It's a turn 0 win only with Gemstone mine. What happens is you begin the game with gemstone mine already in play and with a luck counter on it. Then you remove either simian or elvish spirit guide from the game to get a second mana. You cast flash and do the hulk combo. All of this happens during your opponents upkeep! Aside from Force of Will, Leyline of the Void or Pact of Negation (which would kill them anyways) it is basically impossible to stop this combo if you have the right opening hand.

Does everyone know the turn zero win combo? In my opinion, it revolves around the protean hulk.

Anyway, if you don't know, I think I can list it here.

First play a Gemstone Mine or Gemstone Caverns.
Then exile Simian Spirit Guide from your hand.
Tap Gemstone Mine for blue mana and cast Flash, putting Protean Hulk into play, then sacrificing it.

From here, you can do a variety of things. But if you still want to win on turn zero, then first search for 4x Disciple of the Vault. Then 4x Shifting Wall and 4x Phyrexian Marauder. The eight artifacts die instantly and you can have an opponent lose 32 life.

I'm not sure why, but for some reason, this is all "turn zero".

There's a whole decklist for this combo, but I haven't memorized it...yet.

@person1234:

Either land will work.

You have to do it before your opponent's upkeep for it to be considered turn 0.

Opening Hand: (for optimal awesomeness)
1 Basic Land
1 Lotus Petal
1 Flash
1 Protean Hulk
2 Force of Will
1 Blue card of your choice

Play land, lotus, flash, hulk, search for:

4x Disciple of the Vaults (cost: 4)
4x Phyrexian Walker (cost: 0)
4x Ornithoptor (cost: 0)
4x Shield Sphere (cost: 0)
1x Arcbound Ravager (cost: 2)

drop them all, sac the 12 0 artifacts to the ravager, and target player loses 48 life. If you go first. Of course, force of wills are to counteract any force of wills on your own spells. Build your deck accordingly.

Happy Flashing, my friends.

Flash got restricted in Vintage because the combo with this guy was so damn good decks designed to do that consistantly wone in the first two turns.

With Flash restricted in Vintage consider using Serum Powder for a better chance to open with it, plus Mystical Tutor to get it on turn 0 and win on turn 1. I don't use Arcbound Ravager, I found Atog much easier to acquire and for the same CMC and effect (except you can't sac the Atog to itself like the Ravager). But these are just some suggestions for Turn 0 kills, although my deck usually takes until turn 2, turn happens occasionally, and very rarely do I get a Turn 0, but man oh man, it is fricking sweeeet!

I thought it was only turn 0 with gemstone caverns, hence you can combo out from your own opening hand when your opponent starts first before you get a turn. You won't be able to get gemstone mine into play until you get a turn.

I personally have this card in a G/U deck to bring out Experiment Kraj, however if I already have it in my hand or in play I like to use it to bring out Vigor to boost Experiment Kraj's usefulness.

Actually Arachibutyrophobia, the turn 0 combo ONLY works with Gemstone Cavern.

Scenario: You, Arachibutyrophobia, are on the play. So I get to put my Cavern into play immediately before your upkeep. Then, during your upkeep, perform the combo.

Scenario with Gemstone Mine: You, Arachibutyrophobia, are on the play. You play your turn (turn 1). Then I play my Mine, and then perform the combo. On turn 1. Because Gemstone Mine can't be in play until my first main phase.

I've seen this used in a scary fast beast deck with Metamorphosis , not only do you get creatures but the mana return as well. Not only did the person that did this get cheap chump blockers and mana producers but gets to play a big beast with the mana. 8 mana plus mana producers and or chump blockers that's pretty funny in my book.

@person1234 - Gemstone Cavern is the one with the luck counter and starts out in play under certain conditions. Gemstone Mine has "mining counters" on it and is not in play when the game starts.

@Arachibutyrophobia - He was explaining why it's "Turn 0". If you have Gemstone Cavern out with a luck counter, you can play all of it before their upkeep. Since you're going second (or at least not first) you haven't had your first turn yet - hence Turn 0. So, no. Gemstone Mine will not work to do it on "Turn 0".

ArachibutyrophobiaLast time I checked you can only play lands(like Gemstone Mine) on YOUR turn. Gemstone Caverns gets out earlier then that, making it work on Turn 0.

He's great when your playing two-headed-giant, and are sharing mana. Cause your deck is filled with nothing but elves, and him. You search for him if you don't have him in your opening hand, then kill him the moment he hits the table, then proceed to dump your entire deck on the table, next turn, tap to add 60+ mana to your mana pool... Play, you know, whatever.
He really, really, should cost a lot more, or it should read, "Any number of creature cards, who's combined converted mana cost equals 6 or less..." or something like that.
Also, every Titan drops, and of course Mimic Vat to make everything else that much worse for your opponent.

