Thinking of creating an insane combo out of this. Use opalescence to make it a 5/5, then followed footsteps. Next turn you get 2 token copies. The turn after you get 8. Three turns after setting it up, you gain 2048 more copies. Throw in Soul Warden or Essence Warden and that might as well be game.
So much for subpar combos.

Most modular Johnny card ever! Sarkhan Vol with this thing is nuts in casual multiplayer.
This card is used best in conjunction with mycoloth in a devour deck cause it doubles a devour 2 and you get even more saprolings to devour for the next turn but it also doubles the amount of saprolings you get on your upkeep so if you devour 5 creatures you get 20 +1/+1 counters on this creature mycoloths ability makes that many saprolings to play but wait doubling season doubles that so you will spawn 40 saprolings that upkeep. I have a deck with 2 mycoloths but after a while ill bring out a skull muncher with devour 2 and i get 1 life for every +1/+1 counter i double the counters for devour 2 and then double that I have ended up with 1500 life in one game due to this card I feel this card should be placed in every devour deck

A very lovely Johnny card. It's even more interesting since it can deal with loyality counters on Planeswalkers. Ajani Goldmane and Sarkhan Vol are currently the most fun fellows for this card - two Serra Avatar tokens or eight 4/4 Dragon flyers and my Planeswalker stays on the field with 2 loyality counters nonetheless? Yes, please.
And already before those got introduced, you had fun times playing this card with other counter and/or token heavy cards, such as Pentavus, Sekki, Seasons' Guide or Lightning Coils. Cards dealing with Charge Counters also do fine with this enchantment, such as Darksteel Reactor, although i wouldn't advise playing these in a general Doubling Season deck. Simple token generating spells like Beacon of Creation or Call of the Herd also do a job, as well as Arcbound creatures with Modular or Simic creatures with Graft, Hydra and Fungus creatures or those with Devour - especially Mycoloth since he also produces tokens as well.
And if you're looking for a effect-related creature, try out Gilder Bairn (which in conjunction with this enchantment does an even better job.
Yet i can't remember players being permanents, therefore no, cards dealing with poison counters are pretty much the only thing that won't work with this card, Jokergius.

Is anyone else scared of this card? I mean there are so many things that it works well with. Cradle of vitality Any Planeswalker Mycoloth Any Devour
If you can manage to keep it on the field for a turn that is >.>
Quickest I've seen so far is Pentavus, with all the Naya cards that play cards without their mana cost, you could have Pentavus as a 20/20 creature by its second turn on the field easy.

Doubling season + Disciple of the Vault + Spawning pit + dross scorpion + gilded lotus = infinite damage.
1) Tap gilded lotus for 3 mana 2) Sacrifice any artifact creature besides dross golem. a) Gilded lotus untaps so you may tap it again b) Spawning pit gets 2 counters on it 3) tap gilded lotus for mana again 4) Remove 2 counters on spawning pit to put 2 creatures into play. 5) Sacrifice 1 of them to put 2 charge counters on spawning pit and untap gilded lotus. 6) repeat.
Things to remember: Tokens do hit the graveyard once before disappearing from existence. Every time you sacrifice a token your opponent takes 1 damage. Even without disciple of the vault, you still get infinite 2/2 creatures because every time you sacrifice 1, you get 2 and you only need to sacrifice one of those to get another 2 more out.
I hope that works aha

@ gamer09631: This is a good idea. My question is, are you sure the growth will be exponential like you propose? Or would it be linear? I would assume the latter, so instead of 8 (2^3) tokens on the second turn after Footsteps is played, you'd get 6 (2 x 3), and then instead of 2048 (2^11) on the third turn you'd get 18 (2 x 9), etc. etc.
I could be wrong of course, but it just seems to me that they'd each apply their effect separately (linear) and not build on the previous effect (exponential). Does anybody know exactly what would happen here? And if you do know, how do you know? Has anybody tried this combo on MTGO for example?
There's nothing like a 14/14 prevent-all-damage lifelinking trampler for 7 mana!

I have a question about how this card works. If I double the counters on a creature with Gilder Bairn or move them with something like Simic Guildmage, will this double the number of counters on the target of the ability?
I know that changing a player's life total counts as gaining or losing life, but I wasn't sure if the same theory worked for counters.

