Pathbreaker Wurm, turn six or sooner, 8/8 trample and 10/8 trample.

Use with the soulbond guys that give Flying or Trample. So much fun.

Pair this with Silverblade Paladin and/or Wingcrafter. Or another Wolfir Silverheart, then cast Overrun on your next turn and swing for 30.

Combine with any soulbonder in-set for an absurdly efficient pair o' creatures. In a way, I'm disappointed that we won't be seeing more of soulbond, it looks set to be an interesting and complex mechanic. And it blows Banding out of the water.

EDIT: okay, after having tried soulbond out at the prerelease, I must say that it's an incredibly entertaining mechanic and it makes for some great strategic choices. And the Wolfir Silverheart usually wins the game singlehandedly when it shows up.

Outrageous in limited. I'd imagine he'd be crazy in standard as well, paired with Invisible Stalker or Latch Seeker.

Pair with another Wolfir Silverheart. Double 12/12's. Get some evasion on them and game is yours.

Fantastic card. Soooooo much raw power for only 5 CMC. Skinshifter and this guy are going to be good friends.

Soulbond is a wonderful mechanic that promotes so much more interactivity in the game, which in my opinion has been sorely lacking for the last couple of sets. And finally, its awesome that something this good is a starter deck rare. Way to go Wizards!

I played Avacyn Restored prerelease yesterday. Actually, I won it. 7-0, and an absolutely amount of games on the back of it. The thing with it is, it's 12 power and 12 toughness for 5 mana. You don't need to find the most awesome creature to pair with it, it's awesome itself. Who cares if Scrapskin Drake, Pathbreaker wurm, Soul of the Harvest or Gryff Vanguard are the chosen cards. Just go to town. 12 for 5 is just unbeatable in limited.
Seriously, don't lose this guy from sight. My UG was amazing and it was because of him.

The Wallinator: Dont' forget to Miracle-cast Revenge of the Hunted them BEFORE you Berserk. Riku needs to copy first the Revenge, then the Berserk in order to give it to both of them.

I want to name this "Lucien" and then soulbond this to a vampire and name it "Sonja."

The combo of choice for me is Wolfir Silverheart & Champion of Lambholt.
If the champion was out first (which it should be) you now have an 8/8 and a 5/5, which can't be blocked by anything with less than 5 power. And really, you ought to have brought out a few creatures once Champion of Lambholt is out, so realistically it's more like a pair of 8/8s which are more or less unblockable.

We created soulbond because people couldn't understand banding? the mechanic was really good in the prerelease, apart from that.....

Such an immensely hard-hitting card for only 5 mana, it's just such a massive shame that although the Wolfir were meant to be the transformed werewolves, there are only two of them.

I just realized that the wording on the card does not refer to wolfir silverheart gaining +4/+4. Compair the wording on this card and the wording on pathbreaker wurm. The wurm says "...paired with another creature, both those creatures...) refering to pathbreaker wurm and the paired creature. On the other hand wolfir silverheart states "...paired with another creature, each of those creatures...) refering only to the paired creature and not wolfir silverheart.

There are an absolutely absurd amount of possible applications for this awesome wolf,
But the most devastating I've seen played was this with Sigarda, Host of Herons at the prerelease.

I was doing great until Sigarda hit- I conceded as soon as she became a 9/9 with an 8/8 pet.

Also pretty funny with Old Man of the Sea in EDH-
an Old Man capable of stealing a Titan, a Sphinx, or an Elesh Norn (even after the debuffs) is quite amusing.

I love the heck out of this creature. It's so versatile. I can swing with a 6/6 Llanowar Elves (provided I have Elvish Archdruid) on turn three with some mana left over. I am building modern deck that runs 4 of these and 4 Silverblade Paladin and if I grab one of each and play Overwhelming Stampede without losing tempo, I can swing for 30 double strike, trample and score 60 damage in FIVE TURNS. Competitive or not, that's crazy stuff right there.

I'm so glad no stores have raised the price of the intro deck this comes in yet because this is worth more than the deck itself. Plus, I get some nice commons and a FREE PACK! This guy is just awesome even when I'm not playing him1

For some reasons, this card reminds me of one legendary card, Rafiq of the many.

Rafiq of the many, you swing 8 with 4 CMC.
Wolfir Silverheart, you swing 8 with 5 CMC with other big creatures.

This card is absolutely amazing. 5/5

This guy can get out of hand... FAST. Pair him up with other great green creatures like Predator Ooze, Dungrove Elder, or even Ghoultree, and you will be able to inflict a world of hurt very quickly. This guy goes absolutely fantastic in wolfrun decks.

Is there any reason this card isn't stupidly overpowered? If your opponent isn't playing black/blue or wolfirs you've basically won. 5 mana for a total of 12/12? Wolfir comes in as 8/8 if he's soulbound and he gives another 4/4 to what he soulbounds too.

Lets compare.

As white you get to drop Avacyn for 8 mana, and she comes in as Wolfir without helping someone else. Or you can pay 5 mana for one of the mana 3/3s or 4/4s available. Not a lot of thought went into the design of this card, and like most cards like that, it gets 5 stars.

