Amazing artwork! I still think they should have kept the old art because it was an invitational card.

If I had one of these, I'd switch to blue-white to play it.

An awesome card that is always fun to play. The mechanic of this card definitely embodies the controlling, orderly flavor of blue-white.

The way that I'm seeing the artwork, that's not flames, its clouds. Very nice card, although there are other cards (common cards even) that do a better job of what this one does, only on a more pemenent basis. Never the less nice card, but not worth the $11 to $30 that some folks have been paying for it recently.

my favorite card, yeah this is THE skill tester; know your opponent's deck and get rewarded. Sometimes it's super obvious like naming Tendrils of Agony, other times it'll come down on Swords to Plowshares, and against burn, just name whatever and have him sponge a burn spell for you. The new MM is nice, but needs more cleavage.

This still an Awesome card. It can stop an uncounterable spell or mass-destruction spell before the opponent can even draw the dang thing; that is the most priceless thing you can ask for.

the artwork is astonishing, yet i don't really get how those flames are related to this W/U card.
i personally prefer the notorious oldschool artwork with the blue/yellow auras floating around the hands, which was also kept in the promo version.

I've won a couple FNM games by naming a win condition such as scourglass and the like. Keep evaluating the situation. Your meddling mage is far from invincible. Protect the mage, and the mage will protect you.

The ability of banning both master transmuter and bloodbraid elf is more than enough to give it a 5/5. This card is pure strategy rape, and I love the hell out of it. Anyone who is doing white/blue control simply needs to get four of this and I assure your survival rate against the new über aggro will increase drastically.

in the current environment, naming volcanic fallout is a huge play. The opponent was hoping on wrecking your early drops easily, then coming in with bombs. you shut them down with meddling mage, drop a baneslayer, and see how they deal with it. usually by conceding.

The effect doesnt end at the end of turn. Nothing on the card says "As long as Meddling mage is in play the named card cant be played." I like bouncing Meddling Mage with unsummon to reuse its ability.

For those who doesn't know, wizards rewarded certain players with their unique card which featured themselves as wizards. From the original four (Meddling Mage, Shadowmage Infiltrator, Sylvan Safekeeper, and Voidmage Prodigy) one didn't get reprinted anymore, 2 got reprinted in timeshift (1 with alternate art, which is fine as stills features the contest winner) and one got reprinted in alara's cycle.
As you can see meddling mage is quite popular and even sees play in eternal format, maybe not as top tier, but sees play. I find unfair that they removed the original art, but well, at least someone uses it and got reprinted, unlike the poor Sylvan safekeeper that didn't even get his tribute in timeshift...
I guess they changed the art because the reprint in TS weren't too popular or something.

Zieg: The effect does not linger, I'm afraid. If you name a card, bounce this, replay it, and name another card, you don't get to negate two cards. Look at a card like Moat. It states, simply, that non-fliers can't attack. When it leaves play, that abilitiy ceases to function- which is good, of course, because otherwise it could shut-down most decks singlehandedly for the entirety of the game. The same holds for cards like Platinum Angel. If it was required to add the qualifier "As long as X remains on the battlefield...", you wouldn't need to protect your angel. As soon as you played it, it would grant you losing immunity, regardless of what happened to it. Now, you're right in that it doesn't end at the end of turn, of course. And bouncing it is useful if, for instance, you shutdown an early removal spell and now you want to defuse an impending bomb in the late game. But only Cloning can two-for-one your card shutdown. Or possibly some other trickery that I'm overlooking.

I believe - though this card is amazing regardless of the playground you allow her to frolic in - she is especially amazing in Standard when all you have to remember is a few major players in the world of Type II play. After all, there is far less chance of you being wrong when there are only so few cards to pick from, no?

@SIlverSkyz- I'm pretty sure he'd have to name a specific card, rather than just a part of it. If he meant to say Gatekeeper of Malakir, but couldn't remember the exact name, you probably would not be able to play it.

can i play the meddling mage and then say a token like 2/2 zombie or 1/1 kor soldier token to prevent them from being made by a creature already in play or a possible spell?
Something I like about this card as opposed to others like it, is the fact that the named card stays in the opponent's deck, they just can't play it. thought hemorrhage removes the card entirely, thus thinning the deck while this one leaves the card giving the opponent a useless draw.
On the other hand, it dies easily to virtually every cheap removal spell.

Love this card. Love checking out the opponent's hand before i play her with gitaxian probe. Love bouncing her with venser or aether adept. Love bringing her back with sun titan.
For people complaining about the flames, i'm guessing that she's preventing a pyroclasm from hitting her or something.

This has won me more games than I can count by working with Gitaxian Probe to render 2 (or even 3) copies of a single card useless in one shot. It is so good at ruining a perfectly good hand that it has gotten the nickname "Captain Hatred" in my play group. Vendilion Clique and Tidehollow Sculler have similar abilities but this has to be my favorite.

Totema: In EDH, it depends on how you use it. I've had some decent success naming my opponents' commanders while I've a Mimic Vat in play - it creates a great amount of political fun, as people need to figure out whether or not to risk it coming back naming something more important.
Plus, I pulled a premium one, and it looks gorgeous. :P

Turn 1: Aether vial Turn 2: leave mana open, remand what they play next turn
Turn 3: play meddling mage with the vial for what you remanded, then leave mana open and repeat the process
seriously, remand into meddling mage is an excelent move.

I looked around and found a list of the super-powerful invitational cards on the MTG Salvation wiki.
Olle Rade - Sylvan Safekeeper
Darwin Kastle - Avalanche Riders
Mike Long - Rootwater Thief
Chris Pikula - Meddling Mage
Jon Finkel - Shadowmage Infiltrator
Kai Budde - Voidmage Prodigy
Jens Thoren - Solemn Simulacrum
Bob Maher - Dark Confidant
Terry Soh - Rakdos Augermage
Antoine Ruel - Ranger of Eos
Tiago Chan - Snapcaster Mage
and Tsuyoshi Fujita designed Gemstone Caverns in a special public vote event.
That might help other noobs who are confused by Chris and Bob jokes on Gatherer. :)
