The first time I read her Ultimate,
I was thinking only of creatures, enchantments, and artifacts.

Then I realized the implications of the Emblem in combination with Instants and Sorceries-
and honestly, is there anyone out there who wouldn't like to cast Mana Drain, Lightning Bolt, Dark Ritual, Time Walk, or Berserk as many times as they can afford to?

And of course she is no JtMS, but would you really want her to be?
She requires some support to really shine, but I think she'll find a home in *several* decks,
ousting Jace, Memory Adept from decks that aren't mill-focused,
and hopefully restoring some honor to the Blue contingent of Planeswalkers.

This is what a planeswalker should be - impressive, tricky to play, with a suitably spectacular ultimate. Regardless of Standard, she will go straight to a lot of Commander decks. And she's a moonfolk!

imagine playing against a control player and in the late game they just tap some lands, show you a dissipate, and then just put it back in their hand.

this thing is gonna be SO HARD to beat if you can pop her ultimate!

i'm glad they made the ultimate a very good one without basically saying "you win the game", like Elspeth, Knight Errant or Jace, the Mind Sculptor.
and the fact that she has the type of abilities that are not used widely in play, yet contribute to getting it off is an example of a good design. she's well rounded, and can give multiple advantages for blue. 4.5/5

I'm hoping she doesn't see a lot of play so I can afford some. But I expect she will - she's strong enough that decks will bend around her to take advantage. She's not going to be a 4-of I don't think - she doesn't do enough to advance your game until you use her ultimate - but Planeswalkers probably shouldn't be.

I have a dream of getting her ultimate with Mind Over Matter on the field. With one card in hand and one island I will basically have infinite mana and the oppononent will never have an untapped permanent. God forbid the card in hand is a Boomerang or Counterspell. Just discard boomerang twice to untap two lands and then cast it to bounce a permanant and repeat. I mean any spell really. With one island I could use Time Warp to take infinite turns. Her ultimate is the most fun one I've seen yet. Plus she's kinda classy and pretty. Yet to have a really classy girl planeswalker. Looks like she's a book nerd, too. I really hope I get her.

This is probably my favorite card in the set and I really wanted to open it at the prerelease, but i opened a griselbrand instead. Griselbrand is great and all, but it's no Tamiyo. I did lose to a Tamiyo, though. I must have done something wrong in a former life. Perhaps I was a Belieber.

PRERELEASE WAR STORY: Opened this in my sealed pool. I had a perfectly fine U/W Humans/Angels deck (Herald of War, Angel of Jubilation, other good stuff). It had one Geist Snatch as my only piece of countermagic. The tournament went 5 rounds, I played 14 games. 8 of my game wins, I Ultimated her and proceeded to lock my opponent out with that counterspell.

I usually put her up to 9 loyalty before popping the ultimate, too. A tapper that good is worth an extra turn, especially if you're staring at an upside-down Wolfir Silverheart paired with a Hound of Griselbrand. I had a pumped up Herald of War to block the Silverheart, but had to tap down the hound.

Surprisingly, she works excellently with Tibalt, the Fiendblooded. Her ultimate helps with his +1, and her -2 allows you to deal more damage with his -4. His ultimate and her +1 don't really go particularly well together, but still.

So combos with her ultimate:
Dark Ritual: Unlimited black mana
Seething Song: Unlimited red mana
Snap: Unlimited bounce
Rewind: Unlimited counters
Also the text, "sacrifice an X" is replaced by the lowest cost X you have on the field or in hand.

Her ultimate. What is this I don't even. I mean, I'm a fairly new player (didn't know about Snap until now, etc.), and I already see some AMAZING combo potential with her. Jin-Gitaxis, Core Augur is suddenly a +7 every single turn (assuming you actually have a way to PLAY him...), and Venser's Journal makes her absolutely hilarious in a white/blue control. Outside of Standard, we have Sleep for a MASSIVE draw engine, PLUS getting the bonus of Sleep forcing their creatures to stay tapped for a whole turn. If you're having trouble getting to her "better" effects (granted, a "that card's dangerous, stop it forever" as a +1 is amazing by itself), she's BLUE. Think what we have in the Phyrexian BLUE cards: LOTS of Proliferate. Tezzeret's Gambit, Fuel for the Cause, Inexorable Tide (which combos SO well with her ultimate that it's scary), Steady Progress, Thrummingbird, and Viral Drake WITHOUT including colorless cards like the Contagions. This card can and will quickly become a staple in any blue deck. I can almost guarantee that.

