You could actually use this on yourself to save your own creatures... quite a versatile card. Also its very funny if you imagine turning the Lord of the Pit into a monkey...

Destroy target creature. It can't be regenerated. For ONE blue mana! What a great thing to play during combat when your opponent is attacking with something ridiculous.

Nice card. Can turn your 1/1 whatever into a 3/3 Ape or turn your opponents Akroma, Angel of Wrath into a semi useless Ape.

Turn your own useless weenie, such as a token or a Sage of Epityr that's already used its ability into a 3/3 for one blue...as an instant! Or turn your opponent's Akroma into a 3/3 with no abilities for one blue...as an instant!
Excellent creature control card for blue.

I actually use this in my mono-blue return deck. Apparently a token creature is much easier to bounce than the other fellow. The idea of the card and the effect is just crazy.

It's like a blue Terminate. It would be cuter if the chimp was in a diaper, though.
Also, turn all their good creatures into apes. Can't forget about that.

How. How did this card get printed. How did something this awesome slip past R&D?
First off, targeted creature destruction in Blue. 'nuff said on that already.
Second, the potential combo/defensive uses are numerous and potentially hilarious. Your best blocker just got Pacifism'd? Re-awaken that rage with a heapin' helpin' of gorilla go juice!
Third, the flavor is great. Blue has always had some of the more random cards, and this is definitely random. In fact, I feel like the art should have a wizard looking on from afar holding up one of those Wile E. Coyote-style signs that says "WAT?!"

I would like to go on record as saying that by comparison to this, Dismember is a paragon of faithful right-wing conservative traditionalist strict construction interpretation of the Color Pie. A black kill spell is a black kill spell. Black is evil and does things on the cheap for a life payment. Nothing to see here. Whereas this a fast-to-play kill spell that makes a powerful green creature. In blue. W...T...F...
I understand more Planar Chaos cards that I should, because my mind is twisted like that. But this card has absolutely 0 justification if you have heard of the color pie. If 'White Memory Lapse' is playing around in the crust of the color pie, this is taking a fork, stabbing it deep into the pie, and forking large chunks of it onto a plate, where you can fork the pie into your mouth and mash it up and eat it with the fork you forked the color pie with.

@DarthParallax: You have heard about Polymorph, haven't you? This is basically it, just not as abusable, and it generally fits in with blue's flavour of transforming creatures and other things, as seen with Snakeform, Turn to Frog and Enchanted Evening.

I think the true "shock" of this card is that it's Blue, obviously.

Also, you give them an Ape token... and that counts for something, I suppose.

Use this on your own ornithopter for a 3/3 one drop. Then drop a black lotus, haste and pump him however you choose!
WHAT!? I read the first 3 words "destroy target creature" on a blue card and was like "oh boy", then I kept reading to find out the drawback isn't so bad at all, considering its cost only at instant speed! It's like Beast Within for creatures only, in blue! And it thwacks regenerators! Awesome! Blue removal! Then you can unsummon the token or something like that to remove it completely!

Now has a functional reprint in Gatecrash, in the form of Rapid Hybridization (or whatever the English name will be; we only have the French print as I type this). You just get a Frog Lizard rather than an Ape.

It would be nice even as a sorcery but the fact that it's an instant just makes it amazing.
Tap all your creatures to attack in your aggro deck. Wait for an opponent to swing with something less than 3/3. Use this to destroy one of your tapped creatures and use the 3/3 to block. Free removal and you get a free creature out of it.
And that's just one of hundreds of possible combos. The best thing about this card is that it can really make you think. It's not like most removal where it's obvious.
I had another nice combo with it the other day where I had Guttersnipe out in my R/U deck. My opponent was 6 life plus Witchbane Orb. First I used Lightning Bolt on his Worldspine Wurm then I used this then finally I unsummoned the token, dealing exactly 6 damage for 3 mana. If I had Talrand, Sky Summoner out as well then I could have got 3 tokens too.
Surprised nobody has mentioned Rapid Hybridization yet. Almost exactly the same card, except this is strictly monkey-er.

This card is freakin' amazing, both in flavor and functionality. However, given a choice, I'd choose Lignify over this 9 out of 10 times for several reasons:
- pongify can't deal with indestructible creatures; lignify can - pongify puts the target in a graveyard, while lignify renders the target useless on the field - lignify is green and pongify is blue; I don't really play blue
Still, overall an amazing card. 5/5 for lolz alone.
Okay, seriously, my jaw hit the floor when I first saw this card. I don't even remember how I first found it, just that to still day I am still utterly befuddled and flabbergasted by it.
A blue kill spell. A blue, kill spell. It's a KILL SPELL. AND IT'S BLUE!!!!
I thought blue not having access to creature destruction was one of the unbreakable "Though shalt not"s of Magic; like Richard Garfield descended from Mt. Sinai after a forty-day communion with that written on a stone tablet.
You know, I was always looking for ways to better make my Izzet deck able to destroy opposing creatures; little did I know that for all that time, this monster of a card lay waiting to be discovered. I even lessened the numbers of utility cards that I'd been using for years to help make room for these, like Electrolyze and Lightning Bolt, and I don't regret that decision in the slightest. Even with the drawback of giving opponents a decently sized creature (which they seem to be particularly fond of trying to hit me with), the ability to get rid of anything more threatening than a vanilla 3/3 is insurmountable.
"What's that, an 8/8 Broodstar? Yeah, f**k that; now he's a monkey." ("A Monkey!")
Easy 5 out of 5. for being a BLUE KILL SPELL!
Now all I have to wait for is a form of red enchantment destruction....

Also works for surprise block-kills (card neutral if you kill your own guy and then use the token to kill theirs without losing the token.) Early game 3/3 or late game 1-mana kill spell is the way I view it.

Combos great with Unsummon. So I was playing against a friend and I turned his Phyrexian Dreadnought into a 3/3 ape token. He seemed to think: "Oh well, could be worse" and then I slammed down Unsummon, and thus removing the token from play. He wasn't to happy.
