I don't see why is rating for this card so low... in naya deck with proper mana acceleration (like mine) it comes to play in 4th turn...

I think this card would be awesome with Doubling Season. Running a playset would get you 16 8/8 tokens for one tap.

need something to do with all your godsire tokens?

how about a talk with my friend Brion Stoutarm, MVP pitcher for Lorwyn and powerful enough to pick up even a godsire spawn and toss it at an opponent hard, oh and dont forget Brion Stoutarm has lifelink, yes that will be a giant beast landing on your head and I will gain 8 life, thank you

also Brion fits right into the mana, 2RW, and is 1 short of Naya's golden standard (5 power)

I like this card. Its powerful, flavorful, and has a very fun ability. The problem with this guy is that it has almost no protection from removal. Yes while it is true that Godsire can hit the table as early as fourth turn with the right mana acceleration it won't be any fun to watch him die to generic cheap removal like Terminate, Path to Exile, Terror, and Oblivion Ring. My solution would be to play Shield of the Oversoul, Spearbreaker Behemoth or something to keep him from getting killed and or play an effect that can combo with his ability to make as many tokens as possible.

I've definitely got to find 3 more of these to make a playset. Seems like a worthwhile card to have some fun with.

With Vengeful Rebirth, removal just got a whole lot harder.
It comes back and hits for 8 direct to player doing so...

In my opinion it's the best of the "shard overlord" cycle. (Prince of Thralls, etc.)

It's pretty much overkill!

Throw him a Behemoth Sledge and put that target on your forehead (in multiplayer), anyone who sees this hit the table will either remove it or get really ***ed because they cant. The Timmy in me loves this card and the Johnny in me wants to use it forever.

I cant wait to try Naya with some Lurking Predators I only have one at the moment though :/

Put in a deck with some proper mana acceleration, Hamletback Goliath turn 4, this turn 5. As has been said, also works fantastically well with Brion Stoutarm and Doubling Season. Actually, seems to work better with cards of its own colours than any of the other 8 mana fatties from Shards... Love it.

Whats really interesting about naya beasts is they are huge, and powerful, but none of them are legendary. You could stack your deck with 4 of these if you wanted to. Elvish piper would help put it on the field, but other than that paying 8 mana for any creature is to high, as you would almost never be able to put into play. It has no protection from removal, and so it dies to practically everything. Godsire is effectivley a huge gamble, if your opponent has no removal making 8/8's every turn is almost sure to make you win, even if they do draw their removal a few turns later having put 3 - 4, 8/8 creatures into play is a game win; but if they do draw it and simply remove the godsire, then it's a waste of 8 mana. Vines of the vastwood would probably be the best answer to that problem. Generally speaking however, it's unwise to play with a high cost creature with no form of anti removal, as drawing it in your first hand means its practically unplayable for almost the whole game, allowing your opponent to build up more momentum than one giant creature will fix. Other anti removal choices are whispersilk cloak, shielding plax, privileged position, diplomatic immunity, paleoloth with other 5/5's, and greater auramancy if you can enchant it. Godsire is also meant to be played with lieges in my opinion, as it's rare for any creature to make tokens that are 3 colors, such as balefire liege. Mayael's aria makes a great contribution to that combo, because your 8/8 comes into play as a 10/10 that grants 10 life gain every upkeep. Rage reflection, where ancients tread, and primal rage also totally nuts cards for godsire, along with runes of the deus and shield of the oversoul. Paleoloth and godsire allow you to return a creature from your graveyard to your hand per turn.

@the brion stoutarm idea, ok.. so that's an interesting choice, but if I have 8 mana already I could titanic ultimatum, and keep my tokens, and do much more damage and still gain a lot of life, not that my opponent is likely to survive after I have more than 2 - 3 8/8's in play. Also, it's fun to imagine all the weird doubling season combos to amuse johnny's with, but your never going to get out multiple doubling season's and a godsire at the same time, maybe like once in 100 games.

Vigilance seems really random for a big beastie like this, but it makes sense when considered in conjunction with his ability. I only wish he had trample, though.

CMC of eight for an 8/8 with VIGILANCE and a tap ability that allows you to generate more 8/8 creatures? Heh, a most worth while creature! Terrifing when not play mono white (or some black removal)! I give it 5/5 cause I see it as being a threatning card and can't see a thing wrong with it!!

I wouldn't/wont play it cause first of all I hate playing multicolored decks and when/if I do it only goes as far as duel (except with a scarecrow deck of mine, but it's mostly artifact creatures so I don't view it as a multicolored deck myself) colored decks.
BUT I don't/ wont judge a card based on whether I do or don't play a card lol.
Just glad I don't have to deal with this beast ever lol.

@Donovan_Fabian (11/13/2009 12:35:08 AM)

I give YOU five stars too. You speak sense and don't dismiss the card's potential for usefullness as many do-- it's annoying. And I totally agree with you.
Almost be neat if it had BLACK in it's cost though; would give it protection from most black removal! All the cheap stuff for black minus Unmake at any rate lol.
That's the problem with black removal, most of it wont touch black creatures or will only work on green and/or white creatures....