Oh look, Wizards remembered Kamigawa existed. Nice.

As for the card? Love it. A fun and funny blue planeswalker. Her +1 is effective without being overly powerful, her -2 makes your opponent think twice about attacking, and if you hit ultimate? Shenanigans abound.

She is why I play Magic. She's fun, pure and simple. I really hope no one breaks her and makes her impossible for me to afford, I'd love to run a copy or two of her.

It annoys me that a lot of the top rated comments are often the most useless.

Post Playtesting thought: Her -2 looks very situational on paper. In reality, most of the scariest creaures are 1 of's or 1/1 flyers (save delver). Her -2, as I said below, is a "free draw" because it does not cost mana to use turns after she has come out. and with that, it is not unlikely, at least I have found, for ther -2 to end up being 3 or so cards.

Anyway, her ultimate should seldom be taken into consideration, for exactly the same reason that no other planeswalkers ultimate abilities should (baring those like Karn, with a +4)

Her +1 is something to be feared, because at WORST, it sets your opponent back a land, more if there is a better mana producer on the field. It locks down fields of single creatures that are just mean (see titans), wurmcoil engine will lose its lifelink if it is always tapped, hellrider wont be swinging very hard it is tapped (though hellrider does suggest a bigger board presence anyway, so a less effective point)

Unlike ajani vengent, her +1 actually does lock things down. And that continuous "freeze" effect is something that is very valuable to control.

her -2 replenishes your options. When you can draw even 1 card without being taxes mana, you have made a drastic increase in your overall speed of gameplay. Think twice is used not because it is drawing deep, but because you dont have to risk depleting your mana before casting your spells. Concentrate costs 4 mana to play and is a sorcery, and though its 4 mana for 3 cards, i still prefer think twice ("5" mana for 2) because I can chose to use a counterspell or think twice, not one of the other. Tamiyo's -2 says that the next turn after she comes out, her -2 is likely at least 1 card without taxing your mana, and that is powerful. Being able to play the card you just drew is mind boggling, and a definite advantage in all decks that draw.

her -8 is exploitable, we all know it, there is no need to get into it. When all your spells have buyback 0 and you have no maximum hand size, the only thing that scares you is a sword of war and Peace.

This is what I like to see as a Planeswalker. She's very good, but costs enough to not warp the metagame around her.

The +1 ability is great, and since she can protect herself, I think she'll see decent play in control and maybe midrange decks that run blue.

The -2 is strong, and can be used 2 turn in a row right away if she survives. Imagine drawing 3 or 4 cards per turn with it. Not too difficult to set us with Lingering Souls or the new Entreat the Angels.

And for the finisher, I won't say how good it is, just list some great cards to use with it that might not be obvious.
Tome Scour: Draw 5 for U.
Time Warp: Take infinite turns. (kinda obvious I guess)
Wild Cantor: Infinite Storm count into Grapeshot
Fauna Shaman: Don't worry about whatever you just discarded.
Giant Growth: Massive pump.

She's not as broken as Jace, the Mind Sculptor was and is, but if she can be protected, she will win you games.

