If you can get past reading this card without dancing in delight, we have new artists. Seriously though, this is so strong.

I can copy my favorite creatures AND artifacts? For one mana less than Clone? In ANY color?

Wizards, you've made me a happy man.

This just proves that Phyrexians are superior. They perfected clone by giving it the properties of Sculpting Steel.

I could see this making rage extractor very powerful. Play a slash panther and do 5 damage TWICE?! That could be a very ugly turn 6 (assuming you pay the life for rage and you don't mana accel).

I guess Clone is obsolated huh? I still remember taking Clones to tournaments to deal with their Yoseis and Simic Sky Swallowers. Though a Clone would not be nearly as effective against most Titans, especially the red and green ones.

The love child of clone and sculpting steel.
Its difficult to understand the impact that this card is going to have right away, simply because its so versatile.
Its cheap, can be used in any color, and can copy two of the most common types of permanents without targeting. Goodbye Thrun
A must have for me.

It would be funny to use liquid metal coating and make your opponent's plainswalker an artifact, then make this a copy of the plainswalker, thus blowing up opponent's plainswalker.

@Gabriel422: well, it is better than clone, except for clone beeing not vulnerable to artifact removal.

This is better than Clone because of the reduced mana cost, but not that it's not strictly better. The inherent weakness of artifact creatures is that they can be hit by both artifact removal and creature removal. In addition, if you choose to use this to copy a noncreature artifact, it can still be countered with Remove Soul, unlike Sculpting Steel.

So, yes, it's better overall, but Clone is not obsoleted.

Thinking about playing this in Valakut. Any single one of my creatures that it becomes a copy of will probably be worth 3 mana. Either I have 2 lotus cobras for insane ramp, an extra overgrown battlement for insane ramp, or an extra of either titans for win conitions, OR an extra Avenger for MOAR plant tokens and double +1/+1s on them.

As a guy who likes Clone for casual formats, I was naturally excited to see this card printed. I was thrilled, but there's not much to say beyond that; the card is just superior in almost every way.

Hey: at least they didn't make the card also strictly better than Copy Artifact!

That's funny, it sure doesn't LOOK like a Sword of Body and Mind, or a Baneslayer Angel, for as little as {3} you get a creatures (sometimes) and artifact (other times) and a removal spell (when copying legendary creatures like Emrakul, The Aeons Torn or legendary artifacts like Mindslaver) ... all wrapped into one card, that you don't even have to splash {U} for (hypothetically speaking). So many uses, comes in as the best thing in play, and can be utilized with your own permanents, i mean really, who wouldn't want two Myr Galvanizer instead of one?

★★★★☆ (4.7/5.0) (15 votes)
This is a pretty strong candidate for the best card in New Phyrexia. This card is, by far, the most flexible card in standard - and maybe one of the most flexible cards in Magic, period. Not only because it can copy any artifact OR any creature, but it can also be played in any color. There are so many solid applications - even if, for instance you need another land for some reason. Why not animate a man land and play your metamorph? You have a shiny new land, as well.

This card has so many amazing applications - take an equipment, take a creature. It's an excellent way to counter legendary creatures and, heck, with Liquimetal coating - you could even counter Planeswalkers. This card will find its way into a ridiculously high number of decks over time.

There is only one disappointing part about this card, the art! Don't get me wrong on this one! The art is great! Its just that I would have really liked it a bit better if the art was closer to an older style Clone! How cool would that be seeing something like an Elf or vulshok staring down a phyrexised, robotic clone of themselves!

I don't see why any deck wouldn't run at least one of these guys.(except maybe über aggro decks that don't run anything past 1-2cc cards. maybe). The moment we got this as the release promo, every single player thought of different ways to use it, from the fifth Knight exemplar to ways of using it to beat Thrun/blightsteel/whatever. Also Soul sisters, but who cares about that.

How does one improve perennial favorite Clone? Make it playable in any deck, you say? Make it come into play for one less mana? Make it able not just to double up on Consecrated Sphinx card draw slaughter but also capable of laying double the beats with a Sword of Fire and Ice? Make the art look far tastier, especially in foil?

It seems more Mirran than Phyrexian IMO because the "it's an artifact in addition to its other types" clause. However, I guess it could have been Mirran until the Phyrexians took control of it, proven by the Phyrexian mana, the name, and the watermark.