@RedJaron : You could not have them benefit from both soulbound effects. You can only soulbound unpaired creatures, so two different soulbound will have one not resolve.

Like ElCarl said, this and Champion of Lambholt is good except that if the champion came into play first then it will be 6/6. So an 8/8 and 6/6 and now we got rancor back. Mono green beat downs are looking good.

Exelia, the text on the card tells you the answer. Wolfir Silverheart remains soulbounded with another creature "as long as you control both of them." So, yes, you have to control the other creature for Wolfir's soulbound power to work with it.

Great card! This is the card that finally made me start playing Magic--the artwork is so cool, I couldn't resist buying the intro deck. And then another. And then a fat pack. And then...

This is on par with Vorapede, if not better.
Which makes me question it's rare status.
It's got it's up and downs, but 12 power for 5 mana is kind of pushing the limit.
-
If it were a 3/3 with Soulbound +3/+3 it would've still been great (9 power for 5 mana "like" Precursor Golem)

Question: Does the creature you soulbond with have to be under your control?

Recently in a two-headed giant game, I wanted to soulbond this guy to my partners Angel of Jubilation to get a giant flyer. This sparked some debate and ultimately I didn't get to do it. But is it legal?

Edit: Thanks for the reply Paulonius :)

Drew both this and a Silverblade Paladin at pre-release. Sadly I never got to bind the two. I did drop this on an Archangel though. The two kept my Triumph of Ferocity churning.

@BuffJittePLZ - Yes, they can. ( http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg%2Ffaq%2Favr - "If a creature with soulbond is paired with another creature with soulbond, each of them will receive both bonuses." )

So let me get this straight- Avacyn returns and rather than destroy the werewolves she turns them all into furries? And now, the furries get a p/t boost from being soulmates with each other?

>_<

On a more serious note, soulbond is an ETB trigger, so while it is on the stack he's still a 4/4, and easier to get rid of. Or you could just kill all of the other creatures your opp. controls.

drtony828
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
@thinkoriginal: I understand that part, but what if they are simply in combat and the soulbonded creature dies as a result of straightforward combat damage? Is Wolfir then reduced to a 4/4 after combat (because the soulbonded creature died during the damage assignment step)? And therefore, if he took 6 damage in combat, he dies, right?

@drtony828
If the creature that was paired with Silverheart is killed/removed before combat damage is dealt (i.e. Murder, Unsummon, etc.) Wolfir Silverheart will return to a 4/4 the next time state-based actions are checked (before combat damage). The 6/6 that blocked the Silverheart lives, and the Silverheart dies.

@drtony828
Actually yeah. The 6 dmg would still be on the Silverheart, so when it loses the +4/+4, it would die the next time state-based actions are checked (right after combat is done)

@Drtony: combat is all dealt at the same time. So Wolfir would deal damage as the same time as his soulbond died so he would still deal 8 damage.

People often talk about how ridiculously costed terrible cards must be a mistake. I find that this must be a mistake. For 5 mana you basically get an 8/8 with "as long as a creature you control is in play this card is an 8/8, if that creature leaves play, this card becomes a 4/4 until you play another creature." Which I find overpowered itself, this isnt even mentioning the fact that it gives another creature +4/+4, even on a 1/1 creature it becomes a 5/5. Turn 5 at the latest getting a 5/5 and an 8/8 is somewhat gratuitous. I just feel it's slightly too powerful.

This card is bonkers. Wizard's purposefully made it to be an insane super expensive card that is played in every tournament, but unfortunately there are just more appealing five drops in Standard, such as Thragtusk. Despite this, he's still super powerful and pretty cheap too, especially since he'll be going out of Standard pretty soon. I can see him being an unstoppable force in kitchen table games.

8/8 + titanic growth to another guy that sticks around. Talk about power. Pair him up with a lightning mauler and swing for 14 out of nowhere. Or flash him in with yeva for a killer combat trick.

Are people hate-rating good green creatures now? This should be way higher than it is. The sad part is that Silverheart probably won't stick around for long in a game. If you are playing any of the other colours and you lose because of this card, then either you suck at deck construction, or you got unlucky and didn't draw your removal (or both?). Green's allowed to win sometimes, too, guys. Considering that this has no protection or evasion, it really needed something to be exemplary. Twelve power for five mana is pretty exemplary. Silverheart comes into play with a driving a fluorescent pink ice cream truck with 'Kill Me' painted on the side, blaring Justin Bieber songs at top volume. It's your fault if you can't put a stop to it. Don't be a wuss. 5/5

The sleeper hit of my Maelstrom Wanderer EDH deck. Cascade into him, then when Maelstrom enters, soulbond them and attack for 19 between the two. (Great because instant/sorcery/ETB creature boosts you cascade into won't effect the Wanderer) Even when I play him other times, he is 4 extra damage the turn he comes out and a fatty besides. Great value for one card, but not to the extent that he feels unfair, he is certainly answerable.
