Why does this card have the Mirran watermark?
Talcos
★★★☆☆ (3.9/5.0)(4 votes)
@Necrosage_Disel: It has a Mirran watermark because it's a natural inhabitant of Mirrodin that's unaffiliated with Phyrexia.
@LeafWheels: In most cases, when a creature card names itself, it means "this creature". For example, if Ashling the Pilgrim was in a graveyard, Necrotic Ooze would have "1R: Put a +1/+1 counter on Necrotic Ooze ".
Tarox Bladewing is different though. If it said "Discard a card named Tarox Bladewing," then you'd definitely have to discard a card with that exact name. But since it says "Discard another card named Tarox Bladewing," it implies that the name of the creature and that of the card ought to be the same. But what if they aren't? The wording is ambiguous to me. I'll have to look this one up at some point.
@VoidedNote: It doesn't work with level up creatures in the way that you want it to. The only activated ability it copies is the "Level up" ability itself, and not the "if you have x or more level counters, the creature has these abilities, power/toughness, etc..". So Necrotic Ooze isn't very useful with levelers.

May need an official ruling made on this one: Does the ooze have the activated abilities gained from different levels of Level Up creatures? IE, does he have T: Deal 3 damage to target creature or player with a Brimstone Mage in the yard? Does he get T: Draw a card off Enclave Cryptologist? Twin-twincast off Echo Mage? etc etc.

201.4b If an ability of an object refers to that object by name, and an object with a different name gains that ability, all instances of the first name in the gained ability should be treated as the second name.
So if you have a myr propagator in the graveyard and a necrotic ooze in play, the ability gained by the ooze should for all intents and purposes read,
3, Tap: Put a token that's a copy of necrotic ooze onto the battlefield.
This would be frowned upon in a casual environment, I imagine, which is too bad, because I also think it's the only place these three cards could be played together. This ooze's ability is just so cool (and potentially ridiculous).

★☆☆☆☆ (1.9/5.0)(4 votes)
@talcos: I would disagree with SOME of the leveler abilities. I THINK that it works with cards like Brimstone Mage, Guul Draz Assassin, Joraga Treespeaker, and the like because those ARE activated abilities when they get those level counters on it.
The most interesting idea to me is comboing with the Reassembling Skeleton and Sacrifice abilities. That way you can sack the Ooze and then return it play once it hits the graveyard.
abmaynar
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
@isaacboyd : that was actually my question. I know once the necrotic ooze is in the graveyard it's static ability no longer counts, so it can't be reassembled. But I wondered if officially it was allowed to say, have a fume spitter in the graveyard along with a reassembling skeleton, activate the skeleton ability with the ooze while it's in play, then sac it with the reassembly on the stack and have it come back immediately afterwards?

@abmaynar
Reassembling Skeleton 's ability can only be activated while it's in the graveyard. Necrotic Ooze's static ability only works on the battlefield. At no point could Necrotic Ooze have the ability and activate it, too.
Even if you could activate it from the battlefield, rule 400.7 states that the Necrotic Ooze whose ability you activated on the battlefield is not the same Necrotic Ooze that appears in the graveyard, even if it's the same card. The ability would resolve, search for the Necrotic Ooze that was on the battlefield, and do nothing since that Necrotic Ooze has ceased to exist.

isaacboyd
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
If I have a Necrotic Ooze in play, and a Brimstone Mage in my graveyard, do I get to tap to deal damage or do I need to level up my ooze first?
@isaacboyd: You can level up your Ooze, but it won't do anything for you. Level up creatures have a combination of an activated ability that lets them get counters, and static abilities that change their stats and give them abilities based on the number of counters. Necrotic Ooze doesn't get the static abilities, and thus will remain the same.
@Zefaris: Yes, you can untap the Ooze for with Soliton in your grave. Very nice if you have a creature with a tap ability as well.

