Combo with Annihialator and sacrifice effects and you can get as many lands and nonland permanents as you can have, I guess.

"Reanimate" is one word actually.
But i agree, black Timmys will be pleased with huge Eldrazi without the replacement effect that makes you shuffle them into the library if they get to the graveyard.

Kazabet: It's the multiplayer version of the APNAP rule: the abilites go on the stack in turn order, and then of course resolve in reverse order. Once one resolves, the others can't apply anymore since it's no longer able to be found. In short, the player whose turn is farthest away gets to take the sacrificed permanent.
Kazabet

So what happens in a multiplayer game if there are two of these out?

I think some of you are missing the part in the text that says "When an OPPONENT sacrifices a permanent." You can't use it to keep the stuff you have to sacrifice to use Harrow or creatures with Devour.

YES! This is one of the two card from the whooooolllle set I wanted to find at the prerelease (the other being Lightmine Field) and I GOT "IT..." in my third pack! I couldn't have been happier.

I got to play him twice and it was ghastly to see his power.

Now I'm off to make a deck based around him...mwahahahah...

Edit: I found a great strategy to get IT out quick through the graveyard. And when IT hits the battlefield, he notices that a Grave Pact has already been made.

Hmmm, so butcher of malakir, gravepact, world queller, mortician beetle, and so on?

Looks like the lord of sacrifice deck, rather than an eldrazi. Could do interesting things with this and consuming vapors and hand of emrakul. Even a fleshbag marauder or cruel edict could create some interesting plays.

Also, this card and all is dust.. seriously? I mean yes you need a lot of mana, but talk about a game ending play. All your opponents stuff is dead and you get it on your side while keeping your giant annihalator creature.

I can see two good combos you could do with It That Betrays:
1) Other Annihilator cards (Eldrazi or Eldrazi Consri ption), which I already expect people would be doing.
2) Grave Pact and a Devour deck (though any deck where you generate lots of little creatures and destroy them for whatever reason would work as well).

For all of you who are complaining that there are other ways to win with this much mana (ie 12, or around that much for any Eldrazi creature): Magic is a card game. Games are played for fun. This card has much potential to be fun. Not everything has to be sanctioned-competition viable and always super efficient.

An interesting question.

In a free-for-all, 4 players, player A and B both have It That Betrays, and while Player C and D is sacrificing permanents, who gets the the sacrifice? What happens here?
BlackAlbino
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
I got this in my second ROE booster. I then stuck it in my red-blue deck...
We both had bad hands. I had too much mana my opponent had too little.
I hade a rite of replication & an izzet guildmage but there were no good creatures
I draw this little ( big big big ) guy played him ( opponent gasps ) next turn I kick rite of rep and duplicate.
I gave 11 of these and opponent stopsbreathing.

There are too many good ways to use this card and I think it's a bit OP aside from being costly as hell.
I removed it from my RU deck because of it's difficulty to summon in a slow-mana deck.

Also had fun snatching a planeswalker w/ this =)

I used this bad boy in a casual deck. 1st turn was land then played Fyndhorn Elves. 2nd turn was play land, tap two for survival of the fittest and searched for Elvish Piper with Fyndhorn's mana. Turn three played another land and the Piper and turn four searched for this guy and played him with the Piper. Yeah it was not long before it was GG.

If only there was a cheaper version...don't get me wrong, I adore the Eldrazi, they are almost as badass as the Phyrexians, and that's saying something.
But this mechanic is just begging to be abused. With Mortician Beetle in the same set and BlackseveralBlackBlackgreatsacrificing cards, this mechanic could become very powerful, not to mention tons of fun.

I have a few questions about this card.

1) When creatures are sacrificed and It That Betrays is out, do they actually hit the graveyard? Or does It That Betrays effect take place before they can?

2) Additionally, if someone clones an It That Betrays, or for that matter if someone plays another, who do the sacrificed permanents go to? I assumed that they'd go to the controller of the second It That Betrays that comes out.

Thanks!

It's kind of unfortunate, really, no one bothered to mention classic huge sac removal, excluding balance, and All is dust.

Here's a few that some people might want to consider:
Razia's Purification: Each player Sacs all but 3 permanents. (6 mana)
(you reap the rewards, then attack to take all but 1 of theirs in total)

Global Ruin: Each player sacs all lands except for one of each basic land type they control. (5 mana)
(not quite as effective, but it nets you a huge mana base in multiplayer)

and my personal favorite

Cataclysm: Each player sacrifices all permanents they control except for 1 land, 1 creature, 1 enchantment, and 1 artifact. (4 mana)
(usually, you'll take the land and the echantment if they even have one out and they'll block with the creature)

Anybody knows whether ItB would work well with Living Death?

