The other half of Doubling Season, hot on the heels of Parallel Lives... And it's a terrifying giant fungus. Perfect. The fact that it's a 4/4 for 4 doesn't hurt either. Gives you maximum bang for your buck if you're Scavenging, Grafting, Modular-ing, and using +1/+1 counters in general.

It's not the other half of Doubling Season because it doesn't double other types of counters. Scavenge really likes this though, and it's good colors for undying as well. Also seems like wicked fun in Ghave EDH!

At first I only thought of using Scavenge with this guy, but then at the Prerelease I had him with a Lotleth Troll and I realized how powerful this card really is. Interacts with a lot more then you might think. I fought someone who was using this guy with Unleash to get 3/3 Rakdos Cacklers for one.

Great card, I'd have been fine with it been a 3/3. Also, Mycoloth says hello.
Speaking of mushrooms, I know he's part of Golgari, but how is this card in any way black besides the creature type? He's aggressively costed like a green creature and has a green ability. Nothing mechanically screams black to me, but they probably didn't have room.
This would, of course, require an absolutely insane draw, and would almost surely never happen; but it is theoretically possible.

Staple that onto half of a Doubling Season, and you have a stupidly powerful card. It doesn't have to be used in the "right deck," it can be thrown into ANY deck that uses +1/+1 counters.
With a single Corpsejack out, Forgotten Ancient becomes:
Whenever a player casts a spell, you may put two +1/+1 counters on Forgotten Ancient.
At the beginning of your upkeep, you may move any number of +1/+1 counters from Forgotten Ancient onto other creatures. For each +1/+1 counter moved onto a creature this way, put two +1/+1 counters on that creature instead.
It just gets even more ridiculous with more Corpsejacks out.

Actually commenting on the card, I think he's great. P/T equal to CMC is always great. The fact that he's half a Doubling Season without sacrificing P/T efficiency is very, very good. Not to mention the abundace of cards even in standard that work with him, the Unleash mechanic, the Undying mechanic, the Scavenge mechanic, both Mikaeus's, Hamletback Goliath, Bond Beetle, Hunger of the Howlpack, Blessings of Nature etc etc.
Not to mention whatever Simic is gonna roll out as their mechanic
It won all the games I got it out in pre-release, and there's much silliness to be had with +1/+1 counters. Increasing Savagery perhaps? Most of the time it will be killed the moment it hits the table I imagine. Still, excellent stuff if you get a chance to play with scavenge.

Multiple Corpsejack Menaces, Gilder Bairn, and anything with Scavenge. (Such as Terrus Wurm) Potentially dropping thousands of counters on a creature. Made better when that creature you drop all those counters on is Wild Beastmaster.
Of course that really only works under ideal conditions, but the idea of having that many counters on something is just amusing.
Anything with Undying, Unleash or Scavange will benefit from his ability as well.
It seems to be especially broken witth Primodrial Hydra since it triples its power each turns instead of doubling it. It is also quite nasty with Champion of Lambholt since, as it enters, it places 2 +1/+1 counters on the champion and keep doubling the number of counters placed for the doubling turns.
There are a few creatures with Morbid that have +1/+1 counters ability as well. Ulvenwald Bear (Morbid: put 2 +1/+1 on any creature, now put 4!), Festerhide Boar (Morbid : would enter as a 7/7 for 4), Somberwald Spider (Morbid : would enter as a 6/8 reach for 5) and Gravetiller Wurm (Morbid : would enter as a 12/12 trample for 6).
Haven't seen a mention of using Primordial Hydra with him either...Have played with it to great effect here along with regular undying (Young Wolf and Strangleroot Geist.) And lets not forget Champion of Lambholt. Loads of great uses with Corpsejack.

