Incredible card (and my personal favorite) with limitless combos. Within the simic guild itself, it can instantly make any creature targetable by your graft creatures (such as using Plaxcaster Frogling to give shroud to a creature thats about to be enchanted) and works especially well with the Vigean Graftmage to either add a +1/+1 counter to any creature for two mana or steal and use any activated ability in the same turn and continue to use that ability for each two additional mana you spend. Using eventide, Kraj can put a counter on the Gilder Bairn and in the following turns can then add 1 to and double the number of counters on any creature for only three mana and when all is said and done, Kraj is still untapped, able to use any ability that it has stolen. Lastly, I can't even begin to list the number of combos that can occur in two-headed giant.

I can see how this would be awesome in a graft deck, but outside of that sort of deck I'm not seeing the value. At 6 mana I can put a game ending card right into play, like flameblast dragon. This card seems more like a long term investment that can eventually combo into odd and cool abilities. It also only specifies activated abilities, so if your playing a deck that has to tap out, stealing abilities that you have to pay mana for will be draining on your mana reserves. Defintley has combo potential if nothing else.

This is the Commander in my favorite EDH deck. It leads to some very unexpected plays (like using Time Elemental and Kraj to return an opponent's creatures to their hand so your Singing Tree (with a +1/+1 counter) can get through for the kill.

I'm about 3 months into the game of magic and enjoying it. I see all the combos that have been mentioned and those are very good, but I was wondering how Experiment Kraj would combo into a rainbow colored ally deck? If you had a Kazuul Warlord out there putting +1/+1 counters on everything, Experiment Kraj could have 6 or 7 ally abilities that activate everytime an ally enters the battlefield. Everything from it being an extra Ondu Cleric, to adding extra +1/+1 counters on everyone, to being able to deal extra damage from using Murasa Pyromancer and Hagra Diabolist's Ability. Anyways, there are probably several glaring holes in my idea, please feel free to point them out. Thanks!

@matt252007

That wouldn't work, since Kraj gains activated abilities, not triggered abilities. Allies have triggered abilities.

An activated ability has a cost (e.g. tap, GU, etc.), a colon (:), then an effect (Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature, Gain 2 life, etc.)

How does Kraj work with the new Gideon Jura? Turn Gideon into a creature, give him a +1/+1 counter, and Kraj gets Gideon's activated abilities. Is there a ruling for this yet?

Actually Matt, that doesn't work at all. The Kraj only gets activated abilities. abilities that you want to take "when __ or another ally enters, etc." are triggered. You can only steal activated. So, for allies, your main options would be harabaz druid orsea gate loremaster. Sorry bud. Lurker, how could you miss something like that? You seem to have some form of grasp on the rules.

Have him get a mana ability. Find him an untap ability that costs less. Your board is now full of infinity infinities, you have infinite mana, and you can use any tap abilities Kraj has acquired to your heart's content. Kraj combos out so easily that its almost silly, and I love him for it.

Arglypuff: Kraj does get Gideon's activated abilities. However, Planeswalker abilities can only be cast at sorcery speed and only once per turn by the permanent that activates 'em. It'll therefore be slow. Basically, after Kraj gets Gideon's abilities...

You can use the +2 when he untaps. Creatures target opponent controls attack Kraj if able. Kraj isn't a Planeswalker or player, so they're _not_ able. They are therefore unaffected by the ability, but Kraj gets two loyalty counters anyway.

You can then use him as a Royal Assassin by removing those two loyalty counters next turn.

You can also use the 0 ability. I'm pretty sure this would make Kraj a 6/6 Legendary Human Soldier Ooze Mutant creature who can't take damage for the rest of the turn.

Kraj not being a Planeswalker, damage to him doesn't cause him to lose loyalty counters, unlike Gideon.

EDIT: lol proliferate, is there anything with which you don't combo?

Question: I came up with a combo that essentially chews up and spits out the rules of the game. Does this work?

