Why is this card rated so low?
She is a 1/2 two-drop who has a Steelshaper's Gift cip/etb effect, that makes this card already really powerful - compare her to Elvish Visionary, she's not even just a 1/2 cantrip, she can get your equipment of choice! Tutor cards for two mana are awesome, those which provide a creature at the same time are insane!
But that's still not everything, you can even use her as an Elvish Piper for equipents to put an expensive one on the battlefield with her second ability - possibly the one you just put into your hand with her.
And still, despite all that she just requires a single white mana - what more could you ask for?

Aside from Stonehewer Giant, Steelshaper Apprentice got once more overshadowed, this time by a cheaper alternative.

Oh, and you can of course flicker her to get more equipments.
Seriously guys, this card has great potential and is certainly worth more than 3 Stars.

So underrated. The first ability is really, really good. 1W for a 1/2 that gives you card advantage through a TUTOR and can play equipment cards for 1W at instant speed? Just very good.

This is EXACTLY what an equipment based Kor deck needed to do well.
Now Kor decks can actually stand a chance instead of relying on lucky topdecks and having to run far too many equipments just to have a chance to draw them and wasting resources on Armament Master.

Underrated?!?!? HOWW??? I dont know anyone that hates this card (unless they are playing against it) You dont even need to put her in a Kor deck. So now you have 8 chances of getting a Umezawa's Jitte or Loxodon Warhammer or Basilisk Collar or a Behemoth Sledge

I don't agree with the low rating but like all the winner cards for Kor with exception of the Devout Lightcaster or Kor Firewalker this little nasty usually faces the wrong end of a bolt or deathmark quick. Other than that, it works so well with Kor/Equipment. I would say the best way to protect her if you is to bring out a fast flyer from Kor as a Bolt Magnet. Most decks don't have early flyers and they will eat the bolts reducing the chance of losing her as she drops. Now if you can get a Whispersilk Cloak or Magebane Armor on her fast then you are golden.

CAW Blade needs to die. Seriously. And this card along with it.

"Hey guys, lets print a card that searches for equipment and lets you play them for 2!"
"Sweet, love it!"

few months later...

"Hey guys, I was looking over Scars block, and I noticed that we have a lot of powerful equipments planned. What about that Stoneforge thing we printed in Worldwake?"
"nah, forget about it. Players are too silly to remember that piece of crap."

Why, Wizards, why would you make a block with powerful equipment after printing something like this?

It beat up on caw blade... honestly rotation was just a few months away. wizards go to helllllllllllllllllllllllll..... there were some decks that beat up on caw blade.... boros, the new RDW, a lot of decks with black ruined UW because of the hand control and vengevine decks did work... anyone ever think that its win % was so high because so many people at major tourney's play the deck?

@ Rhunic_32

U Mad, Bro?

They banned Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Stoneforge due to a terrible Standard environment. Whenever cards overdominate, they have to be banned to balance out the game.

Wizards did what they had to do to fix Standard. Sure, rotation is a few months away, but in between now and then, there are still tournaments to be held.

Hey look- they printed a Tinker-belle.

(I'm kind of shocked noone else seems to have thought of that yet, lol.)

But seriously, far more obviously and blatantly broken than Jace, who was merely obviously and blatantly great, but difficult to fully break with the genious way that Wizards has (up til now) executed on making the whole Planeswalker card-type inherently powerful, yet also inherently fair.

Tinkerbelle, on the other hand, should have destroyed Standard right out of the gates. Her story is really a hell of a lot more like old scary cards that we look back and think 'Wizards did WHAT?!' and then we read Tournament Reports from the Era and think 'wait, it took them HOW LONG to stop calling that card crap?' Just shows that for a while there definitely was a completely valid complain of power-creep in the game, from Faeries to Jund to Valakut and that Stoneforge was, at first, 'leveling the playing field.' It almost pains to me to even think that sentence, let alone write it, but we need to be honest- it's still pretty true.

What I find funny is people saying that Caw-Blade is dead when neither the Caw nor the Blade have been banned. Tinkerbelle needed to die so badly, no doubts there because she's a trainwreck on steroids anywhere near anything related to FRIGGIN. MIRRODIN. (most broken plane ever. the only broken part of Dominaria is Tolaria. Mirrodin, the PLANE, is just about completely broken.)

But I think there were two entire better options to ban other other than Stoneforge than Jace. Namely, Caw and Blade. Banning a common, are you serious? Skullclamp was an uncommon, so yes it's fair to at least talk about, whether you agree with me or not. Hopefully the case is much clearer for banning Sword of Feast and Famine. That is the only new Sword that really well and truly lived up to the legacy of the original two. Sick, sick, sick. Not to mention, Jace will naturally leave Standard soon. Waste of a ban IMO. Sword of Feast and Famine may wreck Innistrad as easily as Stoneforge wrecked Mirrodin. Something to think about.

