quite efficient at dealing with multiple storm crow

When compaired to the best Altars printed, Ashnod's Altar and Phyrexian Altar , this Altars seems to fall short. However when combined with an Energy Chamber and Power Conduit this card becomes an instant creature destruction engine with the ability to fuel an artifact creature deck or any colorless based deck. The mana requirements needed for this makes this a marginal card at best, however. 3/5

Very expensive, but once it starts going it's very good. It really shines in multiplayer where you can just have it sit around, killing creatures that would have died anyway (to prevent people getting mad), collecting counters, then getting more mana than you know what to do with.
Also, another card boosted by removing mana burn.

I think in multiplayer once they read it everyone will go OH and just either shoot it, or shoot you with a few spells

I keep staring at this thing and thinking of how incredible it would be with a Darksteel Forge ... talk about the perfect artillery platform.

Yeah! Now that mana burn is not a rule anymore, this card is just wonderful. And it's an wonderful source of mana and destruction, too.

use a cople of Power Artifacts and you got a done deal. use in combo also with Mycosynth Golem to get him out easyer. once you got more charge counters on him than the cost of his ability (which considering where this card comes from, he wont be working alown) than he is a tap:destroy and a mana sorce.

If you're playing a long enough game, this card could pay for itself after a while!!!

My question: If you can afford to cast a seven mana artifact why would you need more mana?
I could definitely see me running this one in my Glimmerpost-Cloudpost-Vesuva-deck where 7 mana is not a problem at all.

interesting card but a little expensive. of course, there are ways to circumvent that.

@bijart_dauth: Mycosynth Golem only works with artifact creatures. Power Artifact would work, but wouldn't be a big deal, since if you have the mana to cast this, then you also have the mana to use it. Sure, you'd spend a few turns using your mana for nothing but this, but in the process you're packing repeatable removal, which isn't a bad use for a turn. And eventually, this thing itself will be giving you the mana you need to use it.
In other words, if you're playing in a format where you can expect the game to go long enough to use this, it's great, but otherwise, it's almost impossible to get any use out of it, since you'd need to deal with both the casting cost and the activation cost. Sure, you could Tinker this out or something and then use Coretappers and Proliferate to charge it up, but in that case, why not just Tinker out a Blightsteel and be done with it?

"My question: If you can afford to cast a seven mana artifact why would you need more mana?"
Clearly you are not a Timmy. You ALWAYS need more mana. Especially if you want to run this every turn. And if you have this thing in a prototype portal, you require the killing to activate more than one per turn.

I love me some repeatable, colorless removal. Inefficient, but with some charge counter shenanigans can explode into a massive mana source and creature remover.

When I saw this, I immediately thought, "Helvault".
I'm not entirely sure why:
Maybe it's the art? Maybe it's the ability cost?
Whatever it is, this is a fine spell that should be played with Contagion Engine in EDH.

Simple. Turn three, with two dark rituals, and three swamps. Of course, you'd be outrageously lucky to do that, and also the turn before, play power conduit, and the turn after, play two more, if we are doing a 0.1% chance thing.

It's an odd combo, but i actually run this in my mono-white lifegain/control deck. Stretching the game out to the seventh turn is no problem whatsoever, so this actually is really helpful for repeatable removal. Then, later game i can use the black mana for white sun's zenith. This fills a much needed slot for a more offensive card.

Turn 2: Forest, 3 Llanowar Elves
Turn 3: Forest, Altar of Shadows
Turn 4: ???
Turn 5: Profit!
Also you could use Prototype Portals and Coretappers.