I run two, delicious double double...
Also, if a Solarion has 5 +1/+1s and I tap it with on of these guys out, does it make him a 15/15 (put 5 on and then double the 5 to 10, so 10+5) or a 20/20 (take all 5 off, put 10 on, double, so 10x2)?
Alzhander

@ LouisianaxLimey: I'm pretty sure this won't add anything extra to Solarion, as its effect is just to double its counters, and doesn't place any counters on it. Then again, I could be wrong... It will double the counters from it sunburst though.

Well, Omenchild, I just think that this card is quite logically the greatest card for any counter/token deck. I think people just get a little excited because of how vast the possibilities are. Yes, it is an awesome card, but it expensive both in mana cost and in actual money.
The luckiest you could be is to get this card out 5th turn (or 2nd if you are using black lotus), and against many fast-build decks (like an eightpost or a burn deck) the deck that this is put in is pretty much screwed by then.
I give it a 4.5. and, yes, it is definitely going into my sap deck.

i think 2 would do x3 because lets say you use dragon fodder and they both would try to multiply the 2 instantaneoulsly. because of this, niether of them can go first and therefore cannot doulble the other effect. I think they oth simply add 2 to dragon foddermakng 6 tokens. this is just a guess and im probly not right but its my interpretation.

A couple of corrections: first, as to the case of having more than one in play at once, Wizards has already provided a ruling for this:
10/1/2005 If there are two Doubling Seasons on the battlefield, then the number of tokens or counters is four times the original number. If there are three on the battlefield, then the number of tokens or counters is eight times the original number.
The reason behind this, I believe, is that while the abilities TRY to happen simultaneously, they have to use the stack so one will go first. Once that happens, the second one will now be modifying a new number, and there's no reason it wouldn't update to double the new amount instead. Second, I believe the ruling with planeswalkers is that they'll come into play with twice the number of counters with a Season in play, but that their abilities that add counters are unaffected. This is because the addition of a counter is the COST of the ability, and Doubling Season only triggers if an EFFECT would place a counter on a permanent you control.

I simply love this card! The possibilities are infinite and you can pretty much do everything with the right cards, like dealing huge direct damage (Magma mine), gaining huge ammount of life and keeping it (Eternity Vessel), removing the whole board of the opponent (Recantation), multiplying really fast a creature of your choice (Soul Foundry) or simply winning the game through a win condition that uses counters (Darksteel Reactor, Chance Encounter and Helix Pinnacle). This is the perfect card for what I want as a main deck!

Out of 16 current walkers, only 4 can't go ultimate on the first turn with a single Doubling Season out (Ajani Vengeant, Nissa and both Jaces). For some this is especially game changing; Elspeth makes most of your permanents indestructible for 4 mana; Sarkhan Vol puts out 20 points of power for 4 mana; Chandra Nalaar does 10 damage to an opponent and each creature they control for 5 mana. I'm with the people who rage at seeing this card mentioned everywhere, so let's just haul out the list and be done with it.
I can't paste actual URLs in here without them getting messed up by the formatter, so here are a couple of simple searches you can run if you want to find just about every card this works well with: 1. Include "token". Exclude "nontoken". 2. Include "counter". Exclude "spell", "countered", and "suspend". (And possibly a few others based on your taste, like "cumulative upkeep" and such.)
These cards do not need to be cross-referenced back to this one. You get more tokens/counters, we get it. I would not call this sort of thing a combo because this effect is no more or less than exactly what this card does.
I'm willing to consider things to be combos if you can get an effect with this that you normally couldn't. For example, any creature + Splinter Twin + this = you get two copies and only have to exile one of them.

