Looks like with Urza dead, Uncle Sam is the Coalition's head pyromancer. I give props.

Nice art, but I was hoping it would be Urza ripping somebody's head off.

Even if it's not counterable and the damage isn't preventable, certain spells (misdirection or Venser) can still get to it. I used to think it'd be pretty cool if (then) future sets gave shroud to instant/sorceries, but then Time Spiral came along and Split Second outclassed that.

Being an instant does not make this a mythic, methinks. Banefire and Demonfire do the same thing a turn sooner, even if they are sorceries. Also, they're slightly more versatile by having x in their costs, so what makes this mythic? I disapprove.

It doesn't deserve mythic, 12 CMC, or an overpriced uncounterable lightning bolt, come on!

well, mythic rarity was originally supposed to be based not on the playability of the cards but whether they were for lack of a better word "mythic," i.e. impressive, iconic, epic, etc.
Of course wizards has blatantly spit in the face of that. but there's the counter-argument regardless.

Banefire = cost 4 mana for 3 damage, sorcery speed, and cannot be countered/prevented at 6+ mana.

Urza's Rage = cost 3 mana for 3 damage, instant speed, cannot be countered, and cannot be prevented at 12 mana.

While Rage lacks variability in terms of how much damage you do or how much mana you spend, it's a solid card. If you have two Banefire in hand, you may be able to kill your opponent in two turns but it would leave you tapped out, whereas Urza's would allow you open mana to react should opponent plays something dangerous. Don't forget Urza's Rage can't be countered right from start.

Banefire for straight burn, but Urza's Rage is probably a better choice for counter-burn variant as a finisher.

This is really a cool card, but I personally think it's really horrible. 3 damage for 3 is already bad, and paying 12 to do ten damage just is waaay too much. For red, if you haven't won by the time you can play this card, it's pretty much over for you against any aggro, and control will probably already have a grip on your balls. I think this would only be decent back when games were a lot slower paced.

This... this used to be a really good card. Back in the day. This and Hammer of Bogardan mumble to themselves in a dark, lonely corner somewhere about how they used to be cool.

I think I got it, guys. Check this out:

Urza, Planeswalker

Planeswalker - Urza

{W}{U}{B}{R}{G}

Loyalty: 5

+1: You may put an artifact card with converted mana cost less than or equal to 1 from your hand into play.
-3: Draw three cards. At end of turn, discard your hand.
-20: Search your library for any number of artifact, enchantment and/or creature cards and exile them. You get an emblem with "At the beginning of your upkeep, you may put a card exiled by a card named Urza, Planeswalker into play."

CRITIQUE PLEASE. I want to know what everyone thinks!

is it only me or are this card's mana costs just muuch to high?
Oh yes @ laterlaisOne
not bad but the last ability is much too expensive.. make it twelve or sth like that

You idiots. Coalition vs Phyrexia isn't a core set. The reason this is mythic is because it's one of the foil cards on the front of the box. Same with Phyrexian Negator.

Not a very good card...

Lightning bolt did 3 damage for

and is it really worth paying 12 mana for ten damage? WTF?

Oooops. LoL I KINDA over-looked Volcanic Fallout the last time I commented on this :p
Another Force-proof burn spell, at the same mana cost. Fine fine everybody else was right, this is not 'the best red card in Magic'. just very good. and shiny. Fallout DOES get played in Legacy/Vintage, and I think if it didn't exist, then Urza's Rage Would get played for being Uncounterable.

We need a Reprint Set called Memetic Mutation, where Urza is depicted with a very distinct kind of facial expression.

I know, I know, urza is dead (sorta) but do you think they'll ever make a card for him in some kind of box set? or will they just leave us new players out of the loop on how awesome urza is.

Metalevolence: I have a hunch Limited concerns are part of why mythic isn't all high-story-profile cards. (Note to WotC: Aren't you afraid you're giving Limited TOO much attention?)

I love this thing, in the deck it came with, without changing it at all I've finished someone off with a kicked one of these twice. And the artwork is amazing, although the old one showed the (very) awesome Titan Engine I like this one more.

Yep, this is as Mythic as it gets. Perfect place to reprint it, too. Mythic rares should be (1) iconic, defining the spirit of the set by portraying some really important character or item or event, (2) unique or nearly unique, in some gameplay-defining way, and (3) absurdly mana-overcosted, so that they are bombs in draft and fun to play in casual, but not the new $100 must-have-to-play-in-constructed-tournaments card.

Mythic cards don't need to be good; they need to be awesome. And, Urza's Rage is a perfect example of a not-good awesome card: an effective CMC of 12 is not good, but 10 uncounterable unpreventable damage is awesome.

Three uncounterable unpreventable damage for three mana isn't bad, but personally I'm more terrified of the fact that if you make Urza mad he will channel 10RedRed of HAAATE at you at instant speed.

Don't make that dude angry. You won't like what he does with his four Black Lotuses when he's angry...

2Red for a bolt that cant be countered is playable. And if the game gos into triple overtime then it could be a K.O.

Hint, run with Koth of the Hammer. 6 Mountains + Koth = style.

@spectermonger After what happened to Urza (particularly his head) in the story, I think I know why they didn't have an art with him ripping someones head off....

Not quite sure how do you even gather so much mana in red. Maybe in a goblin token deck equipped with Brightstone Ritual?

I'm not happy at all about this deul deck. They had so many choices for the legends/mythics to put it and they chose the blandest possible ones.
Where was Karn, tsabo tavoc, The Legacy Weapon, The weatherlight, sisay, blind seer, jhoira, Reya Dawnbringer?

Why didn't they make a card as just Urza? They have a million of his things- he's obviously a relevant character. I don't know if he was around before plainswalkers were a type of card or whathaveyou, but still, he should have been a creature...
Norin and Squee, Goblin Nabob get to be creatures but not Urza? I don't get it.

I don't know if anyone has pointed this out, but I think this is worth noting. As far as I can tell, this is, or is at least very reminiscent of the spell Urza cast at the compleated Mishra during the final battle in the brothers war, and also was the first spell Urza ever cast.

Now I could be wrong (and correct me if I am) as this was printed in invasion, but when I was reading the end of the book, this was the card that I thought of instantly.

There is Urza as just a Creature; Blind Seer. He is disguised and is also sort of a terrible card with weird flavor.
That said, this card was better in the environment it was in as opposed to the one we have now where true draw-go is a distant memory. Being uncounterable no longer matters so much early and late you have the variable Banefire which sees no serious play. All that said, at least it is a main deckable sideboard card.