1. HaveMycosynth Lattice, March of the Machines, and this out.
2. Play any planeswalker
3. The planeswalker is an artifact creature while also being a planeswalker
4. Put a +1/+1 counter on the planeswalker
5. Theoretically, Experiment Kraj now has all activated abilities of the planeswalker. However, rules pertaining to the use of planeswalker abilities only once per turn only apply to planeswalkers and (I may be wrong) do not cause the planeswalker to tap. Therefore, any + abilities on the planeswalker can be used an infinite amount of times by Experiment Kraj, putting an infinite number of loyalty counters on it.
6. Use Jace, the Mind Sculptor's ultimate ability twice, on the same turn, after unsummoning all of their creatures, followed by a Gideon Jura forced attack, followed by making all of your permanents indestructable with Elspeth, Knight Errant, then just burn them to death with several Chandra Nalaar ultimates.
7. YOU WIN
8. your opponent runs crying home about how the planeswalkers and the ooze all ganged up on you.

use in conjunction with Pili-Pala and Grand Architect for an infinite amount of +1/+1 counters on your creatures and use in a deck that has activated abilities type creatures making it so you have a creature that can constantly untap at a whim (using an infinite mana combo with Pili-Pala and grand architect) this will allow you to spam any activated ability which thus allows you to play all land cards in your library with Frontier Guide and give it reach with Wall of Tanglecord then play all your creatures with elvish piper and decide to play Presence of Gond on him and spam elf warriors in an elf deck or play godtoucher and for the rest of your game all dmg is prevented to all your creatures maybe play it on kithkin daggerdare for a super buff attacking creature (of course just placing counters would work as well...) the possibilities are endless...

EDIT: I just realized you cand have some equipment with only an activated ability equipped to 2 creatures (in a way) with this... you equip the artifact to a creature with a +1/+1 counter and Experiment Kraj will gain the ability as well...

To frommerman:

That is an excellent idea at its core, but unfortunately, like many other ideas, has at least one flaw. First off, the exact wording of rule 606.3 prevents that from instantaneous victory over the course of one turn, as piglet has already pointed out. This may not seem so bad: after all, you still have a good source of planeswalker abilities, but there's one more little problem. The problem? Mycosynth Lattice and March of the Machines, if my limited understanding is correct, together cause all lands to automatically be destroyed as a state-based action due to being creatures with 0 toughness.

To justicarphaeton:

Actually, your rebuttal of Kirbster's idea is flawed. Kraj will gain the activated equip ability and will not become an equipment himself. He will not, however, gain any static ability that states "Equipped creature gains...," therefore, equipping Kraj to himself, though incredibly hilarious, achieves nothing unless the equipment animated is chosen very carefully. Demonspine Whip, for example, would be a good choice.

And finally, a thought of my own: If all your lands became creatures capable of self-sufficiency, this thing could gain all of those different mana abilities, because they're activated, too. Your opponent plays Exotic Orchard? Well, you've got one too. And this one's not a land, so (s)he can't tap theirs to produce their own mana types, either.

Actually, you may be right about the + abilities... I don't think you need to have counters in order to add more. then once you put a few, you could remove them, the Kraj would survive even if you took all of them, then keep adding more. Quite diabolical...

@RuscoJames your planeswalker would still be a planeswalker, just it would also be an artifact and a creature. And the Kraj would not be a planeswalker, but it would have loyalty abilities, but unlike frommerman says, those rules apply to any permanent with loyalty abilities, so you can only use one per turn. However, many of the planeswalker drawbacks could be circumvented, such as: Kraj couldn't be attacked, Kraj wouldn't lose counters due to damage, people can't redirect damage from you to your Kraj, he wouldn't die due to 0 loyalty. The only drawback is that he starts at 0 loyalty, so it takes longer to build him up, but if you have some proliferate and Gilder Bairn It shouldn't take any time at all. And as for what method to make your planeswalker a creature, I'd suggest using Liquidmetal Coating instead of Mycosynth Lattice because it wont kill your lands. This deck seems VERY fun and it's defiantly one of the top 5 that I want to make right now.

Personally, I prefer to go for Argothian Elder and Morphling, for infinite mana, infinite untappings of Kraj, and infinite counters on all my creatures. Alternately, you could use Bloom Tender instead of Argothian Elder, but that only gives you infinite Green, not Blue, or Horseshoe Crab instead of Morphling, but then you don't get Morphling's other juicy abilities.

