Alright stupid combo time. Scythe of the Wretched equipped to Bloodshot Trainee or Kamahl, Pit Fighter targeting a 1/1 weenie of yours equipped with Deathrender. Deathrender's effect goes off and you can put any big creature of choice into play. Yes I know its complicated, but its fun.

I like stacking up the +1/+1s on my Ashling, the Pilgrim, or Jaya Ballard, Task Mage for those of you that don't like waiting, and pop it to kill everything and then have everything come back into play under my control, noted I had to call wizards help in the middle of a game to get my opponent to beleive that Ashling not only survived her own detonation, but came back with an army of his creatures.

Death Baron+Deathbringer Thoctar+Scythe of the Wretched. Also allows you to protect your own creatures from removal by killing them off and bringing them back.

Query:
Does its ability mean it has Death Touch, or does it just mean the creature has to die and of been dealt damage by the scythe this turn?

Okay, I had this equipped to a 3/3 with no other creatures on the field, I attacked my opponent, and he blocked with Kiega the Tide Star. Needless to say there was an hour long debate over whether or not I got Kiega. What should have happened?

@greatwulf, it's not deathtouch. a creature needs to have dealt damage to another creature (even if it wasn't equipped at the time), and the scythe needs to be equipped to the first creature before the second is sent to the graveyard. example:

your 1/4 turtle (not equipped) attacks, and is blocked by your opponent's 2/2 rat. during your second main phase, you equip the scythe to your turtle, and cast some kind of effect that would cause the rat to be sent to the graveyard. the rat would then come into play under your control, and the scythe would equip itself to the rat.

@tercuis, a 3/3 (without first strike or double strike) with the scythe is a 5/5, blocked by keiga, a 5/5. both creatures would be dealt lethal damage and both be sent to the graveyard. keiga's effect would have no target, and is still being sent to the graveyard after being dealt damage by the equipped creature. therefore, you get control of keiga.

OK, dumb question time: if the creature dealt damage to and graveyarded a bunch of creatures (let's say the equipped creature was also enchanted by Lure,Beastmaster's Magemark, and Venom), then do you get all of those creatures? Which one would get the scythe? Do you pick?

For anyone who might not know, this artifact references The Wretched.

Ashling the pilgrim, FTW =)

@Tercuis: I'm no rules judge, so this is probably wrong =)

But I THINK:

They trade in combat, then since you are the active player, your ability triggers, then keiga's does. His ability has no targets, so it fizzles. However, you ability will return keiga after his resolves. I'm pretty certain Keiga is yours. But don't quote me...

Scythe of the Wretched is one of those cards that just screams COMBO! And when parried with Crypt Rats it is able to do just that.

I made a similar post under Crypt Rats but I'm lazy and I don't feel like typing to much... So Long story sort I made a deck that uses Crypt Rats and Scythe of the Wretched to make an infinite combo deck thats really fun to play in multi-player... Ive gone through about 10 deferent decks based off this combo starting from when Mirroden was first released.

So 10 decks latter and heres where I'm at...

Its a combo deck based off Crypt Rats equipped with Scythe of the Wretched while having a mana creature on the field (ie Blood Vassal) and a life gaining creature (I use a Dross Harvester... for personal taste reasons) and now your off to infinite fun... well not infinite fun as the combo is infinite but your opponents life totals aren't....

And If you have a hard time playing off the combo due to Crypt Rats getting hated by all the other players, fear not! Thats why you add a Necrotic Ooze to the mix and a Will-o'-the-Wisp in your graveyard for good measure.

Any ways heres a link to my 'Wretched Rats' deck for your viewing pleasure! Leave comments if you like it, change it to work for you and have fun in multi-player casual games!

@ Tercuis

I briefly describe what happen: Both creature are put into the graveyard and the ability of the active player trigger first which is the Scythe, then the trigger ability of Keiga is put on the stack if there is any legal target. If there is no creature on the field at this moment (the trigger ability of your Scythe is still on the stack), the ability cannot be played and therefore lost due to no legal target. Then the Scythes' ability trigger normally pulling Keiga back to the field under your control with Scythe attached to it.

If your 3/3 creature did not die in combat because you give it +0+1 somehow, he can target it with the Keigas' ability, and gain control of it while the Scythe is still attached. Rule 301.5d states that the creature is still equipped even when the controller has changed. However the trigger ability of the Scythe is still controlled by you, pulls back the Keiga and attach itself to it. Since the 3/3 creature loses +2/+2 due to the equipment unattached from it, it is now 3/4, causes the 5 damage on it be lethal, it is put into the graveyard. Although this damage was done by Keiga but the Keiga on the field is no longer related to it since it left the field once and come back, the ability of the Scythe doesn't trigger.

Note: If the damage stacked up on your creature is enough to kill it when Scythe is removed, your creature will die. For instance, if you have a 1/1 and this is attached to it, and you kill a 1/3 with it, your creature will die when Scythe is removed.

Wojek Embermage+Basilisk Collar+Scythe of the Wretched. If you need to deal with red creatures, just equip him with Darksteel Plate, or something similar.
This is awesome great for multiplayer, especially if someone is playing Slivers, or some other Tribe, like Elves. Best part is, if you set the deck up right, you can get a creature out who is every color, and target him, so let's see how well an Invisible Stalker stands against that boom.

Don't worry, if you want to keep the scythe on it's current target, just equip unscythe killer of kings, too.

@Tercuis: Because the attacking player controls the Scythe of the Wretched, he gets Keiga even if the defender who blocked with Keiga gains control of the attacking creature. The Scythe of the Wretched implies it's referring to the player who controls the Scythe, not the player who controls the creature it's equipped to.

Love equipping this to a double striker; even if you only get chump blocked, you still gain creature advantage. Oh, and Puresteel Paladin makes this that much easier to move around.

@Tercuis

Here is EXACTLY what would happen:

So after combat finishes, both of your cards are marked with lethal damage, and state based actions will send them to your graveyards at the same time. Then, because you are the active player, your triggered ability will go on the stack first, followed by your opponent's triggered ability when he gets priority.

(603.3. Once an ability has triggered, its controller puts it on the stack as an object that's not a card the next time a player would receive priority. See rule 116, "Timing and Priority." The ability becomes the topmost object on the stack. It has the text of the ability that created it, and no other characteristics. It remains on the stack until it's countered, it resolves, a rule causes it to be removed from the stack, or an effect moves it elsewhere.)

Once you both pass priority, the stack resolves the most recent effects first - which would be Keiga's. Your opponent would indeed gain control of a creature - but if you control no other creatures, then it was just a waste for him. After that finishes, you would retrieve Keiga from his graveyard.

So yah; you wouldn't put Keiga onto the battlefield under your control, only to have it stolen back by Keiga's effect, unless Keiga was attacking YOU and you blocked it (because the effects would go on the stack in the other order).

Obviously, the opponent is going to be too smart to block or attack with anything that could be touched by a creature equipped with this. You're going to have to force them to see things your way. Fortunately, there are a number of cards that can do exactly that.

From off the top of my head -

Feral Contest
Prey Upon
Pit Fight
Arena
Domri Rade

I'm sure there are more. I also think one important thing to remember is that your creature has to survive the combat in order for the scythe's ability to trigger. The wording on this card reads "by equipped creature" not by the equipment, so your creature still needs to be standing in order for it to work. You can't just send a 1/1 Sapproling equipped with this card against the Sliver Queen, then Doomblade and return her to the field under your control. As long as you pick and choose your opponents creatures though, you can eventually scale up until you have a big creature that has a low chance of losing to whomever you pit it against =)
