Proliferate is one of many ways to put counters onto permanents, so I am not sure if I'd start at five mana when it could happen earlier.

another card for creating only-have-planeswalkers type of decks

way too slow. at five mana i could have a gilder bairn up and running

This card locks down games. It absolutely does. When every spell you cast is an opportunity to get a pile of extra effects for free, your victory truly is...inexorable.

Yes, 5 mana is slow... if you don't bother even trying to get some mana accel into your deck.

And for an effect like this, I'd be perfectly content to wait 5 turns to play it. And that's if, for whatever reason, I decided to not put any accel into my deck.

It's not that it cost to much or anything, it's that it wont fit in any decks right now. The decks it would currently go in would rather run some of the other proliferate stuff. I would only want this instead of the clasp or engiene if I was running a bunch of recastable cards or a bunch of draw effects. So maybe if an Instant or Sorcery came out that gave poison counters...

But casual, totally going in the graft deck with some Oona's Graces.

Although Gilder Bairn is perhaps more efficiently costed (if you ignore the fact that it costs another three for his ability and this does it simply for casting spells), this one does have a few advantages--firstly, the fact that it doesn't target--that means it gets around shroud and Leyline of Sanctity (a huge bonus in the certain environments), and that it can add counters to multiple things at a time--thus you don't have to choose between boosting your planeswalker's loyalty or one of your ascensions and poisoning your opponent to death, you can do all of them. For casting a spell. Rather excellent if I may say so.

Some interesting combos with the infect mechanic
This plus Ichor Rats--multiplayer poison that gets around Leyline of Sanctity, Imperial Mask, and any life-gain that would undo your non-poison damage (about the only thing it would have to worry about is leeches)

Or, this plus any infect or wither creature, Blowfly Infestation, and Crumbling Ashes, and you can remove your opponent's creatures while also weakening the remaining ones (shroud or not.)

Great for poison counters and some of the more costly level-up cards

I see in the near future Blue/Green Proliferate infect decks played at lighting speed.

@lorendorky

could you explain your turn 2 , U have u and E wild and amulet and you then fetch a forest to get UG in your mana pool and cast explore to get another E wild and fetch for a 3rd land how do u get your first 2 lands untapped to play another explore to get a 4th land?

you could also do
1:forrest, lanawar elf
2:island , explore , mountain explore island
3:the tide
(is this what u meant)

or:
1: island
2: mountain , silver myr
3:island , pyretic ritual , inexorable tide

I'm going to love using this with the Myojin cycle from Kamigawa, Parallax Tide, Saproling Burst, Parallax Nexus, or Parallax Wave.

With Glider Bairn, you have to find ways to tap him without exposing him to the combat zone so he won't die so you can untap him for his activation ability. Not only that, you have to pay 3 mana to add extra counters once per turn and only for one permanent. With the Tide, every spell you cast puts counters on any number of permanents you choose with counters on it already as well as players too, i.e. opponent's poison counters.

Also, Glider Bairn's ability is targeted, proliferate does not target, meaning it get around shroud. Furthermore, let's not forget that infect is not just about poison counters, they give creatures -1/-1 counters, and there are artifacts that you put charge counters on as well as other effects that give counters, like Ajani Goldmane's +1/+1 counters on all your creatures. So proliferate has a lot more applications beyond just planeswalkers and poison.

this plus Hand of the Praetors, play any infect creature spell. And since you get to chose which ability of the 2 trigger first you can have the poison counter hit the player first then you give them another on after that while trigger more effects. Love this Card! I need a few.

yeah i agree its actually slow... and the scenarios that people say might be right but it does include GREEN which actually is just normal for green... but for a natural blue deck without mana ramp, its still good;)) after all.. blue magic players need patience to win:)) unless your aggro(merfolk, etc.)

This is the ultimate mana fix with any of the vivid lands. If you pay a counter to play a spell, then the proliferate gives it back, and then some for your other vivids. I run this in a 3 color Planeswalker deck and it makes every spell that much scarier.

A really excellent card. If you can get it out early, in ways some people have suggested, then it makes for a beautiful proliferating tool. If you can't you'll undoubtedly need to build a Proliferate-themed deck and have this kick in later to beef things up.

Well, i dunno... Seems it's only good when you got some complex combo involving counters, otherwise it's somewhere in between of moderately useful and utterly useless.