Do-able pull off...this plus Storm Herd. Hehehehe. Pyroclasm, damn it
I hate this card. Not because it's an awesome card; not because it's effect is lame or something i don't like; no. The only reason I hate this card is that every nub on this site posts Doubling season as part of a combo thinking that it somehow enhances the combo or is an original thought.
here's a hint. EVERY TOKEN OR COUNTER STYLE CARD CAN BENEFIT FROM THIS. Done. That's the only post we need about it. Besides, if you need doubling season to pull off your combo, you may as well say you need baneslayers or jace's to do it. It's pretty much the same idea. It's an awesome card, and combos are only awesome because it's an awesome card. There's no creativity in taking an awesome card and saying "hey this plus some mediocre card makes that card good!"
Further, by the time you cast this (turn 3-4) you may have wasted precious time. An excellent card no doubt, but people need to leave it on the shelf now and then and realize that despite being awesome it doesn't belong in every counter and token deck. if you need it to make a combo, the combo sucks. A deck needs only put these in it (assuming the proper token/counter reliance) to improve. It doesn't need sick combos because there's no point! It's already awesome! You can't polish polish, or at least, there's no point.
Let awesome be awesome and build combos out of combo cards.

I don't think this actually makes Infect any better, as A) Doubling Season does not affect counters being put onto players and B) I don't think damage being dealt actually counts as an effect. So Xenograft makes everything you control the creature type of your choice in addition to whatever else it is. Choose Golem. Precursor Golem copies any spell that targets a golem for each golem you control. Doubling Season doubles that number. With the Kicker we're talking ten token copies of every creature you control PLUS all of the golem tokens that the Precursor Golems and splicers bring in with them.

Oh yeah, and make the commander sets even more expensive. Sol Ring + Lightning Greaves in all of them was extremely generous as it was, and basically paid for the cost that Wizards originally set, but then you add in powerful creatures like Eternal Witness, Yavimaya Elder, Chaos Warp, and Flusterstorm. From that you get those stupid price spikes that Wizard's was trying to avoid because everyone who already plays EDH buys them as a basics toolbox.

There are so many combos with this card you can't even begin to think of which combos to write.
Kick the Rite targeting the Season. You put 10 Doubling Season tokens into play, each as a 5/5 creature. Now that you have 11 doubling seasons, any card that makes tokens or uses counters suddenly does 2048x what it used to do.
Say that you then cast another Rite, producing an additional 10240 Doubling Seasons. This means everything from then on is multiplied by 2^10251, which is around 7*10^3085, or a 7 followed by 3085 zeros. Then, say you play a Khalni Garden. I'm pretty sure this causes the universe to fill with plant tokens, which causes it to condense under its own mass. Congrats, you just started the next Big Bang!

MrBarrelRoll - "Say that you then cast another Rite, producing an additional 10240 Doubling Seasons. This means everything from then on is multiplied by 2^10251, which is around 7*10^3085, or a 7 followed by 3085 zeros."
Now just imagine that before doing this step, you played a Precursor Golem and a Xenograft (calling Golem). So the first Rite to resolve gives you 10,240 Doubling Seasons, then the next gives you 5* 2^10251 Doubling Seasons. The next makes 5 * 2^(5 * 2^10251 + 10,251). Then reiterate for the next 8 Rites.
I'm a MATH MINOR and I have no idea how many that would give you, but it's a lot bigger than the number of particles in the universe (estimated no higher than a googol, or 10^100). Hell, the SECOND COPY beats that number.

Combos with pretty much everything. If it involves a counter, a token or anything in between, this combos with it. You need 4 in your token decks, 4 in your ally decks, 4 in your graft deck, and if you have a deck that doesn't need 4 of these. With minimal tweaking, you'll need 4 of these in there as well.

The question is when will this be reprinted. Given it's one of the most fun cards in the game, useful in several formats, a kitchen table favorite and has been recently hyped in various articles on Wizards own site, I'm frankly amazed it hasn't been reprinted yet.
And yet maybe for secondary market reasons they are reluctant. It would have been a perfect fit into at least two of the recent Commander decks but it wasn't included.
Well... They did it. Innistrad has half a reprint of this:
Parallel Lives Enchantment R If an effect would put one or more tokens onto the battlefield under your control, it puts twice that many of those tokens onto the battlefield instead.

@marilymonroe ... are you serious? Reading old cards and taking there text literally is basically not following the rules at all... If you actually read the Oracle text you would find out that it happened to say this exactly. "Each other non-Aura enchantment is a creature with power and toughness each equal to its converted mana cost. It's still an enchantment." Basically says... Doubling Season wants you...
All the more reason to sideboard Evacuation. Sure your combo was impressive and we just spent the last 5 minutes checking your math, but the fun part was when I undid it all with one card, regardless of protection/indestructibility.