This card is strongly underrated and I'll tell you why.
People tend to think this is a "meh" planeswalker, better than Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded, but worse than the other Innistrad block walkers like Sorin, Lord of Innistrad and the like. I do think, Tamiyo might be the best planeswalker of this block. She could even be the new Jace, the Mind sculptor or, at least, a fixed version of him.
But let's take a closer look at the card: The mana cost of 3UU is fairly high, but still playable in control decks, in which she will definetely see most play.
She enters the field with 4 loyalty counters, which is pretty much. People will hardly be able to kill her in one single attack.
With her first ability, she can even protect herself from attackers! Or, you can uise the +1 to tap your opponent's lands. It strongly reminds me of Ajani Vengeant, although it's even better. (And Ajani did see play a lot!)
Her second ability is probably her best. It allows you to draw a huge amount of cards the same turn she enters the field. Remember: You can also target yourself with her ability, so you can draw cards after your attack. I can see Tamiyo in a Faerie deck with bitterblossom where you often attack with 5 or even more tokens.
Her last ability is just icing. Infinite Counterspells/Removals, Mill protection etc. It's nowhere as good as Jace's ultimate, but it does help you win the game.
So, overall I think Tamiyo is one of the strongest Planeswalkers ever printed. She surely is stronger than the entire Lorwyn cycle and might be the 2nd best blue Planeswalker ever (just after JTMS).

So my buddy and I were both buying booster boxes. I really wanted Tibalt and he really wanted her. I told him I'd likely give him her for Tibalt or something else. That was till I read her card. I slapped her right into my black/blue proliferate deck and proceeded to win at life.

Something I'm surprised I haven't seen mentioned is that if you lose her for casting her ultimate she goes back to your hand and becomes a drawing machine for you. I mean correct me if I'm wrong

I was so excited for this planeswalker, and when I got one at the prerelease, it made my day. I'm honored, Mistress Tamiyo, that I own a copy of your card.

I was going to make a list of cards I thought her ultimate ability could combo with. Then I figured I would have to type the name of every Magic: the Gathering card that does something good, and that would have me here for all eternity.

So I just thought I'd mention that with any card like seething song or dark ritual, you get infinite mana. And you can do a lot with infinite mana.

@LordofLiege, no, she doesn't go back to your hand. Check the rulings. But she's still amazing.

Pick up your cheap ($25) copies of this card while you can, folks. She's outstanding for mid-range and control decks and she'll likely see heavy play in Standard while she's legal.

Having Frost Titan's ETB effect as a +1 is pretty fantastic. Her -2 ability is fueled by the +1 and is a source of repeatable card draw. Her ultimate is just bonkers.

As others have mentioned, this card is like a less-broken incarnation of Jace, the Mind Sculptor. I'm certainly going to get a lot of use out of it in my EDH deck.

I once had an idea for a combo that could be put into a spell-slinger deck that utilized Call to Mind and Cast Through Time to keep my hand stocked with all the instants and sorceries I'd ever need.

As shaky a combo-idea as that was, only now that I'm looking at this right now do I realize how obsolete and absurd that idea was.

You gotta love Planeswalkers that not only have abilities that synergize with each other, but who can protect themselves at the same time. Her first ability can help lock down the board for you along with all that other crap blue has that keeps your opponents stuff tapped out, i.e. Gigadrowse, Frost Breath, Frost Titan (and for some real shenanigans, Sleep) and etcetera, and her second ability turns all that control into easy card advantage. (Not as easy or as OP as Consecrated Sphinx, but then we're talking about the single most broken form of permanent card advantage ever printed.)

Pulling off her ultimate is unlikely due to it's cost, low increase from her plus ability, and aggro she'll generate, but with enough control I don't think it's completely unlikely. I don't think I have to mention how powerful her final is. That emblem gives you such stupid easy recursion that it would make my younger brother, who owns two Debtor's Knell's, facepalm. Pretty much guarantee your opponents that they'll never be able to keep your permanents off the board, a supply of instants and sorceries limited only by your mana capabilities, and don't even get me started on what you could do if you owned her, her emblem, and a Force of Will...

This is the first Planeswalker I've ever truly seen, thought of my Izzet deck, then thought; "I want that." Though I'll admit, that's only because nobody knows what Ral Zarek 's abilities are yet. (But whatever he does, I want him, too.) Though she's better suited for a mono-blue control deck, having her to slow down an opponent and speed myself up (and have an unlimited supply of Electrolyzes, Lightning Bolts, Pongifys and Counterspell in the rare event her final goes off) strikes me as nothing short of a boon in any instance.

