You're already paying 7 mana to play this card so i think the second ability costs too much for it to be relevant. That said 7 mana for a 10/10 is an awesome deal. Also amazing artwork

this card is sooo bad. if you're not playing mana burn and you have like 10 mana (excluding the required mountain and forest) in your pool and you have doubling cube in your field... ohhh... 20 mana at your disposal to summon apocalypse hydra. like this, it'll have 40 +1/+1 counters on it. WHOA! this is too bad.

7 mana for a 10/10, in the two best colours for mana acceleration, seems good enough to me. I don't think it's spectacular, but worth playing in a fair number of decks and especially in limited.
The second ability is more bonus gravy than a key part of the card. It's not essential, but it's certainly nice.

Iammagic, you need shut up. This card is brilliant. While second ability is cool, let me this break down so even YOU can understand it. 7 CMC, and he's a 10/10. Repeat, 10/10 with a direct damage ability, for 7. This guy rocks your freakin' socks, so thank the sweet lord above you haven't faced him yet.

Ok... let me get this straight, with a mana boosting deck I can call out a 10/10 for 7, and then give it -3/-3 the next turn to deal 3 damage to a creature or player for 6 mana...
While the burn effect is a little costly, I don't think many players are going to care...
Unblocked (god help you if it somehow becomes unblockable or gains trample.) at 7 mana i hit you with 10 and burn you for 3 on the same turn...next turn (if it lives three turns your opponent is stupid or has nothing in ways of creature removal.) I hit you for 7 and burn you 3 more...
wow... just... wow... he is a huge hitter... but a word of advice, don't count on him TOO much to win you the game, there will be those jerks with O-ring, terror, celestial purge, etc that will kill him and if you dumped all your mana into him they are going to laugh at you...
Give it haste and watch the fun, or play one of those cards that go off a creature's power... "I hit you with a 10/10 and then I play soul's Majesty and draw 10 cards" or better yet, soul's might to make a 20/20, that's always fun...

yes I will summon my 10/10 Apocalypse Hydra, I will tap this creature it gains haste, I tap this other creature, it is unblockable, and finally, pay 3, it is now a 12/12 lifelink, trampler

This card is near perfection. Now while the cost to some people may seem absurd, in reality green decks have tons of mana accleration; which means this guy could easily be a 12/12 by turn four. His second ability is good, but mabye a little too expensive at 2 mana. The art work couldn't be better; seeing the soldiers of Bant get destroyed by one of Naya's most vicious creatures is awesome. But aside from all the good points about the Hydra, I must go on to explain the bad, which keep the card from being entirely perfect. First there is little protection from removal. Its obvious that burn spells won't even sting this guy, but everything from Terminate to Path to Exile will easily make all that mana investment vain. Seconly, the X cost prevents the Hydra from being played with cascade or reanimation combos effectively. Aside from the downsides however, Apocalypse Hydra is still an amazing monstrosity that will make your opponents quiver in fear at the site of it.

I've been killed by this card several times. Has anyone done this?: Play Doubling Cube. Play Doubling Season. Play this card and pay whatever you can for X. Doubling Season doubles the number of tokens, as does this card's effect. Doubling cube increases how much you can pump into X.
Only problem? Why the ping effect (that other one where you can remove the counters to do damage?) Not only is it not necessary, but doesn't make sense from a Vorthos standpoint (What does that damage represent? Chucking the heads at your opponent?)

Instead of a ping ability, why not reach? (Makes sense due to the size, right?) Or maybe an on print trample? I'm not knocking the ping, it's good albeit a bit expensive, but really? Oh and Mana Reflections + Minion Reflector + Mighty Emergence + Ooze Garden with Apoc. Hydra IS GREAT. JUST HAVE TO FIND AWAY TO MAKE IT MORE EFFECTIVE.