This card was ridiculous in Ravnica block when you had the Selesnya tokens, Bloodthirst counters and *shudder* Graft running around. The Golgari even got in on the fun with a few of there dredgers that threw +1/+1 counters. 5/5

As a general rule, you should only mention Doubling Season in the card comments if it interacts with Season at least twice, that is a quadruple effect. Good examples are Orochi Hatchery, Mikeus the Luminarch, Forgotten Ancient, Gutter Grime, and Saproling Burst, just off the top of my head.

This card is ridiculously potent- the CC is the only thing keeping it in check.
It augments itself so well I don't see them allowing us 4 of them forever. Then again, they unrestricted Berserk...
Whether it gets restricted or not, I'll be very surprised if they reprint this outside of a From the Vault or Premium/Duel Deck release, and the already-existing promo foil.

I found this to be very useful in my Ally deck (usually run G/W with some R tossed in for fun). Those Oran-Rief Survivialists & Hada Freeblades get pretty strong quickly when you play a Join the Ranks and suddenly put out 4 more allies!
I'd imagine with Innistrad producing a lot of tokens, this will see a lot more play too.

@JaxsonBateman: Actually, Sarkhan puts 40 power on the battlefield for 4 mana when you have a Doubling Season out ;) And he's even got the same color (partly anyway) as the Season and Fires of Yavimaya *hint hint*.
@JaxsonBateman: I believe Sarkhan Vol would put out 40 total points of power, given that Doubling Season would also double the amount of tokens created from his ultimate.
Here's to hoping and praying for a reprint in Return to Ravnica! Though, I'm a little worried because we have its younger brother named Parallel Lives from Innistrad.
I detest the notion that Doubling Season and cards like it such as Paradox Haze and Training Grounds "combo" with anything. On they're own they do literally nothing. The only purpose they serve is to make cards you're already playing better. You know, win-more.
Maybe in some cases that's not true with these cards, like using training grounds to lower activation costs to make an actual infinite combo. But if you're not doing that then Doulbing Season combos with tokens and counters as much as Giant Growth combos with an attacking creature.

@Xycolian A reprint of this would be absolutely horrendous. This works with planeswalkers, which would absolutely ruin the game. Basically every recent planeswalker would be able to ultimate the turn they came in, and many of them would even be able to ultimate and live.
Oh, and tokens - do you really think we need a Standard where Lingering Souls is making eight spirits on its own?
I'd love to see it reprinted in a Duel Deck, Premium Deck Series or even FTV (though I can't ever afford to buy those) but not in a Standard rotation.

Also, Continue, you're somewhat right, but Doubling Season is a may ability. As if this card COULDN'T get any better, aside from the lack of colour weight and TWO FRIGGIN' AMAZING ABILITIES, they're MAY abilities.
So if your Devoted Druid's going to goof up, you don't have to give it an extra -1/-1 counter.

That's a lot. Compare with another of the most combo-able (that's a word, right?) cards ever, Painter's Servant, which has only 241.

