The name is Thrun, Rhymes with fun, And if you give him a fireshrieker your opponent will be very well done.
But in all seriousness, I really like this guy. Pulled one in the prerelease to great success. Nigh-unremovable, and a constant threat if you buff him. This card is crazy, but he isnt invincible. -1/-1 counters are his nightmare, and if your opponent has a Contagion Engine or something similar, Thrun will not be a happy troll. Besides that, though, he is incredibly difficult to deal with once he hits the field. a 5/5, easily.

While he's definitely a great (and fairly simple!) card, he won't tear up casual that much. Casual runs goofy stuff like loads of sacrifice, loads of board clearing, loads of creatures.. or just generally loads.
Elvish piper into Darksteel > Thrun. There's just no two ways about it. Maybe all casual gamers aren't like my group, but we got fairly budget/beastly decks (simply because mixing formats is so powerful without raping your wallet)
Aside from an RDW deck i run and a few counterspell based decks, I can't imagine this guy being too much of a headache. A mere 4/4 with all the Lords, giant Demons, huge green creatures and loads and loads of options over the years just makes him a very tolerable not insane card.
In standard however this guy will be a beast even with infect.

Its always nice to see something that spikes blue in the eye, and then slaps it in the back of the head. Although I wouldn't say this is broken until you add Rancor. The fact that it is legendary it may cause deck construction issues. You run 4 ,you get a high chance to get stuck with extras in your hand. You run 2, they may never surface. Less then 50% chance unless you run a tutor of sorts... Worldly Tutor but a tutor is usually used for a solution instead of a fatty. Will definately have impact once on the field, but too many legendary choices may be the deciding factor in a tight battle that results in top decking. If your at a field lock during game play and then top deck this guy, with another down already... your opponent just time walked.
Not to mention regeneration is an activated ability... Phyrexian Revoker can make sure he dies like a normal creature. 4/5 (I dont think legendary cards deserve 5/5 simply because of the deck construction issues they cause)

Theres a good reason why this guy is named the last troll. THis guy is so elusive, i went through two boxes of MBs and still didnt get it. This card is still amazing even though he dies to Wrath of God, Damnation and infect. But come on people! All most all creatures die to mass removal. A card isn't bad just because it dies to mass removal like every other creature without Phasing or Indestructibly. This card tells blue to suck it, red to run away and cry, and even some of the best black to shove off. Perhaps I've gone off on a tangent but seriously, Baneslayerdies to removal and infect too.

@Totema: I'm pretty sure you can counter something that is hexproof if it doesn't say it can't be countered. The hexproof effect only protects it after it enters the battlefield, not while it's a spell on the stack.
Incredibly underrated in standard. RDW can't get through him (unless they've splashed heavy black for Geth's Verdict or similar); control can't counter him; very little can get rid of him. At worst, he's chump blocking ground forces all day long, at best he's a 5 turn clock.

Ah Thrun, the card that every color hates. can't cancel it, bounce it, or control it, can't bolt it, at best it's a life engine for with lifelink cards, can't arrest or tap them, and all can hope for is to trample over him or play the same card. Ironic that the color of the deck that plays him is the most common method to get around him. His only weakness is flying creatures, but Angelic Destiny solves that little problem.
He's not unkillable and vulnerable to several cards in other decks, but Thrun shrugs off most of the combat tricks of all decks. At a low cost. And can be buffed by you or allies. He's extra fun with lifelink. No green deck should be without it.
Man, this guy's background story is pretty sad...Now i'm going to be sad every time I draw this card, but now....now I'll try harder to avoid him getting killed...and to end his loneliness as well.
I ran u(bw) control last night at FNM. The best way I could see to kill him was playing one of the cloning creatures in blue. The way I actually killed him was Day of Judgement, but that would not have been possible if my opponent had not payed for Mana Leak. Haha! Gotcha!

A delicious tribute to hunger after you gobbled up all the h'ors deuvres with Massacre Wurm.
Assuming that you live long enough to cast the Wurm with Thrun beating on you for several turns (he's likely to come out on Turn 3 in any good green deck), you're not likely to get all their creatures that way, since green isn't exactly known for 2 toughness weenies.
If you're in black, there is one anti-Thrun card in standard you should be thinking of, and one card only:

