Not as good as Steel Overseet for Tempered Steel, but a solid replacement regardless.

Out side of that, great card for human tribal.

This guy is insane in Ghave, Guru of Spores EDH. Make some tokens, then use Mikaeus to put counters on all of them to make more tokens.

Flexible as all hell, which is often the sign of a great card.

Also, proliferate. Yeah, low hanging fruit.

Drew it at the pre-release today. It's less good than you might think, since you usually have to wait quite a lot of turns to make it big and useful, and then often you will not have that many creatures anyway.

Really could use Vigilance.

But in a token deck with mana accel?? Great. Seeing he is so easily splashable.

Pulled one at prerelease today...Quite useful, but I found it tended to never get above 4 or 5 counters for sealed before someone used some flavor of removal on it. Useful, but not amazing.

Pretty insane, if he's on his own he levels up, if u've got more creatures a little 1/1 can become a mighty 4/4: 5 o 5

Guys.

Primordial Hydra.

Gavony Township.

This combo is ABSURD (in casual, anyway; in standard it'd probably crumple under the unfun weight of UB control).

Pulled him at the Prerelease. Really one of the better Mythics in Innistrad, if you ask me. You can drop him early and build him up each turn, or you can surprise your opponent (like I did) by dropping him late game at 9/9.

I feel like in later blocks he might turn evil or something, though.

Also I can't help but refer to him as Mike.

fun fact; if your opponents usually save a kill spell for him, he's probably pretty good

also, i'm surprised no one has pointed to Doubling Season

Pulled him at the prerelease, Fiend Hunter trounced him. Agitations ensued. But every other time, growing fliers were really useful for me. 4/5

Being released around Halloween its a shame wizards didn't reprint gilder bairn. Where's our favorite trick or treater in this flava filled block?

I guess your luck with him in a draft will vary. He did great for me, I kept getting him out around turn 5, and I usually had at least 3 other creatures on the board. Despite the fact I was playing against a lot of black, red, and blue decks only once did someone manage to remove him before he could do anything. Each other time I got to use him at least twice, and by then the damage was done and my opponent was looking at 3 or more 3/3's or greater. Throw into that a couple Spare from Evil's and I didn't pretty darn well with him :)

Very amazing card, a little bit overpowered through...
But at one point I am a little bit disappointed: He is an equivalent to an pope, so he is an priest in fact. So, why he has abilities where he can be very big, and can even more bigger? I mean, he is an priest and not an holy warrior and he can be a 5/5 or more? Mmh...

Mikeus is AWESOME in a human deck. play him, equip mask of avacyn, so he won't die when he runs out of counters. he'll also have hexproof, which is good. then, play angelic overseer, and you win.

I love this card, put it in the deck the moment I have it. Combo wit Gavony Township, he's a killer pump! Only thing though if he's exiled (via Oblivion Ring/Fiend Hunter) & return, he'll instant KO

He's my EDH general. "Creatures you control" are arguably the three most powerful words in Magic for white, and this guy's a repeatable buff, not to mention he can end up being quite the fatty, if need be, and a Human, which gives you a lot of fun support. If you can get Lightning Greaves on him, all the better.

There's only one thing I would change, but I can understand why this didn't happen. Instead of remove A +1/+1 counter to power up all your creatures by +1/+1, I wish it would say remove X +1/+1 counters. All of your creatures get X+1/+1. But then again, he would be so O.P., he would teeter on the edge of broken.

In current standard you have more than enough to protect him. I'm currently trying him on a WW Human deck, and with the many double-strikers I churn out things get out of hand pretty quickly. I never need to pump him more than 2, except when I want him to be out of Shock range (RIP Lightning Bolt), and next turn he can give me an extra 4-5 power on the table. Specially good with proliferating shenenigans. Also, since no one mentioned, pair him with Ajani Goldmane for the vigilance everyone keeps asking for and extra counters on everyone :D

Thanks to Dark Ascension, only one question: if there is more than one Mikaeus, are they called Mikaei?