Of course, if you also have Momir Vig, Simic Visionary out (which is usually how I assemble the combo to begin with), you can also pretty much cast your entire library with this combo.

UsagiYojimbo

@MotleyJu:
Yes and yes, the text on Quicksilver Elemental is actually reminder text, not rules text.

201.4b If an ability of an object refers to that object by name, and an object with a different name
gains that ability, each instance of the first name in the gained ability that refers to the first
object by name should be treated as the second name.

This, unfortunately, means you cannot use Kraj to make a 5/5 Basking Rootwalla. But it opens more doors than it closes I'm sure.

As stated, the rules says "permanent", which includes Kraj. On the other hand, Mirror Gallery and Splinter Twin allows you to absolutely spam the living heck out of any + and 0 abilities. In this case, Chandra Nalaar or Sorin Markov, your choice. Unless your opponent(s) have some kind of removal to stop this (which is rather likely), you win.

Mirror/Twin-free alternative, Elvish Aberration and Gilder Bairn for counter hillarity. Just smash your opponent with all your walker's ultimates or an infinite/infinite Invisible Stalker with a Butcher's Cleaver.

a question with kraj's ability, I plan on useing this in EDH/commander
have in play kraj with freed from the real, put Myr Galvanizer into play and give +1/+1 to it from kraj.
then give galvanizer haste, use other myr for X of every color that the commander will allow into pool
use Myr Galvanizer, to untap all other myr, use blue from the pool to untap kraj and then tap all mana myrs again, then use the kraj/galvanizer ability to untap all tapped myrs including myr galvanizer..
this I am thinking should net infinite mana....of every color that the commander will allow.

Actually, every comment involving planeswalkers is wrong (I think). The addition or subtraction of loyalty counters is part of the cost of the ability, and the cost cannot be paid, because the rules state that only permanents with the planeswalker type can have loyalty counters. Not sure how this works with abilities that cost 0 loyalty.
adrian.malacoda
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
CR 606.2 states that "Normally, only planeswalkers have loyalty abilities" but elsewhere the rules make references to "permanents" having loyalty abilities. 606.6 states that "The cost to activate a loyalty ability of a permanent is to put on or remove from that permanent a certain number of loyalty counters, as shown by the loyalty symbol in the ability's cost" which would imply that any kind of permanent can have loyalty counters. However, CR 306.5 states "Loyalty is a characteristic only planeswalkers have." My interpretation of this is that loyalty as a characteristic is planeswalkers-only but loyalty counters can be on any kind of permanent.. much like power and toughness is a characteristic only creatures have but any kind of permanent can have +1/+1 counters (see Llanowar Reborn).
Tinno
★★★★☆ (4.5/5.0) (6 votes)
@Frommerman

You need to read those rules again :P

606.2. An activated ability with a loyalty symbol in its cost is a loyalty ability. Normally, only planeswalkers have loyalty abilities.

606.3. A player may activate a loyalty ability of a permanent he or she controls any time he or she has priority and the stack is empty during a main phase of his or her turn, but only if no player has previously activated a loyalty ability of that permanent that turn.

Highlighted the important parts :)

This is found under the section of Loyalty abilities, see it's not about whether it's a planeswalker or not, the loyalty abilities themselves have the clause that you can't use it more than once per turn, this is stated in the rules, so you'd be able to use the abilities, but only once per turn as it's still a loyalty ability even though it's not a planeswalker using it.

I use this guy in a EDH deck, him obviously being the commander. Say I want to nab, I dunno, Viridian Joiner's ability. The ability Kraj gets from Joiner is "Tap: Add for equal to Viridian Joiner's power." Does the ability still only pertain exclusively to Viridian Joiner? Or does it change to be Kraj's ability? A ton of cards with activated abilities I'd like to steal like Feral Hydra, Pentavus, etc. always say their own names in their activated abilities.

I'm just wondering.

see rulings of Dark Impostor:

"If an activated ability of a card in exile references the card it's printed on by name, treat Dark Impostor's version of that ability as though it referenced Dark Impostor by name instead. For example, if Marrow Bats (which says "Pay 4 life: Regenerate Marrow Bats") is exiled with Dark Impostor, Dark Impostor has the ability "Pay 4 life: Regenerate Dark Impostor.""

i guess the same would be true for Experiment Kraj

If you use mycosynth lattice and march of the machines Experiment Kraj can have the loyalty abilities of one of each type of planeswalker.