Hopefully it's only a matter of time before this card receives a Legacy ban.

When I go to a tournament with 84 people in it, I guess it's sort of useful to know that 60+ will be playing Stoneforge Mystic combos, but wasn't that exactly why Survival of the Fittest got ban-canned?

EDIT: GAH!! WHY ARE YOU ALL SELLING YOUR PLAYSETS FOR UNDER $5 ON EBAY??? ??? ??? Eight of the top sixteen Legacy decks in the latest SCG Open played four Stoneforge! (That was mid-August! The ink is barely dry on their winnings announcements!)

... do you all know something I don't about Stoneforge's future in Legacy?

Ah heck, whatever. I intend to bid on every Stoneforge auction I can find and afford, until the Legacy hammer comes down or the price revives. Either I get a couple hundred cheap-ish copies of a bum card and arts-n-crafts them into a giant Stoneforged Banhammer artpiece after Mystic receives a legacy ban (in which case I promise to post a link to pics of it), or I recoup massive windfall from the price picking up again.

Banned along with the Mind Sculptor. I think Jace deserved his banning from the start but Stonforge was just supposed to be a good card to help out the ill-fated Kor Tribal deck. I don't think wizards printed her with tournament play in mind like they did Jace.

@buddy2

Dude you're an idiot. Being someone who has some experience using her as well as Elbrus, let me tell you EXACTLY how scary she gets.

It doesn't matter what the hell happens to her after she's been dropped. Tutoring is all she's needed for as she's usually tutoring is a sword that can be dropped the turn after. If I don't think she'll be killed immediately, I'll tutor Batterskull or Elbrus so I can cheat it out next turn. By turn 3, I can drop and equip Elbrus on a Birds of Paradise and hit you for the transformation, or drop a Batterskull and have a 4/4 vigilance lifelink beatstick that, by experience, ALWAYS eats up the removal before Stoneforge Mystic does. She dies? I'm OVERJOYED because I can trigger the EtB again with Sun Titan in a couple turns and tutor more things out.

Wanna kill Elbrus' Transformation? Karakas the creature and re-drop Elbrus and try again. Swords to Plowshares in response to gain 13+ life.

Besides, if she DOES die before she drops an equipment? Puresteel Paladin picks up where she left off until Sun Titan brings her back or Primeval Titan ramps enough to where mana problems are gone.

Seriously, try USING it or FACING it in a competent deck before pulling the cliche'd "Dies To Removal/Crappy Card" argument. There's a reason this thing's banned in modern/Standard (when it was)

To all the people who complain about this card:

There's something called "removal", maybe you've heard of it? If not, then don't expect to win any games anyway. Seriously, if you don't play Lightning Bolt, Swords to Plowshares, Smother, or Dismember, among many other options, then your deck is either very bad or a combo deck that doesn't care what its opponent does. If your deck is very bad, then YOUR DECK IS VERY BAD. It isn't going to win anyway. If you're playing a combo deck, then you should be much more worried about their Force of Will than their Stoneforge. Let them have a Batterskull, you are just going to hit them for 30 with a Tendrils of Agony or make them draw 60 cards with a Blue Sun's Zenith.

In addition to removal, there is also Spell Snare, Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, Daze, Stifle, and Force of Will that prevent it from hitting the table.

And you can also play Ancient Grudge, Pithing Needle, or Krosan Grip (excellent) to deal with the equipment. You can even use Green Sun's Zenith to tutor for a Qasali Pridemage.

There is a fundamental difference between this and Survival of the Fittest. Survival is a 2 mana ENCHANTMENT (which no one maindecks removal for) that won you the game if you untapped with it. By contrast, Stoneforge Mystic is a 2 mana CREATURE (which everyone should maindeck removal for) that gives you a significant advantage if you untap with it. It is entirely possible to lose the game after untapping with a Stoneforge, and it happens often enough.

There is no reason to have this card banned in Modern, let alone Legacy. Hopefully some more competent people will start working at the DCI so that the deserved unban happens.

PS: There is no way that Elbrus, the Binding Blade is going to see play outside of EDH (and it may not even be playable there). Bone Saw is already terrible, why would I want to pay 7 mana for it?

Edit @ Warioman

I have played extensively with this card. I probably know far more about it than you, judging by the way you write. I really couldn't care less about kitchen table Magic, since it doesn't even begin to compare to tournaments in terms of fun.

