Its funny how these type of cards always get mad respect and props...but my stasis lock deck back in the day ...later added with Chronotog or my kill them in a few turns burn decks always got me smirks and insulted. This card is worse. Its brainless to use, brainless to defend and cost only 7 colorless.

A decent card, by any means.
The problem is that it's pretty simple to get around,
But once it hits the board it become something your opponent immediately needs to go for.
And, luckily, it's late-game enough to where most of the opponents will probably be top-decking.
With Scars coming soon, I see this guy getting potentially more lethal,
Not that Steel Overseer hasn't helped that along already.

I don't think people give this enough credit. Yes, it "dies to removal" even more than your average creature does, but there are plenty of ways to protect it, especially in M11. I drafted one of these in a mono-blue control deck I put together and they couldn't even touch it.

Maybe i'm a bit biased, as this is the first mythic rare I ever opened, and it was shiny, too.

@Daijin26

How does this card remove skill? It takes skill to be able to play this card and keep it alive. Seriously. First off it costs 7! Unless your playing very basic magic right out of a starter box then theres a high chance that you wont be able to play this wonderful temptress at all. The game will probably be over. But if you DO actually have a way to obtain 7 mana then she's open to any doom blade or any other removal which usually costs around 2 mana.
You pay 7 for a sweet angel
Opponent pays 2 for a journey to no where
You're out 5 mana.
Of coarse there is the chance that the other player doesn't have any removal but each deck (in my person opinion) should have some form of way to have the opponents creatures killed weather its a mana leak, doom blade, path to exile, or even Whirlwind.
A deck should cover all weaknesses. Even if you don't like removal have a strong creature out like Terra stomper and use lure or something.
Also I wouldn't want to draw her if it was my first few turns. It would be basically a waste of a draw and space in my hand.

I'm not a fan of this card. Its effect is impressive but ultimately boring. Either it lives, and you win, or it dies, and you probably lose. It definitely doesn't need to be taking up a mythic rare slot in the core set anymore.

Sure, in serious play, this card blows. It is hard to bring out, easy to remove, and a cheap way to win. But it is fun to use in casual play, let me tell ya.
I like the ability to use gimick decks with friends, decks that utilize crazy combos and interesting cards for a fun game, and this card is definitely fun. I don't play competitively, and Platinum Angel is not my win condition, but for the moment you bring it out, the room starts laughing, and your friend utters an "aw, f**k..."
Priceless.

@ntheawsome: Into the Core says hi.
@VampireCat: If the angel is your only creature, then Gatekeeper of Malakir says hi.

It's tempting to try to come up with a way to protect this so you really can't ever lose, but it's also very, very hard, most likely impossible. The best I can come up with is the following:

Darksteel Forge to make it indestructible.
Leonin Abunas or Indomitable Archangel to give it shroud.
Mycosynth Lattice to make your shroud generator an artifact and therefore also indestructible (plus all the rest of your permanents for that matter.)
Tajuru Preserver so you won't have to sac it.
Treacherous Link so that any damage that still manages to be dealt to it isn't, even through anti-prevention effects (negates Everlasting Torment/Hurricane or similar, as well as infect/wither with Lure.)
Leyline of Sanctity to handle any remaining "all (creatures/permanents) target player controls" effects that might still be relevant.

Even with all that, it's vulnerable to various types of board sweeping effects like Final Judgment, Warp World, Thieves' Auction, Evacuation, Black Sun's Zenith and a wide array of "all creatures get -X/-X until EOT" effects. Also Humility.

If you flip an Erayo and drop Rule of Law or Arcane Laboratory then you're getting pretty close to invulnerable, but even that won't stop multiples of Decree of Pain cycling (easy to do if they have enough mana and Library of Leng.)

Blue_Blur said it right - it takes skill, and a good deck, to actually both land this angel AND protect her so her ability remains relevant. She comes down with one of the biggest targets in MtG painted on her back, and her artifact-ness makes her even more vulnerable than just a plain angel is. In order to have her well protected you have to have a reasonable board setup, which can itself be vulnerable to disruption. She isn't the easy button that many people think she is.

Don't build a deck around this, fit it in as plan B.
Keep a couple of whispersilk cloaks, they'll work for more than just the angel and give u a 5 turn timer if it is on the angel

This would be awesome with Death's Shadow.

3/1/2010 - If your life total is less than 0 and an effect (such as the one from an opponent's Abyssal Persecutor) is keeping you from losing the game, Death's Shadow's ability will actually increase its power and toughness. For example, if your life total is -2, Death's Shadow gets +2/+2.

I really want to find a better card that will keep me alive while I suck my life away at a black combo, but Lich cards are too costly and sometimes dangerous when I need my permanents spared. The Platinum Angel is just the most efficient card to keep me alive for one more turn without surefire death. Yes it dies very easily to removal but who cares, most people don't expect it when I play it and it gives me that one turn I need to end the game. It's a ridiculous card that has a big red target painted on it's head, but it is sure good when you need it.

