x4 Maindeck if you lack first turn spells. Sideboard them out after game 1, and you'll know exactly what to put in and remove.

A decent card, but you are trading one card for another card. You're not gaining card advantage this way. Even Extirpate is potentially better, as you can remove all copies of the target card.

Blue only has Counterbore currently that removes more than one copy.

ClowWizardEriol: "Potentially" being the key word. Extirpate is a worthless first turn play, Extract isn't (in any game but the first.) Blue needs that mana open later in the game to be reactionary.

Dears, now listen, if we're going to use this card to the fullest why not combine it withArchive Trap? I mean, it isn't too terrible to combine with Extirpate either, and while we're on the topic of Archive Trap why not Bloodchief Ascension to the win, no?

Kweane, you're searching the opponent's library for them, so I don't believe it triggers Archive Trap.

@Kweane

this does not work with archive trap, unless you are talking about just for milling

you are searching someone elses library with extract, the wording on archive trap reads:
"If an opponent searched his or her library this turn"

meaning they have to search their own library, not have someone do it for them

Great thing about this card is that when you cast it you don't have to name a specific card, so you can thumb through your opponent's deck to see what he has and remove what you don't like.

I use this card with my Grindstone and Painter's Servant combo for Legacy tournaments. If my opponent sideboards in Gaea's Blessing or one of the Eldrazi titans to fizzle my combo I just take the card out and combo off. So good!!!

getting to see what is in your opponent's deck tends to be far more useful than taking one card out most of the time.

What's this? You had a single Emrakul you were hoping to cheat out?

Not today.

@ClownWizardEriol There's also Denying Wind... though it's prohibitively expensive to play

seriously, someone looks at this card and says, your only trading one card for one card its not that great, its trading one card, and one mana, for one card, any card in their deck, and knowledge of their entire deck. that is worth an incredible amount for just one mana

Rip that stupid singleton Sword of ~~ out of your opponent's caw-blade deck and watch them cry ;)

Cards like this are the reason having a single Emrakul in your deck won't save you from the mill.

Now that we have cards like Misthollow Griffin, Extract will gradually gain value as a tutor as more cards are made that can be cast from exile. It will take several years, but it probably will happen.

It seems some cards were intentionally designed to be extremely annoying. It's bad enough having to allow your opponent to paw through your deck and see everything you have, spoiling all the surprises, but having to worry about it happening on the very first turn is just ridiculous.

If someone pulls out an "Extract" on me, then in response, as a fast effect, I'm hurling their deck across the room.

Does this see play in vintage? Exile their black lotus! Lol.

DrJack, you sound like an immature @sshole and I doubt anyone would want to play just a card game with you anyway.

This should be a black card.
Very useful in the right situation, regardless.

Uh, yeah. Nice card. Very vintage and legacy playable.
I think dr jack has stumbled onto one of the best ways to find himself tits-up on the floor of his LGS tho...

Annoying cards like this wouldn't exist if all those other annoying cards didn't exist.

Why do people not use this as tech against ANT? Take their tendrils, win the game. Also, I could see it in vintage, take their Time Vault fastbond tinker or Yawgmoth's Will. Seriously, 2 in your opening hand would be game if they don't counter.
