It's either hate rating or outright confusion.

This + Dredge + A varied deck = ~5/6 for two mana.

No, you are NOT meant to play it right away.

Yes, cheap power is all that it is.

Do you not realise just how good that is?

This set includes, in fair amount, all the types it counts.

This could, theoretically, be a 8/9 creature for two mana. Realistically about 5 - 6/ 6 -7.

Quick, cheap power. You attack with it, and then you probably win. There is nothing wrong with this card.

Even if you don't like the playing of this card (against you), at least appreciate how it actually revealed Planeswalker's; the reminder text included them before they were actually released.

However, I cant rate him less than 4/5 due to the power he emanates, I kinda wish I played green.

When this card was printed in Future Sight, I commented that Tarmogoyf would never be reprinted due to its degenerating power level, much like Jace, the Mind Sculptor.

Logically speaking, I was right, but I underestimated the popularity of Modern format that eventually made Wizards reprint Tarmogoyf. Sometimes profit has to be top priority, same reason why Jace wasn't banned till the end of the season before his set was rotated out. Countless people bought a whole box of Worldwake just to find a copy of Jace, imagine the surplus for Wizards.

Finally, we have a version of goyf with comprehensible artwork. The flavor text is great, although I miss the reminder text (very useful when showing the card to people unfamiliar with it).

Hate it all you want, but it is still one of the best creatures in the game and it is still going to win big events.

I recognize this is a damn good card, but it's really not my style. I see the suggestion of a Dredge deck, but if you're gonna do that, Why would you limit yourself to a 5-6 power creature? A dredge deck in my hands runs Boneyard worm and a lot of creatures. One time I got an 18/18 out for two mana. I'd rather the cheaper card that could be much more effective, but I can see WHY this thing is so bloody powerful. You don't run this in a deck that beats face early, after all, which is mostly what I'm about. I'll be leaving this card for the rest of you, leave me my Elusive Krasis and Tormented soul.

Not entirely. They should at least be more committed to green if they want that. This card is splashed into a ton of decks since it is so easy to play.

I see the potential and how easily this creature can be splashed with other colors, I really do-but I still think it's slightly overrated... the reason I say that is because he isn't evasive as all. Sure he can beat face and be a huge creature in the early game, but I can think of a shit ton of cards that can make him go away just as easily as he came. He is awesome, but for a hundred dollars and up? No thank you. I still give it 4/5 though.

I don't get it. There's not THAT many card types. By the time this actually has a decent body on it, it's usually late enough that you could cast something more powerful with evasion. And there is no protection against any of the usual ways to deal with a troublesome creature.
O0oze
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.5/5.0) (1 vote)
its nice, but come on, 130$? seriously? the largest it can possibly get is 7/8 with almost no chance of that, it has no evasion, it doesnt win you games by itself since your opponent just needs a large creature or a removal, and it barely combos. and yet, it costs almost as much as Jace, the mind sculptor right now.

not that its not good, its just not that good. i would always prefer primordial hydra.

Printing Modern Masters have two effects on price of Goyf:

1. There's more supply.

2. There's also more demand, because Modern Masters is going to popularize the format.

Ironically, there's so much anticipation of point #2 above that the price of Goyf stays at the same level (~$115), which might in turn make Modern not so popular a format again(due to high costs).

There's one simple solution on Wizard's part: print enough Modern Masters until the price of Goyf drops to about $50. I think this was the idea with the set to begin with, that is the reduce price of staples so the format becomes more accessible. Since Wizards can make a lot of money by printing more MM (in moderate amounts, say comparable to RtR), I don't see why not. The players and the format will benefit, while the investors will adjust anyways.

To be honest, I would rather play Flesh Reaver, Jötun Grunt or Keldon Marauders instead of Tarmogoyf (mostly because I like money). It's so boring to go to Modern or Legacy and see goyfs running around all day every day... The day someone sides in Tempting Wurm to replace goyfs in Legacy against a non-Show and Tell deck would be a happy day.

One of the best creatures ever printed, but doesn't belong in every deck running green.

Best when paired with black discard spells and/or blue cantrips so it can grow to a significant size in the early game.