Mycosynth Lattice makes them all Artifact Planeswalkers
March of Machine makes them all Artifact Creature Planeswalkers

Note that this also works with enchanted evening + Opalescence

Just for reference, here are some rules about loyalty abilities that are worth looking at. Unless I put it in quotes, I am paraphrasing or making a point about that rule. If you are going to be doing crazy convoluted combos, do a little research and make sure it works.

112.5 The 1/turn loyalty ability rule. It applies to permanents, not just planeswalkers
119.3c Damage removing loyalty counters only applies to planeswalkers
209.2 The definition of a loyalty abilities specifies that it is an activated ability with a loyalty symbol in it's cost
306.5 Some people get confused by this one, Kraj does not have the loyalty characteristic, but he can have loyalty counters.
306.9 The Loyalty characteristic is for determining when the planeswalker should be sent to the graveyard
606.4. "The cost to activate a loyalty ability of a permanent is to put on or remove from that permanent a certain number of loyalty counters, as shown by the loyalty symbol in the ability’s cost."(Note that this rule says nothing about the loyalty characteristic.)
606.5. "A loyalty ability with a negative loyalty cost can’t be activated unless the permanent has at least that many loyalty counters on it."

TLDR
Kraj can use a loyalty ability once per turn
Adding or removing loyalty counters is the cost of the ability
You have to have loyalty counters before you can remove them

My new musings on Experiment Kraj are that he Looks Like Ivan Ooze and Gatherer needs like a bazillion more Ivan Ooze related comments about him. ^_^

THE BELOW INFORMATION IS SO FAR INACCURATE
it's horribly complicated, not practical for a normal game, but it works. Blame the Simic guild, because Experiment Kraj really can do this. Sorin, Lord of Innistrad is vital, because without his ability to REANIMATE Planeswalkers, you WOULD be limited by a '1 per turn' activation issue. There is a very, very, very good reason that Sorin's wording says 'other' planeswalkers. Wizards knows that if Sorin ever got targeted by his own Ultimate, all hell breaks loose. It's to try to stop Mad Johnnies from pulling this kind of bullcrap. The first iteration involved a subcombo with Tezzeret the Seeker because I thought I needed it. The whole point of the Tezzeret bit was to get a +1/+1 counter on Sorin, allowing Kraj to copy Sorin's ability. There are better ways to get a +1/+1 counter on Sorin, though. I'm not listing them, find them yourself.

I'm going to go through this 1 step at a time.

1. Mycosynth Lattice makes your stuff into artifacts. This makes your Planeswalkers artifacts.
2. March of the Machines makes your artifacts into creatures. This makes your Planeswalkers creatures.
3. Experiment Kraj can use any creature's ability if they have a +1/+1 counter on them. You need a repeatable way to get a +1/+1 counter on Sorin so that Kraj can copy his ability. Any combo that nets you +1/+1 counters will do, and my previous suggestion about Tezzeret untapping Kraj to use Kraj's counter-granting ability, while I think it would work, is probably not efficient.
4. RECAP:
Your Board State: Assume you have found a repeatable way to give Sorin a +1/+1 counter every time he comes back after Kraj targets Sorin himself with Sorin's Ultimate. This would mean that Sorin is an eligible target for Kraj's ability once again. Sorin is ready. Is Kraj?

The Million Dollar Question is: Can Kraj use as many Loyalty abilities as he wants without paying Loyalty costs, or not? I was counting that any Loyalty ability the Planeswalker in question could use, Kraj could use for free. I could be wrong about that, but Fate Transfer is another option to give Kraj Loyalty. But this causes the Planeswalker you Fate Transfer to die, with no chance of reanimation!

You could still use one PW as a sacrifical lamb so that it enables the rest of the absurd combo to go off without a hitch though. After you have gotten any Loyalty counters on Kraj in any way, any Proliferate combo will work to overload him. Proliferate + Doubling Season combos, which have already been found for 'normal' going infinite with Walkers, will give you all the Loyalty counters you need to do the rest of what I'm saying. There might be other ways to get Loyalty on Kraj. I don't know about them, though.