Some people think that the mass sacrifice would trigger ItB's second ability, while others say that ItB's second ability would not trigger because it's sacrificed as well, all at the same time.

Some reminders from the Comp Rules October 1st 2010:

101.4. If multiple players would make choices and/or take actions at the same time, the active player (the player whose turn it is) makes any choices required, then the next player in turn order (usually the player seated to the active player’s left) makes any choices required, followed by the remaining nonactive players in turn order. Then the actions happen simultaneously. This rule is often referred to as the “Active Player, Nonactive Player (APNAP) order” rule.
Example: A card reads “Each player sacrifices a creature.” First, the active player chooses a creature he or she controls. Then each of the nonactive players, in turn order, chooses a creature he or she controls. Then all creatures chosen this way are sacrificed simultaneously.

701.13. Sacrifice
701.13a To sacrifice a permanent, its controller moves it from the battlefield directly to its owner’s
graveyard. A player can’t sacrifice something that isn’t a permanent, or something that’s a permanent he or she doesn’t control. Sacrificing a permanent doesn’t destroy it, so regeneration or other effects that replace destruction can’t affect this action.

Swamp + Dark ritual + Funeral Charm to discard It That Betrays + Exhume It That Betrays = now your opponent has to deal with an 11/11 on the first turn.

Kozilek should have this guys ability instead. I mean, kozilek is just "draw 4 cards. yeah, now i'm just an eldrazi." I mean, yeah, just an eldrazi, but here come it that betrays, some normal rare with ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US

Also, because most people will sack their lands first, he helps you play other eldrazi

Flavor-wise my fave Eldrazi next to Emrakul, The Aeons Torn. Emrakul tickles my Lovecraft Timmynator pea green, and this tickles my Neon Genesis Evangelion Fan-Within! :D

Play-wise, this one beats all, even the titans. I love how it turns Diabolic Edict into a permanent Ray Of Command.

Also, the name is utterly brilliant. I shiver when I read it.

Hmmm...

It brings things back from the graveyard, even other players'. That sounds like a black thing to do.
It steals control of other players' stuff- that sounds like a blue thing.

But since it's an eldumbzi, it's colorless and flavorless. It's just a big, boring heap of hurt that is so not-memorable that it doesn't even have a name. It's just "it," like in the book A Child Called It. The design team seems to have handled the eldrazi in a similar fashion to the child in the book.

This card also touches my Evangelion nerve. The art, the name, the flavor text all give me that creepy feeling that I get when think of the Angels from that series.

Which brings me to Ideatog's comment.

That's just what is so scary about the Angels, and this thing on the same flavor. They're like intra-planar children. They have no sense of pain and mercy, and their lack of understanding when it comes to morality goes way beyond mortal scope. That's what scares me about the Angels, and by that token; this card gives me the willies.

For people that is saying anything about this cost:

You can Entomb/Putrid Imp this guy and exhume him in turn 1( with Dark Ritual), since he DON'T share the "can't go to graveyard" thing that other Eldrazi have.

So, yeah, the cost don't matter to much XD.

So, in a match of EDH, if an opponent were to sacrifice their general it technically goes to the graveyard from play then as EDH rule state if a commander dies or is exiled you can return it to the command zone. My question is, does It That Betray's second ability take effect before the general would be put back into the command zone or would the option of placing it back into the command zone take priority over the second ability?
shotoku64
★★☆☆☆ (2.0/5.0) (3 votes)
It That Betrays's Second ability is a replacement effect. It replaces the act of a sacrificed permanent going to the graveyard to where the permanent goes to your side of the battlefield. The permanents never hit the graveyard while It That Betrays is out
Dr.Pingas
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.7/5.0) (3 votes)
@Shotoku, no, it is NOT a replacement effect; it does not say INSTEAD anywhere. It says WHENEVER, which means it's triggered, it happens "whenever" it's requirement is met.

You know, the other day, I was actually explaining to my friends that this card is the standard I refer to when defining a "broken" card. Stoneforge Mystic and Sword of Left and Right can't possibly be broken; they aren't this guy. Iona comes close.

It oozes flavor, is balanced, and is a pretty scary threat. It's also fairly cheap to acquire and you could (for whatever reason) have multiples on the board. Not just an 11/11 colorless Eldrazi with Annihilator 2.
Not just an 11/11 colorless Eldrazi with Annihilator 2 that resurrects whatever creatures your opponent is forced to sacrifice (and not just by its annihilator).

It's an 11/11 colorless Eldrazi with Annihilator 2 that resurrects whatever creatures your opponent is forced to sacrifice and isn't reshuffled into your library from the graveyard.