In some G/W and Bant builds this is card is a poor choice, often being just a 0/1 on turn 2 and doesn't go beyond 1 or 2 power for a long time because White removal tends to exile instead of putting permanents in a graveyard.
Taudisban
★★☆☆☆ (2.8/5.0) (2 votes)
I can see this is already somewhat degenerating into certain inaccuracies, so let me clarify:

You don't play 'Goyf in dredge or selfmill. I mean, you could, but there a better reanimator targets for dredge and bigger creatures for selfmill.

'Goyf goes into any deck with fetchlands and instants or sorceries you might want to cast. It is not unusual for a Tarmogoyf to be a 3/4 on turn 2 and you can pretty much expect it to be consistently a 4/5 or 5/6 on the turns past that. Essentially, the 'Goyf is bigger than average early in the game and scales appropriately into the late game.

Broken mana cost, should have been 2GG like the original Lhurgoyf.
Sure it can't get that extremly big as a Lhurgoyf lategame in a multiplayer game but it gets quite big way faster. In a fitting deck it's usually a 5/6 for 2 mana. Totally overpowered! With that it made a lot of creatures obsolete in Legacy and the format a lot faster.

The card is absolutely unreal in modern. Turn one fetch into inquisition of kozilek or thoughtseize, discard any non-sorcery, and turn two you have a 3/4 on the board and it will only grow in the coming turns. The fastest beater for a mid range deck in modern.

This card is not overrated.. it's the biggest, cheapest creature in Magic. There are no replacements for it. What are you going to replace it with that's equally cheap and splashable and is the same size? The Jund replacements for it such as Putrid Leech in budget don't even come close. People splash green in decks that barely support green just to deal with other Tarmogoyfs in both modern and legacy.

"Show me a creature as big, as cheap, as splashable"

True, but he can still be countered, still be destroyed through other means, bounced easily, very vulnerable - nothing in addition to the P/T ... erm ... bonus.... (no trample, hexproof, etc)...

Don't get me wrong, 2 CMC (splashable 2 CMC) is amazing for something like this, whose P/T is so dynamic... I think, however, people look at the P/T potential, or rather the dynamic nature of the P/T, and the price tag of the card, and miss out/ overlook the many vulnerabilities that make it so you actually have to have some degree, however small or large, of care in when to use this creature. too much "ZOMG CHEAP POWER" and not enough "Wow, potential to be big, but has some serious vulnerabilities, gotta take care and use this when the time is right."

This is the beatstick to which all other beatsticks get compared to.
This is the one that your deck *Has* to have an answer for and *has* to be able to out pace.

I like having a couple Bojuka Bogs for things like Dredge; but hurting Goyf and KotR helps a bit as well.

I honestly feel the flavor text somewhat references formats. MM is intended to grow Modern; because it needs to compete with Legacy for them to keep it around.

I agree with Travelsonic, it may be good, but it's definately not 150 bucks good, that's not only insane, it's stupid.
For that price, it would need at least shroud or a super enter-the-battlefield ability. But it's a vanilla creature, it's not even black for immunity to doom blade or something like that.
150 is the price I'd expect for something like emrakul, a card that when enters the battlefield the opponent sometimes instantly scoops and sometimes just stops to look at the card because it looks cool and has cool abilities, in any format it's played.
Now go play tarmogoyf in casual magic and the 150 goyf will surely die against a 50cent leatherback baloth 8/10 times and at most your opponent will just stop to look and say "wow, that's really...expensive"

That being said, anyone paying 150 for this should be locked up in an institute for the medically insane
And yes, mostly talking about cash because beyond magic there's another, more complicated world
And no, I haven't suffered an horrible loss against one

I'm totally with you, if Tribal's a card type then Snow should be too.

All the other types can appear on cards alone, while there are no Tribal cards that are not also another card type.

I think WotC just got a bit over-excited about previewing the mechanics that were 'coming soon' with Future Sight.

Dies to Doomblade, so it obviously can't be that good.

On a more serious note, I agree that "basic", "snow" and "legendary" should count as card types too. One could make the argument that they're "add-on" super types, but having inconsistencies like that isn't good for the game, especially because other cards refer to "legendary", "basic" and "snow"-type cards just as they would instants, creatures, artifacts etc.

On the other hand, making Tarmogoyf count all of the card types would only make it that much stronger. But then again, it's Wizard's own fault for printing cards and then doing power errata like that.

