute force to win. He fights to the last breath and uses brute force and powerful creatures to beat his opponents. There is Johnny, who represents the power of comboing spells together to make powerful concoctions. He uses spells in combinations to produce a desired effect. Then there is Spike. He represents the power of using singularly or almost singularly instants and sorceries to win. He uses magics that wear down an opponent.

Now, each of these are pretty much the broadest definition for Magic player types, these are not concise, but these are what the slang terms are. Now do you understand? Also, I would like to point out that this card hardly sucks. It doesn't at all, really. If it didn't have Convoke I'd be inclined to agree with you, but since it can be summoned by say tapping some creatures and using some mana, it's actually relatively good muscle.

@attemu1234
Your correct about Johnny and Timmy, but Spike is the "tourney player". Spike uses only the best and most efficient cards, no matter the costs to his wallet. He only cares about his win loss record. Wizards tend to ignore spike when designing cards, because spike will just look up his decks online and use the best cards in the format. They don't have to try to appeal to spike like they do with Timmy and Johnny. We all have a little spike in us. Spike plays to win, and that's what everyone is trying to do in the end.

But there is also Vorthos alongside Spike, Johnny, and Timmy. Vorthos loves flavor and will use weaker cards because they fit the flavor and theme of the deck better. I think there is a "Melvin" too but I forgot what that kids all about!

"Autochthon" comes from a Greek word meaning roughly that grew in its current place. This thing is so massive that it's essentially immobile.

@TheWrathOfShane: Melvin is the mechanics junkie. He plays cards that don't have to work thematically at all, but mechanically are beautiful together. Vorthos is the opposite of him. And they both are on a different axis from the Timmy-Johnny-Spike plane.

Here's how to get this guy out turn 3 WITHOUT cheating it into play, and without moxes or black lotus or stuff like that.

Turn 1
Forest, Magus of the Vineyard

Turn 2
Forest, magus ability adds GG to mana pool, Wall of Roots, another Wall of Roots, use the abilities of both walls to add GG to your mana pool, another Wall of Roots, and use the ability of THAT wall to cast another Magus of the Vineyard.

Turn 3
Forest, magus abilities add GGGG to mana pool, tap all three lands for GGG, use the abilities of all three walls for GGG, tap all five creatures with convoke, and there you have your 9/14 trampling wurm!

Of course, this is totally impractical, but it's still funny that you can do this.