I love this card in my Crypt Rats/Scythe of the Wretched combo deck. Not only can this creature act as a Crypt Rats for my combo, it can also gain regeneration via a cheap costing card like Will-o'-the-Wisp. Regeneration on a Crypt Rats?!? Thats just too good to be true... add a few Buried Alive and a Crypt of Agadeem and you get your "regenerating-Crypt Rats" and the mana to use it all in one step... (depending on your mana availability at the time).
This card is the GREENEST (in an eco-friendly way) black card Ive seen! Instead of wasting your destroyed combo creature just reuse it! Waste not want not... even a company that makes money by printing on the products of over forestation is promoting a green life style!
This is my combo deck that I use Necrotic Ooze to great effect in...
I can only think how fun this guy can be with levelers... I'm assuming you get to pick the level up cost you pay among the creatures in the graveyard and you get all the level-up abilities (that require activating at least). And the myr propagator combo some one has already mentioned...
Turn3: Play Island, tap Dimir Aqueduct and island, tap Trickster Mage and discard Morphling to untap Dimir Aqueduct, play Necrotic Ooze, equip Lightning Greaves. Unlimited mana immediately. Play Buried Alive and get Bloodrite Invoker into the graveyard. GG.
If you don't have Morphling in hand, tap Necrotic Ooze to untap both lands, play Buried Alive and put Morphling, Bloodrite Invoker and Eater of the Dead. Exile Eater of the Dead to untap Necrotic Ooze, unlimited mana unlimited life absorb, GG.
Alternative turn 3: Play Island, tap Dimir Aqueduct and island, tap Trickster Mage and discard a card to untap Dimir Aqueduct, play Buried Alive to get Necrotic Ooze, Morphling and Bloodrite Invoker. spend the remaining black mana to pull Necrotic Ooze up using Reanimate.

Level abilities are triggered by the level so Necrotic Ooze can't get them (although it can put level counters on itself, they're useless).
Focused on Standard lets see what's available. Most this is too slow or takes too many cards to be competitive...
Fauna Shaman is a perfect fit. Not only can it help get the critters we want to graveyard, but the Ooze can learn her ability.
Gigantomancer and Spikeshot Elder should end the game pretty quickly at 7 damage for 2RR then attack. Spawnsire of Ulamog gives 2 tokens for 4 that can be sacced for 1. With a Training Ground, that gets interesting quickly. At the very least, you can build up mana and use them as immediately replaced (using the mana from saccing them) chump blockers.
Sphinx of the Magosi for counters and draw...for U with Training Grounds. Carnifex Demon if we can figure out how to get -1/-1 counters on it...easy in Extended. Veldaken Anatomist maybe better for graveyard use.
Soliton well known untap for U is a great enabler... Brass Squire to bounce equipment around. Sea Gate Loremaster tap to draw a card with an ally in play. (U to repeat)
Soliton and Harabaz Druid in graveyard plus any 2 allies in play (with the ooze) gives infinite mana of any color...which can then be used to draw your whole deck, turbo discard cards with a Fauna Shaman in graveyard to gain new abilities, etc. Too bad Mul Daya Channelers doesn't work as it would make it much easier.

Seems like it will see Legacy play to me. Turn one Ritual into a Buried Alive, turn two Reanimate/ Exhume this guy with two abilities that should end the game. It was funny before Wizards revised the oracle text on Phyrexian Devourer to watch people make Necrotic Ooze a 107/107 creature on the board on turn two. (Combo: turn one, play Entomb for Devourer; turn 2 play Dark Ritual and Necrotic Ooze; toss forty cards or so off the top of the library). Even ignoring the fact that Survival of the Fittest could find all the combo components for you, that combo was obscene. The Survival of the Fittest build with Badlands could even put Anger in the graveyard for an alpha strike. Crazy.
There've been more powerful two-card combos in Magic (Flash + Protean Hulk, Fastbond + Fireball or whatever), but I can't think of any two-card combo that screamed "BROKEN" more plainly than Ooze + Devourer.
Thank goodness for Oracle text-revision fixes. I didn't want to see Entomb banned from Legacy again!

How does this card interact with flip cards in graveyards such as Nezumi Graverobber, Jushi Apprentice, and Budoka Gardener?
If you were to activate the ability of one of those cards in a graveyard and then the condition to flip that permanent was met, would Necrotic Ooze get flipped? Is it even possible to flip it? And furthermore, if it was to get flipped, would it gain the activated abilities of the flipped half of the card (Nighteyes the Desecrator, Tomoya the Revealer, Dokai, Weaver of Life)?

I'm starting to see a very weird, very fun, and perhaps even competitive (if it were sufficiently tweaked and revised) Necrotic Ooze/Birthing Pod deck here...
Oh, how I love the many awesome and splashable kill-spells in black right now!
OOH! I can also assign Mimic Vat to backup duty, which will not only recycle some of my most awesome creatures, but will also provide disposable fodder for Birthing Pod!
Also, use with DKA's new Beguiler of Wills to get her awesome ability out of that expensive 1/1 body, and can be used to return a lone Havengul Lich to life in singleton formats.
@ the_trendkill- you can activate the flipping ability, but it will fizzle as it has no valid target (ie- a flipped side of Necrotic Ooze). Changing to the flipped creature in the GY is out because the ability is changed to say "Necrotic Ooze" instead of the original creature's name (see below). The same holds true for INN block DFCs.
@ occamsrazorwit- not true; read the bottom ruling for Necrotic Ooze. Any ability which references the original card's name is changed to reference Necrotic Ooze instead.