Run both Mikaei with Sorin, Lord of Innistrad for ridiculousness. Not amazing win-ness, just ridiculousness.

@ Quibbleflux: You must be psychic. Or work for wizards. :)

I guess Protection from Red would make him too good.

And the card would be getting cramped with words.

But. I mean. All those candles? He looks like he needs it :/

Five starts, here's why:
There are very few times when you will pull him and go "Ah darn"
I've played him early and watched my opponent squirm as my army just kept getting larger.
I've also played him with twenty manna once (My opponent had a very efficient "kill everything" combo deck with no win condition) He wound up taking Thirteen -1/-1 counters (Yes counters, it wasn't a tragic slip) and was still the biggest creature that had ever hit the field in that game.

As good as this card is, I think Mirror Entity is much more efficient.

Cool card. He's a little slow to get going, and being a creature, he's very fragile. But if he survives, he can make your army quite fearsome. I'd probably 'board him out against sweeper decks. In Limited, of course, he's a turn-two bomb that needs an immediate answer. I also like the flavor of it, though I was sad to see him zombified in DKA. :(

Use a Power Conduit to move at least a counter back on to Mikaeus after he gives them out so you can put out counters each turn without Mikaeus running out. I run this in a Ghave undying/persist deck. Fun with counters.

If you don't fancy paying for that annoying 1 white in his cost, Edgewalker can help there. In fact, if you want to cast him for nothing, try Edgey and Blessed Orator for a 0/1 that'll just get bigger... until someone shoots him in the face at least.

Reason I chose them? They're both Human Clerics. TRIBAL POWAH

You'd think it was good on paper. Think again. Labourious, mana draining, counterspell baiting, turn-eating card. Avoid.

as Zoah mentioned, great card cuz you can pull him almost any time and he's viable. Great with freed from the real as a way to pump all your creatures quickly.

Play Ajani, Caller of the Pride and frustrate your opponents. The abilities could not be more complementary. "Shall I attack with a 10/10 flying and double striking Mikaeus the Lunarch, or shall I create 20 3/3 cats who gain a +1 counter every turn? Decisions, decisions..."
Plus you can have all of this up and running by turn 3 with Mikaeus defending Ajani from the earliest stuff.
Turn 1: Any land
Turn 2: Plains, Mikaeus, 1 counter.
Turn 3: Plains, Ajani, Caller of the Pride, who makes Mikaeus 2/2. If you block with Mikaeus tap him to be 3/3 to kill Grizzly Bears and the like.
Turn 4: Begin your reign of terror with your Lunarch who grows by 2/2 every turn until you hit Ajani's ultimate.

An extort deck's best friend. A fun thing I like to do is combo him with High Priest of Penance and various extorters, using him as a way to pump them up slowly and keep your extort base on the field. If you're running an Orzhov control deck, he's a must have in that regard.

You know, by the strictest reading, his wording calls for a target that doesn't exist. "Mikaeus" when he is Mikaeus, the Lunarch. I'm not sure how that interacts with Mikaeus, the Unhallowed. Hopefully well.
Lord_of_Gelectrodes

Ironically an infinite combo with Mikaeus the Unhallowed, so long as you use Artificial Evolution and name something like Homarid or Donkey.

Question: Can I have This along with Mikaeus, the unhallowed on the battlefield or will they die from the legendary rule? (They are both legendaries and both Mikaeus, but their names are different)

This is my favorite hydra! He rips his heads off and puts pieces of them onto his allies, and then grows a new one!

Very solid in white weenies.

Planning on using him in my G/W elf-token deck together with doubling season and a massive elf-created mana pool..... Just do some simple math, will you?

"Counters to the people!!!"

He is super fun for commander whether you're going for tons of tokens OR modular shenanigans. Either you are making lots of big dudes, or your opponents can never get rid of a dude that just adopts the counters you've been building up.

(I personally like the latter since mono-white already has Kemba, Kha Regent, Brimaz, King of Oreskos, and Kongming, "Sleeping Dragon".)

Here's my example of a Commander deck around him: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/i-love-candles/