Let me be perfectly clear: my perspective when writing is that of the most extreme example of a competitive player. All I want is a deck that has answers and firepower and runs smoothly and consistently (I prefer blue-based control, but I really will take any interactive deck with a strong late game). If you care about "originality" or "creativity" in deck building, then my posts are not for you. Caw Blade Standard was actually a very fun format because the mirror match involved as close to zero luck as you can possibly get. The deck was so consistent that every match came down to who made better plays.

My point was that so many people complain about how powerful this card is without putting even the slightest bit of effort into combating it. You're obviously not talking about competitive play given the cards you named as part of your deck; and that's just more to my point: so-called "casual" decks tend to be very, very bad, and so they aren't worthy of comparison to any tournament deck. This card is absolutely not overpowered in Legacy, because the format has a lot of ways to answer it while still setting your own clock.

PS. It's been about six weeks and Elbrus, the Binding Blade really did see zero play in Legacy. Just wanted to say "I told you so."

Seriously, have you not played standard in that era besides using caw blade? do you know how ridiculous it was? This card and Jace, the Mind Sculptor warped standard so badly WOTC had no choice but to ban them. Caw blade was too good and too powerful. It had answers to everything and could keep up with any deck. It wasnt uncommon to have 8 out of the 10 top places in any competition to be caw blade or a variant of it, the only other remote contenders were splinter-twin and MBC decks.

Perhaps you are a spike who cares for nothing except winning. IMO you're the kind of people killing standard and making MTG a very unfun and "whoever has more money wins" game.
Wurmcaller
★★★☆☆ (3.8/5.0) (11 votes)
@Buddy2-

You are the worst player. I hope I never have to face you in a game because I will gladly scoop my terribly constructed nausea inducing casual deck than buy the cards necessary to play a decent game with your steroids enhanced super deck with all the best spike cards.

You say Cawblade was fun for you because it was consistent. That's why it was bad to pretty much anyone who didn't share that opinion. I believe variety in a deck is fun, many share that opinion. I guess the DCI agreed because they banned Stoneforge for it. They didn't ban Stoneforge because it was a difficult card to beat. It was banned because it wasn't enjoyable to beat for most people. Cawblade ruined friendships.

There is nothing wrong with wanting your deck to win. There is also nothing wrong with wanting to play with friends with cards you got from packs or trades rather than buying all the best cards online. You're allowed to enjoy tournaments more than casual play, but it's not objective like you apparently believe it to be. But to come in and say that us dirty peons who want to make original decks are lower than those who can afford to make the optimal decks available is just offensive.

Does anybody ever play with you outside of tournaments? Because I could barely stand your selfish, condescending attitude in that comment and I can't imagine playing a game with you.

I'm not mad. I pity you. You are a sad person.

a 2-drop that attracts removal is a problem. Plus even if you remove it, it already tutored for an equipment. even tarmogoyf and dark confidant do nothing if you immediately kill them (then again, they do way more than stoneforge the longer they stay alive).

I agree that it's fine in legacy, but it was way too powerful in standard, and unbanning it in modern is questionable; jitte and the 5 swords still exist. steelshaper's gift is a completely playable card in modern, and stoneforge is (almost) strictly better.

Also, wizards was supposed to know that tutors are not supposed to be 2 mana. Demonic tutor is banned for a reason. Look at cards like fabricate, Idyllic tutor, even other conditional tutors like trinket mage, treasure mage, fierce empath, and imperial recruiter. They are ALL 3 mana. And they only put the card in your hand, two of them don't even give you a body, and NONE of them have the ability to save you mana by putting the tutored card directly into play at instant speed.

Seriously, if stoneforge cost 2W and had only the first ability, it would still be a good card.

Also, her price is shooting through the roof, she's at 40$ now and probably sill rising. If Salient was patient enough, they're rich now. ;)

Increasing the casting cost by 1 would have lead to a much better standard enviorment. This card is just beyond broken. Its a tutor which also threatens making powerful equipment flash, uncounterable, and cheap cost. Its also ping resistant.

They really need to test their cards more. This along with Jace warped the standard environment and led a lot of people away from magic.

Of course nobody got fired for doing such a terrible job at balancing, (even though they probably should have). Hopefully they playtest cards out more in the future, and go beyond there inner circle which obviously is terrible at balancing, or else they wouldnt approve of such a broken card.

No, steelshapers gift isn't a good replacement, gift doesn't cheat batterskull into play uncounterably at instant speed after a turn. Then block the next turn.

Hehe, Remember when she was a Bargin Bin Rare...

One of my favorite cards, in one of my favorite decks ever *Stoneblade*, I'm sad shes banned in modern, but I understand why

She was totally the scourge of Standard, far more then big brother JtMS, and has diffidently proven her worth in Legacy, and fringe play in Vintage

And I thought the Batterwitch was a Merfolk.