Elf Combo with Heritage Druid and Nettle Sentinel UG Madness Zoo/Naya Doran Rock Ghazi-Glare Vengevine Survival (pretty much banned Survival of the Fittest singlehandedly) Jund Eldrazi Ramp Valakut (don't let the Mountains fool you, this deck is almost mono-green) Wolf Run Ramp
Green has definitely had its fair share of dominant decks over the years. It might seem hard to get broken with green, but the color has plenty of cards ranging from powerful to decidely ridiculous, including Tarmogoyf, Wild Nactal, Knight of the Reliquary, Lotus Cobra, Fastbond, the aforementioned Survival of the Fittest, Oath of Druids...the list goes on.
On top of everything else, it is arguably the strongest color in the Commander format due to its sheer quantity of mana ramp and the absurd flexibility you get from playing Primeval Titan, Green Sun's Zenith, and Tooth and Nail (more dominant, powerful green cards!) all in the same deck.
JanusAurelius
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
I don't think green can be broken can it? Maybe it's just because I didn't start following tournament recently, but has there ever been a mainly green deck that owned tournament? It's always been a good second color for mana accel and mana fixing, but a primarily or mono-green one?
EDIT: @theratchet1215 I can't figure out how to make a new post, but I didn't realize that it had done that well as a color. (Thanks for not being an arse about my question by the way, and that's not sarcasm, people can be mean about the simplest questions, it's ridiculous, unless of course you were, in which case I bite my thumb at you sir. Just kidding, but only kinda. Anyway...) I guess I see it having problems in the way of removal, if it can't pound it's face in or get a hold with creatures it often has pretty ineffective removal and get's killed. And it's card draw is pretty spotty too. Although now that you've listed them I do recognize some of those decks, especially the Eldrazi Ramp and Valakut (funny enough I discovered how green the thing was a couple months ago, I was confused as hell...).

This is, in my opinion, everything a legendary Mythic should be. Combine a 4/4 body with 4 CM regenerate, and uncounterable, and you've got a solid, solid card. Slap on troll shroud and give him some awesome art and flavor and you've got yourself a mythic. At the same time, getting him doesn't mean you've won; it just means you've likely just secured a strong position, which makes him perfectly balanced. Easy 5/5 for power, style, and execution.

@emperorerror: Yes, "can't be countered" means that trying to use a counterspell such as Cancel or Essence Scatter will have no effect on Thrun (Mindbreak Trap however, which technically exiles and not counters a spell, can hit Thrun - kind of like how Swords to Plowshares can remove indestructible creatures. Same with Time Stop). Hexproof only applies while on the battlefield, it doesn't prevent countermagic.

One thing I actually noticed, the Oracle text on this card describes it as "Hexproof," when actually, it came out after the printing of the hexproof mechanic, specifically with the words "can't be the target of spells etc." and NOT hexproof. As there are now cards which can remove specifically "Hexproof" from cards (Glaring Spotlight), should that not be corrected in the rulings section? (After being verified, of course)

Freaking impossible to beat in commander; or at least very hard if one plays with a more expensive commander. Faced this one in my first EDH and couldn't do shit. Granted, my deck was quite bad, but I had a lot of control spells which couldn't be attached to him. I got obliviated pretty easy as the player gave it unblockable, and/or flying and/or trample (or even all at once) and my commander hp just fell like there was no tommorrow. Easily 5/5 from me.
However, there is glaring spotlight, but getting that card in the beginning is quite impossible. But theoretically it will be the doom of Thrun. Stepping up to the gates of Ravnica will be the very last mistake Thrun will ever do. Or is it?....

@MortisAngelus: If your EDH deck (which is the format with HUGE and efficient creatures) can't deal with one measly 4/4 that's a little hard to get rid of, then yeah it must really suck. He's still a pain in the ass, but he can be neutralised at least. Or held up by a wall (mono green isn't rocking a lot of ways to get rid of them).
Though his EDH decks will have answers to things, and I can tell you he is not going to be a mere 4/4 for most of the game.
Making legendaries not die to clones is possibly one of the best changes for EDH because blue is already so strong. They didn't need to be able to kill other player's commanders even if they have shroud/hexproof or indestructible.
I was honestly sick of seeing phantasmal image kill everyone's commander for just 2 mana even when those commanders have shroud or protection.

The perfect Mono-Timmy Green EDH Commander :)
Would have been Doran, because Ents are pretty darn Timmy-minded (SMASH SMASH Nature Good Combos Bad SMASH) but he's not Mono Green, and for some reason Mono Decks that play well are more intimidating than multi-color decks that simply show good ways to overlap weaknesses with strengths.
Jitte with this is so obnoxious. :P
Needs Spotlight + Terror to kill. That or Wrath, but Wrath is a bit slow in Legacy.
We need a card that says "Destroy all legendary permanents", and it should cost 3 mana, just like Maelstrom Pulse, and be a Mythic.
I know, I know, that seems harsh, right? On both wallets and on the Legendaries? I think such a card would actually be a good addition to Commander though, and if it got put in every Commander Pre-Con one year....that would be a good thing. The thing is, boards locked up with Jittes and Commanders need a "Stop. No." Button. If you want to keep it 4 mana, fine. 5 I think is too much, but it could be fun as a Rainbow Wrath. I think a Rainbow-Wrath would be totally agreeable to everyone, but the card needs to be good enough for Legacy...while Legacy does have the lands to support such a card, it would be difficult to get it through tournaments.

