I disagree on the art, it looks too stiff and bland, the previous art was far superior.

Looks like a swifter, sleeker, less clunky version of the original.

This is the killer, man. The ferociousness of this beast is known for the discarding handicap Wizards placed on him. He can literally bring down your opponent, and WOTC anticipated this by ensuring you won't be putting a second one on the battlefield.

Yeah, MOE, that's just annoying. I agree with test-subject.

I like the artwork, love the card, but that things just CREEPY!

Am I the only one who prefers Razormane Masticore to this one, or is it just me?

@Saxophonist - Situationally I prefer this Masticore - equip Basilisk Collar and he'll punch through a stalemate in nothing flat.

★☆☆☆☆ (1.8/5.0) (2 votes)
@Saxophonist: it depends, do you have a deathtouch equip like JenBroness suggested? also regenerate trumps first strike, however, being able to do 3 damage each turn free makes razormane my favorite.
but in all honesty they're pretty close. molten tail masticore lives up to the family name too btw.

and please, the old art looked like it came from a demented coloring book

nice card, but i don't see how he got into the vault. ya, the upkeep they gave him is very easily breakable, but on his own he's not that good.

on another note, love the new art work, the old one didn't even look like an artifact.

Love him in my training grounds deck. Otherwise I DO prefer Razormane to daddy.

There is an art to using either, when losing a card every turn

Nice to see it looking like a proper artifact in the new art. The old one just looked like a blue lion-thing.

I understand getting some things wrong on a list like that....but putting a card as Worst Ever, only to see it show up in a From the Vault set later...that's the kind of blunder that's really, really hard to make. :P

if you've read this far then you'll know that Masticore isn't really the worst card of all time but I wanted to see how many people would read the whole article and how many people would scroll down to the bottom of this list to see which card occupied the #1 slot. I wonder how many knee-jerk reactions we'll get in the forums eh? Ok that's enough tomfoolery for now - let's get to the real #1 worst Magic card of all time!

The Real #1) Pale Moon (Nemesis: Rare)

Add some deathtouch and youre picking off enemy crits at 2 apiece.

It's really hard to describe how overpowered this was in its day until you've seen it in action. You'd think the per turn discard would balance it, but it didn't.

Slightly less overwhelming now that a 4/4 for 4 is more typical, but still incredibly awesome. (Nowadays you'd want to be sure you have some way to negate his drawback or to draw extra cards. But still, turning all your spare mana to damage every turn will wreck most people's boards.)

4/4 for 4.
Ping engine, can take out some creatures outside of combat.
Regenerate.
Can work around the drawback.

Nice card.

That awkward moment when...Wizards blatantly violates their reserved list. ;-) http://www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/article.aspx?x=magic/products/reprintpolicy

The beauty of it is that what you would draw matters less; your mana is going to be spent on regeneration and zapping.

I do not believe this was (or is) an overpowered card; all its power came from the cards surrounding it. Grim Monolith was overpowered. Thran Dynamo was overpowered. Metalworker was extremely overpowered. If you don't agree with me, think of it this way. If you simply cast Grim Monolith turn 2 (no Voltaic Key), you get six mana turn three. You'd be hard-pressed to find even a way to generate five mana turn three in Standard using only one card, much less six mana. They stopped printed Seething Song for quite some time already, and it's not because of Modern storm. (Song is banned there anyways)

Suppose that Masticore didn't exist at the time, but Wurmcoil Engine did - then everyone would remember Wurmcoil Engine as the most broken creature ever, because it often came down turn three. Heck, you could take any decent mana-hungry spell - Karn, Steel Hellkite, even Primeval Titan would seem horribly broken if it was in the same place as Masticore. The same list played Phyrexian Colossus, a horrible creature by today's standards even with the Voltaic Key combo and Tinker support. If you have fast mana like that, you simply win against anyone without fast mana. Masticore happened to be the most powerful creature when you have tons of mana. Much like in the classic Channel + Fireball combo, now we all know which one is the broken one. Fireball happened to be the most powerful thing you could do (at the time) when you have 21 mana, but when taken out of context (of extremely fast mana) Fireball barely saw any Standard play when it got reprinted again and again.

The same argument applies to Morphling. Besides costing one less and the ability to block flyers, AEtherling is better in almost every way: unblockability trumps flying assuming you're attacking with him, the blink ability encompasses both the shroud and the untap, while also shores up Morphling's biggest weakness, wrath and edict effects. And now that RTR block Standard is almost over, I think we can all agree that AEtherling, at least in terms of tournament balance, has been a fair card. People think Morphling is the best blue creature because the deck Morphling was in won lots and lots of games; but the deck won lots and lots of games mostly because of every card in the deck being overpowered, from Force Spike to Counterspell to Fact or Fiction. If Morphling didn't exist, they'd play I don't know, maybe Rainbow Efreet, and they would still be able to win lots and lots of games. If they had AEtherling instead, they would have done the exact same thing. Counter everything, draw lots of cards, have full grip of counterspells, play Morphling/Rainbow Efreet/AEtherling, win. The true power lies in the full grip of counterspells, but people tend to remember the thing that actually "kills" them.

What happened to Masticore being on the reserved list??