Sounds good!
So much for subpar combos.
Sarkhan Vol with this thing is nuts in casual multiplayer.
Enough said.
I mean there are so many things that it works well with.
Cradle of vitality
Any Planeswalker
Mycoloth
Any Devour
If you can manage to keep it on the field for a turn that is >.>
Quickest I've seen so far is Pentavus, with all the Naya cards that play cards without their mana cost, you could have Pentavus as a 20/20 creature by its second turn on the field easy.
Simply put, one of my favorite cards of all time- period.
(P.S.: Evolution Vat)
4.0
1) Tap gilded lotus for 3 mana
2) Sacrifice any artifact creature besides dross golem.
a) Gilded lotus untaps so you may tap it again
b) Spawning pit gets 2 counters on it
3) tap gilded lotus for mana again
4) Remove 2 counters on spawning pit to put 2 creatures into play.
I could be wrong of course, but it just seems to me that they'd each apply their effect separately (linear) and not build on the previous effect (exponential). Does anybody know exactly what would happen here? And if you do know, how do you know? Has anybody tried this combo on MTGO for example?
There's nothing like a 14/14 prevent-all-damage lifelinking trampler for 7 mana!
I know that changing a player's life total counts as gaining or losing life, but I wasn't sure if the same theory worked for counters.
Also, if a Solarion has 5 +1/+1s and I tap it with on of these guys out, does it make him a 15/15 (put 5 on and then double the 5 to 10, so 10+5) or a 20/20 (take all 5 off, put 10 on, double, so 10x2)?
I'm pretty sure this won't add anything extra to Solarion, as its effect is just to double its counters, and doesn't place any counters on it. Then again, I could be wrong... It will double the counters from it sunburst though.
This card would be awesome in a Modular deck, even more so if you can get 2+ on the field :D
Mix with whatever token generators you wish throw in a few Soul's Grace to rub salt in the wound if you like and have fun!
The luckiest you could be is to get this card out 5th turn (or 2nd if you are using black lotus), and against many fast-build decks (like an eightpost or a burn deck) the deck that this is put in is pretty much screwed by then.
I give it a 4.5. and, yes, it is definitely going into my sap deck.
and I must thank ravnica for giving cards like this and followed footsteps to make timmies like me feel like johnies and almost turn me into one. It is awesome and plays on both fun and creativity and just leads to some great times. I have to say that this card started me on the path towards johnydom and made me start looking for non obvious combos and try to figure out interesting new things with every new set (though I haven't been as successful as I might like)
5/5, 10/10 actually. Great card!
Possibly the most fun card ever printed (gilder bairn dies too easily). Its a shame it took R&D this long to come out with something this fun.
*** it. If it says counter (the noun) or token, it comboes with it.
This is because the addition of a counter is the COST of the ability, and Doubling Season only triggers if an EFFECT would place a counter on a permanent you control.
i don't have vol but i do enjoy the extra 7 for sarkhan the mad, (which i do have). pop out a couple dragons w/ his -2, downgrade my opponents eldrazi everyone enjoys using so much... karrthus. -4.
i have alot of scour cards so im able to do this almost every game havn't lost w/ tht deck yet. (jund w/ a little grixis to fit bolas in, also very fun immediate ultimate ; )
Green has so much mana ramp that you can easily get this out before turn 5.
Definitely want this one for my token/sacrifice deck.
A list of useful counters types that are used for multiple effects: Quest, Charge, Versel and Divinity. Planeswalkers with their Loyalty counters are also great. Graft, Modular, Level up, Vanish and Devour are also great keyword abilities with Doubling Season.
NOT
I play a Jace the mind sculptor own u with him and exile your whole graveyard and deck.
Planeswalker's make this too powerful!!!
UPDATE: This card makes cards with the infect ability deadlier.
I can't paste actual URLs in here without them getting messed up by the formatter, so here are a couple of simple searches you can run if you want to find just about every card this works well with:
For example, any creature + Splinter Twin + this = you get two copies and only have to exile one of them.
here's a hint.
I wonder if one can search just how many numskulls on gatherer referenced this card...

