If it were only reprinted in 9th Edition instead of Ravnica: City of Guilds, we'd have another core set survivor.

Could have at least had new flavour text. :( Every other version has at least one change from the previous one, wouldn't have been so hard to keep that tradition going.

I like the BoP picture from Ravnica, but thematically I don't think this card belonged in that set to begin with. Is there a stereotypical tropical paradise on Ravnica? The answer is no, being an ecumenopolis, Ravnica is a city that completely covers the planet. As you can see even in the picture, nothing but giant buildings in the background, where did the tropical Birds come from?

Why in the WORLD do they keep reusing the Ravnica art? The art makes absolutely NO sense for the card outside of Ravnica, and as others have pointed out birds of paradise didn't make any sense in Ravnica to begin with! The original and 7th edition arts are soooo much better (okay, the original was supposed to be Volcanic Island and the 7th edition art only shows one bird, but the art they are using is better suited for a card named Colorful Slum Bird or something).

"Long ago, birds of paradise littered the skies. Thanks to the city's sprawl, most now exist as pets of society's elite."
Since this is a core set card, it is no longer specific to Ravnica's theme, they reprint cards with the same artwork like that all the time, with core sets it's more about aesthetics than theme. And 'paradise' is not limited to lush, tropical places... to my mind, a paradise is any happy, ideal place or state.
Personally, I don't like the older artwork as much because of how simple they look. The older artwork doesn't look elegant or flowing enough to represent paradise to me. That is just my opinion, though. But I have a feeling that is what WoTC was thinking as well.

If Wizards loved me they would surprise me and print a modern version with the old art so I could get a foil. I love the look of the old art, but I don't care for white-bordered cards. I also think it would be aesthetically interesting to drop a few very old arts back into modern sets for contrast. As much as I loved the art direction in Ravnica I've never liked this art, and it's unfortunate to see it continuously reprinted when there's a prettier option laying around unused.

Wizards has realized that there is only one bird in the art, and they are going to fix that in the next core set. How, you ask? Well, the name "Birds of Paradise" is confusing when there is only one bird, and the name is also bland and is not high-fantasy, like all creatures should be. Birds? No no no, Wizards is going to create an entirely new bird that is completely different and redefines the identity of what a fantastic bird should be! No longer shall an ordinary bird be the measure of a 0/1 flier! Behold, the new face of Magic:
Runeclaw Bird {G} Creature - Bird Flying {T}: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. Birds aren't always as vibrant and feathery as you imagine. Some are even vibranter and featheryer. 0/1

@BonniePrinceCharlie Read the flavour text from Ravnica version: 'Long ago, birds of paradise littered the skies. Thanks to the city's sprawl, most now exist as pets of society's elite.' And if you'd read the story, plane Ravnica wasn't covered in city since beginning. There was lots of nature&stuff. It was in Gruul's duty to protect the outlands and nature, but because city spread over every last inch of land, there wasn't any nature to protect and Gruul became group of gangs and raiding packs, unlike it's old function. So in short: Ravnica wasn't all city from beginning and that's why there were birds.

Really, I hope this never leaves the core set, but with Wizards' insatiable need to fix things that aren't broken, I'm sure they'll take it out at some point and we'll get a 1/1 for G that taps for any color of mana with the justification "Green isn't supposed to get easy access to fliers."

i have 2 guesses for this card:
they will skipp this in m13 and print it in return to ravanica, and b/c its in a non-coreset set it will get new art
OR
they print this in m13 with new art to foreshadow what is going to happen in return to ravanica
either way we are getting new art :D

The second time it will be excluded from a core set. Mysteriously right before another Ravnica block. I'll be quite surprised if it isn't reprinted. Looking forward to new art though. 7th8th edition art was beautiful, and the original art is a classic. But I've grown quite bored of this one.

This card doesn't have anything to do with lands. You don't use a land from your deck or your hand. You simply add the mana to your pool so you can use it. Think of it like it's a land card, you just tap it and it produces mana.
