Viridian Longbow is laughing right now.

Shuriken is laughing harder.

All of Worldwake is splitting at the sides.

5 mana for one damage? I'm sorry, we're not that desperate for damage, people. And it's uncommon; a total waste of an uncommon slot. Really, Wizards?

Repeatable artifact drops for Glassdust Hulk or Glaze Fiend? Works with Sludge Strider kinda. Still way too expensive... You'd have to run a bunch of Etherium Sculptors to get it to a usable cost.

You'd think with the cost and the artwork that it would ping for at least 3 damage...

My current nominee for the worst card in Worldwake... I almost died when I saw this. Honestly, what?? It would be one thing if it un-equipped after use, but to actually bounce back to your hand for one damage is insane.

You guys are all bad! Wizards just tying to make us realise the there could be worst cards from Mindless Null! Whitch would be uncommon too!
See what happens when you are complaining for Very bad commons? They turn into ever worst uncommons.
Rise of the Eldrazi will surely have an even worst rare for sure... Something like

"Mindless Boomerang 5Black
Aftifact Creature - Zombie RARE
This creature can't attack or block unless you control a Mindless Null and a Razor Boomerang.
At the beginning of your upkeep, return this creature from the battlefield it's owner hand.
Whenever this creature deals 1 or more damage, return it to it's owner hand.

This has to be some of the coolest flavor ive ever seen on a magic card.

for that it gets a 2

And then i Deduct 1.5 for being god awful. I cannot think of anytime when I would want to use this in the present day standard...or extended...hell for vintage and legacy even.

But why? WHY WHY WHY!?!?!? The art is sooo good...the Mechanic is soooo good...but that mana cost/low attack...*facepalm*

I think Bonesaw was more useful...bot belong on a chimney imp, cuz at least they come into play untapped and without summonin sickness!

this is a first for me. I have never voted a card below 1 before. too bad I can't figure out how to register a vote of 0. Would have been weak at common, but I guess the other colors needed some sort of comparable effect to cunning sparkmage at uncommon. Oh, did I say comparable, I meant miserably worse than, to the point of disgrace.

Here's a suggestion for WWK drafts. Instead of the land challenge, try the razor boomerang challenge! Draft every razor boomerang you see (don't worry, they will be passed to you) and put them all in your deck, then go 4-0!

Yes, this card is bad. I see it get torn apart everywhere...

Only if there was a way to get infite mana (or at least 160) in standard, where at least 1 of 8 is blue, you could combine it with Filligree Sages to to repeat and repeat 1 damage for five mana and tap/untapping your sages, and eventually deal 20 (or more, if needed) damage... It would be awesome to totally obliterate someone with it. ^^

If there was such a card, I immediately started to create a Boomerang deck. =D

There are many older cards which read as hideously inefficient today, but were somewhat forgivable at a time when WotC didn't know the game as well as it does today, or were experimenting with a new mechanic. I can at least understand where they were coming from in most cases.

What the hell is Razor Boomerang's excuse?

For a card from (at this writing) the newest set, this is inexplicable. It's so obviously horrid it doesn't even have the excuse of being a skill-tester. If it didn't return to your hand, it still wouldn't see constructed play and would be at most a mid-pack pick in draft; as printed, it's a complete waste of cardboard.
aquaguy88
★★☆☆☆ (2.8/5.0) (2 votes)
I don't understand why this card was made to be an uncommon but I do have one question. Are they creating some creature that could potentially have the ability of when it deal damage to a player that you can put and equipment card back onto the battlefield, even maybe being equipped to that creature? It would make equip aggro decks a little bit more fun if so much mana wasn't spent on playing and equipping. But for now until i see a creature like that come out, Congrats on making one of the worst uncommons in the history of magic.

@ Sironos and everyone:
I have found an unlimited damage combo with razor boomerang, which is really sad because I'm not a Johnny almost at all but I have one, AHEM.

I have 3 Etherium Sculptors 2 Auriok Steelshapers and a Battered Golem on the field I play razor boomerang for 0 (making Battered Golem untap if he is tapped) equip for 0 and use razor boomerang repeat for unlimited damage.

I hope everyone is happy now the world is at peace once more.

oh yes and this card is terrible, but the above combo isn't impossible to pull off mostly cause all the cards cost 2 (or one) and Battered Golem is probably free.

yes I know you're happy now

@ Sironos

OK, so check it out: you're sitting there with your Razor Boomerang and your Shelkin Brownie, right? OK, so the deal is this: attach the Boomerang to the Brownie and then tap for one to the Brownie. BAM! Two horrible cards which used to be uglifying the crud out of your table are now off the battlefield. The next time a card goes into your graveyard, it will cover the Brownie and hide the shame.

If you're playing for ante perhaps you can Darkpact this off of the top of your library. You'll get the best card in the pot for all of 2 seconds before your opponent leaps across the table and strangles you to death.

