A wrath on a stick, whose ability leaves you with a 3/3 and can go off at instant speed. What's better?

Awesome and afordable. ^_^

While it does have the pro of being a reusable Wrath of God with a 3/3 creature afterward, there are a lot of downsides. The total cost of pulling off the first wrath effect is nine mana and two land card discards. Unless you have a haste ability in effect, your opponent is also going to see this coming for at least one turn. A 3/3 creature with no evasion of pump up abilities is vulnerable to all sorts of removal.
Overall it's a fun card but not as powerful once you examine it.

Does anyone else not get the art at all?

He's called a lion because a lion is a brave person.

He's a great card. You just continuously clear out blockers. Your opponent is pretty much stuck until they find some removal. But I like Martial Coup more.

How come MTG didn't make him a Giant during the Grand Creature Type Update?

Flavorwise, he's the greatest warrior on the battlefield, and at the end of a great battle, he's the last man standing.

I like the instant speed activation of a wrath effect. I also think that madness would be very fun with him (there are white madness cards, y'know). But this card is strictly casual. It can be killed before it does anything, it takes two turns to activate, and you lose two other cards. Ummm.... maybe if I can't find a Wrath or a Day of Judgment I'd run it.....nahhh....

@LordFinbar. I don't know about a lot of downsides, but it's safe to say that probably over 90% of your rare creatures are shroudless and therefore suffer creature removal, so if that's the biggest peeve, well, he is white and white has plenty of instant and or enchantments for color protection. I found the easiest way to cancel out the Spellshaper Legends from the Prophecy series was to just run Squee Goblins for negating the discard effect. Anyway, Madness comes into play not too much further down the road, and a creature that can wrath/trigger 2 choice discards works fine for madness, threshold, lhurgoyf's, Judgement's Incarnations.... Anyway with that kind of versatility I can't help but favor it over the new Mythic Novablast Wurm. Not to mention the fact that Mageta includes a "cannot be regenerated" with its destroy ability.

can you use mageta the lion's ability if you cant discard two cards (you don't have two cards to discard)??

Very powerful ability if you can pay for it. Only risk is that this guy could be killed by a burn spell before you can use his powers.

Art is strikingly similar to that of Perimeter Captain.

Play Mageta, use his ability, then cats Armageddon and you get a 3/3 and no lands, and your opponents gets NOTHING and no lands. And if you have the mana, seal the deal with a Kismet before you destroy everyones lands. If you are facing this threat yourself, you can simply play a Terra Eternal...but youll still lose all your creatures. OR you could use the universal solution to pretty much everything...*drum roll* Counterspell

That is basically the most terrifying and impressive activated ability on any creature in history.

5 cmc for the creature and 4 cmc and 2 discard in order to activate wrath effect . .
With that cost, it should be little bit bigger . . like 4/4?
I probably am not rating this fairly because I haven't played this guy when this was printed . .
but by today's standard it would be 4/4 or may be even 5/5 for that cost.
4/5 for the instant speed Wrath of God effect though.

Needs a subtype, like knight or soldier as well as spellshaper. I based a whole deck around this guy and token generation. Excellent if you have reusable ways to return important creatures to your hand.

My friends and I used to call him "The Tour Guide" because when I saw this art for the first time I thought, "...And over here we have the Keldon army. Watch your step, everyone."

Then of course I read his ability to insta-wrath, and stopped laughing.

Needs to be a Human Spellshaper Cat.

Since his errata reads human spellshaper, he now has great interactions with Angelic Overseer.

I don't really feel like complaining about his p/t stats with that activated ability. Instead, I would just like to note the synergy with both Twilight Shepherd and, as someone pointed out, Angelic Overseer. 4/5 for the ability and the fact that he epitomizes white in so many ways.

Haha. I was in a 6 way game where nobody died yet. I had 12 land. I activated his ability and played biorhythm.

This could have taken Rafiq's spot in From the Vault: Legends. Except that I have no recollection of his importance as a character in stories.

I haven't finished the Great Weatherlight Saga, but still, I know most of the Crew and a bunch of highlights so if I haven't seen his name then he might just have not been very important. :/

Then again, as a story character I have no clue about anything to do with Visara the Dreadful either, I just know she's great to kill people with. Actually why the ruddy blinking stinking bleeding flying nine hells didn't Phage the Untouchable get Visara's place? o.O

Now that I just think of it....seems insane. Cuz she's like what you expect from Mythic Rare Legendaries now: Crucial to the story AND just happens to totally kick your ass too.

Well, hopefully Commander's Toolbox will see some of these given the reprints they deserve. There are actually not an infinite plethora of extraordinary Legends from before Mirrodin Block, so you'd think all of them would get some kind of attention between Time Spiral, FTV: Legends, and Commander's Arsenal.

Heckler: "Hey, Mageta! What's the difference between a spellshaper and a wizard?"

Mageta: "Well, uh..." WRATHS THE BOARD

Mageta: "...I've never known a wizard who could survive that."

(There is no applause because the audience is dead.)

I like to imagine he personally kills every single creature, one by one, with his bare hands. Or by crushing them under his barrel chest.

"Wow, that's a lot of necks! Gonna enjoy snapping all of those!"

"Oh, a giant flying squid thing. Just need to... JUMP and haha! Looks like calamari for dinner tonight!"

"Look, sorry honey, it's just business. No hard feelings!"

Is a repeatable Wrath of God worth two cards a pop on a creature? At first look I thought no, but gatherer rating disagrees.

Honestly I would rather just run wrath of god.... 3.5/5

There is Wrath of God, and then there's Wrath of Mageta. Who's the stronger one? Well, let me put it that way: God can't kill Norin the Wary...

Ehh.. I understand it's a repeatable wrath of god and that's nice but the discard 2 cards is too painful for me. There isnt enough white card draw to make me play this card and those 2 cards set me back too much.

Due to the wording, you could have Mirror Gallery out and Clone'd Mageta to have a small army of him that cannot die from his ability for having the same name.

@Anaxie1 That won't work. When a card mentions its own name, it refers to the card itself, not every card with that name. If it had said "Destroy all creatures except for creatures named Mageta the Lion." it would have worked the way you said.