@psychichobo Revised this post in favour of the M14 changes
@MortisAngelus Impossible? No. Decent as card? Yes - 4.5/5 As a general? Moderately Annoying.
@flavioal28 "Officially Untouchable?" Ummm, let me count the ways that he's not:
Alternatively you just run him over with bigger creatures - he's only a 4/4 after all. Notice how few answers I listed for green... most of green's answers to Thrun are bigger creatures.
Alternatively you just ignore him entirely. He's a 4/4... he's a 10-turn clock if you don't have ways of preventing damage (like blockers), 5 if he's the general.
So yeah, if your deck can't deal with a 4/4 uncounterable, hexproofed regenerator it's pretty awful. (For the record I have a friend with a Thrun deck... he whips it out when we all play our "bargain bin" decks. Thrun has a 10% win rate in a group where the best deck is Patron of the Moon with a primary win condition of Hedron Crab)
Well they are all Golgari, so even though they don't have the Zombie subtype like Lotleth Troll they are still sorta not totally trolls anymore, at least not a pure one.

If you're looking for flat-out power, Wolfir Silverheart would like to say hello. If you're looking for a great sideboard card vs. control, Thrun is the way to go. He beats most of the creatures you mentioned in combat if you have {1}{G} open.
However, it seems to me that what you consider to be good are expensive, flashy cards that are known for winning games. I agree, there haven't been a lot of game-winning monogreen fatties lately, but now that Ravnica block is out, it's not a problem because mana fixing is easier and Huntmaster and Voice of Resurgence are still great cards.

Bad. Dies to a Storm Crow and a pump spell (e.g. Progenitus).

I can forgive any troll for having hexproof. Other stuff, not so much. Thrun is really good, but not "Ha ha! Now you die!" good, like many other, stupider, mythic rares. He still interacts with the opponent because he will be attacking or blocking and has no built in evasion. I feel this is an example of good design. Had hexproof been treated cautiously, like it was in Scars and earlier, things wouldn't have gotten so out of hand (looking at you, Invisible Stalker). If hexproof sticks around, it should be relatively rare, and only for green. Creatures are so squishy and fragile, and green relies upon them so heavily. Thrun has great art, but I don't have to tell you that. Also, check out that cane. I bet he was a pimp before all the fine troll ladies died, or whatever. "Where's daddy's money, troe? I know you regenerate! Don't make me get my staff all covered in yo' nasty troll stank." 5/5

Are you sure you don't want him to have indestructible, Wizards? I mean, I can almost interact with him!

this guys going to be destroying me in the new future...
This thing is pretty much impossible to kill, the only foolproof way being -1/-1 counters. Epic, 5/5 easy.
Problem, removal?