@Arachibutyrophobia: I think you have Gemstone Caverns down before the game starts by having it in your starting hand and going second, then on your opponent's turn, you do the combo as an instant. Overall, the chances of getting the turn 0 win are probably rather slim (that's how it seems to me, but I've never played with it). But it is very potent, and you can still probably get a pretty good chance at it maybe turn 2 or 3, as long as you don't start wiff too many 0 mana artifacts

"Maybe I'm not reading the card right, but...Relentless Rats?"

You'd get two rats when Protean Hulk dies; the combined CMC of two rats is six.

In the wrong deck, when this dies, you still have a good shot at winning.

If you don't have the money for Force of Will, Foil works just as well against this combo.

I'm not much of a 1st turn win-person, so my combo with Protean hulk and Flash would probably be something like:

T1: Mountain, Amulet of Vigor
T2: Island (or any Karoo-type land that adds Blue - you may float the other land's mana), Flash the Hulk and drop Primeval Titan + 4 Dryad Arbor, search for some more lands with Titan's etb ability and cast Burst of Speed. You can choose to attack with or without the Dryads. If you choose not to, you'll have 7 untapped lands in your second main phase (8 if you floated a red land off the Mountain with a Karoo-land). If you choose to attack with the dryads, you'll have 3-4 untapped lands. Either way, you'll have enough mana to cast some additional spells before passing the turn, and you'll have swung for 6-10 dmg on your 2nd turn.

If you don't hit the jackpot and have all four cards in your hand, you can at least still flash the hulk into Primeval Titan and Dryads, in which case you'll start your 3rd turn with 8 mana untapped lest your opponent cleared the board somehow.
Idk, I just like the thought of being able to start my 3rd turn with 8+ mana by only using two cards. If you can manage to drop a Plains and a Steppe Lynx on your 1st turn instead of your Amulet of Vigor, you're in for some serious landfall on your next turn.

And I'm definitely speculating too much about flash-hulk combos...

Flash, Reckless Abandon, Relentless Rats. Good luck with mana production, that's not my problem, but you can figure it out... use Harrow or something... or construct some convoluted grixis deck. *** it, you can even use just black and green and find ways to sacrifice it using the plethora of black spells that do so (e.g. Vampire Aristocrat)... even devour.

This card is the best friend of any heavily armed legendary creature deck, or even any multi-coloured green deck. Instead of having 2 Arcanis the Omnipotents, 2 Kazuul, tyrant of the cliffs, and 2 Riku of two reflections, I can just have one of each and one or two of this thing, with only a gain in average performance! Heck, put it in with some nice dryad arbors, and this is by far the best creature summoning tool ever!

To put it in the words of the simple: "Hulk smash!"

Why do so many people seem to think this card can drop everything in your deck that is under a 6 CMC?
Combined means ADDS UP TO.
Can someone point out a rule clarification or something to this effect and make it a "Sticky!" We need sticky messages on these boards.

Had what was quite possibly one of the most satisfying starting hands ever involving this:

Swamp -> tap Swamp -> play Gravecrawler
Mox Diamond-> discard Protean Hulk
Tap Mox Diamond -> play Culling the Weak -> sacrifice Gravecrawler
Play Apprentice Necromancer
Play Apprentice Necromancer's ability
Return Protean Hulk to play, then sacrifice at end of turn.

TL;DR: Massive zombie horde in play turn 1, including Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and his minions Death Baron and Lord of the Undead.

SubstantiaNigra, your post begs two questions:

a) how did you activate the Apprentice Necromancer despite it having summoning sickness?

b) how did you get all those zombies in play when Protean Hulk's ability is already spent on Mikaeus??

DO YOU PEOPLE EVEN KNOW HOW TO PLAY THIS GAME???

Think of it as cascade except:
-You get to tutor the card
-If the first card isn't enough you may tutor another. Repeat this process.
-It occurs on death; which is more easily used/abused than casting.

Even without crazy T0 decks he can tutor and play a titan for you if he gets killed.
That's card advantage in green; which is a beautiful thing.

It's a shame this card is so broken in with Flash, it's a fun card to play and has tons of awesome interactions without being broken, but will forever be tarnished due to the deck archetypes it often finds its ways into.

When I first started playing Magic, I was so much of a Timmy it hurt. I treasured my only copy of this.
