Simple, yet awesome.

Cards like this lead to annoying decks that let only one person actually play, while their opponent sits there and loses to that "lucky" hand. Thank goodness for discard. yay Duress

First time you cast :: Meh, RR. Woohoo.
Second time you cast :: Epic - red dark ritual
Third+ time you cast :: HOLY CRUD. GETTING 3+ MANA overall PER CARD.

Pretty awesome mana exceleration in red. Though also nicely balanced. starts out worse than dark ritual but if you keep with it, it will become better than dark ritual.

You cannot replicate it infinitely. You have to have the mana in your pool before it resolves to replicate it.

If you only have {R} in your mana pool, you can only cast it one time. It's not quite infinite but still a good way to beef up your mana for a replicated bolt or something along those lines.

For those comparing this with Dark Ritual... Dark Ritual is better because it's an instant, people. This is a sorcery! Still good, though. I just thought I'd clear it up a bit.

I thought that you could replicate this infinitely with Djinn Illuminatus, but freakin' copies' replicate costs can't be paid!

you can still get a hell of a lot of mana with the djinn, especially if some are in the graveyard!

If you've got one in the graveyard, you can go infinite with Izzet Guildmage.
You copy the spell, then let the copy resolve, giving you 3 mana (there's a Rite of Flame in your graveyard), then pay the spell and copy again.
No, it doesn't give infinite mana, but you can get infinite storm.

I got 10 of these. They rock.

To get infinite Storm you have to CAST the spells. Izzet Guildmage Says: "2R: Copy target sorcery spell you control with converted mana cost 2 or less. You may choose new targets for the copy.". You copy the spell, so it's impossible to achieve infinite storm with Izzet Guildmage.

Just a notch under Dark Ritual. Good card though.

Phenomenal fantastic and great! Turn 1 howling mine or drop sol ring then a temple bell again... on turn one.

@igniteice

That still doesn't give you infinite storm, because copying a spell is *not* casting it.

Why is this banned in modern?

@cplmontana

Why Pyretic Ritual? 2x Rite of Flame would net more mana.

The first Rite of Flame = spend 1 red mana for 2 red mana. The second Rite of Flame = spend 1 red mana for 3 red mana, which is strictly better than spending 1 red + 1 colorless for 3 red mana.

The only reasons I see for going Rite of Flame-->Pyretic Ritual would be if you're playing EDH and can only have a single copy of any given card or your opponent has graveyard hate.

Rite of Flame-->Pyretic Ritual-->Seething Song=Yes, 5 mana first turn....

Thunderblust, maybe? Then Fling it turn 2?

@lukemol

Ah, good point. More than anything, I liked the this-->to this-->to this rhythm. Although, now, you're much more correct, and I should update that to

Mountain-->Rite of Flame-->Rite of Flame-->Rite of Flame-->Seething Song-->Geosurge

Hamletback Goliath...or...you know...Ember Shot

I prefer the Hamletback Goliath for the lols.

Red is so gross.

I think it's incredibly stupid when people say mountain and four of these and then this and turn one win! Yeah because building a deck is all about needing the seven specific cards in your starting hand.

This card is banned in modern because it enabled storm and pyromancer's ascension decks to make 30 goblins on turn 1 or shoot their opponent with 20 grapeshots on turn 2. This card was never legal with past in flames, where it would have been way worse.

@ereidivh:

Yeeeaaahhh, until you notice that Mox Opal is a Legendary Artifact and you can only have one on the table at any time.

Which is kinda on purpose to prevent exactly what you are describing.

D'oh!

if you dont rate this card a 5 out of 5 then you obviously have some form of a mental handicap

Accumulated Knowledge used to be the best card with this kind of graveyard mechanic, but no more.

When there's one of the grave, this becomes...

Bright Ritual?

This is why we can't have nice things. They had to be greedy and felt the need to go beyond a simple "Add RR" for R. Now all we have is Pyretic Ritual... I think they stopped printing that too.
