With this reprint a million aggro decks screamed with joy, as their favorite aura became available to rape face in all formats once again. This card is a first pick in draft and will probably be a format defining card (once again), not to mention all the casual decks that got just a bit more vicious.

Me? I'm building an auratog/enchantress deck.

@Gruesome-Tree: They decided to reprint it only for the sake of hatred towards you. Also, they said not to tell you that you are bad at rating cards.

Sooooooo glad to see this again. Not only because it is one of the best cards ever printed, but also because the didn't just do what they normally do, slap on a drawback and make it cost 2 more.

Also, I can only imagine how long before it gets a ban in Modern.
P.S. PLEASE DON'T BAN IT IN MODERN. :(

Should've been a rare since it's just that good. Is it too good for standard... Probably not, it's too good for limited but standard should be able to handle it, that being said it will be in pretty much every green deck in standard until it rotates and I highly doubt it will be back in M14

I hate this card so much. Breaks a limited game right in half, and at uncommon status. I'm still in shock that they reprinted this. Why don't we just reprint Counterspell while we're at it?

This card doesn't need specific color fixing, it's nearly impossible to get rid of once it hits play, and it gives the creature trample. As if the card wasn't already good, they snapped trample on it. At the prerelease, it ended games so quickly that it cheapened the experience for me. It's a perfect example of a card that just isn't very fun, or interesting.

Spikes rate it 5/5 because it breaks the game, and returns magic to its 5 turn deathrace.
Everyone else rates it 1/5 because it kills the fun.

That being said, 1/5 for very poor design, and overall brokenness.

The card would have gotten at least a 2/5 rating from me had it been

G
Enchanted creature gets +2/+0.
When Rancor is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, return Rancor to its owner's hand.

Even then, I don't like it. It's really that second clause that makes it so horribly broken. I wouldn't have minded so much if it had read something like:

G
Enchanted creature gets +2/+0 and has trample and shroud.

But no. It's broken as all hell, and gets no sympathy from me.

What a dirty, dirty card. I was actually able to snag 2 of these in the launch day draft. It felt dirty. I felt dirty, but I was also pretty happy. It killed creatures, it allowed me to swing in for free, it won me games. Pay attention kids, Rancor is good and there's a reason why it got bumped up to an uncommon.

@Streamhopper: I run mine with Greater Auramancy, so it gives shroud as well! Isn't the world wonderful?

@greenzero: a ban in Modern? DO NOT SPEAK SUCH BLASPHEMIES. It is the one card that enables my W/G aura deck in there.

Also, Aura Gnarlid is quite fond of this. Kinda reminds me of Gremlins (the 80's movie) whenever I cast it on him.

Considering I almost exclusively play casual, I'm glad they brought back Rancor. I have a friend who's been playing for quite a long time now and his green deck wipes me out every time because of this card (and a few others honestly). Now I actually have the chance to play this without having to search the four corners of the earth.

Plus they brought back Erase, so there's at least some protection from the horror.

I played at a tournament and lost badly to a deck that was (seemingly) built around using this card to bring the pain quickly. Man, this card was scary to see, haha. To be honest, I'm kind of surprised this isn't seeing more play. It fits neatly in any deck with {G} that plans to win by hitting your opponent in the face, offering more power, evasion, the ability to turn your dorks into 3 power trampling suicide troops, and of course it's practically impossible to get rid of the thing, to the point where hitting it with Oblivion Ring is a reasonable play. It's a great card, especially for the sort of deck that is now supported by Strangleroot Geist.

First of all gotta say i love this card! even though i dont use it...
my friend and i need a ruling for a situation we ran into..
if my opponent has a creature with rancor on it and i use O-ring on the creature, will rancor return to his hand, become exiled with the creature, or will something else happen??
ThinkOriginal
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
@mbaxter90 the creature gets exiled, Rancor goes to your graveyard, then comes back to your hand. as far as Rancor knows, the creature died.

personally...I'm shocked I haven't seen this running rampant in every single deck online...more so not even every green deck. it's just soooooooooooooo good...

newer players, meet Rancor. Rancor, meet opponent's face.

7/5

p.s. how scary would the Rancor from Jedi be if he was enchanted with Rancor??

p.p.s one of Rancor's worst enemies is Purify the Grave. found that out the hard way.

Two cool tricks with this card come RTR. 1st, equip Rancor to a Wayfaring Temple for Game winning Populate and Trample damage. 2nd, equip Rancor to a scary Creature your opponent controls with 5> Power. Then use the second ability on Selesnya Charm Targeting that Creature, permanently exiling the Creature for three mana. Rancor then returns back to your hand to spread the love. It's Beautiful.

I've had many arguements with players due to this card's ruling. I'd use Nihil Spellbomb or Tormod's Crypt to get rid of it while it was still in the graveyard, but BEFORE it returned to their hand, and they would get all fussy about it.

I hate having to get confrontational to play the game the right way, when they absolutely refuse to believe you are right despite the fact you are right.

You know what else I hate? When people at the end of the game offer you a handshake, yet the glare of hatred is in their eyes and the handshake is more of a victory pose then any sign of goodwill.

I heard rumors that Rancor was supposed to be a 2 or 3-cost spell, and the missing 1 or 2 was a typo (like Patheitc on Wit's End, or the Serendib Efreet's with the Ifh-Bíff Efreet art and border).

If you look at the cycle of other auras from Urza's Legacy (oh, what a surprise: a rigged card from the Urza block) such as Sluggishness, Cessation, Sleeper's Guile and Slow Motion. you'll see the resemblance.

If you look at them, each of them give a creature something: Can't Attack, Can't Block, Gains Fear, or Pay 2 or sacrifice this. Other than Sluggishness, each of them cost 3.

That being said, I still think a 2Green +2/+0 trample enchantment that goes back to your hand is STILL good.

Also your comment has nothing to do with the card Rancor itself.. it doesn't help you in that situation at all. Maybe your point is that you don't lose Rancor if someone doom blades your creature? If so, it's a very badly made one.

Turns out it wasn't as broken as what people used to think. (Few competitive decks play it these days. Just Bant Hexproof and green-based Gruul / Selesnya aggro, the latter isn't seen a lot) But it remains the best card in those decks which can utilize it, and probably a bit overpowered with Hexproof.

Is it just me, or does trample work really well with Bushido? When Bushido is brought back (Maro has said many times that Bushido will probably be renamed and used in the future, since it was one of the best parts of Kamigawa) we'll have to try Bushido 2.0 and Rancor together.

@DarkSteelSentinel: that doesn't work the way you think it does. When you cast rancor, Horobi's ability will trigger, and the creature will die. Rancor will be countered due to having an illegal target and go to the graveyard. Since it never gets onto the battlefield in the first place, it is never put into a graveyard from the battlefield. Screams from Within does do what you want except it's not voluntary and doesn't cost mana (and will kill Horobi after killing everything else).

This card is so insane. Unless your opponent has instant-speed removal the turn you cast it, you'll get damage and value out of it. Facing down a Rancor'd Kird Ape, or worse, a Porcelain Legionnaire just feels bad all over.

If rancor resolves with no killspell, it is rare that it doesn't cause a two-for-one and get in at least 4 damage in addition. Up there with Vampire Nighthawk, and Path to Exile on the list of "uncommons you're not sure how they got printed"

5/5 for being not 'actually broken' like JTMS or Yawgmoth's Will, yet still feeling totally unfair whenever you have it in play.