This card is so bad. The worst part about it is that it's uncommon, so instead of using up some garbage common slot in your booster packs it could have cost you a Cunning Sparkmage.

On the positive side, your dog probably wouldn't mind the taste very much if you threw it in with his kibble.

Not a combo with Zephyr Spirit and Cyclopean Snare.

Ok everyone, think hard!

We need useful, efficient combos that don't require Auriok Steelshaper, Leonin Shikari, other discount effects, or swapping/Bazaar Trader effects. I personally think that whatever cool combo that could've been was turned off by the 2 mana equip cost. Perhaps this was supposed to be some silly combo in standard. Maybe.

...

I'm stumped.

I keep thinking about this card and wonder why it would be allowed into the game. And the only thing I can think of it is either an misprint or a misunderstanding of the rule on the card.

It says to return to the owner's hand. My question is who is the owner? I own all of my cards. But what if I am playing my friend's deck does it go into him hand since he owns the card?

I am the Player, so the target should resolve to the owner. So if a creature equiped with an equipment the owner of the equipment until it is equiped to another creature? This would make more sense than creating a card that cost you 5 Mana to cause 1 damage.

I think the real way this is meant to be played is not to return to player's hand but instead to reattach it to the creature weilding it hence the difference between the owner and the player.

This would make this card a really good card to have in a wennie deck or any non-red deck giving the playing field a balance to the tap for direct damage.

What do you all think?

I can strike for 20 damages... or, if the trick doesn’t work (example: A couple of Chimney Imp dies blocked), Chimey Imp will mystify my opponent since it's actually the only combo-card that affect them, while Tolarian Serpent can help me to die myself more rapidly, milling my entire miserable deck into my miserable graveyard.

The comparison to Rod of Ruin, Viridian Longbow, or Searing Touch is pretty direct. I'm happy to play those cards in Limited, though. I like underpowered little effects like this--much better gameplay than "Baneslayer. Doomblade."

The only insulting thing is how hard they neutered this-- The artifact deals the damage, so no lifelink or deathtouch interactions... but the ability is the creature's, so it still doesn't get around protection. The unattach is part of the cost, so no Horseshoe Crab shenanigans.

At least the bounce part waits until resolution. With Leonin Shikari and Auriok Steelshaper, all of your creatures can be Anaba Shaman!

Also triggers Glassdust Hulk and Myrsmith.

I honestly just think it's a joke card. Wizards has to sit around and make hundreds and hundreds of new cards every year. It's pretty difficult to think of that many good ideas all the time. It's not surprising to think that at the end of a long workday one of them was just like, "Well, what if we made the worst card in the world and actually printed it?" The entire team had a blast making this card, I have no doubt. I still giggle everytime I read through it. The fact that this abomination is an uncommon just seals the deal for me. The infinite damage combo doesn't require 7 cards. It requires 6, and one can be any artifact.

Etherium Sculptor/Helm of Awakening/Cloud Key, Semblance Anvil (imprint any artifact), Battered Golem, Puresteel Paladin, and Razor Boomerang. Using Helm or Cloud Key, it's monowhite, so no chance of getting colorscrewed either. PP also allows you draw as many cards as you want (not that you need them, but it can help you draw into combo).

Infinite Elves and Infinite Myrs also work.

The artwork is an allegory:
The donkey that gets attacked is a player who gets punished for being dumb enough to use this card.
The boomerang stands for his reasoning whose flaws he tries to repress but which will eventually return.
Which means, the donkey himself was the one who threw the boomerang.

I conclude: the card is for new players to make them understand (the hard way) what cards not to put in a deck :P

The only possible justification I can think of for even considering printing something like this is a very, very intense need of a flavor-injection. And they even failed at that, since nobody would play this, and, hence, no added flavor.

@Icefang13: Add in Puresteel Paladin to draw your entire deck as you combo out

Also, this might be somewhat entertaining if it let the creature deal the damage, as you could use deathtouch and combat shenanigans, but it would still be pretty pathetic. I think the whole point of it returning it was to be able to re-equip it a couple times (like Cyclopean Snare), but unlike the snare, you could just re-equip it without it bouncing, but I guess it's more obvious now

There seem to be a lot of not-entirely-unreasonable ways to get this to the state of ridiculous (in a 'too good' sort of way). That's not to say it's great on its own, but it seems representative of how nuts some artifacts (and artifact support) have been getting lately. o_o

There are honestly worse cards than this, and I don't think it should be the lowest rated. With the right combo, it can win games; that's way better than cards like Fasting or Sorrow's Path can claim. The win condition is very niche, and there are better cards to make use of Galvanizer (I myself prefer Myr Propogator), but even so, this card does have a legitimate use in a deck, even if it's a casual myr tribal deck, and that's worth something, imo.
NinjaShadow
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
2 myr galvanizer and a palladium myr with most infinite mana combo cards = instant win, "this" isn't the one i'd pick.

