This monster single handedly won me half my games at the prerelease.
I thought it was ok... then I read the second ability again, and now I see how much better it is... I thought it just said that whenever a creature an opponent controlled was put into the graveyard that turn, then they lost 2 life... being able to have them chump and still lose 2 life is great... it could be great in my deck with lots of kill... but... I'm still on the fence about this guy... I get it, he's great, he;ll be amazing in limited, the king of casual black decks, and probably a card mono-black EDH players will want to get their hands on... but he's not something Im sold on for constructed... we already have some good finishers for MBC in Wurmcoil Engine and Grave Titan, and honestly, I'm not quite sure he measures up to either of them...
I guess only time will tell, but for now, I'm not making room for him in my MBC...

@ infernox10 Massacre Wurm's -2/-2 is not a static ability, it is triggered. And under rule 611.2c in the comprehensive rules pdf, the set of objects it affects is determined when the effect begins, and does not change.
In short it only affects creatures in play when the ability resolves. Creatures that enter play later that turn are unaffected.

Though I agree this is a very powerful card, it is a perfect example of bad card design. First I'd like to point out that for 3 colorless and 3 black you get a static ability, a comes into play ability, 6 power, and 5 toughness. Usually an ability adds one extra mana to the cost unless it has an excessively high cost or a large number of colored mana symbols, this has neither. So without even looking at what it does you can agree that it is very aggressively costed. Now take a look at it's come into play ability-creatures your opponents control get -2/-2 until the end of turn. For a goblin/saproling/zombie/eldrazi/myr/elf/knight or even a sliver deck this is basically a one sided wrath of god. Throw its static ability in and it typically kills any of those decks just by being played. So by extension what this card does is punishes players for using certain types of decks by literally turning the win conditions into auto lose game conditions. Many would argue that because its a turn 6 creature you should have won by then, what they aren't considering is that for one black mana, this can be hardcasted on turn 4 with dark ritual. Another good argument for Massacre Wurm is that every color has advantages over other colors and disadvantages against certain colors. But this allows for no response, this has no drawback. Development should have considered that while none of the effects printed on the card are essentially unfair, printing the win condition and the method on one cars is awfully unfair.
But that is not enough, Black has also got best creature token generators: Bitterblossom, Grave Titan and even Army of the Damned (though AotD is mostly for casual play at least for now).
Isn't it counterproductive to put best removal and best removal targets in same single color? Not to even mention that Black also has got best 'raise dead' -effects in the game.
Green is often mentioned as "the creature color" but it really can't match Black's arsenal.

★★★★☆ (4.0/5.0)(9 votes)
I really liked this card. Makes me sad my kittens vomited all over my black deck. don't ask.
@ Ulixes_Pyr: A perfect example of bad card design? So I guess that you know more about how efficient cards should be then the people that ACTUALLY CREATED THE GAME? They are the people who made the rules, so naturally they're also the people who can rewrite them if they think the game needs it. A while ago, Wizards decided that big creatures needed to be a viable win condition. (This first started back in Onslaught Block, when they decided to not reprint Counterspell and printed Akroma.) Since then, Wizards has been printing more and more powerful high cost creatures, until they printed the Titans, when they established that good 6 mana creatures should have the potential (but won't necessarily) to take over 1v1 games by themselves.
Under this design philosophy, Massacre Wurm is right at home. Of course it can mean game over for some decks, but so can a Pyroclasm or a Day of Judgement, both of which cost much less mana and require less commitments then the wurm. Against non-Wenie decks, Massacre Wurm underperforms, even when compared to some cards of a lower rarity. So Wurm is a situational card at best, and there are cheaper alternatives that do roughly the same job. Cards like Choke I would say are not well designed, since they are unfun as well as good, but 6 mana for a card that can win the game in a rather painless fashion, (in that it's not drawn out) but is not very good against many other decks is perfectly fine.
Also the complaint that it's too good with ritual is similar to saying that any 4 drop is poorly designed because you can play it turn 1 with Black Lotus. Ritual is a fundamentally broken card, which is why it hasn't been seriously reprinted in ages. Saying a card is too good because of it's interaction with it isn't because that card is too good but because Ritual is too good.
@AncientTimer: Funnily enough, none of the creatures that you listed are anywhere near as scary as Primeval Titan, which can win games just by entering the battlefield. Also, have you completely forgotten about Tarmogoyf and Knight of the Reliquary? Every color has gotten it's share of good cards recently, so singling out black is silly. Also, black doesn't have the best spot removal in any format that Swords to Plowshares or Path to Exile is legal. On top of that, black can't really deal with anything other then creatures.
Raise Dead is black's thing. Making them any other color (With an exception to green and possibly white) is a massive violation of the color pie. Raise dead isn't too good, anyway.
I'd have to look at the numbers, but I'm pretty sure that as of this moment, black is the least played color in Standard, as it doesn't offer much outside of Doom Blade, Grave Titan, Bloodline Keeper, and paying mana for Dismember and Surgical Extraction. So your worries of black being too good are probably a bit off.