hey i have a question.. in this deck i just built (golgari) i have two creatures corpsejack menace, it's ability is "If one or more+1/+1 counters would be placed on a creature you control, twice that many +1/+1 counters are placed on it instead." okay so lets say i have both on the field and a creature gets, say +2/+2 would those two separate creature abilities pile on each other? like it would be 2/2 to 4/4 to 8/8 so on and so fourth. i tried looking it up but i can't find it. so jw thanks

I freakin love this card. 4 for a 4/4 is just fine. He's beefy enough to hold some ground and cheap enough to get on the field. I've made insane things happen with these on the battlefield. One game I got out lotleth troll, death's presence and like, 2 or 3 of these. It got rediculous fast. Sure, that won't happen again anytime soon, but with all the +1+1 counters flying around lately, the possibilities are endless and obvious.

@Jacobdelan Sorry for digging back a few comments but yes, Corpsejack menaces DO stack.
They double each time, so if something gets a +1/+1, The first one would double it making it +2/+2 The second one would also double it making it a +4/+4 As would the third for a +8/+8 And if you had a fourth that +1/+1 would turn into a +16/+16.
And that's just a +1/+1 imagine a Terrus wurm scavenge of x5 +1/+1! (+5/+5) that'd be +80/+80!!!
And if all those were going onto a Wild Beastmaster... EVERYTHING WOULD GET +80/+80!!!!!!
Although following this, leads me to my question: When the Corpsejack Menace doubles +1/+1 counters, would a +3/+3 from say, Giant Growth... Would that become a +6/+6? Because it's adding a +3/+3 not x3 +1/+1 isn't it...

@Ultamate Yep, you'll still get the counters as the protection only stops red and black sources which specifically target a creature. A good way to remember protection is with DEBT. It can't be Damaged, Equipped/Enchanted, Blocked or Targeted by anything it has protection from.

Neither of those spells say counters. Corpsejack Menace only affects counters, not temporary buffs like Giant Growth or Furious Resistance.
I like this guy in a BUG deck with early evolvers, as he adds two counters to anything he would evolve when he enters the battlefield.
Golgari seems to have been made to marry Simic - mix the two guilds together and you get the mother of all counter decks.
edit: can't believe I didn't realize this before; this card makes graft, which is a pretty good ability in the right deck, awesomely broken since every time you graft onto something, this doubles the counters.
In essence, this two for ones everything you graft onto.

They couldnt reprint Doubling Season without it being absolutely ridiculous, so they gave us half of it on a 4/4 for four cmc. Im completely fine with this tbh. Probably goes the best with the guild mechanic out of all the guild leaders in Return To Ravnica, and maybe even Gatecrash, combos well with evolve, lotleth troll is his best friend and he is currently in a long term relationship with master biomancer. Many shenanigans have ensued when i scavenged 20 1/1 counters onto nighthawk just by having two of him on the field. Succeptible to removal and is rather weak without setup, however the payoff is well worth it if you can pull it off.

I think the reason Scavenge mechanics tend to be a little overcosted is because they are made anticipating this guy to be in play at the same time. Paying six mana for ten +1/+1 counters is pretty good (as per Deadbridge Goliath). It also pushes people towards copies of Varolz, the Scar-Striped, which would make that 4 mana for ten +1/+1s.
I am definitely running this is a Simic/Golgari deck while in Standard, the goal is to keep Corpsejack Menace alive (a little countermagic?) and get good deals out of Scavenge. Nifty little plays, like draw two cards for 0 by scavenging a Slitherhead onto a Fathom Mage with Corpsejack Menace in play.
Turn 4 this followed by a Vastwood Hydra on turn 5. The hydra gets double the counters when it enters the battlefield. Oh no it died? No worries, now you get to double the counters on the hydra AGAIN to redistribute them among any amount of creatures you like.
This is a ridiculous card and I love it. Coupled with Mistcutter Hydra, Wild Beastmaster and a few scavenge cards thrown in for good measure, it just gets insane. Does this stack with Kalonian Hydra's doubling the number of +1/+1 counters ability? Since it doesn't specifically say that you're 'adding' the counters.
