Extremely effective finisher for control decks and possibly the best blue creature ever printed. "Good" is a major understatement.

Really? Somebody didn't rate this 5? This is Morphling we are rating here, the best creature in magic? ever! Have you lost your head? He has EVERYTHING you could ever want in a blue creature! Do you not know why it's nickname is "Superman?"
I loved the Urza block. Still do of coarse but, when it was standard. Oh, I miss old school "Magic."
@Vorthosian: Are you kidding me? What are you talking about? You must be joking, or drunk and if not you are both. First of all Tarmogoyf is not even blue. Secondly, Meloku sucks and so does Keiga. Morphling is cheaper and has such better abilites. In fact, your observation is so wrong it has just become overwhelming clear to me that you were joking.
@Neutralion: Thornling better? Really? You must never have had the privilege of playing with Morphling, because if you have ever even played one game with Morphling you would know that he rocks the socks off of Thornling. I think Mr. Vorthosian could even figure that one out. Although, maybe not. You two are the reason Wizards will never reprint Counterspell. I'm soooo going to get flamed and voted down for this, but...
The game has passed this guy by. Over the years MtG has become more about creature power and less about everything else. For the same CMC, I'd rather play Djinn of Wishes, Belltower Sphinx, or Serra Sphinx.
This guy dies to bolt and most removal if you didn't leave a mana open to save him. So against ,, and you're probably waiting till turn 6 to play him if your opponent has cards in hand. You could argue then, that this guys' spot is in your deck's CMC slot. Then he has to be compared to cards like Guile, Sphinx of Jwar Isle, and Sphinx Magosi. He doesn't nearly come out ahead in those comparisons.
He's among many classic creatures from the past like Juzám Djinn, Nightmare, and Serra Angel. All cards that are still very playable, but are not the apocalyptic menaces they once were. 3.5/5 since some decent equipments/enchantments could still make him a very dangerous character, but he definitely isn't "Superman" or "God in Cardboard Form" anymore.

I couldn't agree more Paleopaladin. Even if damage on the stack rules HADN'T changed the recent mad dash by Wizards to make KeWl kRETures OMG!!!!! and thus giving us ridiculously efficient creatures (Wurmcoil Engine would've cost at least 8 back in Urza block, hell it would've cost at least 8 in Time Spiral block) would have meant Morphling would have been passed by, but now he's REALLY passed by. No more relevant to the best creature discussion these days than Juzam or Erhnam Djinn.

Always was and always will be a great card.
I used to play mono blue control back in Urza days and this guy was my killing tool.
Though I agree, while he was once "God in cardboard form", he is now simply a powerful five mana investment. Unfortunately Wizards upped the ante and Morphling can't compete with a couple of the newer creatures. (Quicksilver Gargantuan being the most recent. Stormtide Leviathan, Chronozoa and Deep-sea Kraken are also cool.)
Personally what I do now is play a mono blue artifact control. My replacement for good old Superman was Master of Etherium. Keep in mind I also have 4 Blinkmoth Nexus, 4 Mishra's Factory and 4 Seat of the Synod.
Here's how it works:
The Master's p/t is based on the amount of artifacts you control. If he's alone on the field, he is 1/1. Synod is an artifact and an island at the same time. So each one in play makes him more powerful. Also the Masters buff each other. So the more you have the better they are. The Nexus and Factory can turn into artifact creatures for one mana. Therefore, to buff my Master, I simply turn my lands into creatures. Even with only 1 of each of the lands and only 1 Master (which I usually pull way more due to excessive card drawing), the Master would be a 4/4 and you also get a 2/2 flier and another 3/3 buddy, at an amazingly low cost of 2 mana. Needless to say, the more Masters and land I pull, the crazier things get. All the while it is still fundamentally a control deck. I personally noted that I kill alot faster with this combo than with a single Morphling. Or even 2 - 4 Morphlings. And its alot easier to pull the combo than it sounds.
All in all, I still give Morphling a 5/5. I love this card. He was amazing for his time. He's still great now. But sadly he's not the God he used to be.
There's no way Morphling is inferior to any other blue creature. Sphinx of Jwar Isle cannot attack for 5 flying then block a 5/6 Goyf right after, not to mention that the Sphinx would die from blocking that same Goyf. Against a strong MUC player who knows what he's doing, Morphie is almost unstoppable.

The guy was best with the old combat damage rules. You could turn him into a 5/1 when damage was assigned. And if he got blocked, you could also turn him into a 0/X creature to have him survive. So he was basically a 5/X flyer with shroud. That could untap. With the new combat damage rules though... he's still good, but not as good anymore.

