The castle behind these two women is a real Teutonic Order fortress that's in Malbork, Poland. Plagiarism!;) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/06/Malbork_zamek_zblizenie.jpg

While both Foil and FoW can both be free counters, Foil costs only 2UU, makes it easier to use should you have the spare mana to cast it outright. Couple with other cards such as Daze and Obsessive Research or threshold mechanic, the drawback could be lessened or even utilized compare to FoW.
FoW is no doubt still more powerful.
@Channelblaze: I wonder if your idea of pitching Circular Logic could be used on cards with Cascade?

Foil, pitching circulur logic would be pretty cool. Generally redundant, but still, i think it would be pretty cool. I think this is good, but it's not force of will good. Probably not daze good either. Or pact of negation good. So it's once of the not-so-great free counterspells, but it's a free counterspell, so it's still good. 3-1ing yourself hurts, tho.
@Cyberium: Yeah, never thought of that! I like it =P

FoW is more powerfull, but exiles cards. here you discard that may have some uses like Flash of Insight
You: Foil. Look! We both start with a hand of 4, neat!

Foil and Daze are sort of synergistic.
There's got to be some potential use for this in a Life from the Loam deck, discarding an Island and another land -- Loam would make obtaining and recovering discarded lands easy, and Tropical Islands or whatever would help pay for Intuition and transmuting Tolaria West. It'd be hard to recover the Foil if it was dredged into the graveyard, though...

It's worse than FoW, yes. This was in a Duel Deck with about 12 other musthave cards. FoW is about 150$ for a playset, optimistically. Judges?

I know how people are always banging on about 'repring Force of Will! Premium Deck Series: No! :D"
If such a deck ever existed, they would absolutely have to put 4 of these in it.
Think about it. Foil Foils? Yes. Must do. Must have NAOW.

I wonder if Wizards knows how hard this card is to look up on ebay.

I heard this is Tamiyo's way to counter when she gets the -8 emblems up.

I picked up a foil one of these recently, if only because Foil Foil. Works well in my Sedris reanimator deck; I discard an Island and a bomb that I can unearth and get the advantage of countering a really big spell that would have generated my opponent a lot of advantage that he only cast because I was tapped out.
While it's not better, this card does have a few advantages over Force of Will, actually.
1) It has a CMC of 4 as opposed to FoW's 5, making this card easie to hard cast. 2) It's alternate cost causes no life loss. unlike Fow. 3) The card you discard with FoW has to be blue, unlike this card. Foil allows you to ditch two lands if you choose. Provided one of them is an island, of course. 4) This card doesn't cost 70$.

Even if it a bit worse than Force of Will, I admit that Foil saved my ass often.

I want a foil of this, and one for all of my friends. So that when they Foil with their foil Foil I can Foil it with my own foil Foil.

@PhyrexianAdvocate "Opponent: Gemstone Cavern, Flash, Protean Hulk, gg? You: Foil. Look! We both start with a hand of 4, neat!"
That is actually not true. First, they loose a card to Gemstone Cavern, and that only gives them one mana, so they would have to use something like Simian Spirit Guide to give them the mana for Flash. Also, you would be countering Flash, so they never loose the Protean Hulk. In the end, they end up with 3 cards in hand and you would have four.

@Flavioal: Gemstone Caverns doesn't count as your land drop if you play it at the beginning of the game. If you're gonna try and correct somebody, make 100% sure that you aren't wrong either.
The cost is huge, but the cost of not casting it could cost you the game.

When talking Foil versus Force of Will, I like how the mana cost seems to be what a few - not everyone, obviously - are harping on.
Sure, for hardcasting, FoW is better.
What about the alternative-to-paying-the-mana-cost?
Would you rather lose life and exile a blue permanent, or discard an island, and another card - a land, a creature with the madness ability, or something that is either useful in the graveyard, can be brought back somehow easily, etc?
Ultimately it depends, I for one don't want to run the risk of losing mana sources just to counter a spell, but from discussions online **in general** I don't think Foil is being given enough credit... sure, it is no FoW, but there **MAY** be potentials I don't think are being realized with this card that you can't necessarily do with FoW directly.

@ClockworkSwordfish Me too! Apparently we're not alone though...foil Foils are about $10.

it might be work with some madness card with 0 madness cost, like call to the netherworld.
