Out of all the counter spells they had to choose to replace mana leak in standard, they chose THIS?... Pretty good choice, all things considered

Why do they have this and not remove soul? They are identical and remove soul existed first.

Yeah, the meta right now is very, very creature heavy, so this isn't an altogether bad choice for a Mana Leak replacement. We also have Negate and Rewind, so I'm happy with my countering options. Also, Ravnica should produce some interesting countering ability.

Flavor-wise, many of the creatures that we summon to do combat for us do not actually have souls. I mean, how exactly is Remove Soul gonna get rid of a Vampire?

I guess someone wanted to remove more than 4 souls.
4 counterspells, 4 Cancels, 4 remove souls, 4 this, 4 control magic, 4 absorb, 4 wall of denial...
4 dominate, 4 Scriviner, 4 clones. 13 islands 6 plains, one elixir of immortality. Come at me bro.

Mana Leak left standard because they reprinted the "broken" free counterspell known as Rewind
Both of them together would have kept turns 2-5 on lockdown which is far too powerfull on it's own, so they gave blue Negate and Essence Scatter so that blue would have to metagame instead of just having the best possible counter for games 1 and 2
Honestly, it's like you people don't even realize the subtle balance act that comes with every new edition set.

Bah. Hate this card. Fortunately things are still good for blue in Standard, so I'm not gonna complain too much. ...But I still hate it.

I really like the combination of card concept, card name and art here. Deny your opponent's thingies but in a happy hippie way. =D
strong pont about this card that it can couter target creature spell but it dos not say ability u can not say that a creature with an ability is a spell its not a spell its an ability ucant stop an a ability not unless youhave the cards to do so like circle of protections or eney others that can provint this card or eney other cards like this 1 from doing it worst on a player or players but othr then that its a good card

There are a lot of creatures around right now that need to be countered so this card will see a lot of play from pros like me.

Hmm I feel they should have gone the way they did with Despise on this one; that is I think they should have made a card that says "Counter target creature or planeswalker spell." Although I'm not sure the Wizards know quite yet where planeswalker removal lies on the color pie...

Real pros won't feel the need to say they are pros.

@jsttu: Because Remove Soul looks and sounds way too black to be blue.
@pedrodyl: To be fair, this is a counter, not removal. The effects remain in their usual colors: discarding a planeswalker is black, countering a planeswalker is blue, destroying a planeswalker is black, etc.

Can I play with Remove Soul in place of this in standard just because it looks cooler? can we get a gatherer revision because its strictly the same card?!

I used to run this counterspell like you, but then I took a cavern to the soul.