And I'll eat my big pre-release promo card of Blossom served with a sauce made from my Griselbrand if that artwork doesn't scream; "Tamiyo is from Kamagowa"

4.5 out of 5 for utility, effectiveness, and moderate splashability, but minimal counter gain and an ultimate that's more like a nice wish than a feasible possibility.

@ mechakraken, it means exactly what it says.

If you play a spell during your opponents main phase, at the beginning of their end step you do what you're told to do. If you perform the action at the end of their turn, at your end step you do it.

tamiyo has very strong effects, but remember, 4 mana -> 5 mana is a big jump. That's 1 more turn where the 4 mana walker could use an ability, and 1 more turn for the opponent to play something else to threaten your walker.

I think she's a good threat in control mirrors that tend to rely on 1-2 fat creatures where tamiyo can lock them down, and since control games last long, she might actually reach ultimate. Against aggro she should probably be boarded out. Drawing a bunch of cards against tapped weenies is nice, but I would rather be playing a board sweeper or else I'm dead in 1-2 turns (especially if you're staring down a sword of war and peace). I suppose gideon + tamiyo could work, assuming you drop gideon the turn before and +2, hope he survives, next turn drop tamiyo and draw cards, then gideon +2's again. This might not work in reality though.

For those wondering of her background, she is a Sarotami (Moonfolk) from Kamigawa. This actually has me hoping for a return to Kamigawa. Love the card but it's a bit costly to get out and will be difficult to protect until it is strong. Still if you can do it I feel bad for the person sitting at the other end of that table for she is absolutely terrifying with those blue take another turn cards.

I've had so much fun playing Tamiyo. Her +1 is enough to swing a lot of games my way, either by keeping a threat from attacking or blocking, or by messing up my opponent's mana base. Still, I'm not going to lie. The reason I love the card so much is that her ultimate is just really, really cool. As a lot of people have said, there are many ways to end the game after getting the Tamiyo emblem out. Here's one I haven't seen yet:

The reason I like Tamiyo the most (other than the fact that she's full of more flavor than a mexican fajita), is because her ultimate, while certainly a win-condition in any right, is the first ultimate that actually allows the PLAYER to decide how he/she wants to win. Do you want to dark ritual infinitely and use that to kill them? Do you want to just keep your opponent locked down with counterspells? Do you want to kill them with many uses of lightning bolt? Its the first ultimate that pleases the Johnny player in the game, and that's something I can respect. 5/5 Tamiyo, you're amazing.

I had never preordered a card before Tamiyo. I can't say I'm disappointed, she's everything I thought she could be.

I've been playing her in an Esper tapout deck with Gideon and Lingering Souls. Lingering Souls buys you time and interacts well with her -2. Gideon turns dudes sideways and then you draw even more.

I have drawn 17 cards in 1 turn off her -2 ability. My opponent cast Spider Spawning into my Gideon. After flashing it back and with my Gideon at 1 loyalty I cast Tamiyo. The next turn I shrugged off my dead Gideon as I proceeded to draw 17. Needles to say, I found the wrath I needed and then some.

As others have said, her ultimate is insane but does not immediately end the game. I did have an opponent concede when I showed them my hand of Day of Judgment and Mana Leak with her emblem in play, however.

Love this card! Tamiyo is such a beautiful, interesting character, and everything about this card captures her perfectly--her abilities, artwork, etc.

So, the card itself from a purely Melvin (mechanical) perspective is pretty alright too! I've had some good luck with her in my control deck so far. Her +1 can tap down their big threat. Or, if they're swarming with little dudes, then I can use her -2 to dig for a sweeper.