Thrun, the last Trollface
"U Mad?"
nevermind
Rhymes with fun,
And if you give him a fireshrieker your opponent will be very well done.
U mad, thrun?
But in all seriousness, I really like this guy. Pulled one in the prerelease to great success. Nigh-unremovable, and a constant threat if you buff him. This card is crazy, but he isnt invincible. -1/-1 counters are his nightmare, and if your opponent has a Contagion Engine or something similar, Thrun will not be a happy troll. Besides that, though, he is incredibly difficult to deal with once he hits the field. a 5/5, easily.
The abundance of -1/-1 counters in the block tends to muddy the water, I could easily see Thrun finding a home in competitive play for years to come.
...That doesn't have infect. This guy is awesome, and the perfect power level to not destroy bigger formats while being kept in check by infect. God help the casual tables this guy hits that don't have much infect.
A 4/4 for 4 that can't be countered, F*ck you, blue
A 4/4 for 4 that can't be countered with regeneration, Awesome
A 4/4 for 4 that can't be countered with regeneration and can't be targeted? Broken, I need one!!
I have opened up two boxes of Mirrodin Besieged looking for this guy, and couldnt find him. I did get some good cards, tho, like Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas, Blightsteel Collossus, Glissa, the Traitor, and Sword of Feast and Famine
This card is so crazy! Equip it with a Loxodon Warhammer, and you have a beast.
Wrath of God
4/5 (I dont think legendary cards deserve 5/5 simply because of the deck construction issues they cause)
.5/5
EDIT: Man, I opened up a fatpack of MBS looking for Tezzeret, and all I got was a foil of this :/ Also thanks for Wrath of God, forgot about that but that's not in standard right?
Also, what you can't see is that his cane...it's holding down a blue player who tried to get in the picture.
No spells, no Phyrexian Juggernaut or other infect stuff, no anything!
1) Play Thrun!!
2) Cast Turn to Mist on him, thn Apocalypse teh boardz.
3) yor oppnnt!
4)...
5) U win teh Gamez
Problem, Old Fogey?
Oh wait. Something can kill it somehow so it sucks.
Thrun, the last trolololololol...
Not much more needs to be said. xD
Very true. I think I will miss "troll shroud", even though it is too crappy a name to keyword.
Certainly there should be a better phrase than "hexproof" shouldn't there? Even "hexshroud" is better. Time will tell.
T1: Llanowar Elves
T2: Birthing Pod
T3: Sacred Wolf
T4: Sac the Wolf, put Thrun into play
T5: Angelic Destiny to create Thrun, the last Troll Angel (and likely the first)
trollface.jpg
Yes, you're right. He dies to Doom Blade. If you target him with Doom Blade yourself. Somehow, I don't think that'll be too much of an issue when using Thrun, the Last Troll.
me- "what about the cudgel troll"
thrun- " there lies not real trolls"
me- "they have troll in there name"
thrun- "i am thrun the last troll shaman"
He's not unkillable and vulnerable to several cards in other decks, but Thrun shrugs off most of the combat tricks of all decks. At a low cost. And can be buffed by you or allies. He's extra fun with lifelink. No green deck should be without it.
Edited as I forgot white.
Black Sun's Zenith.
XD
Elf Combo with Heritage Druid and Nettle Sentinel
UG Madness
Zoo/Naya
Doran Rock
Ghazi-Glare
Vengevine Survival (pretty much banned Survival of the Fittest singlehandedly)
Jund
Eldrazi Ramp
Valakut (don't let the Mountains fool you, this deck is almost mono-green)
Wolf Run Ramp
(Just had to)
This is, in my opinion, everything a legendary Mythic should be.
Not at all.
Snapcaster Mage
Delver of Secrets
Consecrated Sphinx
Griselbrand
Phyrexian Obliterator
Vexing Devil
Hellrider
Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite
Hero of Bladehold
Somehow I'm always expecting Green to get best creatures in every set, Green being the creature color etc... but that rarely happens.
He's like that one annoying friend who just never goes away.
The Legendary tribal creature? This.
Thrun's official theme.
Well, I guess he can't hate his tribemates.
As there are now cards which can remove specifically "Hexproof" from cards (Glaring Spotlight), should that not be corrected in the rulings section? (After being verified, of course)
And it must run no decent board wipes or sacrifice abilities. And I thought every edh deck ran a few board wipes. Man up and fix your deck rather than hating on the card.
He's still a pain in the ass, but he can be neutralised at least. Or held up by a wall (mono green isn't rocking a lot of ways to get rid of them).
Though his EDH decks will have answers to things, and I can tell you he is not going to be a mere 4/4 for most of the game.
What about board wipes? Hallowed Burial and Terminus will annihilate this guy. Wrath of God can kill him too. You could even kill him with Innocent Blood.
Revised this post in favour of the M14 changes
@MortisAngelus
Impossible? No.
Decent as card? Yes - 4.5/5
As a general? Moderately Annoying.
@flavioal28
"Officially Untouchable?" Ummm, let me count the ways that he's not:
White:
Humility+any kill spell, Catastrophe, Wrath of God, Harsh Mercy, Kirtar's Wrath, Mageta the Lion, March of Souls, Retribution of the Meek, Rout, Winds of Rath, Magus of the Tabernacle
Blue:
Ixidron, Evacuate, Cyclonic Rift, Mindbreak Trap, Ertai's Meddling, Time Stop, Wash Out, Giant Albatross
Black:
Damnation, Decree of Pain, Chainer's Edict, Barter in Blood, Innocent Blood, Death Pits of Rath + any damage (block him), Perish, Plague Wind, Black Sun's Zenith, Mutilate, Reiver Demon, Death Cloud, Consuming Vapors, Grotesque Hybrid, Mephitic Ooze, Toxin Sliver, Phage the Untouchable, Grave Pact, Butcher of Malakir
Red:
Jokulhaups, Flamebreak, Obliterate, Hateflayer
Green:
Drop of Honey
Multi:
Endemic Plague+any Clone or Troll, Child of Alara, Mirrorweave+kill spell, Bone Shaman, Savra, Queen of the Golgari
Colorless:
All is Dust, Glaring Spotlight + any kill spell, Tabernacle of the Pendrell Vale (if you have $$$)
Alternatively you just kill his lands and then kill Thrun with any "Destroy all creatures" or "Deal >3 damage to all creatures."
Alternatively you just Mindslaver/Sorin Markov/Word of Command and have your opponent kill him for you.
Alternatively you just run him over with bigger creatures - he's only a 4/4 after all. Notice how few answers I listed for green... most of green's answers to Thrun are bigger creatures.
Alternatively you just ignore him and kill the player. Black and Red should have no problem just ignoring him and punching the player with Disintegrate, Fireball, Tendrils of Agony, Grapeshot, Exsanguinate, or Drain Life, etc.