Only thing cool about this card is the art... 1/5. That IS a horse, right guys? BUT horses don't have fingers, so there's that... back to 0.5/5

A common theme among the most hated cards in MTG history is the "return to its owner's hand" mechanic. See also Cyclopean Snare, Rakalite, Saprazzan Raiders, Windscouter, and Zephyr Spirit.

Somewhere in the depths of the FFL, I can only imagine, lies the secret to how to break this return-to-hand mechanic wide open, thus explaining the exorbitant pricing of cards such as this. And until someone figures that secret out, we're apparently going to get cards like this every few years that mystify everyone as to why they exist.

Why not this?
Puresteel Paladin with metalcraft to make it cost 0 to equip.
3 Etherium Sculptors to make it cost 0 to play.
Battered Golem which gets a free untap when this comes in.
Damage your opponent infinitely, refill your hand as much as you wish, and...
Profit!

And yes, I know that there are better combinations that cost less mana to kill your opponent faster, but are THOSE combinations using the lowest rated card IN THE GAME to do it? I think not.

there are to many flaws in this card.
1. its mana cost is too high for the multiple draw backs( equip cost, deals only 1 damage , and comes back to hand).

2. it should had been 2 - 3 damage done to target creature, that would had been at least a good draft card but instead it pings either a player or creature for 5 mana.

3. it all ready has 5 mana to the cost why would we have to tap our creature, that is a little too much.

If it was just 3, and came with the tap by itself (instead of...having to attach it to a creature for some reason), I could see it being used casually...or better, just have it as 2 mana and only have it hit creatures.

Who thought having it be 5 and tapping a creature to do 1 damage to a player or creature was a good idea? Red has better burn options and can outpace the damage of this handily (RedRedRedRed, throw out 12 damage in lightning bolts), Green laughs if you try to burn its creatures (and has few burnable ones anyway), White usually has the defense to not care either way, Blue wouldn't even bother countering it (and laugh as you try to use it on him), and Black would just kill off your creatures and smile at how useless it was.

There is not a single color this card works against, or works FOR. I think that's the epitome of a useless card.

Puresteel Paladin + 3x Etherium Sculptor + Illusionist's Bracers + Tidewater Minion = I DID IT! I INFINITE DAMAGED SOMEONE WITH RAZOR BOOMERANG! I WON!

(basically, you play the boomerang, equip it to the paladin, fire the boomerang for 1, tap tidewater minion (who is equippd with illusionist's bracers) targeting himself and puresteel paladin so they're both untapped, then repeat the combo)

Nah but seriously, all this proves is that you can come up with a combo for anything if you try hard enough. Worst colorless card ever? Worst colorless card ever.

@ScissorsLizard: 0.781 is a lot more than an eighth of a star. An eighth of a star would be 0.125.

Mathematical idiocy aside, this is undoubtedly up there with the worst cards in the game, if not THE worst. Maybe they made it uncommon so they wouldn't have to waste as many cards by printing it at common.

In regards to the mention of unlimited damage....it would work!!! Throw some Tinker, Sol Ring, Index (and similar cards), and Spy Network. Prototype Portal along with index will help you get multiple etherium sculptors on the battlefield. I know running 4x Tinker would be ideal, won't work in tournaments because of legalities...But if the deck is run tournament legal card numbers (Tinker) then cards like knowledge pool and Twin cast would help you get multiple Tinker's to get out your etherium Sculptor; as having 3 or more of one single permanent on the battlefieldisn'y likely without luck. You don't need to strictly target puresteel Paladin with Razor, any creature would do so put mostly artifact creatures in the deck to increase your artifact count so you meet the three artifacts you need to drop the equip cost.

11/1 update to my comment; has anyone tried this combo "
Puresteel Paladin + 3x Etherium Sculptor + Illusionist's Bracers + Tidewater Minion = I DID IT! I INFINITE DAMAGED SOMEONE WITH RAZOR BOOMERANG! I WON!" I have indeed built this deck, I have the secret to this combo, it is not easy to build; yet it will yield great benefits. It's not as easy as throwing those few cards together. I can however sell the secret if you have an lawyer

Hey people, we are failing here, this is rated lower than defensive stance. This can kill something even if conditionally. Defensive stance is an aura that deals no damage, gives a creature no power boost and goes to the graveyard when the creature dies. Why is defensive stance rated higher? I am going to wager it's because people like the art...

then again you can disable a 1/1 infect creature with defensive stance...

Fun story from the Bad Card Cube.

One guy had Reclusive Wight out as the largest creature in play. It was doing its thing until a Llanowar Vanguard hit the opposing side. Things were looking grim for the Wight, but salvation was on its way in the shape of a Razor Boomerang. The Wight picked up the Boomerang and, at the end of the opponent's turn, threw it with such might at the Vanguard, that it turned the Vanguard sideways. The Boomerang landed safely in the player's hand, much to the Wight's delight. The Wight was free to continue its attacks unopposed.
