If you ask me, this card is a teensy bit broken.
static-xhead
★☆☆☆☆ (1.4/5.0) (4 votes)
by broken you mean its too much, over the top.Does it mean any other creatures all your creatures in play? Say you have 5 other creatures in play along with vigor and your opp casts hurricane for 5 damage, all your creatures without flying get 5 +1/+1 counters on them ? If that's true that's hella powerful and ya a bit broken but there are far worst cards.
stygimoloch
★★☆☆☆ (2.8/5.0) (4 votes)
@static-xhead, yes, that is indeed how it works, except for the fact that Hurricane affects non-flying creatures only. Earthquake would be a better choice for your example. Vigor is powerful yes, but 'broken' is a bit excessive.

jjanderson, yes it does, and if you have 3, well after your opponent slams his head through a wall, the effects stack, Chandra gonna try and burn me, well thanks now my 3 vigors are 26/26 and anyone else on the field is +30/+30

combine with purity for massive invulnerability

This card is incredible... so much you can do with it, and tho only way to permanately get rid of it is to exile it... Honestly though, how can you say it's not broken? The only other card that comes close (in this ele. cycly) is guile (at least for being amusing). Run 4 of these guys and a bunch of counterspells... lol.

For all the posters saying hey you could get a 30 power saproling.. look at that card again. Unless you have multiple vigors in play, it doesn't prevent damage to itself. That means if your opponent simply burns your vigor off the field, it doesn't do anything. Its only functional with other cards in play. Your opponent can still attack/block/destroy vigor, or use destroy on your other creatures, because destroy effects are not damage. That leaves a big gaping hole in the defense strategy with this card. On the other hand, vigor is still a great token protector, and a large bodied trampler. Finding a way to give it any type of shroud, or play a clone or followed footsteps to get multiples of it might end the game though it would take time. In some ways its better to get a creature thats going to end the game for you vs. hopefully buffing up a few of your other creatures, its about risk vs. reward, and have to remember that when trying to play vigor. Personally, I like meglonoth as my 6 mana slot for a trampler, its huge, and has vigilance, and a blocking effect.

Personally, i like the idea of the indestructible spearbreaker behemoth with vigor to make vigor indestructible.
Then with an indestructible vigor to protect a turntimber basilisk, you could kill probably 1-3 enemy creatures per turn via his landfall deathtouching on multiple creatures.

It's cards like this which remind players just why targetted spot removal is so damn important these days. Case in point - a standard vamps deck V an extended mono-green elf/power creep deck. The only pre-sideboard card which has any chance of dealing with something like Vigor is Tendrils (unless you're running Doom Blade/Hideous End/Feast of Blood for some reason). Beyond that, you've got to hope that your removal can keep up with the smaller creatures so your Gatekeepers can take care of the bigger ones. Not easy with cheap elves coming out every turn. ^^

So for anyone that ever questions why spot removal is so necessary - this is why. Creatures which simply *can't* be left alive.

@Kryptnyt - No. A third Vigor provides extra protection, but ultimately, the damage can only be prevented once, meaning the +1/+1 Counters are only placed that one time as the damage isn't prevented, say, three times as in your example.

Say I Pyroclasm with two Vigors in play along with, say, 5 1/1 Elf Tokens. Each creature in play will only get two +1/+1 Counters on them. It doesn't matter which Vigor prevented the damage, but once prevented, the other can't sweep in and prevent it again because there is nothing to prevent any more.

This card, when paired with the likes of any number of Graft creatures from Ravnica Block is absolutely monstrous. Next thing you know, that Cytoplast Root-Kin just became even more deadly than before.

It's hilarious when someone doesn't know what this does.

Me: Ok I attack with all my creatures. Who blocks who?
Opponent: Why does it matter? They all die anyway.
Me: WHO BLOCKS WHO?
Opponent: Ok I'll have this guy kill Llanowar elves...
Me: Ok so my elves get 3 +1/+1 couinters...
Opponent: Wait, what?!?!
Me: Yeah... did I forget to mention...
Opponent: YEAH YOU DID FORGET TO MENTION! (looks at Vigor) ok I don't block anymore.

I'd like to see a Red-Green-White deck with this, Purity and Chandra Nalaar.
Get Chandra to full, make Vigor indestuctible, have Purity out, then Use Chandra's ultimate on yourself. Gain 10 life, and all your creatures get a permanent +10/+10.
And Chandra can be used on yourself. It says "Target Player".

Getting mana of three different colors should be easy with Harrow to get specific lands and things like birds of paradise and Terramorphic Expanse.

★★★★★ (5.0/5.0) (4 votes)
No, the effects do not stack. The effect prevents the damage. You will not get +30/+30 for having 3 of them out.

The way the ability works prevents the damage. So the first one on the stack prevents chandra nalaar's 10 damage. Then the damage will already have been prevented, so the second and third triggered effects will prevent 0 damage giving 0 +1/+1 counters.

Prized Unicorn + this = ..... I'm scared now. And if you added Lace with Moonglove to that....

Of course, considering what he can do, opponents are going to want him gone. Throw Indestructibility and Whispersilk Cloak on him to make him nearly invincible.

With Rise of the Eldrazi, you could also run a G/W deck using tokens and Lightmine Field. Attack with all your tokens, they all get a ton of counters. That deck would also benefit from the fact that W had a lot of cards that could protect Vigor.