5. So, we do in fact, have a way to repeatably use Kraj to use Sorin's ability to steal the opponents' Planeswalkers, reanimate them, and use their abilities. If you have 2 Doubling Seasons out beforehand, every Planeswalker would enter the battlefield with more than enough Loyalty to immediately go Ultimate with Loyalty to spare. Instead of activating them all at once, you do it in batteries of 3:

a. Kraj uses Sorin's Ultimate. Kraj uses Sorin's Ultimate. REPEAT AFTER ME, IF YOU CAN GET KRAJ TO USE SORIN'S ULTIMATE TARGETING SORIN HIMSELF, THIS COMBO WORKS.
Kraj targets Sorin and 2 others, to make sure you keep destroying and bringing back Planeswalkers- this destroy/reanimate combo is what allows you to go infinite- each Planeswalker that returns from the Graveyard allows you to use it's power again.
b. and c. the other Walkers you target using Sorin's ability. You can only get a Walker to go infinite like this if they are a Walker that is about to be Reanimated by Sorin's ability.

Now we have two possibilities:
6a. Kraj doesn't need to pay loyalty, this all works just as I said the first time.
6b. Kraj DOES need to pay loyalty, in which case you need to find a way to loop Contagion Clasp or some other Proliferator/or Doubling Season effect, in such a way to keep replenishing Kraj's Loyalty. I believe that the popularity of Infect will find searching for Proliferate Combos to be an easy task.

7. Kraj can keep using Sorin's Ultimate all Day and all Night to keep refreshing your Planeswalkers, three at a time. Sorin will always be one of the three, you change out the other two in turns until you've gotten to use everyone you want to use.

Sorin, Lord of Innistrad is indeed an infinite combo with himself (and some other stuff), and this infinite combo in turn has a ripple effect that allows you to go infinite with all other Planeswalkers, even going Infinite on Ultimates if you add Doubling Seasons to the mix.
Planeswalker Abilities are activated. Kraj's errata doesn't clarify whether you can do 6a or if you have to 6b.
DOESNT WORK.

would Experiment Krage be able to use dark imposter's ability to exile an opponents dark imposter, then keep the dark imposter's ability?
As the dark imposter will no longer have a +1/+1 counter on it it wouldn't be experiment kraj's ability that gave experiment kraj the ability but the dark imposters own...?

So... hypothetically speaking..
if you did March of the Machines, with two Isochron Scepters, one set with cloudshift, and the other set with fate transfer....
and you had Tezzeret the Seeker, with a +1 on him, and I dunno, your choice of infinite mana source on the field (myr galvanizers and palladium Myr maybe?)
could you then acquire infinite loyalty counters, and fate transfer them over (when you're done blinking Kraj) to another 'planeswalker' you have on the field (provided for god knows what reason your opponent hasnt managed to smash, counter, or otherwise remove one of the pieces of this ridiculous scheme) like.. say... just to be unimaginative... Gideon, Champion of Justice, and swing for infinite damage? (well, X damage, since Im told you must choose a real number)

@beefrocks Mana abilities (of lands) are mana abilities, not activated abilities, And actually Justicarphaeton's rebuttal is correct, an Artifact Creature Equipment cannont be equipped to a creature however it can use the equip ability but the ability won't do anything. (See March of Machines and check it's rulings)

Oh and I feel I should mention Devoted druid and Gilder Bairn as I think it is the easiest infinite mana combo, or maybe Gilder Bairn and Elvish Aberration

Also, are loyalty abilities activated abilities?

As an EDH general I prefer Momir Vig as a general because you can tutor up Kraj and all the combo pieces you want....

All this talk of infinites, how come anyone hasn't mentioned Gyre Sage and Gilder Bairn? Infinite green mana and +1/+1 counter generation.

You may not be able to turn Kraj into equipment, but if he puts a counter on any Licid he can turn into an enchantment. This makes him very difficult to kill! Unfortunately the resulting Kraj enchantment does nothing thanks to errata making the actual property of the enchantment static on the licid, but it's still a very handy trick.