@ ThePhoenixOfDoom: What are you talking about? Necrotic Ooze doesn't interact with Viridian Emissary in any way; it has triggered ability, NOT activated. For the 100th time: Activated abilities contain a colon. They're generally written "Cost: Effect."
@ SyntheticDreamer: It would be much more efficient to just use the Griselbrand itself, since with flying+lifelink you get your life back = free 7 cards. Not so with Ooze.

Found a nice infinite mana combo with this guy:viridian joiner, orochi leafcaller, horseshoe crab. And if you wanna spice this up: Feral Animist, Cinder Elemental, Myr propagator. That's infinite damage, infinite power and infinite ooze tokens. Like this you could win a multiplayer game in one turn even with 6 or 7 enemies. All you need is a Thornling and a Horror of the Dim in your graveyard for the invincibility and maybe a trespassing souleater for unblockability, to be sure to get all the mana you need because of viridian joiner just pay one off of gigantomancer. This combo might seem not very realistic but with a buried alive and some Fauna Shamans it can easily be pulled off. And in a 1 on 1 you will only need one of the win conditions which makes only 4 cards that have to go in your grave. Have fun with your new deck :)

Step 2: Use a graveyarded Myr Propagator's ability to create copies of Necrotic Ooze.
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit.
Seems like it will see Legacy play to me. Turn one Ritual into a Buried Alive, turn two Reanimate/ Exhume this guy with two abilities that should end the game. Does that make him a better target than reanimating a Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur or Iona, Shield of Emeria or any other old standby? We'll see. It seems like it's in good company.
Fetch up Devoted Druid and Morselhoarder for immediate access to infinite mana of any color.
Fetching Spikeshot Elder or Bloodrite Invoker as well will pretty much win you the game immediately, or for a flashier finish, grab Spawnsire of Ulamog and dump a sideboard full of Eldrazi onto the table.

What do you think?
@The_Trendkill:
No, because the ability is "flip Nezumi Gravesomethingorother" so Necrotic Ooze would flip Nezumi Gravesomethingorother

Oh, how I love the many awesome and splashable kill-spells in black right now!
OOH! I can also assign Mimic Vat to backup duty, which will not only recycle some of my most awesome creatures, but will also provide disposable fodder for Birthing Pod!
This is seriously starting to look very cool. I wish I could fit in
This is really turning out to be...one hell of a deck. :D
such as those of Shauku, Endbringer and Demonic Hordes.
Also, use with DKA's new Beguiler of Wills to get her awesome ability out of that expensive 1/1 body,
and can be used to return a lone Havengul Lich to life in singleton formats.
Any ability which references the original card's name is changed to reference Necrotic Ooze instead.
step 2: Traumatize self
step 3: ????
Step 4: Prophet
Combos aside, I love the type of creature around which countless combos are created. Such as this and its cousins The Mimeoplasm and Experiment Kraj.
Palladium Myr + Pili-Pala = Infinite mana of any color
Any creature that can tap for
Any creature that can tap for
@ SyntheticDreamer: It would be much more efficient to just use the Griselbrand itself, since with flying+lifelink you get your life back = free 7 cards. Not so with Ooze.
Turn 4 drop necrotic ooze.
Turn 5 drop asceticism
Opponent by now should be hating your guts.
Turn 6 drop witch bane orb. Opponent is considering forfeiting by now.
From here you have some time to play with em. If you really want to be a dick get rampaging baloths and primeval Titan into the grave and just start unleashing.
Awesome card, 5/5
I have a strange suspicion they may be lovers...
@ Grave_titan314 - is that supposed to be a joke? None of those creatures have activated abilities! They are all static or triggered...
What's the point of putting all those creatures with static abilities in the GY? Necrotic Ooze only gets activated abilities from creature cards in the GY. It doesn't get 'all my perms are indestructible' or 'all opponents perms enter play tapped'.
Edit: Living Wish and a little stack of backup combo critters, plus a Wild Mongrel or Putrid Imp on the field or in the yard. Demonic Tutor does the trick, too, but I like the wishes as an excuse to go rummaging about your person for whatever is tickling your fancy right that moment.
Edit: *That should say Hateflayer. I always get those two confused...
Then add Pentad Prism. After doubling it a couple times, it can produce infinite mana with your Ooze.