Disappointed they didn't bring this back. This card, to me, is like the definition of what a core card should be. No it's not as wet-your-pants awesome as you initially think, but lemmie put this into perspective. I started back in Urza's Legacy but didn't really start tournament play until Onslaught, so I missed a lot of good cards or strategies. When I saw this card previewed in Mirrodin that far back, it threw me for a loop, same with Mindslaver, among other things, because it was like they bending the very nature of the game I knew. Getting this from the beginning introduces you to a very interesting level of game mechanics while still remaining very basic.

To top it off, it also makes people learn how to protect their stuff. You get this as a kid or a starting player and your initial reaction might be something in the realm of "OOOH! THIS IS AWESEOM!" only to have it Naturalized or Nature's Claimed. So you suddenly have to figure out how to beat those spells. Then you do and, oh hey, here's my reach infecter that will kill your Angel off quick enough.

So yes, this is one of the most core modern cards I can think of and deserves to be printed. If Royal Assassin is still going, why not this guy? 5/5 for the memories and the unusually awesome mechanics.

A lot of people keep saying how many different ways you can destroy this card. Yeah there are ways, but its the same for ever other card, there is always a way to get rid of it. A platinum angel was the very first magic card the I ever owned, so I have had a lot of experience with how to destroy and protect one.
Ive got an entire deck based around Platinum Angel, its a pure artifact deck too (the recent Mirrodin block was announced a week after I made it, talk about raining on my parade)
While there are plenty of ways to destroy the card, there are plenty of ways to protect it as well.

So, I had this card out; I was at -2 life and 3 poison counters, then someone tried to Dispatch it, I vines of vastwood and win the next turn.

But before I drew vines...

I was holding on to like 14 mana (including elves), but I only had 2 Artisans of Kozilek in my had and a Not of the world, had to save 7 mana so I could cast not of the world to protect the angel before I drew the vines of vastwood, which after I drew it I immediately played artisan and brought back primeval titan. Then won the next turn with the eldrazi I had cast (kozliek, which I drew into after we kept passing to draw.)

The guy needed a smoke after that game. hah.

This card wins me so many games, I only need a few turns after it comes out. This card is amazing! I'm so sad to see it cycling out. - But then again, same for Eldrazis - But then again, when they were in I thought Annihilator was ridiculous. 0 So sad to see them go, but expected it)

This card, the angel; if used right in the current block; is very overpowered imo.

The drawback of this is that it doesn't stop opponents from pursuing their win conditions. You'll have to deal with it eventually, of course, but in the meanwhile, you can just keep on attacking or burning or milling or pinging or whatever it is your deck does. I much prefer Platinum Empyrion: It might not help against alternate win conditions like poison or mill (shame that it's in the same block as Infect), but against the majority of decks that win via damage, their progress is halted completely until they get their removal. Plus an 8/8 body is more useful than 4/4 flying: It's a bit harder to kill on its own, and will help you get your win.

I see this as part of a trifecta combo.
Platinum Emperion, Darksteel Forge, and this.
Emperion makes it so your life never runs out, Angel makes it so you can't lose, and Darksteel Forge makes sure neither is destroyed.
And then you can just do as you please.

Lifegainwithbite
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
@Cookieraider: Yes, there are hundreds and hundreds of ways around it. Any form of removal will deal with it so: Doom Blade it in black, Unmake it in white, Unsummon or Cyclonic Rift it in Blue, Plummet or Ambush Viper it in green, Mizzium Mortars or Flame Slash it in Red or Dismember it in any colour. Look those up. You can also Dissipate or Mana Leak it in Blue before it even hits the board.

Even if she gives it shroud or hexproof, you can board wipe it (Mizzium Mortars, Black Sun's Zenith, Day of Judgment, Cyclonic Rift etc).
Even if she makes it indestructible, you can Black Sun's Zenith, tragic slip or Unmake it.

@Cybertronus: Yes it's perfectly legal. And for good reason.

And that, kids is why this is not played in anything outside casual. That and the painful mana cost. 7 mana for a 4/4 flier that does practically nothing? For that mana cost, you could get Angel of Serenity which breaks your opponent in half when played.

I feel like this card is only viable in an Esper artifact deck wit Master Transmuter, Stoneforge Mystic , a couple Darksteel Plates , and Indomitable Archangel (though since it's shroud instead of hexproof you'd have do some messing around to get your stuff where you need it). Though I suppose a Mask of Avacyn would do the job, and would be better with the mystic...

Also, could be fun with Immortal Coil. Though I don't know how you would balance protecting it with self-mill/reanimation.
