Dose this card truly bring a total end to the turn, or dose that player go through all the motions of ending his turn but still has the remaining phaisis of his turn to use. for example if my opponent drew up to 12 card and gave his creatures +5+5 during his main phase, and then I played Time Stop. Would he then be abel to continue onto his combat phase? Or is my opponent just done?

@Rezelin: According to Oracle rulings for Time Stop, the affected player's turn is finished. That player cannot go through the rest of his/her turn.

★★★★☆ (4.7/5.0) (11 votes)
This card can actually counter uncounterable spells. Wait for them to tap out for a big banefire, play this on top and the spell gets removed from the game before it can resolve.

At Rezelin: The person you're using it on still does get a cleanup step (check on the rulings). This means that creatures get damage pulled off of them, they discard down to seven (or whatever their maximum hand size is), and all turn duration effects wear off.

@3UU this would be RIDICULOUS. I think its cost is very good.

Great card. You need green mana-production to make this playable. Heartbeat of Spring, Magus of the Candelabra, a couple of the Simic bounce-lands and a Wild Growth or two, with all that in play, the king of counterspells is no harder to play then Mana Leak.
Great card.

Edit: This is also playable with the Urza's Saga 'free spells' (Time Spiral and the like) and lands that produce two or more mana (Tolarian Academy).

This card is costed exactly where it needs to be.
Any lower and it would be a 9/10 strictly better Time Walk, which is a scary thing to think about.

As is, even now its still a mostly better Time Walk, and a counterspell to end all counterspells.

6/5 for the sheer brilliance of the card.

edit, 7/5.
One of very few ways to deal with Emrakul, the Aeons Torn

I like this card, I mean, mindbreak trap is now another way to deal with uncounterable spells, but this is the only spell that will properly stop emrakul. Emrakul not only gets exiled, but the player also doesn't get their extra turn, and loses their current one. This is only important if you play EDH, but im glad I have it.

All of you are slightly inaccurate, just a little. Time Stop doesn't stop Emrakul,

TIME STOP STOPS EMRAKUL!!!!

I think about 4 people in my playgroup went to the Rise of Eldrazi prerelease (and got a copy of Emrkul). Our entire playgroup got infected with the EDH virus. TIME STOP IS THE card! You just don't merely say that it stops Emrakul, you have to scream it. If I had millions of dollars, I would develop monuments and churches devoted to Time Stop (ok, not really). I don't think you all are really feeling me (just kidding), but still I must tell a story:

You think Magic is just a game. But it goes beyond a game when you are with 8 people who began an EDH game at 10:30 PM, you look at your cell phone to realize that it is 1:45 AM, and there are 7 people still alive at atleast 32 life. That blasted game ended at 4 AM. I won, and rightfully so because I was the only player who showed up packin'. What was I packing? Removal. Unfortunately, I did not have enough in the deck. It was I who had to deal with a Putrefaction, a Tainted Aether, and Kuon twice (that was someone's general). Unfortunately, the second time Kuon was played I had to use my Time Stop- otherwise most of the other players would've resigned (that would've kind of sucked).

But yeah, Obliterate, a cycled Decree of Annihilation, Emrakul, a planeswalker's ultimate, a bad storm, and whatever else, Time Stop is the final source of hope (unless someone has a counter). I like this in regular play as well. Six mana is not too much to have one or even two in a deck.

P.S. In that EDH game, the black players died and it was down to three players including me. I actually won because it was at that time that I revealed the Thopter Foundry-Sword o.t. Meek combo. Yeah, I'm a bad person too, I know.

Just to clarify things: Even if you Time Stop Emrakul, the ability is "When Emrakul is cast" and not "When Emrakul comes into play" - So they still get their extra turn. A very, very expensive extra turn without the 15/15 giant beatstick of doom, but still an extra turn.
jamis30
★★★★☆ (4.5/5.0) (6 votes)
Andon, no they won't. Emrakul's extra turn ability is triggered, and as such, it uses the stack. If you Time Stop in response to the trigger, it and Emrakul will be exiled and thus not resolve.

Ok. Lets look at this. 6 cost for a countering of ANY spell as well as skipping a combat phase(just what mono-blue control needs), and basically says "here yuh go, another turn. ALso, it has instant speed... unlikie the favored time warp... I dont get why you guys like that card... IDK... ANyways, this card is sideboard material, becuase it is reather expensive and can take up a slot in main-stream after you find out your Wall of Frost, Guard Gamazoa, and trusty sphinx are handling themselves just fine... 4.5/5

Hrmmm. When to play it....?
Do you gamble that your opponent will play something/attack you, or indeed wait until they do?
Or do you play it in their upkeep and deny them a draw?

I'm leaning toward the latter. If youre playing blue, you probably aren't trying to win via creatures so having his untapped wont really inconvience you.
However having untapped lands does mean hes open to counter you back.
Some interesting possibilities. Id be interesting in seeing some of the uses other than the "save my ass" ones.

it's versatile but not always denying a player's turn completely.

he can go through most of his turn without being denied of anything since he gets priority once draw phase happens. Then Time Stop can be used against him immediately after he passes priority in draw, or you can wait till pre-combat or combat phase. But the moment you decide that his summons are resolved in pre-combat, the only thing left to do is Time Stop in the next stack (i.e. in combat). Time Stop is either a Counterspell/Stifle in the draw/main or a Fog/Counterspell/Stifle in combat phase...if i got this down correctly lulz

I played a game with my friend that dread returned his darksteel into play. He also had a counter spell on an isochron. I conceded and he told me "just keep playing, maybe you can pull something off"

So I slapped this onto my panoptic mirror... He gave me quite a scowl. Great way to concede..

