Just screams out for Opalescence! Once Ope is in play, this is effectively a 5/5 for 2, and it can target itself since it is now a creature to keep itself alive.

Ghave, Guru of Spores, Contagion Engine make for a great EDH deck with this. Always able to put counters on your critters.

So if you DO have Opalescence out and then you get Doubling Season out, you can actually target Afiya Grove with its own ability (as it specifies 'target creature' without 'another target creature'), adding an extra counter every turn.
