First of all, this is 4 cmc for a 5/5 with no negative ability
Then, it fits with golgari so you may be able to get it back once it dies or scavenge for 6 to put 5 +1/+1 counters on another creature
I can't see how one could not love this card

Will be a draft bomb. Standard potential might be iffy though.

5/5 for 4 with a useful ability after it dies. Yeah, this will be a very high pick in draft.

Could be summoned early and provide killer bonus late game, it's great.

As a pro, I really like the scavenge ability and this guy is very good at scavenging, among other things.

It's Juzám Beetle!

Very efficient cost, lacking only trample or some other form of evasion (but hey, you're playing Green). And the Scavenge cost is one of the more reasonable ones. And it's a giant rhinoceros beetle with mushrooms growing on it. It's beautiful.

This is just a cool card. It's a giant beetle!

The scavenge is potentially game-ending if you load it on to your Rancor target for an alpha strike. Why were they on low health to begin with? Why, because you hit them with this thing Rancor'd up first!

I love how in any other color this would be broken, but it's normal in green. :)

I fvucking LOVE golgari insects. They have the coolest art I've ever seen on a magic card.

So... it's a 5/5 for 4 with no drawback AND an ability - sounds great to me!

Creatures have really improved over the years?!

I understand that the set hasn't been released yet, but still, why isn't this at LEAST 4?
4 cmc 5/5, that's ABOVE the curve.
This creature's also useful while dead, and 6 mana to put 5 +1/+1 counters on a creature is a pretty good deal, I might add.

I'm not gonna do demographics or anything around here, but the first ratings on this card are probably from haters, spoiled people or elitist spikes.
This is a GOOD card and deserves more than this current score (3.756 at 10/04/12, the day before official release)

5/5 from me

Scavenge is really poor in my opinion. You could sit there and spend six mana, in this case, just to have your opponent kill or bounce the recipient of the +X/+X and all that mana would be wasted.

This will do fine in Standard but won't see much play in other formats.

I assure you that this will get out of hand.

Mark my words now as I buy 8 of these at $.75/

With just LoLtroll you turn him into a free +1/+1 on the troll and now he is a 4GG: Place 5 +1/+1 counters on target creature.
Ohyeah and he's a 5/5 if you need him.

As I said, this card is going to get out of hand.

just... I can't even describe how good it is...
5/5 for 4 mana, with no drawbacks? very playable card by itself.
Add to it the scavenge, that is quite cheap, and you get a monster!

For those that like to talkdown about the the scavenge target can be bounced, exiled, etc.. 2 words, hexproof creatures, like thrun for instance... what do you have to say about that?

I don't get why this is rated so low, its better than Blastoderm and Imperiosaur, yet both of them have higher ratings.

I want to know when the power creep on creatures is going to stop. Ten years from now, is 5/5 for 3 going to be the new norm? I remember when creatures used to be part of the collector's market. Now I just feel sorry for people who paid money for cards like Juzam Djinn or any of the older creature cards that used to actually be good back when Wizards had standards.

For all you guys who keep dreaming about this guy having trample, STOP BEING SPOILED BRATS! This card is already near broken status as is, and does not need any other abilities stacked onto it.

Ha! look at that! 5 horns!

Also 5 visible legs!

And the flavour text is divided into 2 segments of 5 words!

Add 5 power and 5 toughness, that's 5 instances of 5!

BOOYA!

I searched for 5/5's that cost 4. This and Spellbreaker Behemoth are the ONLY ones that have NO drawback and don't require you to Champion something. This not only fits those parameters, it also has crazy mid-late game value with Scavenge.

I don't get why this is only rated around 4 right now and hardly played in Standard at all. You'd play a 2/2 for one (Diregraf Ghoul), a 3/3 for two (Call of the Conclave) and a 4/4 for three (Loxodon Smiter), so why not a 5/5 for four?

When you don't curve out after a mull to 4, putting this on the battlefield on turn 3 is just gravy. Doesn't die to red removal & sweepers in standard. Doesn't die to abrupt decay. I think this body is very well positioned as a 4 drop in the current meta imo. It's not huntmaster of the fells or obstinate baloth. I think this is a sufficient follow up after a turn 2 loxodon smiter. This card also helps to prevent flooding, just put it on an arbor elf and make a 6/6 mana dork! I know it's vulnerable to unsummon we're talking about when your hand is forest, forest, swamp, you'll spend whatever to avoid flooding.

4.25/5 because, it's good early, mid, and late game. It's good on and off the curve. I just don't think it's as outstanding as the other 4 drops in the format though. :\

And on a less serious note, I think it's kinda cute :3 I mean just look at it. This bug is just heavily misunderstood. He doesn't even have black in his cmc and scavenge cost!! He just wants to be friends. I mean look at it, it's so lovable :3!