You know whats awesome for mana ramp? taking Forgotten Ancient and Gyre Sage and Etched Champion with Mycrosynth Lattice on the battle field..... all permanents are now artifacts, Kraj is immune to all colors, gains a +1/+1 when ever a spell so played and can tap for large amounts of mana.

@ Charles_Prefect
Mana abilities are any activated ability that grants you mana, not just abilities from lands. They're still activated abilities. If in doubt, look at the old, old lands - their text boxes actually contain "Tap: Add (x) to your mana pool", or in some cases "Tap to add", depending on how old they are.

@ I_Cheesus
Dark Imposter's second ability isn't activated, so it never would have been present on Experiment Kraj. Exiling Dark Imposter with Experiment Kraj would just exile the Imposter and give Kraj a counter, nothing more.

@ Brastus
Your scheme is exceedingly complex, but let's say you've got the pieces out... The order would be "+1: Untap up to two target artifacts" on Kraj, Fate Transfer that counter to anywhere, Cloudshift on Kraj who enters untapped and is considered a new permanent. +1 to untap both Scepters, Fate Transfer, Cloudshift... I think that you've successfully created an infinite Loyalty Ability scenario. You could activate the ultimate of any number of Planeswalkers this way, provided no one managed to disrupt the combo. You could also swing with an arbitrarily large Gideon, Champion of Justice, as you suggest, though unless you give it trample, it's probably just going to get chump blocked. Compared to simply producing infinite Myr tokens, this is a rather difficult way to use the infinite mana produced by the Galvanizers and Palladium.

I love this creature. When Ravnica came out (The first block) we all picked guilds and I chose simic. I loved to give him silly combinations of abilities, but a friend of mine came up with a combo we thought was hilarious for some reason. Kraj + Mischievous Quanar. Years before Ixidron would show up and flip all creatures helplessly on their backs, Kraj could turn himself into a helpless 2/2 for no appearent reason. This truely amused us quite a bit.

Any combo is fun for me, whether is it good or actually negative. Other strange or useless Kraj cards: Figure of Destiny lets you turn kraj into a spirit avatar for some reason. Any Licid as mentioned by others make him a useless enchantment. Any card with Grandeur Interacts strangely, I suppose it basically lets you discard Krajes for the same effect. (Linessa, Zephyr Mage would be scary with 6 grandeur targets in the deck. So would Tarox Bladewing) Bloodshot trainee makes him quite the cannon. Fleshwrither lets you pay 3 to trade kraj for any other 6 coster. Lots of odd interactions with kraj.

Infinite Mana - This + Gyre Sage, Simic Ragworm.....

Tap to chuck a few counters onto himself, or either of the other two...

When all 3 have at least 1 counter, you get unlimited Forest - Tap Kraj (copying Sage's ability), you get 1 forest mana for each counters, Untap using Ragworm's ability and rinse and repeat... If you have Vorel of the Hull Clade, you can double his counters each turn.... or just keep pumping him up with his own ability...

NOW, if you have Gilder Bairn with Paradise Mantle attached and Training Ground.. attach Paradise Mantle to Gilder Bairn, tap for an Island, use the Island to untap Kraj, tap Kraj for more Forest mana... Untap Gilder Bairn, double counters on Kraj, tap again for Island mana and rinse and repeast....

You now officially have unlimited Forest/Island mana :D

So I'm building a deck based around Experiment Kraj and a combo that I saw someone post... I'm gonna have lots of fun with it. Basically, throw out a Vorel and a Gilder Bairn to give Experiment Kraj an endless tap combo (although it does rely on your mana). Things get fun once you throw out an Azor's Elocutors, and some Ludevic's Test Subjects can be easily transformed into 13/13 tramplers. What's even better is when you quickly level up your Lighthouse Chronologist. Planeswalkers can also be targeted, but only on Kraj's untap.

TL;DR, get some cheap cards out along with Kraj and you'll have a quasi-infinite counter-combo, which can lead to a quick win with Azor's Elocutors. Can't wait to finish building this deck.

Have fun trying to play a planeswalker with 0 lands on the board because you just destroyed them with Mycosynth+March of the machines combo.