I love how there is so much hate for a card that is essentially worthless against most, if not all control decks, as well as being negated by any "Each creature gets +2/+2" effects. It is not an amazing card, unless it is played early, but it loses allot of its power in the late game.
However, it is no were as ridiculous as Wurmcoil, which i will remind you all is the same cost as this but is a 6/6 with lifelink, death touch and the ability to spawn smaller versions of its self. This card is situational at best, is not the best card in any format, and is in reality not broken at all.
This card brought me the best moment in magic I've ever had. My opponent had use some type of unlimited mana three card trick with prototype portal and then made 70 million cat tokens with white sun zenith. He was going to hit me next turn and kill me and then I drew this baby. If only tokens hit the graveyard.
Not *quite* 'Every Black Deck Ever', but certainly a very fun Icon of the Color that might deserve a reprint somewhere down the road.
Question: do reprints have to keep their watermarks? Someone look up some of those Ravnica cards and try to get an answer on that. If not, then this is perfectly reprintable. Mythics occasionally get reprinted. Not often, but it's definitely happened.

So, a one-sided double Liability on a 6/5 body who casts a one-sided Infest when he hits the board for 6? Against any good token or weenie deck this should either rip them a new one or end the game entirely. 10 2/2 or 1/1 tokens and/or creatures and it's GG. Not to mention the 6/5 beatstick you now have that will most likely take out a creature with each subsequent attack.
Play a Dark Ritual and this bad boy on turn 4 and it completely stops elf/goblin/soldier decks, and since they are usually weenie synergy decks, nothing they can cast on the next turn can stop that 6/5 body since they probably lost all the bonus creatures when you cast him. Its usually game over unless they have some kind of removal, like an Oblivion Ring or Lignify.
Excellent CMC vs body and effect.

Immerwolf wouldn't have mattered at all unless you had an instant-speed buff in hand to save it, since it doesn't buff itself. Wurm resolves, -2/-2 kills the Immerwolf, then once that hits the graveyard its buff disappears and all the wolf tokens die. Still game.
The tendency of captains to have two toughness is one of the biggest reasons to use this card. Goblin Chieftain, Drogskol Captain, Immerwolf, etc... This is also great against cards whose toughness is equal to the number of creatures you control like Geist-Honored Monk for the same reason. They can be a 6/6 and you'll still kill them if you can take out at least four other creatures before end of turn.

Against fast token/weenie decks he can win the game just by hitting the field, while Norn let's my other critters win. Depends on which route i want to go. Hmmm...

Amazing card for multiplayer, the few times I've seen this come down in EDH at least someone died, more often than not at least 2 out of four :P
I always love it when there's a single Lord on the field, buffing everyone to X/3's, and he dies to a pestilence or infest effect; do you realize how cool that is image wise?
They see their leader die a horrible death from this plague or whatever, then each of them catch it and die with him, each weakening their summoner/leader (you) with their sickness.

I guess I have a little bit of a love affair with Massacre Wurm.
When I started playing, I used to just buy packs. I started with Mirrodin Besieged, but didn't really buy into New Phyrexia or Scars. Somehow, out of my first 10 packs, I opened 3 Wurms. I don't know how, but it happened. From that moment on, I knew it was going to be something else.
There have been times when I could've traded it for something of more value. Sure, Blightsteel is a more valuable card. I'm not going to act stupid in front of cold, hard facts. But there have been so many more times when I've felt good about playing Massacre Wurm over almost anything else. It stalls boardwipes. It weakens tokens. It is really valuable when copied.
Long story short, it's a great creature that's fairly costed and given a fair rarity.