@phantom.lance:
Some of the most interesting options with this:
1) Cast it during your opponent's upkeep, as soon as he passes priority. In this case, you have essentially cast a more fair-costed version of Time Warp. Plus, by doing this during his upkeep, he doesn't get to draw a card.
2) Cast it in response to a spell or ability he cast. Looks like Mindbreak Trap a little, one that has the potential to force him to skip things he'd like to do next (subsequent non-instants, attack phase sometimes etc).
3) During combat. It's not just a Fog. Most good players tend to cast stuff during their second main phase. Which they won't have. 'Cause you say so. Especially useful against aggro players who thought they'd win right away by swinging for 56 damage. Some moments are priceless.
4) In response to Emrakul, the Aeons Torn's Time Warping ability. Yes, it's worth mentioning separately.

Back to the emrakul debate... If i am not mistaken, Emrakul is cast. He goes on the stack. His 'Take another turn' trigger goes on the stack. Then you play Time Stop. Doesn't Time Stop exile the 'take another turn' trigger as well as Emrakul?

This and Venser is what made my blue deck such a threat. It is powerful cards like these that stop the greatest of all threats in magic. One of the few spells that not only "counters" spells, but also gives you an extra turn if played during their upkeep. Can be worth a lot of card advantage with howling mines in play.

@Robram: Nice try with the reference, but that'd be more like if it said "Start this turn over." Which would be a rules nightmare and wouldn't really do anything, since they would probably just do the same thing over again.

Yes, it is expensive, but that doesn't matter. There is a ridiculously high amount of utility in this card.

It's an exile counterspell for everything, even things that can't be countered or can't be targeted, abilities, infinite combos, creatures attacking, or even effectively counter someone having a turn at all, etc. If only this thing had Split Second, it would be unstoppable.

There is no greater feeling in casual than holding one of these in your hand late in the game.

@TheWrathofShane: split second would have been redundant; it already exiles the stack the moment it hits the field (including itself), meaning it can't be responded to using an instant. after that, their turn is over.

Lash_of_Dragonbreath
★★★★☆ (4.2/5.0) (3 votes)
@Ignaeon: Wait, what? Of course you can answer this with an instant! It only ends the turn (exiling the stack) when it resolves, so while it is on the stack you can still counter it or cast any instant you want to.
JaxsonBateman
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Pretty versatile. In its simplest form, it's a more expensive Time Warp, though will also be cast when your opponent has full access to lands, allowing instant speed responses they may not have been able to afford on your turn. Getting more complex, you can allow them to draw their card and potentially have a land drop - then end the turn with a spell on the stack, thus allowing you to counter a spell and negate *some* of their turn. Heck, if they do something crazy at instant speed at the end of your turn, you can even use it as an expensive counter.

However, even though it's versatile, Time Warp is almost always going to be better. The reason getting an extra turn is good is because you get an extra card draw, land drop, combat phase and an extra use of activated abilities that are limited to once per turn. Time Stop can do this too, but for 1 more mana at a less opportune time. If you try and do one of the alternates with it, you're missing out on the other advantages over a straight-up Time Warp.

Its a Time Warp with a Mindbreak Trap stapled on.
You could also end the turn after they swing, leaving them tapped and defenseless. This might be a case when casting during your first mainphase was a better choice.

I've seen at least 4 comments about how this card should have the split second keyword. While I agree it would help THIS card to some extent, let me tell you why it would be horrible for the game.

You would have a card that counters everything, even uncounterable spells, even abilities, and nothing could be done in response to it AT ALL. And there are so many cards like Dream Hall that can circumvent the high casting cost of such a card and basically give you complete control of any situation.

The reason counterspells are healthy for the game is that they, like any other spell, are not invincible and can be defeated. An "ultimate counterspell" would make games boring and would devolve eternal formats into control decks that do nothing but cast endless free copies of Time Stop+. I love control, but anything that, by definition, has no answer will only be detrimental in the end.

This feels less powerful than a card that says "take another turn".
For instance, if you use it during their upkeep, they still get to untap.
If you use this to counter a single spell, they still got to draw, and maybe attack.

Yet this feels much more violating.

The power of this card is not in getting another turn, or in countering a single spell, but in destroying a moment. That is, waiting until someone has invested tons of resources into something, and stepping in at the last second to obliterate carefully laid plans.

This is a great example of a card that teaches players to let their effects resolve before starting the next one.

You can:
Cast it during your upkeep to effectively take an extra turn.
Cast it in response to a spell to counter that spell, even if it's uncounterable.
Cast it in response to an creature attacking to prevent the damage.
Cast it in response to an ability activating or triggering to counter that ability.
Cast it in response to your own "at the beginning of the next end step" to keep a temporary creature indefinitely.
Cast it in response to storm nonsense to eliminate the entire storm stack.
Cast it when nothing is going on, just to be classy.
