The best part of this card is even if it will damage you the tap part is really easy to get around. Just tap him in response to hid trigger and you still get to destroy a land or creature.

Not many big prot black critters out there. Less that have good abilities.
Anyway, a pretty good demon. Getting that one critter per turn is easy today, and he has a very powerful effect, combining Demonic Hordes with a proto-Visara/Avatar of Woe (minus the "bury").

Comparatively solid for its day. Even back then, the mandatory creature sacrifice wasn't so difficult to get around (See Breeding Pit) and the mana cost could be abrogated with proper ramp. Pro-black is also pretty strong.