~ Infest
~ Magnetic Mine's without the "artifact" part
~ And a 6/5 body
:D
For a Geth, Lord of the Vault Mana cost, I'm pretty sure I would want to give away ALL mah Geths (regrettably, I have a lot) for at the very least one of these!!
Dx
Honestly any token/weenie deck will spontaneously combust when this hits the table.
DISFIGURE EVERYTHING.
- Red Mage watching his goblins and memnites getting devoured by the Massacre Wurm.
That last ability is what makes you cry. Consider the Wurm showed up and eat your 'below 2 toughness' whinnies and watch you sober 2 life down for each creatures devoured this way.
@Artifacted Exactly my thoughts.
i won 3 matches tnx to this :D
@ infernox10
Massacre Wurm's -2/-2 is not a static ability, it is triggered.
And under rule 611.2c in the comprehensive rules pdf, the set of objects it affects is determined when the effect begins, and does not change.
In short it only affects creatures in play when the ability resolves.
Creatures that enter play later that turn are unaffected.
Like the say in EDH: "Go big or go home."
:)
Mogg Infestation.
This thing is BEAST, and WILL see constructed play, even if it's only as sideboard against weenies. This is black's Gideon Jura when it comes to answering aggro strategies, a hard-to-recover from threat on wheels...or whatever it uses to move.
And it's "opponent" instead of Magnetic Mine's "player."
And yet...it is not impossible to win from this. Just hilariously unlikely, since you're losing anywhere from two to a million creatures (and losing double that much life).
That's what massacre is all about.
And the life your opponent loses to this card, OHHH!
Flash
Wurm
-2/-2
and then the lose two life ability adds from the trigger of creatures entering the graveyard
wurm dies
??
Great card, obviously...
@Just1Micky: They do. First they hit the graveyard, and then they disappear.
- WoTC
This card is great. Black wurms that don't suck are always interesting to see, and this bro is no exception. Wonderful target for a kicked Rites of Replication. Your guys get -10/-10 and you lose 12 life for each guy that can't handle that? Assuming your first wurm didn't just come out that turn. More fun if the original wurm was theirs and you hit them with a mighty backfire.
I agree with what you wrote here.
In addition I have a problem with the fact that Black has got best creature removal in the game and is also getting best creatures. WotC is really pushing Black creatures over all curves. Examples are numerous: Phyrexian Obliterator, Abyssal Persecutor, Vampire Nighthawk, Bloodgift Demon, Vampire Nocturnus, Dark Confidant, etc...
Green is often mentioned as "the creature color" but it really can't match Black's arsenal.
don't ask.
That's gonna leave a mark.
Example:
your opponent has crown of empires, thrown of empires and scepter of empires. they have a f***-ton of soldiers. drop massacre wurm. Win.
However, it is no were as ridiculous as Wurmcoil, which i will remind you all is the same cost as this but is a 6/6 with lifelink, death touch and the ability to spawn smaller versions of its self. This card is situational at best, is not the best card in any format, and is in reality not broken at all.
Oops.
Tokens do hit the graveyard.

Or Conjurer's Closet.
4.5/5
Well, not exactly, but I'll take this bad boy over his retarded brothers Wurmcoil Engine and Phyrexian Obliderator any day of the week.
You: Oh no, so many pegasi, what will I ever d-Massacre Wurm.
Opponent: :c
In a lot of ways, he is very similar to Elesh Norn, but is more flavorful and more appropriately costed for black. He was the first mythic rare I pulled and I pulled a holo too. It wasn't until I started playing EDH that I found a deck for him. I use him in Mimeoplasm as a big body and potentially lethal effect for Tyrannosaurus Alan to copy.
4.0 - Between power and flavor this guy is all win.
Even better when you give everyone plenty of land to feed to Alliance. In a multiplayer format, I play this as W/B/G. Wait a few turns before dropping Collective Voyage and make people happy for a moment. Amuse them even more with Alliance of Arms now that they have lots of land. THEN drop the wurm and watch smiles turn upside down.
They see their leader die a horrible death from this plague or whatever, then each of them catch it and die with him, each weakening their summoner/leader (you) with their sickness.
Netherborn Phalanx tutors this card but also answers similar sorts of decks.
Your opponent's that is!
