Time to splash green in every deck I ever make until Eldrazi and vampires go away. =/

Sideboard in standard. This card is junk if someone isn't playing a deck that forces sacrifice. However, as stated, if they are using annihilation they are going to have to change their game to compensate for this puny 2/1 getting in their way.

The anti-Annihilator. Unfortunately, very susceptible to traditional removal.

I just love the functionality of this card. Great design and just in time with all these annihilating Eldrazi around.

This card also allows trolling, Greenpeace style:
- bring your exemplary Tajuru Preserver.
- get a Smokestack.
- donate the Smokestack to the greedy relentless industry director (your opponent).
- wait until the opponent confesses that these air-poluting buildings are bad by saccing the Smokestack.
- ????
- PROFIT!

Going in my Elf deck for sure. Or at least the sideboard.

ANNIHILATE THIS.

This thing rules for anti-Gatekeeper alone, plus he's an elf. It's hard to justify running 3 or 4 of, but maybe the format will prove demanding for it. Excellent Sideboard weapon.

Have to try this in a green deck in an anti-eldrazi deck with a lot of deathtouchers.

Green just gave Black a massive middle finger with this one.

With Wizard's obsession with Mythic Rares, how did this wind up as a lowly Rare?

Cool. I never thought that Wizards would do this. Gravepact, Savra, and Kuon are no longer the superiority complexities that they used to be. However....

First I saw two Privileged Positions. Then Elspeth's ultimate (or something equivalent). There is also True Believer. All of that was cool. I still hyped up Innocent Blood and even Simplify. But this card is one more important step in a player becoming unstoppable. This player, mind you, likes to stack his deck. I don't mind because it doesn't matter too much.

But yeah, this is one more piece for the unstoppable board position..... hmmm........ funny.....

@ Eved,

You've probably resolved this by now, but... Urge to Feed does not contain the words sacrifice in the de***ion. It just lowers power and toughness. (Buries even indestructible creatures should their health reach zero or below.)

We should look at this card without considering how it nutrilizes annihilator to see its true usefulness, as annihilator is not incredibly heavily run. This guy stops Consuming Vapors AND Gatekeeper of Malakir. Perhaps not worth a slot in a deck yet, but when Shards vanishes from Standard, it may find a home.
metalevolence
★★☆☆☆ (2.8/5.0) (3 votes)
why is this rated so high?! this is ridiculously narrow and horrible. it's only rare because of how preposterously narrow it is. come on gatherer community, get it together.
UltimaCenturion
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Should be uncommon.

And Mode, fun fact of the day: Oxygen is the strongest normal matter pollutant. :D Isn't that cool? If you dispute this, look up the evolution of plants, and see what happened when they evolved. YET LIFE GOES ON.
But this has nothing to do with this card.
Actually, you could run the combo you're talking about quite easily in a multiplayer game. Just hand it to the opponent who's least likely to sacrifice their stuffs.

But yes! This gets rid of annihilator! Which is why it should be uncommon, so that more people can run it.
It also messes up stupid Thraximundar EDH decks. It also happens to mess up my Teneb the Harvester deck, but thus far I have not run into it. :) And pretty much everything else messes up my Harvester deck, anyway.

@metalevolence: because, it hoses down a mechanic, especially one that hasn't been disabled until now

just think how Everlasting Torment or Stigma Lasher was received (even though we had a rain of gore before)

I'm kind of surprised it took them this long to do a card that specifically hoses sacrifice mechanics.

This just in; hoses Destructive Force.

people, this is not 4 stars worthy. yes it is good against decks based off of sac effects and eldrazi, but take it out of Rise's enviroment and 98% of the time, it is useless.

My buddy got his signed by RK Post, and now it has wings and flying. A 2/1 for 1Green with flying and anti-annihilator. I really wish they would make it...

As for what it does, it's just a silver bullet for eldrazi, not that green elf swarms needed a way around annihilator (except emrakul).

turn 1: forest, llanowar elf
turn 2: forest, harrow for forest and island or plains, Tajuru Preserver
turn 3: island or plains, aura flux, keep two mana open for protection
turn 4: land, donate aura flux
turn 5: enchanted evening, convince yourself you arent a bad person

just make sure tajuru doesnt die and its pretty much game unless their deck is like legacy playable

Well, at least it protects itself from sacrifice, if not other forms of removal.

Three words drain this thing of much of it's potential combo juiciness. I'm not sure if that is a good thing or not. I haven't looked to see if he would have had any stupidly broken combos outside standard, so Wizards may have been on the ball with this one (unlike the retardedness that was printing Protean Hulk as is).

Otherwise, just the typical auto-printed rare that WotC makes each set to either grant all your creatures/spells the showcased keyword (Cast Through Time) or to take it away. Not bad, but still only only hurts one aspect of the Eldrazi it was meant to protect against. In that regard, it's worse than Guard Duty except against Emrakul himself since that also takes their extreme power out of the equation. And that is only half a Pacifism which is a poor man's Oblivion Ring (which WILL hit Emrakul).

Not trying to be a "Dies to removal" idiot, but he is an answer so I'm comparing him to other answers in the format. And unless you have some combo around him or playing mono-green (even then, there are more tricks in Green like Arachnus Web at instant speed with the Arachnus Spinner), there are better.

The bad part is that it only works reactively, so you can't combo it with your own stuff like Razia's Purification.

Interesting hatebear. Many classic monoblack decks. . . and Cruel Ultimatum usually demand an opponent to sacrifice. There's less narrow hatebears out there, sure, and recursion is not difficult to achieve but it's a GREEN hatebear. . . having 1 in the sideboard is useful enough with Green Sun's Zenith. I actually like a lot of these RotE rares. They make sense.

An excellent card; my EDH Uril, the Miststalker deck loves him so much; limits opponents' options so much.

I have a jund "cheat fatties into play deck" with Elvish Piper, Quicksilver Amulet, and Triassic Egg, among others, and I also play a Thrun the Last Troll aggro deck. I picked this card up as soon as I read about it - in EDH, it's phenomenal, especially against the one annoying teenager in my meta that loves to play Death Cloud when he starts to lose. The look on his face when I instant-speed dropped this into play when he tried to wipe the board was priceless.

Updated in Avacyn Restored to a 5/5 hexproof flyer: Sigarda, Host of Herons. Much more resilient, since they can't just Doom Blade it and go back to making you sac creatures. The extra 1WhiteWhite and legendary status are tricky, though.

Sigarda, Host of Herons looked down from the heavens and saw the Preserver. She descended before him, speaking with angelic serenity, "Dear Elf, You are an admirable creature; such an asset to your allies and yet so vulnerable and situational! Please teach me your ways, that I may carry on your legacy after you fall out of Standard!"

Preserver simply nodded as he continued to etch trees, chuckling softly at Ulamog's latest attempt to wipe out the plane.

His knowledge of sac hate she would never forget, and with his guidance she became the greatest of the standard angels, standing firm against Liliana herself as the cruel planeswalker unleashed killing wave after killing wave, enraged that her doom blades were cast aside.

That was the day Liliana learned to truly despise angels.

Do you run Green Sun's Zenith?
Having a 1-of of this in Legacy can save your ass from Emrakuls while you chump him with lame creatures.