Quick question about the card, does the effect stack if I have more than one copy on the field at a time?
So double proliferate from a single spell with two out?

In a standard deck built around this it can be very devastating. Everflowing Chalice with this and your choice of Trigons can be nasty. Add in a planeswalker or two and it gets even better. Or cast Steady Progress for 2U, proliferate twice, draw a card. I'm messing around with it in a U/B control deck and it's pretty fun.

As for getting it out in my deck it's usually a turn 4 card with the chalice. I wouldn't play with 4 in the main deck but 2 doesn't seem bad.

3rd turn with all that work why not just take the first turn option

swamp, 3 dark rituals then 2 mana cylixes.

This card has so much potential that it makes my head spin. Sure, five mana can be costly, but most colors have some kind of mana accel (G, B, and R off the top of my head) while every color uses one kind of counters or another be them -1/-1, +1/+1, charge, spore, time, etc. Not to mention with cards like Magosi, the Waterveil this card just screams "abuse me!"

Why "accelerate" it? Play strong other card before, and this one is only a "bonus"... and a very strong bonus!

How about Mana ramping with an Everflowing Chalice? Get one Inexorable Tide out on let's say turn 4 using the Chalice, then next turn play a second InexorableTide, Proliferating the Chalice, following up with any zero to {1} costing spell. Double Proliferate by turn six would be really fun.

@HayW00d0909:
Ummm...
tell me how that works???
I mean, Unliving Psychopath does NOT get a +1/-1 counter, or even A oounter on it. It gives it +1/-1 until end of turn. Either way if you were gonna give it a counter, it would make it permanent. Also, the other cards you have mentioned doesn't even combo with the Inexorable Tide.

So "Oh No" it doesn't work.

I feel like a Kor Skyfisher bouncing itself would be quite fun... then use all that proliferate to fuel Venser, the Sojourner's ultimate ability... then continue bouncing the Skyfisher to both fuel Venser through proliferate and to make use of Venser's emblem... eventually adding additional emblems as well, since nothing says you cant have more than one...

Evil, evil combo.

I'll take 4 of each :D

Just so everyone who comments about it can be informed, Magosi, the Waterveil does not combo with Proliferate because you return it to your hand in order to get the extra turn.

Interesting, I thought that any use of the word "choice" implied having a target. Then again, it doesn't say the word "target". Has anyone got a ruling on this yet?

Do what now? o_O
Outside of this block (before M11) I'd say this card was only so-so. In the context of current standard...holy balls.

Between Memnite, Darksteel Relic, and the slew of 1 and 2 CC artifacts out there (Steel Overseer shining though once again), you could be proliferating like 5 or 6 times a turn by the time you drop this lol as if that were necessary.

This card is super dirty with any ally deck. my ally deck has this card in it and arcbound fiends as well. i found an abosolutly dirty combo with arcbounds and allies. You play stalking stones and terra eternal to make stalking stones indestructible. every upkeep u can move +1 +1 counters from your allies to your arcbounds. when your arcbounds die u can move the counters on to stalking stones(you have to make it into a creature first). basically a strong indestructible land that can get stronger as your arcbonds get stronger. u can also do this with an relentless rats deck. though u still can do this with any indestructible artifact creature.

My personal favorites are Pentad Prisms and Vedalken Archmages. As long as they already had 1 poison, that's basically game. Fits well on a 5-turn curve too (assuming you're also playing Ornithopters and the like).

@Macsen: Targeting always requires the word "target". There are other examples of specific choices that don't use targeting, such as Soulbonding and Phantasmal Image. Proliferation doesn't target so it will always work on shrouded or hexproof creatures. Of course, the creature has to have a counter on it already.

I'm on an unstoppable quest to answer all year-old questions on obscure cards. Excelsior!

This card would be realllllly dirty in an infect deck, you only have to hit them once, and you could end it the next turn if you cast a bunch of low mana spells.

Graft deck. You don't even need other support.
Shiz git'n 'uge.

I ran a deck like this with depletion counter lands for "ramp." Worked out fairly well; though I did get mana screwed somewhat frequently by my lands saccing.

This art is great. Two guys walking by a lake by some old trees and then you look closer. Yikes. And those things are huge.
