Why do the Planar Chaos timeshifts have 'rulings' stating what cards they're shifted from?

M^SS removal is very {W}, it always has been. {W} is the great equalizer (although, it's funny how uneven m^ss removal like WoG and DoJ makes things for your opponent). For these reasons Damnation only exists in a set like Planar Chaos.

Hm. I think the basic philosophy behind this card is one where black and white overlap. White reaches the destination by equal application of consequences, or fairness. Black reaches it by its tendency to hurt itself, along with others, in its quest for domination and power. In this sense, Wrath of God could just as easily have been black. With the appropriate name change... hence Damnation.
I'm not sure if every timeshifted card is so nicely mirrored.

Destroying Creatures feels very black but creating balance by cleaning the WHOLE field is very white. So it fits both colors very well. People that dont understand why WoG is a white spell are ignorant. Also in what it actually does, it has more defensive values and white always has been the main color for board effects especially mass removal. I bet if WoG would have said exile instead of destroy, black players wouldnt argue about it being white.
Plague Wind for reference is definitly black and a white version wouldnt be flavorful
Also remember that this set is planar chaos, which is about color bleed, where for example, green gets non condotional card draw (Harmonize) and white direct damage (Sunlance). I am not saying damnation doesnt makes sense in black flavor wise (because it does) but R&D just decided that Board Sweepers like WoG belong to white in the color pie. (Mainly to balance the color pie - remember when blue used to be op in the old days?)
As a sidenote i recently had a 3HG Match with 2 Monoblack Zombie Players in my team. I used a white deck and when i casted a Day of Judgment one of them said: "wow its like a white damnation - thats funny" :D

This is so broken. In white it works, it's the kind of instinctive all or nothing decree that society makes when hard pressed, and as always black can profit from white's mistakes - but in black it just means that everyone's graveyard is full of fodder for their zombie spells, and the flavor is gone. :\

One of the best black cards there is. It has been a long time coming for a card of this nature to be printed. The nature of the card fits with white but this card definitely makes sense in black. I have 4 in my deck and it is one of the cornerstones of how my deck functions. I just hope they never reprint it..they already have Wrath of God for that. I just wonder if there will ever be a black version of Armageddon printed.
What would REALLY be awesome is if there was some type of 'End of Days'' card where all players put all permanents that they control into their graveyards, then discard their entire hands, then all players exile their graveyards. There may already be one for all I know..

I would so love to be able to get these. As the myriad comments say: -Blackest of the black -Beautiful artwork and the frame + black edge makes it so imposing -Stronger effect for black given the many graveyard interactions

So much better than Wrath of God because decks with white usually run creatures, meaning some of your stuff gets hit too. Decks with black have fewer creatures much of the time (such as U/B or esper control), making this almost always all-downside to your opponent
This would be a great card, if its price tag wasn't 20$ +! Not worth 20$ to me at all. Great artwork though, great effect for it being a black wrath of god. I was always so sad I never pulled even one out of any of my tournament packs, and I had bought several. I love opening boosters, lol.
If I hear one more person claim that Damnation will get a reprint in *insert set name here*, heads are gonna roll. Well, not really, but it's getting annoying. Still, probably my favorite of the timeshifted cards, and I do think it at least deserves a Commander reprint or something.