@Dingo- well two Vigors will protect each other but with three out each would still get +10, because the counters are put on once, because of the "for each point of damage prevented this way" thing. Right?

Actually keep in mind shuffling into the library isn't always a good thing. Black can Resurrect or return to the hand, green can top-deck it or return it to their hand, white can res it, etc..

So when Darksteel, Progenitus, Vigor or other huge beasties like the legendary eldrazi go back in the library, keep in mind it's not always a bonus; definitely a two-way street.

Spiteful Bully's best friend. 3/3 the turn he comes in play. 6/6 the next.

Another thing. How does this ability work with infect creatures in play?
Fert12334
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
@filmfanaticryan

I believe it would work the same as normal damage, Ryan. A creature with infect deals damage to creatures in the form of -1/-1 counters, and Vigor's ability states "if damage would be dealt to a creature you control other than Vigor, prevent that damage." So the damage is prevented as if it were damage from a normal creature, and the creature would receive no -1/-1 counters.
Hope that helps.

Anyways, about the card - I love it! It's pretty much game over for your opponent unless they can find a way to deal with him. And even if he dies, your other creatures would have probably been beefed up in the process. It's cards like these that make me wish Lorwyn packs weren't so hard to find these days.

i'm going to try and clear up a few questions i've seen

Infect: since vigor prevents any sort of damage, and infect DEALS damage in the form of -1/-1 counters, then infect would be useless, since all damage is prevented.

Blocking attackers who have trample: this works the same as protection from creatures. trample isn't based on damage dealt, it's based on damage ASSIGNED. all they have to do is assign lethal damage, then the rest goes through. when the actual damage would be dealt, you stop that to your creature, but the rest goes through.

hope that helps

@ JaxsonBatemon Very solid point. If two of these hit the board, you're basically screwed if you can't at least get rid of one of them. Target removal is the only thing that allows Wizards to make creatures like this.

As I understand it, no two vigors would not protect each other as you describe. If they were meant to do that, the card text would read "if damage would be dealt to another creature you control ..."

As written, "a creature other than vigor" means any vigor in play.

★★★☆☆ (3.5/5.0) (3 votes)
This seems REALLY unbalanced.

A 6/6 for 6 mana is already par. Adding trample is fair. Adding self-recycling is better. Adding damage eating to all other creatures is WAY TOO GOOD.

Compare it to Phytohydra. Phytohydra doesn't have self-recycling or trample, and it's damage eating only applies to itself. At a cost of 5 it STARTS at 1/1.

Tack onto that that Vigor only needs Green and gets Elemental tribal bonuses, and you have a REALLY overpriced card.

The least they could have done was drop his power/toughness or up his cost.
Zielheim

@Syberduh2

Incorrect, EVERY creature that has an ability basically reads 'this creature'. Otherwise, permanents that have abilities of other permanents without being copies of them wouldn't work. For example, if you had a Prodigal Pyromancer in your grave (and none on the field) and a Necrotic Ooze on the field, then going by your line of thinking, whenever the ooze activates it's ability, nothing would happen because there isn't a Pyromancer on the field. Likewise, if you had multiple Pyromancers out and activated it's ability, then all of the Pyromancers should be dealing damage because the ability states that "Prodgial Pyromancer deals 1 damage".

Effectively, every ability that ever specifies that creature (like Vigor or the Pyromancer), just read it as 'this creature' instead of '(insert creature's name)'.

How can you rate tihs card less than 5?

- It's a 6/6 trampler for six mana.
- It's mana intensive for flavor reasons, because vigor is GREEN.
- It's a bison with Juzám Djinn-like horns and a turtle shell!
- It has a wading bird on its head.
- It makes Phyrexian Negator far more better than Phyrexian Obliterator!

Is all this not enough? And I haven't mentioned the most powerful ability yet...

@corranhorn84: Correct on the second count but not the first. When the text says Vigor it actually means "this Vigor." If it meant any Vigor, it would actually say "a creature you control not named Vigor" (see Detention Sphere).

You're correct about multiple Vigors not being cumulative - since the damange is prevented by one effect, the other effect does nothing.

Sakashima the Impostor allows you to prevent damage to Vigor. I wonder how this would work with Swans of Bryn Argoll, however? Do you prevent the damage, then add +1/+1 counters to the Swans or draw cards? Does the controller of them choose?

Just wanted to point out one key reason this card is not entirely broken, Lure + Death touch = Dead Vigor. Now, open season on the rest of them. Or, if you're playing legacy, Gorilla Berserkers + Nemesis Mask + Gorgon Flail + Fireshrieker = Vigor dead + major hurt to the player themself. AND thanks to all the equips, next turn you can just build a new Gorilla Berserkers if you want two. AND it's only 1 +1/+1 counter on each creature.

Besides, Contagion Engine + Prototype Portal => Everything's dead without ever being damaged.

This gets full marks due to the bizarre and excellent art. I don't think green needed this, to tell the truth. Most green beasties already have a fair bit of staying power, and making them all invincible, nay, better than invincible to damage is perhaps a bit much, particularly at 6 cmc with a 6/6 trample body. It may have been an effort to balance the scales, since green often gets the shaft. I had a casual game where an indestructible Kulrath Knight held off an entire Timmy army because my opponent had a Vigor. Quite amusing. 5/5 for style.