The reason Tribal needs to exist as a card type instead of a supertype is to allow creature subtypes on noncreature cards.

You'll notice that other noncreature cards have subtypes as well (e.g. Mountain, Curse, Aura, Equipment, Trap, Shrine, Urza's Tower, Chandra), but never creature subtypes (Goblin, Elf). Each of these is tied specifically to their corresponding card type, which is necessary because otherwise it would be difficult to keep track of/remember/distinguish which was which. We all know that Equipment isn't a creature type, but if someone plays March of the Machines with a bunch of Equipment and Coat of Arms in play, the newer player might think the Equipment gets the bonus.

Tribal cards will always be associated with creature types (the same way Arcane is associated with spells, Equipment with Artifacts, Chandra with Planeswalker). It can't be a supertype because subtypes aren't associated with Supertypes, although I can understand why so many people think it is--the word is an adjective, just like "Legendary".

If it helps, pretend Tribal was called "Tribe" and compare it to Artifact Creatures. Both are card types despite "artifact" not being actually grammatically correct (in English, we'd say "Artificial").

tl;dr: i) Tribal is required for noncreatures to have creature types, and ii) the rules won't allow for Tribal to be a Supertype. I hope that helped.

No creature is worth $175. I would expect a card of that value to demolish its opponent. With the sheer amount of early/late-game creature removal out there, that's just not happening. Something fishy is going on.

Red? direct damage early-on, maybe toxic iguanar.
White? Pacifism/reprisal/wrath
Blue? Counter, or simply ignore it with fog bank
Green? Bigger/faster creatures.
Black? There's not a card in back that's printed that doesn't kill this thing.

I'm far from saying this thing is worthless. It will certainly have to be dealt-with and underestimating it can be your doom, but c'mon. If a playset is going to cost $600, it's instantly not even a card.

I love Tarmogoyf. He is up there with many favorites that I highly value and enjoy. He is amazing in all he does. In the right deck he can easily start demolishing on turn three. He is big, splashable, and fun, even late game, you still get a hefty beater for only two mana. That is pretty cool, and deserves a spot in many constructed decks, for what he can do, is just cause a powerful presence on the field when he hits.

That being said...

Tarmogoyf, as amazing as he is, is NOT worth as much money as he is now, being $200 on StarCity Games atthe time of this posting. Do not get me wrong, he is not to be underestimated and is highly impressive, however, he is not that much at all as he should be on the secondary market. Many players new to Modern, or simply trying to make it into the format competitively cannot do so because of collectors and others whom are simply looking to make bank with this card.

The only reason I can see people spending that much on him is if he was put in Legacy Deck. As I am only trying to get a copy of one for my cube, it is terrible for someone like me trying to get just a single copy.

I may sound hypocritical, but if I spent that much on him, then yes, I would not be happy to see him drop too for he was a major asset to my collection. However, I just do not believe that he should have ever got that high to begin with.

I rate this card 5 stars for being the impressive, combo card/beater that he is, for I only rate cards as such for their strength and abilities in the game, but I disrespect the value that many have put him as. People have become greedy.

what a lot of you people bashing this card dont realize is how well people far better at magic than you can build around this card. its a card that they make become a 6/7 for 2 mana. when you cant kill one with 2 lightning bolts, red is fucked as hell. and when you keep on casting these and your opponent literally can not do anything but try and survive termagoyf after termagoyf, your deck is winning. blue isnt always going to have a counter for every single one of these. sure it dies to doomblade but that card is insane and it doesnt count because that makes you look stupid for basically calling a card out for not being black, or hexproof, the latter of which might have made wizards make this card a 4 drop instead of 2 and make the card not nearly as powerful.

Ok, so... No trample, no defense against Counterspell/Pacifism/Doom Blade/Path to Exile... I can see him getting really big with the right kind of combo, but token decks can block him all day long. Sure his mana cost makes him a threat early on, but he really isn't worth £100.

By far the best creature ever made, there simply is no replacement for such overwhelming raw power for such a cheap and easily splashable mana cost. People saying it shouldnt be worth as much as it is fail to understand that the demand combined with the supply determine price. In other words, Tarmogoyf is so expensive only because the market of serious legacy/modern players are willing to pay that much to have the best chance of winning with the best creature ever printed.