Of course her ultimate is nuts. There are any number of crazily awesome things that can be done with it (infinite counterspells, board sweepers, kill spells, Lingering Souls, card draw, etc.), but you really can't count on that happening. And watch out for Zealous Conscr-ipts if/when you get her to 8! :O

I am confused as why the rulings state that tamiyo with 8 loyalty counters activates -8 power specifically goes to graveyard with no posibility of going to your hand instead

based on;
rule 704.4: game state changes arn't triggered during stack resolution.
rule 704.5i: state change check for planeswalker with 0 loyalty counters gets sent to owners graveyard.
tamiyo's emblem: if a card is placed in your graveyard from anyewhere you may have it returned to your hand instead

so my question is, is she being removed as the ability is placed on the stack as her casting cost is paid (-8 loyalty) ?

and even if this is the case wouldn't the game wait to check state till after said stack item was resolved?

just putting this here for some confused players:
5/1/2012: Tamiyo's first ability tracks the permanent, but not its controller. If the permanent changes controllers before its first controller's next untap step has come around, then it won't untap during its new controller's next untap step.
5/1/2012: The number of tapped creatures the player controls is determined when Tamiyo's second ability resolves.
5/1/2012: Tamiyo's third ability creates one emblem with two abilities.
5/1/2012: If you activate Tamiyo's third ability when she has eight loyalty counters on her, she'll be put into your graveyard before the emblem is created. She won't return to your hand.
5/1/2012: Cards that are put into your graveyard can be returned to your hand by the emblem's ability even if they were never in your hand.

With Tamiyo's first ability that taps a target permanent. Can she tap other planeswalkers since they are permanents, and would the planeswalker be able to use their ability's since you are adding and subtracting counters?

Lol @ LlanowarEmissary. She's $15 now. Sorry about your wasted money. Everyone's listing combos with her ultimate... but does her ultimate really matter? She starts at 4 loyalty and needs 8, with only a +1. Most planeswalkers' ultimates will win you the game, however cool hers may be. I still like the card and will rate it a 4/5, but damn people are overestimating this for competitive play.

Her second ability works well with the RTR card Blustersquall.

Cheap overload on Blustersquall makes this an easily achievable combo, so you don't take damage for a turn while simultaneously drawing more answers to the opponents creatures that you are tapping.

The +1 isn't strong enough in my opinion. Five mana for a Detain isn't that good. I do think this planeswalker does need to be built around to be really good. Jace is more utility than this one.

Oh come on...why do people think getting her -8 isn't feasible?

ANY decent white/blue player can delay the game for at least 5 turns even without her +1's help

Does no one really remember the time when people thought Luminarch Ascension was crap, then suddenly it became very viable????

Then try to do that 4 turns with Tamiyo but instead of angels you'll be getting infinite Cyclonic Rifts, infinite Unsummons, even infinite Dissipates

Ultimate combo for Automatic Win:

Turn 2. Silver Myr
Turn 4. Tamiyo *start using +1 ability*
Turn 6. Sphinx-Bone Wand
Turn 8. Drop emblem

Now You're All set up!
1. Tap Silver Myr for Blue.
2. Play Twiddle.
3. Untap Silver Myr.
4. Add counter and deal one damage to opponent.
5. Twiddle returns to you hand and you repeat from 1 until all opponents are dead!

She's good in a wide variety of blue control decks, but her true home really is in Tap-based decks. Her abilities compliment each other so well, but not in such a way that she plays the game for you like Jace did.

Interesting side note, have gotten her -8 off a few times, and some personal favorites include Sleep and Supreme Verdict.

For everybody who says that planeswalker abilities are not achievable, this is sometimes not true. In the case of tamiyo, it is completely untrue. What deck uses tapping significantly? That's right, tempo decks. In a tempo deck, people are realistically going to be unable to attack effectively, so she is unlikely to take any hits. I know this because, last time I was at FNM, I did that three times, twice in one round, once in another. The tapping is immensely useful, and the card draw just begs to be used with sleep. Using her with creatures with vigilance, you can tap their fatties, attack with your creatures, get past their weenies, and still be able to defend her. I used Serra Avenger mostly for this, and I found it to be very effective.

Nothing like infinitely casting sleep to keep everything tapped forever.

Keep this in mind when playing her.
1: Her ultimate is good, but you need to provide the ammo itself. she just makes it renewable.

2: Some cards completely change their meanings if you use them with her. For example, Tome Scour turns into a draw 5 for U. thats insane.

