Oh boy, I'll finally get my hands on this jewel of a combo piece. I'm pretty excited!

The thing looks like it sure would cost at least three mana to turn it upright again after tipping it over.

To quote another user: "goes infinite with basalt monolith"
Just imagine that. This giant monolith falling over, getting back up, falling over....... hope no one lives in it.

Oh. Okay. We'll just stick a REVISED artifact in this set, now shall we? :P

Okay then o.O :3

Not my favorite new art of a card...but it makes me want to buy real Basalt Monoltihs *and* the deck this one comes in at the same time. Those kinds of cards make Wizards LOTS of money x3

OH GOD, I THOUGHT I'D NEVER SEE THE DAY.

Haha, I love this thing. Memories of wacky adventures with Myr Welder and a Staff of Domination...

This +
Pili-Pala +
Myr Welder =

Infinite mana engine in both colorless AND any amount of ANY color you want.
And all of it uses only mana abilities, so it does not use the stack!

And it's all loaded onto Myr Welder, so whatever other abilities he steals at ALL, you can activate them infinitely every turn, by doing monolith + pili pala abilities as many times as needed, then whatever other ability, and repeat. Lol.

Yes yes, lots of cheap mana and obvious combo with power artifact or the wake trasher.

One of its most elegant uses is with morph creatures. Especially when you're playing the reactive morph deck you really need your right colors of mana, and this is one convenient way to assure that. And the three mana you can buyback is pretty sweet.

I love cards like this that kinda suck on their own, but are the at the absolute core of the word "shenanigans" when they're in the right combo.

Urza's name, they brought back the rock. Playsets will now be completely affordable, I should be able to get my own soon. The Johnny in me is frothing at the mouth.

Just to be clear, if you are using this with the Rings of Briarhearth combo, you are copying the untap ability and will need 2 extra mana to get it started. You use the monolith to pay for its own untap ability, put both copies on the stack and then tap the monolith between the resolutions. You will net 1 mana each time around (3 in the pool with 2 "held" for use with the Rings).

@Yoss

The Rings Of Brighthearth combo won't work. Unfortunately the ability you want to copy is a "Mana ability". Sorry to rain on your parade there. I'm just all too familiar with the rings from my Rhys EDH.

You aren't copying the Basalt Monolith's mana ability. With some clever play around the stack you can get infinite mana copying the second ability. You tap the basalt then untap it using its second ability using the rings to copy that second ability. The copy ability will resolve first untapping it, before the original untap ability resolves you tap the monolith again for another three mana.

More like Phallic Monolith! Just look at that thing!

Works sickly sweet with Voltaic Key too.

"First Wizards Bank, how may I help you?"
"I'd like to borrow three colorless mana"
"Alright, we actually have this one card that lets you pay it back without interest or deadlines"

Trolling in a legacy tournament in three steps :

1. Run Basalt Monolith 4x in your deck + many accelerations.
2. Play it turn one.
3. Activate its mana ability, then its other ability, then its mana ability, then its other ability, then its mana ability... until the time limit is over or until he or she concedes.

Enjoy ruining your opponent's chance to have the first place.