Ok, I get how it can be effective and dangerous in both early and late game situations.... Here's what I don't get, why is it that everyone saying "the best creature ever" can't see that there are many creatures that are just as effective. For tarmogoyf to be effective you have to have the right deck, the right draw and the right strategy.... Otherwise he is next to useless, what if I told you it were possible to cast Jund Hackblades for 2mana that come into play as a 9/8 with haste? Is he now worth $175+ as well? Same weaknesses as the aforementioned tarmogoyf, same mana cost, equally deadly. Also just like Tarmogoyf, his badassery depends on a lot of other cards to make him a beast. So if you think he's worth the money, by all means pay for it. Hell even in standard you can have a 10/10 with double strike, lifelink and trample all while giving your creature protection from a color on turn 4. Point being with all the options out there, there's no way it's worth that much money.

I'll gladly take them for free or under $30 though.

I've noticed that some people seem to think that just because Tarmogoyf can be dealt with and because it doesn't always win the game by itself, it's not that overpowered. The thing that I think people are forgetting is, how powerful should a TWO-DROP be? Although Tarmogoyf doesn't always win the game by itself, since when should a two-drop win the game by itself even a small amount of times? A two drop should pretty much never ever win the game by itself. That is why Umezawa's Jitte is banned. Yes, sometimes the opponent can just use some artifact removal on the jitte, but many other times it will go unanswered and just dominate the whole game. You know a two-drop is overpowered when an excuse that people give to call it balanced is "it doesn't always make you win the game."

For people not understanding why Tarmogoyf is powerful:

Tarmogoyf doesn't "break" the game by any means.
However, for just 1Green, you get a card that gets better by just playing Magic: The Gathering.
If you play, say, Noble Hierarch off of a cracked Misty Rainforest on turn one, your opponent Lightning Bolts him on his turn, and you follow with a land and Tarmogoyf, you now have a 3/4 for 1Green.
That's common. You need no combos. You need hardly any interaction. You need to just pay the mana cost and swing till your opponent removes it.

LANDARTIFACTINSTANTCREATURESORCERY!

Better picture than the original and one of the best flavor texts in the game. Shame these are so expensive even after the reprint. It's a potent creature, comparable to, ironically I might say, Scavenging Ooze yet more splashable. I just wish they weren't so darn expensive, since I like blue and I want to play modern.

On another note, seems like modern marginal cost/benefit analysis curves become rather steep with cards like these, since it's a card that is really just made to be thrown out there as a beat, and not the absolute tank that the price would imply ("dies to" argument). The question is how much better does this make (x), not how good the card is alone.

I get it's powerful for only two mana. I get it's susceptible to removal. But what I don't get is why a playset is $800. I mean c'mon Force of Will Is great but a playset costs $400, half of Goyf here. Scavenging Ooze is also a awesome two-drop, is currently standard legal, fights Tarmogoyf, and still is 4 bucks each. Seriously, people, $200 for a piece of cardboard. If you're into tournaments and hope to win money but you will have to do really well to beat a dozen people who all know about the goyf and all have sideboard/mainboard answers. Otherwise it's $800 down the hole. The goyf is even more expensive than fetches, and they are supposed to be the absolute staples of modern. Plus it can't be any fun when that $200 card is sent to the graveyard. You shouldn't have to keep your wallet in the form of pieces of cardboard. It's awesome, all right? That card is obviously powerful. But even when JtMS was STANDARD legal he got to about $80 per card. Just my two (hundred dollars) cents.

I am going to assume that all the people saying that this is the best creature in the game are only talking about Modern, because he is definitely not the best creature in Legacy right now. Although, he was for a long time.

The three best creatures in Legacy right now are (1) Stoneforge Mystic, (2) Deatrite Shaman, and (3) True-Name Nemesis. The Legacy format requires creatures to have insane utility, or for the Nemesis's case, to be an annoyingly unstoppable force / immovable object. Not just a cheap big guy.

Of course, I am not saying that Tarmogoyf is not a powerful card. Like infernox10 said, "for just 1G, you get a card that gets better by just playing Magic: The Gathering." Automatic synergy with any aggro strategy. And like I already mentioned, he was the best creature for a long time. It is definitely still top 5 and only because Delver of Secrets gets 4th for being able to fly over Nemesis.