5/5 for 4 ALL DAY. This card is straight value.

When I cracked open my first Magic cards (Golgari event deck), I spent more time obsessing about getting more of these than I did Thragtusk. I don't know if I could ever build a green deck without at least considering this beastly beetle.

The art is also solid.

Man is this card ever fun to play.

From a guild flavor perspective, Scavenge is everything Dredge wasn't. Really, Scavenge is the only thing that gives Dredge a powerful Golgari feel; Dredging into Salvage fodder makes flavor sense in a way that Dredging for Narcomoebas and Flame-Kin Zealot doesn't. It's like a flavor ret-con.

Next I'm going to put him in a Simic deck and pretend he's a Fungus Insect Mutant. :)

Is a 5/5 for 2GreenGreen not good enough for you? You need him to have trample? You want him to be hexproof? You wish his scavenge cost less than 4GreenGreen? Screw you. This card is great as is.

There is just no pleasing some people, I swear...

4/5 Efficient beater with a nice curving ability onto your 5 drop if he eats removal.

Really good card here. Fits a curve very nicely. Turn 4 drop him, turn 5 drop a big trample creature and turn 6 you can scavenge for a really big trample creature. I wish people (in this case deep_shadow) would shut up aboutJuzam Djinn and powercreep. If WOTC stuck to the same powercurve in every set it would be extremely boring, and new sets would be just like the old ones, so even if you still wanted to play the game, there would be NO reason to buy new sets whatsoever because x card would be just like y card which, itself is a copy of z card.
On top of that, Green has historically held the cheap, efficient big creatures- (Tarmogoyf,Thragtusk,Force of Nature and so on). If this were a 5/5 for 2BlackBlack your argument might have some validity to it.

And I invite you, if you think there is a problem with power creep in this game, give Yugioh a try, it's MUCH worse.

My guess on the below-4 rating is because - mainly in Standard Constructed, this doesn't necessarily do a lot for the 'game state' or 'board position' upon being cast or upon resolving. Now, I'm not one to knock a 5/5 for 4 (clearly efficient), and it's got a Flashback of sorts for a dose of eventual card advantage; but the fact of the matter is that, even considering the Scavenge, this card won't do an incredible amount to alter the position of the game in competitive Constructed.

Contrast this card with the similarly-costed Day of Judgment or Sleep, in terms of game-state change.

I guess it is true that back in the day creatures were underpowered compared to other spells. 4/4 flyers for 5 honestly weren't very impactful. But they're going way too far with the powering up. Obsoleting Juzam Djinn wasn't the answer.

Deadbridge is one of the most efficient green creatures in standard right now, staged right between the meta warping with Thragtusk and the Naya aggro staple Flinthoof Boar. Though Jund can do better four two colorless and a double color (eg. Desecration Demon), Deadbridge gives Naya aggro decks an incredibly efficient beatdown tool that works very well with Ghor-Clan Rampager and Legion Loyalist. I'm very much a fan.

Oh come on!!!

Overheard at the WotC card lab: "Oh, I know, let's just make it rare! Then it won't disrupt the balance of the game too much..."

This, along with other cards like Baneslayer Anger, is the reason old fogeys like me look at modern magic with consternation. Cards like this are straight disrespectful!

@wideyes let me sum up what you just said:

"Wah, wahhhh! Wizards actually listened to people other than me on what they want from their cards! I don't like it! Wah, wahhh!"

Honestly I hate it when people complain about how the game has changed. So what? A new group of people play it. Like it or get out.

I love this guy so much.

Pure and efficient power, but at such a subtle cost. Without Trample or Haste to sneak damage through, this guy is a prime victim for chump blockers to hold back. And that's totally okay!

In an older set, this might've been balanced out by giving him a Cumulative Upkeep or something else that's totally inhibiting to the sort of ramping deck that would love this card. That's no fun, and I'm so glad that WotC found a creative way to get around it.

Can I just say that Scavenge is one of my favourite mechanics so far? It's a unique and imaginative way to get extra value out of your creatures so that they no longer "die to removal". It's brilliant and I wish there had been more creatures who could use Scavenge effectively. Good stuff.

@wideyes Don't be such a drama queen; the power level of this card, especially considering the fact that its deep in GREEN (which is the color most representative of having efficient P/T), is nowhere near the level of Baneslayer.

A shout out to everyone who downs this 5\5 for 2GG, I run a set in my R\G aggro and being able to ramp, drop this turn 3 and by turn 4 you could possibly be looking at a 10/10 double striking trampler. Nothing not to love about this cheap fatty. The combos are infinite!! And I've put the beat down on many a hell rider with this.

I really like Scavenge because it's a big "Screw You" to removal.
Sure, I'm getting a 5/5 for 4, and you want to get rid of it. Go ahead. It'll still be of use to me.
