"Power Artifact has no effect on artifacts that have no activation cost"
Oh, good thing they cleared that up. I was wondering how this would affect nonexistent abilities. (pay -{2} to do nothing? I was so confused)

Nobody must have been paying attention when they made this card. Maybe they thought people would be using it on their Colossus of Sardia or something.
Once it was printed though... oh they started paying attention. Basalt Monolith used to have errata on its ability specifically to stop Power Artifact from working. Rocket Launcher decks used to see quite a bit of play. Candelabra of Tawnos suddenly became "get at least 2 extra mana per turn", not that the card wasn't broken to begin with. So. Many. Uses.
@nemokara: That's meant to apply to artifacts with 0-cost activated abilities. The classic reason for that ruling is people throwing this on Urza's Avenger to prevent it from gaining abilities.

Does anybody know decent alternatives to this card? I really like it, problem is, finding them is gonna cost me a pretty penny
Basalt Monolith + Power Artifact (or alternative of your choice) + Mana Reflection = asinine mana ramp?! - get all these gooing, and abuse as you wish - whether it be abusing Stream of Life and gaining asinine amounts of life, abusing Nin, the Pain Artist and forcing opponents to draw their entire libraries, or whatever else you can think of.
This is great on Prototype Portal. I can just imagine the looks you'd get if Batterskull or the scars swords were imprinted on the portal.

This was one of the first "combos with everything" cards, where you'd think of another use for it almost every time you looked at an artifact. So much fun. They really need to print another card with this mechanic -- yeah, sure, it's crazy, but so what? Crazy can be good for the game sometimes, too.

Travelsonic, I don't see why you need a Mana Reflection there. Basalt Monolith + Power Artifact is already an infinite mana combo.