Ridiculously versatile, coming into its own in EDH where you can copy whatever good stuff your opponents have out, or just use it as a Vindicate on an enemy Commander.

I love this guy so much! If Snapcaster Mage is copies 5-8 of my favorite instant, then this baby is copies 5-8 of my favorite artifacts and creatures! Two life (And I never seem to pay the extra, even in blue.) is a very small price to pay for a Sword of War and Peace. Also I have had some wonky shenanigans with him and my Tezzeret the seeker.

This card is ridiculously good. It literally saved my U/W deck's ass dozens of times, in ANY matchup. I just defeated a friggin' elf deck 3-0 thanks to this baby copying a simple Wirewood Hivemaster. It's just SO versatile. All in all, i have to say it's one of my favorite cards ever, simply for the combo/aggro potential and for how fun playing this is. 5/5 stars, and i usually don't rate cards this much just cause they're excellent (or broken): playability is what makes this shine, and the way it unlocks infinite ways of having fun, gawddammit.

what would happen if you used Argent Mutation on a planeswalker (Say, Jace, the Mind Sculpter), then play this, copying that. What happens at the end of your turn when it is no longer a creature? Does it copy what it was or is it an invalid target or what?

All right, well I got so tired of "strictly-better-than" arguments that I asked Mark Rosewater to come up with a term to describe how much better this is than Clone.

He told me this was "More Phyrexian than Clone."

Then there were a stream of comments arguing about the concept of strictly-betterness.

I tried, folks. I tried.

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
@Artiificer- you sure can, but you need to A) have metamorph not copy anything when it enters and B) have something that will boost it's toughness otherwise it'll die instantly.

@atemu1234- again, you can. and both planeswalkers will die, so your metamorph will become a copy of target Jace, then the planeswalker rules happen when state-based effects are checked, and both will die instantly. however, if you play metamorph with mirror gallery out, then both will stay in effect, and your phyrexian planeswalker will enter the battlefield as normal, loyalty counters and all. It will enter the battlefield as an artifact planeswalker, and will remain that way permanently or until destroyed, even though the effect that made the target valid was temporary.
Skiefyre
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Actually mirror gallery does not allow multiple planeswalkers in play. Planeswalkers are not "legendary" and as such removing the "legendary" rule does not stop them from destroying each other.
"306.4. If two or more planeswalkers that share a planeswalker type are on the battlefield, all are put into
their owners’ graveyards as a state-based action. This is called the “planeswalker uniqueness rule.” "

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
This should've had another drawback really. The ONLY 'downside' is that it's an artifact - but it can become an artifact too.

The blue phyrexia cost is the stupid part though. Seriously. This is ridiculously awesome in my GOBLIN deck. As long as you have a lord out, you can get a copy of it and also have some tech for Legendary murder.

On the upside... it must be nice to get this in a booster on the basis that it'll fit into nearly any deck you'll have. I hated pulling a tribal lord from a booster for a tribe I never used, and this thing will go into nearly any deck.

A great card, it's usefulness is totally limitless. One time in my artifact deck I could either use it on a Master of Etherium, a Sol Ring, or a Cranial Plating. Should be fun in Legacy. Whatever your opponent does you can copy on a budget. Drop a goyf? Well now you have one too! For like.. $2.

Batterskull? That's weird, you don't remember putting 4 batterskulls in your deck do you?

There will always be something killer to copy for 3-4 mana, just have enough control that you get to keep yours and that they lose theirs.

I'm sure someone else has said it in the nine pages of comments, but if it hasn't, I just think this is fun.

Liquidmetal Coating + this = I can copy any permanent I can target! Just fun, especially in EDH were you might want to clone an Enchantment of some sort. Or a land possibly.

Not sure if I'm correct but if he is a creature 0/0 and u copy say a Sol Ring, won't he die when he hits the battlrfield? It says he retains his other types...so creature is his type and a creature cannot be a 0/0. Any judges able to clear this up for me? It looks to me he can only copy creatures and artifact creatures...

Strictly better than the T-1000, as it can't form complex machines. Guns and explosives have chemicals, moving parts. It doesn't work that way. But it can form solid metal shapes. Knives and stabbing weapons.

I wonder if we will get a metamorph like creature in Journey to Nyx. Just enters the battlefield as a copy of an enchantment or a creature and is an enchantment in addition to its other types instead? I always love more clones. Maybe even work bestow in some how if it isn't too difficult (it seems difficult)