I think the pinging ability should have been replaced by either Reach or Trample (like said before) or the ability to block any number of creatures (although it's not really seen as being a creature you'd rather block with, so that might not be very useful). Trample or Reach would've been the best replacement I think.
And this card is pretty sweet overall, except for the fact that it is quite vulnerable to removal (a Whispersilk Cloak would make it an absolute beast). I'll give it a 4/5. Also, I just used it in a game and made it a 12/12, but my opponent used Act of Treason on it, and attacked me with all he had and killed me :(

Great synergy with this card and its ping ability, works like this: Mayael's aria on the field, play hydra for 7, hydra gives you 10 life a turn, and adds counters to itself with the aria, equip gorgon flail to hydra, you get a free creature destruction once a turn and then just go straight for their life points. Also awesome, have soul's fire cards, only 2 of them would kill your opponent and end the game if they don't get countered. Oh, and the ping ability means it breathes fire or lightning to those who asked.
"Not only is it not necessary, but doesn't make sense from a Vorthos standpoint (What does that damage represent? Chucking the heads at your opponent?)"
In mythology, the Hydra lived in a poisonous swamp and had a lethal poison for blood. I suppose you could say that this is covered by the pinging rule, but to be honest I think it's just a throwback to the old days and the other Hydra cards that had the same mechanic. :) All I know for sure is that the art is gorgeous, it's size is impressive and it's rules are simple yet effective. A great card for all types of players!

About the whole pinging thing, my theory (and it's just a theory) is that the power of the creature as a whole is represented by the mana cost, and the pinging is actually each separate head dealing damage individually. The creature as a whole is much more powerful, but each head can take out a single defender at a time. What do you guys think?

I got this card pretty early in this set, and there are many points that I can still agree with. First, the artwork is second to none, the only one to come close was Progenitus with the mist covered hydra. Second, the ability to play a giant creature, say 14/14 for about 9 is just EPIC, used to run it in a deck of mine, but only had 1 so it didn't prove as useful as I had hoped. Third, the ping ability is a bit costly yes, but with a few other things to use with it, like Gorgon Flail, Quietous Spike, or even Basilisk Collar it is just evil. Something I thought about implementing in a naya domain deck of mine is ping Child of Alara to death, while keeping him above 5, and paying 1 with Spearbreaker Behemoth (if you have it to spare) it sticks around to play and hit an unguarded opponent next turn, even if it is only for 6 less than when it came out. Overall I give it a 4.8/5

Ah, July of 2009. I remember it like it was two-and-a-half years ago.
This card is pretty darn Epic. I, for one, love the (non)interaction between CMC X and reanimation. You can make this plenty stupid with elves, and you don't need to zombify it to make it good. It's the scalablity of X, and the 'clearance sale' boost you get from paying 5 or more, that pushes this into the classification of cards that provide you yet another alternative way of making Big Stupid Giant Monsters Fast. I like Reanimating Akroma as much as the next guy- but I'd like it a lot less if that were the Only way to 'cheat' at mana curves. MTG is still cool because there's so much diversity in the card interactions and the kinds of decks you can build, and Reanimate and Elves can both coexist as valid deck plans for making Ginormuge Fatties waaayyy too early.
There's just one little quibble I have with this guy, and tbh it may have been unavoidable- I wish he'd been in either Shards of Alara, or Alara Reborn, but not Conflux. Or I wish that The Other Mythic Rare Mana Sucking Dork Hydra (Progenitus) had been in another set of the Block. I love both cards, but I think it detracts a bit from both of them for them to be in the same set.
Conflux disappointed me in this way more than once. I consider it high crimes and descrimination against Evil Being Awesome to put Celestial Purge in the exact same set as Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker. I understand that the existence of Nicol Bolas necessitates a card like, say, Oblivion Ring. I do not understand that it means we need Celestial Purge. And Oblivion Ring can be in some other set. Super Cards like Bolas shouldn't be in the EXACT same set as the PERFECT high-efficiency answer spell. Print the answer spell later or earlier so it's THERE, but don't make Bolas have to sit in the same room with it on PreRelease day. :(