3:don't be afraid to use her -2 ability. If you can stop their big assault, you can use it, draw a lot, and immediately prepare for the next attack.

4: This card can turn counter decks into absolute nightmares, especially if they have Rewind.

I have a hunch that Tamiyo WOULD have appeared in the canceled Innistrad novel. As a narrator/commentator. A 2-4 page discourse on some aspect of lunar influence in Innistrad before each major section, and a paragraph at the beginning of each chapter. She was cast in her introduction as being a detached observer, and just offering prologue, commentary, and Sequel Hook-compatible epilogue would suit that just fine.

How to become god in Magic:
Tamiyo Emblem
Omniscience
Leyline of Anticipation
Pull from Eternity in hand
Death Wish in hand
Angel's Grace in hand
Time Stop in hand or Counterspell of choice
Lifegain card in hand (if not winning this turn)

Not only is everything infinitely castable, but you can cast anything in Magic.
So let's review, you can counter anything with Time Stop, even things that normally couldn't; you cannot be killed because of Angel's Grace; and to top it all off you can grab any number of cards from outside the game (Pull from eternity will keep Death Wish coming back). And everything casts at instant speed, just in case.

I have revised your plan, Mastermike:
Tamiyo Emblem
Omniscience
Leyline of Anticipation
Pull from Eternity in hand
Death Wish in hand
Platinum Angel
Time Stop in hand
Mindbreak Trap in hand (for countering spells during your turns)
Any infinite mana loop (for activated abilities)
Reality Spasm
Daring Apprentice (Split Second is a pain)
Elixir of Immortality (to get any spells you've already cast)
and perhaps Silence for fun?

That should actually give you unlimited possibilities. I can't think of anything that your opponent can do to stop you...

Has anyone realized how scary Tamiyo's emblem is with Gifts Ungiven? Not only do you get Gifts back but also the two cards that would otherwise have gone to the graveyard. With Tami's emblem Gifts becomes a reusable four card tutor!

Be fun to see how many Kamigawa cards she plays with.

I was messing around with my casual merfolk deck the other day, and I discovered a infinite blue mana + 2Xinfinite blue merfolk wizard creature token combo.

First, you need Tamiyo's emblem, three Stonybrook Bannerets, a Merrrow Reejerey and an Azorious Chancery on the battlefield.

Tap the Chancery for WU. Spend W to cast Summon the School. Tamiyo's emblem returns it to your hand, and because you cast a merfolk spell, the Reejerey untaps your Chancery. You now have 1 blue mana, 2 merfolk tokens and an untapped Chancery. Repeat until your opponent conceeds.

A little awkward to pull off, but it will be epic when you do.

Also, does Tamiyo remind anyone else of Desmond the Moon Bear?

She's the desktop wallpaper on my computer at work, which is obviously closer to the size of the canvas than what you'd get on a card, and I just can't help but wonder...what's up with her head? I took a look at other Kamigawa block moonfolk cards, and they appear to be have mostly humanoid features, except for the white skin and hair. Tamiyo has flaps of skin that start at her forehead and hang down the back of her head. I understand that the moonfolk are supposed to be evocative of rabbits of Japanese folklore, but are those supposed to be her ears?

That aside, I had her in a Turbo Fog Standard deck. Getting the ultimate off takes work, but once you're done, there isn't much your opponent can do when you can just reuse the same counterspells over and over.

Infinite creatures with Pact of the Titan. Infinite counters with Pact of Negation.

There have been heaps of suggestions for combos with the ultimate, and some of them are cool (DREAM HALLS!!!!). Anyways, heres mine - lotleth troll. Not exactly on colour but meh, infinite trample damage that can be done as a combat trick is definitely a thing.

Here's another combo that you can use her ultimate for: mill cards!

Assuming you've got four Islands and four Swamps on the battlefield,

Tome Scour: mill 20 in one turn
Mind Sculpt: mill 28 in one turn
Breaking/Entering (breaking): mill 32 in one turn
Glimpse the Unthinkable: mill 40 in one turn

Not only that, but you can do this again the next turn!
