Just screams out for Opalescence! Once Ope is in play, this is effectively a 5/5 for 2, and it can target itself since it is now a creature to keep itself alive.
For such an inventive old card it sure works in a sensible way. I always expect to see far worse templating and -1/+3 counters on cards like this.

Could work well in a {G} deck alongside infect creatures, if you're considering an aggressive build like this, I would also recommend Quest for the Gemblades
Reminds me of Vigean Hydropon. The Hydropon was doubtlessly inspired by this card, I imagine.

So if you DO have Opalescence out and then you get Doubling Season out, you can actually target Afiya Grovewith its own ability (as it specifies 'target creature' without 'another target creature'), adding an extra counter every turn.
