I was so happy when it turned out that this previewed art wound up being on this awesome creature.

An effectively costed creature that nets some great card advantage while going into any deck because of no color restrictions? How can you not like this? Find a way to sac it then bring it back, and you'll be in the lead in no time.

Awesome. Perfect. Now it even has a relevant creature type! This card is perfect in every way, a perfect storm of ramp, draw, and a Grizzly Bear for any color.

great reprint with a disappointing art. this card helps you with both the card disadvantage (if you start first) and the land (if you started last). really good. also combine with smallpox.

Damn, now I have to buy the better-looking copies of this card for each of my EDH decks. Now it's not just a card you want to see in your hand, it's a card you just want to see.

Can be improved by the Splicer family; I'll put my two old copy of it from Mirrodin in my four color Precursor Golem deck, where the "search land" will be very useful. Multicolored card has never be reprinted in the Core set... (http://www.wizards.com/Default.asp?x=sideboard/feature/20030910a), so it's a chance that this one has been colorless...

{4} drop in golem tribal, maybe? Heck, {4} drop in anything this guy is amazing. Also use it with Mimic Vat and a sacrifice outlet for some serious ramp and card draw potential, allowing you to pull a basic land out of your deck at instant speed and draw a card (plus whatever effects you may get from the sacrifice effect.)

This guy + Birthing Pod. For 5 mana and 2 life (or 6 mana) you get:

1. Rampant Growth
2. Evermind
3. A 5CMC creature of your choosing

So with the 2 cards you get +2 card advantage, and whatever 5 CMC creature you've decided to include in your deck. That's just beautiful right there.

Huh, still dont see how this is that good. I guess I just am not pro yet. Every time I drew it, I thought, **** not this again, mana ramp for 4 mana! WTF is this! Imma just play another Palladium Myr, thank you very much. Traded it for an etched sentinel and an hour of reckoning, and have yet to miss it. Also, the person I traded it to hated the new art and would murder for a copy with the old art. Heh.
CrimsonFury82
★★☆☆☆ (2.8/5.0) (2 votes)
@SniperJolly

For 4 you get a colourless chump blocker, land ramp and a cantrip. Each of those individual is usually worth 2 mana. The fact it is colourless is even better, it can go in any deck and can be cast regardless which colour you are in need of.

When combo'ed with recursion cards like Mimic Vat it becomes amazing.

I miss the sad robot. I will never actually play with the M12 printing as long as the Mirrodin one exists. That aside, this was an amazing card even before strange golem shenanigans became popular in Scars block. Colorless Rampant Growth, and a slowtripping bear? If you make a trade with the Simulacrum, you'll be up 2 cards!

And the fact that he's an artifact creature also means he's good for decks like Steel Artifact, where he can get huge alongside an unchecked Steel Overseer, he can beat face with Tempered Steel, and even if a couple of your Simulacrums die to a board sweeper, you're still up in card advantage. Plus, if he doesn't die right away, he still beats for 2, which is not an insignificant number by any means. I shouldn't have to convince you to play this card; he's a one-man show.

I've said this about many other cards in the past, but I really don't think this guy has a whole lot of potential unless you 1.) Run 4, and 2.) Have some way of powering him up, like say Tempered Steel for example.

Otherwise, one extra land (basic, and in tapped) and one extra card (if he dies) for 4, and only a 2/2 creature? It looks really good on paper but I think, in practice, there's better things you can do with 4 mana. In this set even. See Quicksilver Amulet. Even if you're just casting it, it's a lot more threatening. If you're using it, well, you can throw down something a lot more effective for the same amount of mana. I'm not saying this is bad, not at all. I just don't see what the 4.5 avg is all about.

Oh yeah, and the art is GORGEOUS!!! O_O

To those that underestimate this card: it is meant to be recurred. This reprint makes my mono white Emeria, the Sky Ruin deck standard for a very short time. Most of the deck is just this, Kor Cartographer, Pilgrim's Eye, and board wipes. I just sit there wiping threats until I have Emeria active, then replay my Simulacrums and chump/wipe until I have a game finisher. Nothing like a Day of Judgment that also draws you 3 cards, and since you have been fetching lands all game you have the mana to then drop an Elspeth/Gideon and/or your favorite bomb on a clean board.

I look at him like a colorless Ondu Giant that trades 2 toughness for card draw cantrip on death.

you guys are all obsessed with card advantage...at the end of the day it's still a 2/2 for four mana...go ahead, rate my comment down, I don't care, but you know it's the truth, card advantage doesn't win games.

If you 're playing control, it does. And in this case, the body's size is highly irrelevant, 'cause you'll only need it to chump block a fatty, and buy yourself a turn. And get an extra card.

This is a feel-good rare.