In short, I find the card too linear.
One of the many, many reasons why Ravnica was the best block ever.
Now all you need is Aceticism to keep Unsummon from becomming Wrath of God.
Oh yeah, throw in Coat of Arms for extra fun.
Any blue permanent =Followed Footsteps
5/5
Oh yeah, and make the commander sets even more expensive. Sol Ring + Lightning Greaves in all of them was extremely generous as it was, and basically paid for the cost that Wizards originally set, but then you add in powerful creatures like Eternal Witness, Yavimaya Elder, Chaos Warp, and Flusterstorm. From that you get those stupid price spikes that Wizard's was trying to avoid because everyone who already plays EDH buys them as a basics toolbox.
That being said, it seems everyone overlooks the wonderful art, and overall flavour of this card.
When my bugs hit the table, their pheremones kick into overdrive.
Everything.
This card needs to be reprinted just so we can comment on it some more. xD
Precursor Golem + Rite of Replication? bah. Propaganda all your 12ty trillion tokens away, and then cast and activate Nin, the Pain Artist. Das Boots will give Nin haste :)
Sorry. But this doesn't work. Opalescence says "Each other Worldly Enchantment", and I think that means things like Bad Moon or Goblin King where it hits the ENTIRE field. Doubling Season only works for the controlling player.
And yet maybe for secondary market reasons they are reluctant. It would have been a perfect fit into at least two of the recent Commander decks but it wasn't included.
Better reprint in M12.
Edit: Better reprint in M13.
Parallel Lives
Enchantment R
If an effect would put one or more tokens onto the battlefield under your control, it puts twice that many of those tokens onto the battlefield instead.
... are you serious? Reading old cards and taking there text literally is basically not following the rules at all...
If you actually read the Oracle text you would find out that it happened to say this exactly. "Each other non-Aura enchantment is a creature with power and toughness each equal to its converted mana cost. It's still an enchantment."
Basically says... Doubling Season wants you...
@WhiteWizard42
For the ultimate rigged combo, check out the comments page at Doubling Cube.
Holy mother of Arceus! i think you accidentally the whole game!
It augments itself so well I don't see them allowing us 4 of them forever.
Then again, they unrestricted Berserk...
Whether it gets restricted or not,
I'll be very surprised if they reprint this outside of a From the Vault or Premium/Duel Deck release,
and the already-existing promo foil.
Tolsimir Wolfblood
Dark Depths
Kaldra
pretty much anything that makes legendary tokens, actually.
Unless you have mirror gallery
doubling season ): i want you so bad.
but you're too expensive. wife is in slightly used condition.
I'd imagine with Innistrad producing a lot of tokens, this will see a lot more play too.
though it starts slow, if you leave them unchecked, it will double in threat every turn, until you are dead.
This should go into almost every green deck.
And he's even got the same color (partly anyway) as the Season and Fires of Yavimaya *hint hint*.
I believe Sarkhan Vol would put out 40 total points of power, given that Doubling Season would also double the amount of tokens created from his ultimate.
Maybe in some cases that's not true with these cards, like using training grounds to lower activation costs to make an actual infinite combo. But if you're not doing that then Doulbing Season combos with tokens and counters as much as Giant Growth combos with an attacking creature.
We get that it "combos" with _______________. I automatically rate any obscene doubling season references .5/5 stars.
Oh, and tokens - do you really think we need a Standard where Lingering Souls is making eight spirits on its own?
I'd love to see it reprinted in a Duel Deck, Premium Deck Series or even FTV (though I can't ever afford to buy those) but not in a Standard rotation.
How about a +8, eh?
(that's what happens, right?)
As a side note, there are indeed cards that don't combo with this. Devoted Druid comes to mind.
@Ferlord: I don't see "may" anywhere on here. All I see is "instead". Looks mandatory to me.
That's a lot. Compare with another of the most combo-able (that's a word, right?) cards ever, Painter's Servant, which has only 241.
Predator Ooze
Scavenging Ooze
Mycoloth
Avenger of Zendikar
Giant Adephage
Ring of Kalonia
Of course anything that produces mana would work as well.
They're defenceless against your R/G infect deck! :D
the number is 5.52229580797^16 in simplist form, and i agree, it is a almost incalculable number,
Corollary: The number of Doubling Seasons autocarded is inversely proportional to the irritation among viewers
Edit: Rise of the Eldrazi introduces the Leval Up mechanic. Add in Zendikar block's other counter-utilisers and token-makers, and RotE would be the perfect place to reprint this card.
Edit: Ok, the Season isn't in RotE. How about putting it into 2011?
Edit: Ok, so the Season isn't in 2011. What about something like a Planechase/Archenemy deck? Reprint this somewhere!
Edit: Finally! MaRo himself has confirmed this will be reprinted in Modern Masters.
This really needs a reprint, though not in a standard-legal set. Put it in a Commander/Planechase precon or something...
*edit* MODERN MASTERS REPRINT!!! :D
"Whenever you do something, do it again!"
You'd get 10240 which would give you 10251 in all ultimately giving you 136957046165759112846419910638694133425420977365386179580714741372748756744105182162694093073

Look at what you did, your kolbold tokens outnumber all observeable particles in the universe. I'm pretty sure the universe crashes at this point.