This card is def. one of the top cards of shards. With (Mayael the Anima, Elvish Piper, Dramatic Entrance or Dragon Arch) this guy can prove very dominent. Throw a Shield of the Oversoul on him and watch your opponents run !!

Attack Phase : Attack with Godsire.
Main Phase 2 : Tap Godsire for his ability.

You will be swinging for 8 and still geting an 8/8, which can then block when you end your turn.
Oh, and this is the largest creature (both in power and toughness) that has vigilance.
I thought that was worth mentioning.

Imo, this is the second strongest of the set:

1. Prince of Thralls (in grixis, everything dies, and this allows you to control it unless your opponent is willing to pay 2 life in addition to taking a beating by this guy every turn, thus sacing a creature to stop it. He's also immune to red and most black removal.)
2. Godsire (Who doesn't want an 8/8 fattie that can generate another 8/8 even after swinging? Vulnerable to any non-red removal though.)
3. Hellkite Overlord (Very powerful, immediate 8 WITH TRAMPLE the turn he comes out. Can regenerate, making him hard for most to kill him, and he has firebreathing which makes him a force to be reckon with.)
4. Sphinx Sovereign (A bit of life gain, only a 6/6 though, likely to die at some point while attacking. Vulnerable to red (double bolt, maybe artifact removal), green (flying and artifact removal), and white, but practically double immune to black (artifact AND black)
5. Empyrial Archangel (Horrible ability, who wants a pariah for 8 mana? Its a 5/8, sure it has shroud, but if your opponent is strong enough they can easily hit you for 8 and kill it. It would be better without that ability and maybe double exalted instead.)

Intruder Alarm. Have a {R} open for something like Burst of Speed and you're in business guys.

For some strange reason I prefer Godsire over Hellkite Overlord. Hellkite is a big, fun dragon, the problem is his playability. In all formats he's in, Hellkite Overlord is incredibly vulnerable. I'd rather he had persist than regenerate, but the form of removal he's most vulnerable is exile removal, and that is not cool.

Godsire, while sharing some of the vulnerability to removal with Hellkite Overlord, also produces tokens which are a pest to remove. With Godsire, you're more likely to regain the card advantage you lost if you tutored him out with Behemoth's Herald than the identical situation with Hellkite Overlord.

Also, if you're looking to stomp someone really fast, Bloodthorn Taunter is the format equivalent of Lightning Greaves for fatties. I swear by her in my deck that uses Sarkhan the Mad for token generation, as well as for creatures like Hoard-Smelter Dragon, Steel Hellkite, and Rapacious One.

I wonder where the break in the name goes. Is it God Sire, meaning the parent of a god, or Gods Ire, meaning the wrath of the Gods?

Godsire+Isochron Scepter with Vitalize, +Toymaker, + Joraga Treespeaker at level 1 or higher = Infinite 8/8's

clear instant

sacrifice 7 life, 7 cards, and 7 permanents. you win the game

(the 'god' card is the only 'clear' card ever invented in magic. the cards borders are cardboard but the rest is clear so that it can be seen before it is drawn.)

This card is not good at all, hi mana cost, what are you gonna use Behemoth Herald? Naya is supposed to be aggresive, not sacrificing 3 creatures and paying 3 to get this thing out...What if you're versing weenie aggressive, hard casting this guy will be impossible, they'll kill you before that happens. Using The Herald won't help you win either, you have to sacrifice a mass amount of creatures and pay 3? The weenie player will chump it until it can stop it. While you're sitting there making one token a turn and bashing for an unsuccessful 8 damage. The weenie deck can play more creatures faster than your deck and are gettting more damage over time until theydraw a path to exile or something. Bad card.

So I was thinking: in horse breeding (and I assume this applies to other types of breeding too) the male parent is called the sire and the female is called the dam. This would mean that, if the Godsire in fact has a mate, it would be called...

Well played, Wizards. Well played. :-)

The only way to make this card cooler would have been to make the tokens copies of itself. The card's not legendary, so there have to be more, and it would have been super cool for casual while still not broken for constructed.

Stop repeatedly using the "dies to removal" and "costs too much arguments" yes he has high CMC but he's also in the best colours to ramp up to it, yes he dies to removal but so do all the other fatties you've thrown out over the past couple of turns as 5, 6 and 7 drops. When he lands there are no guarantees your opponent will have any removal or counterspells left after dealing with the nasties you've already tried to hit them with. And then every turn afterwards he gets to make another dude AFTER you've swung with an 8/8 or even whole swinging with him if they try to get rid of him whilst you're attacking. If they don't have the removal the TURN you play him he replaces himself and then you have the card advantage even if they remove him.

Well, think about it. Big creatures that dont trample, flavor wise thats because they focus all the attention on the little bugger blocking it. Smashing it to bits and playing with its food. Also they might be very slow moving too.