It has nothing bad with it, and it isn't too threatening or overpowered like something like Garruk's Horde (not that it's super-powerful), but it's not too cheap-costing that it is broken.

it is also one of those cards like Keldon Marauders that makes the opponent not want to block it, because if they did, then they'd be helping you.

The added bonus is that this card is an artifact, therefore, it could be put anywhere. It is so versatile and efficient in its work that if you don't have one, then you should at least try to get a few boosters and try your luck.

Buying it individually isn't worth the 13 or so dollars, not because it isn't worth that, but because it's just a rare: 1 of your cards in a booster could be one of 68 rares/mythics, and you get the bonus of the commons and uncommons, as well as the lucky chance of getting a foil card.

Man, i love spending money on Boosters.

Anyone who underestimates this guy hasn't watched the look on someone's face as they decide whether or not to attack, knowing that at best you'll be getting a card out of the bargain, and at worst they'll be losing a creature AND you'll be getting a card out of the bargain.
Nagoragama
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
This card is card advantage incarnate. It comes into play, tutoring for a land, it attacks for 2 damage, maybe they block and trade a creature, you draw a card. Its often a 3 for 1, always a 2 for 1. Try actually playing with it and you'll see why it's so good.

@Arachibutyrophobia HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Best joke I've heard in years.

From a flavor perspective, I prefer the old art, being that it was a simulacrum of the player who created the Forest Folk card that became this. For artistic reasons, I prefer this version. Other than the distinctively non-human head, it's very Esper-like in its build. For comparison, see Master Transmuter.

Although I do appreciate the new art (this one doesn't remind me of the "Tin Man" from Wizard of Oz like the last one), does anybody else think it's kind of wrong that the Invitational cards have been getting new art? I mean, if the person that wins the Invitational comes up with such a useful card that it gets reprinted, it would seem like they should get their face on all printings of it instead of just the first.

With that said, I do like the art for this version much better.

So am I the only one that gets chills JUST by looking at this card's new artwork? The abilities are great too and I love the throwback, but every time I see my playset I just am in awe at the beauty of it.

5/5

Best part, the whole "Dies to Doom Blade" is a positive for this! You essentially have 4 mana snag you a draw, a land, and what might as well be a discard on your opponent's part, IN ANY COLOR. And that's a pretty sweet deal.

@Arachibutyrophobia-or-whatever-the-heck-your-name-is Card Advantage does win games moron. Honestly. One free land in say a deck with heavy costs goes a long way. How long have you been playing this game because I already know this and I've only been playing for a year and a half.

I prefer the new art, and also the new art for meddling mage. Sorry, but magic players aren't exactly known for their handsomeness (myself excluded of course). I'll always prefer a hot chick wrapped in flames (or in this case, a stylish golem) over some dude that you know just ate more than a few donuts before drinking something that really shouldn't be that weird green color.

That art work is sick. I pulled one of these, somehow not realizing the advantages it can give you. I played around with it though and realized how good this card can help any color deck ramp up a little. I have a blue/white splicer deck, this guy goes in awesome because he gets all the bonuses from Blade Splicer, Master Splicer, and Wing Splicer. I'm running Phantasmal Image in there as well. The draw back of Phantasmal Image (Having to sac it) is negated by the fact that if it's a copy of Solemn I get to draw a card :)

One of the most feel-good cards in EDH. No one ever complains about this guy's power level, even though he's in basically every EDH deck.

EDH decks want 3 very broad/general things; ramp, card draw/tutoring, and removal/control elements. It ramps. It gives a card draw. And because of the card draw it is a pseudo ghostly prison, because unless someone is trying to quickly kill your face they aren't going to attack into this so you get to block and kill this guy and draw a card. It's also colorless so any deck has the potential to play it.

(It's also funny with ninjutsu, because when this attacks no one bothers to block it because they don't want to kill it and give you a card).

This card would be so much better if the second ability read "when Solemn Simulacrum leaves the battlefield..." so that flickering gave you both bonuses...

I love reading the derpy, low-rated comments on this card. The people who underestimate this card don't understand how Hell's Caretaker works. Or Tinker. Or the color pie.
If you get to draw a card from paying the sacrifice cost, You're already ahead.
If you get to draw a card in Red, land ramp in Blue or do BOTH in White, you're also ahead.

Look at it this way:

something eldrazi sounding {4}

Sorcery
Search your library for a basic land card and put it onto the battlefield tapped.
Put a 2/2 Golem Creature token onto the battlefield. Draw a card.

There's actually a lot of "blink" that uses the graveyard instead of exile. As long as you have a way to kill it (combat, a sac outlet, etc.), you can trigger both effects with quite a few cards. My personal favorite is Undying Evil, but there's also Angelic Renewal, Cauldron Haze, Faith's Reward, Graceful Reprieve (the most vanilla of them all), and a lot more. Don't forget the new (and awesome) Rescue from the Underworld either.
