An all new ball-game with this card in a Snapcaster standard.
Very tempted, not gonna lie.

Why is Silence Rare?

Because silence is golden.

Or a shock, or, since elite arcanist doesn't have haste, any removal in the game that can kill a 1/1 blue creature.

@lorendorky
Oh man, I really hope they make enemy coloured man lands (essentially finishing the cycle from zendikar). So many of my decks want them D:

When is the right timing to play this? I can see it being cast before you cast a game changing spell in an attempt to bring out a Counterspell that would hit your fattie otherwise? Then it becomes a bluff as to whether they have another counter or something else (ie a combat trick) they desperately want to play. Os is a r am I wrong and this is a way to shut down non-blue / silence toters? P.s Ouch re Elite Arcanist combo.

If silence is golden, which makes it rare, would duct tape be uncommon?

Seems to play well with Voice of Resurgence.

Bant Voice of Silence?

It could happen.

This + Isochron Scepter + Unwinding Clock + an artifact source of white mana = a lot of really angry opponents in EDH.

I'm really happy to see this reprint. Just think of how powerful it is against an aggro deck to make them completely be unable to do anything to the board in the vital early game like turn two or three.

doesn't even work with elite arcanist because your opponent can cast shock/blade/spear/izzet charm etc. et c. in response to silence anyway and you're out 2 cards and the turn spent casting them.

I love that this is a one cost White counterspell.

A decent storm-breaker card. While Orim's Chant is better most of the time, it is 10x the price tag and loses battles against Leyline of Sanctity, which is something a lot of combo decks pack.

If you land this however, you can often cut their storm in half or better; likely winning you the game. If nothing else, it gives you an extra turn to drop hand disruption or Thalia.

It can also force spells through when you don't want something countered, or delay a crucial turn of your opponent. Many many uses for this simple card.

Any $1.50 card that can stop a $500 deck in it's tracks has got to be at least a 4.5 right?

For anyone in doubt, the optimal usage is to stop a storm (or other multi-cast combo) or to setup your own.

Think about this for a second, if this had been made during Time Spiral block, it could've had Split Second added to it. (Ha, get it? :P)

Without the fancy imprint mechanics, this is a kind of card that needs some strategic thinking when to cast it. Just lovely. Keeps Magic interesting when used like that.

So you can't cast silence in response to someone playing something - but could you cast it in response to someone tapping their manna, previous to announcing what they're casting?

also - turns out between Archaeomancer and Mnemonic wall and voidwalk you can shut most decks down pretty well. ^_^

OMG! I'll counter your spell with Render Silent, during your upkeep I'll cast Silence, I'm gonna summon an Archeomancer during my turn to retrieve Silence, gonna cast Silence again during your upkeep... while I mill you all the way down with Millstone.. shy... har har har..

In a BlueWhite control deck, this thing is devastating no matter what stage of the game. If you don't have the mana to counter this during the upkeep step, you basically lose your turn, for White. Then if the caster wants to be a real **** they'll use Snapcaster Mage the next turn. In decks that don't run any counters, this is broken to play against, almost as bad as playing against Mystical Tutor, Untimely Reinforcements, or Supreme Verdict (I actually hate those cards more then this).

This card is one of the reasons I had to start side-boarding Slaughter Games in standard, the same way I had to start side-boarding Dash Hopes, Duress, and Perplex when it became popular in Modern at my local shop.
