Let's face it, Dredge was incredibly abusable, and the Grave-Troll was one of the best at abusing it. When it dredges, it feeds itself!

I might also be the only person who actually likes the art. It looks like it's backlit by sunset, which makes it look more peaceful and relaxing before it tears your arms off.

Trygon, you are NOT the only one. Though I was hoping for new art, I DEFINITELY want this guy to stay PINK forever! :D I was hoping maybe he'd look like Ivan Ooze if he was the Face Mythic of the Golgari Box :3

I'm gonna pretend the art for Loleth Troll is the new art for this. Its not bad, its just kinda underwhelming compared to the card itself

This card just won't die. As long as you have mana open to regenerate him, he can "die" four or five times over AT LEAST before he actually goes to the 'yard. And then he comes back next turn so he can take five or six more killing blows. An absolute champion.

Ruling: "If an effect puts Golgari Grave-Troll onto the battlefield from your graveyard, Golgari Grave-Troll counts itself as one of the cards in your graveyard and gets a counter accordingly."

"Why are you so big? Don't you feed off the dead?"
"Yup."
"But nothing is dead."
"There's one thing."
"No, the graveyard is empty."
"I'm dead."
"No you're not."
"Yes I am."
"You're talking to me."
"I WAS dead."
"But now you're not."
"Nope."
"So why are you so big?"
"I ate myself."
"You ate yourself?"
"Uh-huh."
"That's impossible."
"No it isn't."
"It would make you smaller."
"I got bigger."
"How does that work?"
"Magic."

The coolest thing about this print? The updated Golgari Signet.

Seriously. Practically makes it a collectible just on that factor.

That, and the card is bonkers when you play him. And stupid when you play him right.

Yay Golgari reprints!

In my country, a novice like me simply does not troll a troll without pay a troll trolo toll. This you can understand? Not a fun guy because he does not die to the removal spell from Mono-Black controlo deck!

The really funny thing is, when they first printed this, they probably thought that a higher number on the Dredge made it worse.

i'm thinking banning cards in modern just ended up being an interesting game of darts

I got 3 of these in my B/G/U self-mill deck, and I discovered an awesome combo:
Get this guy into your graveyard (somehow), and have at least one creature that has "T: Draw a card, discard a card", like merfolk looter or thought courier. Activate their ability, and return Golgari Grave-Troll to your hand instead of drawing a card. Then mill 6 cards, and discard Golgari Grave-Troll.
This basically changes the afore-mentioned card texts to "T: Mill 6 cards"... Which can be EXTREMELY effective!
5/5!

The flavor here is that he's a skeleton made out of the bones/bits of your other creatures; the regenerate is you blowing chunks off of him.

I think.

I used to think this was a mediocre card, but just because I had recently taken several losses at a magic tournament from mill decks and was struggling with an irrational fear of a large graveyard, and thus of dredge. THEN I saw how Dredge could interact with his other abilities.
I no longer have a fear of being milled out when I have this card.

Can become a big scary creature in no time. If he had trample he would be insane.

That's why Brawn is in my dredge deck

This guy isn't good because of the two paragraphs up top, the real way this card is bonkers is Dredge 6.

It really is a beast. The only way I was ever able to get away from it in casual dredge decks is flashing Kulrath Knight just so it couldn't attack or block...but Kulrath is 5 cmc. If they are playing a true dredge deck, turn 1 or 2 is the only banking turn you have to run from. Good luck. HAHA