Although Morphling is still a VERY good creature, is non-existence in the Top 8, let alone Top 16, of any big Legacy tournaments for several years now pretty much shows that his time has passed by (or he is waiting for the right card/combo/deck to fit into. Not even MUC really uses him successfully, so that being said, yes, Morphling WAS Superman, but Superman, ladies and gentlemen, has at last finally been Surpassed.
....And just like Juzam Djinn and the original printings of Serra Angel, his buy price will always remain high because of nostalgic/still-pretty-good-creature/way-awesome-art reasons.

It's not a bad creature at all, but definitely overrated now. If they had kept the damage on the stack rule, this would have been a 5/6 for five mana that can have flying, vigilance and shroud for 7UUU a turn. As it is now it can swing for five with shroud on the sixth turn if you pay 2U into it, and it will be chump-blocked by any ground creature out there unless you pay one U more, and then you have to assume they'll have no fliers. Then next turn if you want to untap it to block anything with more than 3 power you have to spend at least 1U. Spending so much mana on one creature really messes up your mana curve and you can't do much else with your turn other than attack, or block.
This seems like a classic example of people trying to seem like experienced players by blindly following what everyone else says. Personally I don't believe Morphling is worth the 10$. I know it's not the best creature in the game, but I would use it if it was maybe 1$ or something.

I agree he's not as good as he used to be, but if you think "Superman" can't sit across the table from any other 5 to 7 drop creature in the game and not find a way to win... Well you just haven't played aginst him then... Take the Sphinx of Jwar Isle for example.... after 3 to 5 rounds of blocking him, Morphling kills him... And that's with or without the stack. (quicker with of course).... I normally would wait till I was playing someone to give this lesson on Morpling play, but I'll clear this up now... Morpling plays with control and massive artifact mana exceleration... Sol ring, voltac key, mana valt, academy, ecc... Mophling:3/3 vs Sphinx of Jwar Isle 5/5..... Sphinx of Jwar Isle..... Attack declared... Morphling...Tap 9 mana Morphling: 0/12 vs Sphinx of Jwar Isle 5/5..... Morphling declared as blocker.... Tap 6 mana Morphling: 6/6 vs Sphinx of Jwar Isle 5/5 Result: dead Sphinx... Living "Superman" ... 5/5 without the stack.... 6/5 with the stack...

Alot of people overestimate this due to it's reputation, and alot of people underestimate it because it doesn't go 'boom' like you would expect a card nicknamed 'superman' to. It is an excellent card, you just need to take your time, give him the TLC and he bring home the wins.

Today's power levels have caught up to and exceeded this guy. I don't even see people play him in commander games on MTGO. A combination of M10 combat damage rulings and subsequent highly playable finishers for blue decks have taken down what was once a nightmare to play against. Mono-U control is nearly an impossible build in standard right now, when once it ruled the format. But U/X Aggro Control is very strong, with cards like Delver of Secrets giving them the business much quicker than Morphling ever could. Planeswalkers represent the new standard of finisher for control decks that Morphling once represented.

@laguz: To be fair, the original Morphling was created the same way. According to MaRo, the Morphling art (which doesn't really make sense based on it's abilities) was just some unused Clone art laying around
Say what you will, he's still a mighty fine win condition in mono-blue control.

Morphling is no longer the offensive juggernaut it was, but Superman is more than just an offensive juggernaut. It never was a one-trick pony.
1) Ability to untap to many is just vigilance, but it combos with many other cards in the game. Anything requires multiple tapping or an untap creatures could use this ability. Quicksilver Dagger, for example, Morphling could pew pew better than any Sphinx.
2) Shroud keeps Morphling neigh unkillable, and since it's not a permanent shroud it's pretty much like a semi-hexproof, allow you to enchant or equip it, a benefit sets Superman aside from other shroud creatures.
3) Ability to block almost any creature, with old rules you could kill attackers without dying. While its offense is dampened, Morphling's blocking power never fails, it can still attack and untap itself for defense.
People are right when they say Morphling is no longer as powerful, damaged by both M10 rules and power creeping, but that doesn't make it weak. It deserves at least 4/5 in a regular player's hand, and 4.5+ for those who know how to use it.

@Shannnnoonn: I'm pretty sure that would not work, as the negative power would still be there meaning that when you pump back from "0/12" you are really pumping from -6/12 and would get a 0/6 Morphling with which to block the Sphinx. (See Char-Rumbler and Spinal Parasite.)

Shannnnoonn, what's 3-9? I assure you it's not 0. Negative numbers exist in Magic. Don't believe me? Char-Rumbler. You're bringing Morphling to -6/12 with that first pump and 0/6 with the second, wasting 12 mana in the process.
